422: The Verb "Pelah" Does Not Prove that Jesus is God

This episode discusses how the Son of Man receives worship/service ("pelah"), yet dismantles the assumption that this Aramaic verb applies only to God. We demonstrate that the verb "pelah" is flexible, accommodating objects of worship that include the Most High God as well as worthy human beings. We survey the use of this verb in Daniel, in the Dead Sea Scrolls, and in Targum Onkelos.  To view the video version of this episode, go here: https://youtu.be/qHHBhaVwChk             Visit Amazon to buy your copy of A Systematic Theology of the Early Church: https://amzn.to/47jldOc    Visit Amazon to buy your copy of Wisdom Christology in the Gospel of John: https://amzn.to/3JBflHb     Visit Amazon to buy your copy of The Son of God: Three Views of the Identity of Jesus: https://amzn.to/43DPYey    To support this podcast, donate here: https://www.paypal.me/10mintruthtalks    Episode notes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UVjP1tpiUs0eAFVfQF9zW3B7ziY98JdanT_S9LposPY/edit?usp=sharing    Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@BiblicalUnitarianPodcast        Follow on Instagram: https://Instagram.com/biblicalunitarianpodcast  Follow on X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/OneGodPodcast

This episode is part 1 of 2 addressing a video from Dan McClellan called "Was 1 Enoch considered inspired scripture?"Dan McClellan claims to be a Latter-day Saint, although his views don't reflect those of typical Mormons. He has impressive credentials and he uses them to make Tiktok and YouTube videos that promote a deconstructionist view of Scripture under the guise of "Data > dogma." He also promotes leftist political ideas that are uniformly Marxist and identity politics. This episode looks at McClellan's argument that the canon was not certain in the first century A.D. and that Josephus didn't clarify which books were in the 22 books he regarded as Scripture. He argues that 1 Enoch may have been considered Scripture during this time before that idea faded out later because of how many copies of it were found in the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. We see what the Essenes believed in the Qumran community and why they may have liked 1 Enoch. We also test Josephus' threefold division of the Tanakh to see if 1 Enoch could fit.Sources Cited:Dan McClellan, "Was 1 Enoch considered inspired scripture?"Dan McClellan, YHWH's Divine Images: A Cognitive Approach, (SBL Press, Atlanta, 2022).Ether's Elephant, "Dan McClellan being Woke for 8 Minutes"Dan McClellan, "Does the Social Justice of the Bible Differ from the Social Justice of Today?"Eva Mroczek, "How Many Books are in the Bible? This episode was inspired by an interview with Dr. Margaret Barker on the History Valley Podcast discussing her 2023 book The Great Lady. We begin with Opinion Scholarship on the very earliest known religious images from the Stone Age, which depict a Great Goddess figure and walk through how that image was preserved in later mythology. We then bring Dr. Barker's work to bear on the Biblical figure of Ashera, how her memory was obscured over the development of Judaic monotheism and how the truth of her origin was finally revealed in the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Enjoy ;)

In this episode of Busy, Gritty, Inked & Witchy, Morgan dives into the history, mythology, and modern magick of Lilith, the dark divine feminine goddess of sexuality, sovereignty, and unapologetic power. Lilith has long been misunderstood, demonized, and distorted through religious and patriarchal narratives. From her earliest mentions in the Dead Sea Scrolls to her role as Adam's first wife in Jewish folklore, her story has evolved dramatically over time. But who is Lilith beyond the fear-based mythology? Morgan breaks down: Lilith's origins in ancient texts and Jewish folklore The story of Lilith and Adam in the Garden of Eden How and why she was demonized Lilith as a modern symbol of feminine autonomy and rebellion Ways to work with Lilith in witchcraft and spiritual practice Her correspondences, symbols, herbs, gemstones, and offerings What to expect when you invite Lilith into your life Lilith is not a love-and-light goddess. What if the most important thing about Jesus isn't where he walked, but what he awakened? We sit down with author and pastor Robert Ochs to follow a forty-year trail from carpentry and sea training to ancient libraries and pulpits, tracing how a life of work, service, and study led him to reexamine the nature of Christ. Along the way, Robert reveals the moments that cracked open his curiosity—a gifted copy of The Mystical Life of Jesus from an agnostic friend, long stretches of quiet on the water, and an assignment in Athens that put him close to artifacts and the discipline of manuscript research.Robert's perspective is both reverent and adventurous. He explores the potential influence of the Essenes, suggests how prophetic schools could have shaped Jesus' early formation, and draws from texts like the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi Library to illuminate a message centered on inner transformation. Instead of a distant heaven, he points to the kingdom within; instead of fear-driven devotion, he argues for a spirituality measured by love, stillness, and conscious practice. His engineering background surfaces as he connects spiritual growth to ideas of energy, frequency, and vibration, while his pastoral heart keeps the conversation grounded in compassion and everyday choices. We also talk about the realities of authorship—why purpose outlasts profit, how disenfranchised Christians are finding fresh hope in his work, and what his next book will tackle as it brings “secret teachings” into dialogue with modern issues. If you've ever felt loyal to a denomination but hungry for a deeper inner life, this candid, research-rich conversation offers a map: meditate, question, study, and let love recalibrate your way of being. In this episode, we will discuss the meaning, history, and controversy surrounding the use of Hebrew names for the Father and Son, including the heart behind why I choose to use the names “Yahuah” for the Father and “Yahusha” for the Son. We will explore how ancient Hebrew was written without vowels, how historical events like the Babylonian exile and later scribal traditions influenced pronunciation and translation, and how titles like “Lord” and “God” came to replace the personal Name in many Bible translations, which has deeply influenced our understanding today. We will also examine historical evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls and early Greek manuscript fragments, which show that the Father's Name was preserved long after the biblical period. We will discuss the difference between misusing the Name versus using it, the cultural and prophetic significance of names in Hebrew thought, and why heart posture matters more than perfect pronunciation.Lastly, we will address the common “cult” accusations associated with using Hebrew names, clarifying what actually defines a cult and encouraging listeners to approach the topic with humility and love. The episode truly emphasizes the “weightier matter”: honoring the Father not just with our words, but how we live. Resources:What is God's Name? The Letter of Jude E3 — After the letter's opening appeal, Jude (or Judah) begins warning corrupt members of a Jewish messianic church community who cast off restraint and live openly immoral lives. He does so with an ancient rhetorical technique found in both the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Jude shares three stories of rebellion in the Hebrew Bible: the spies fearful of the promised land in Numbers 13-14, the “sons of God” in Genesis 6, and the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19. Then he draws comparisons to the corrupt church members, promising they'll receive the same judgment. Why does Jude write this way about the moral crisis in a church? Jim Barfield is best known for his groundbreaking research into the mysterious Copper Scroll, one of the Dead Sea Scrolls that uniquely lists hidden caches of gold, silver, and sacred artifacts. Through The Copper Scroll Project, Barfield investigates whether this ancient document is a literal treasure map tied to the Temple of Jerusalem, rather than a symbolic or purely religious text. Combining biblical scholarship, archaeology, historical geography, and on-the-ground field research, Barfield presents compelling evidence that the treasures described may have been deliberately hidden before the Roman destruction of Jerusalem. His work challenges long-held academic assumptions and invites a reassessment of one of the most enigmatic discoveries of the ancient world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. They discuss the significance of the 'sons of God' in biblical texts, the impact of second-century rabbinical changes, and the role of scribes in preserving the integrity of the Bible. The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding these elements to grasp the full majesty of Jesus and the richness of the gospel.Doug dives into the significance of the Nephilim and their origins in relation to Genesis 6 and why it matters.  HIs insights bring clarity to often misunderstood passages, making this a must-listen for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Bible.  This conversation is not just for theologians, but for anyone interested in understanding the nuances of scripture and its historical interpretations.   Doug Van Dorn opens the conversation by addressing a common concern among Christians: "How can I trust my Bible if what you're saying is true?" He reassures listeners that while there are textual differences across translations, the Bible remains trustworthy. He cites the book of Isaiah and the Dead Sea Scrolls as examples, noting that the discrepancies are minimal, emphasizing that the Bible's transmission is superior to any other ancient texts.  Become Part of Our Mission! He fought an extremely rare form of cancer bravely, but in the end, his heart couldn't keep up the fight anymore. He went fast with no prolonged suffering. We want to thank all of you who have kept him in prayer. Please know that those prayers were not in vain. Our son lives with Jesus now. We are now updating this campaign to reflect our financial need for his remaining hospital bills, funeral expenses, and housing for our family. As most men, I do not enjoy asking for help. However, as most fathers and husbands can relate to, there isn't anything I won't do for my family. In light of that, I wanted to first ask all of you to pray for us. Not as a matter of faith, but as a question of evidence. This episode of Strange Planet takes listeners into a courtroom-style investigation of Christianity's most consequential claim—the birth of Christ. Trial attorney Daniel P. Buttafuoco examines the Bible not as devotional literature, but as documentary evidence, weighing eyewitness testimony, manuscript reliability, and forensic archaeology. From the Dead Sea Scrolls to Messianic prophecy written centuries before Bethlehem, this is a Christmas episode without sentimentality—rooted in ancient texts, hard proof, and a single, unsettling question: if this were any other case, would the evidence really be dismissed? GUEST: Daniel P. Buttafuoco is a veteran trial attorney who brings the discipline of the courtroom to the biggest questions of faith. Known for his rigorous, evidence-based approach, he treats Christianity as a legal case—argued with rules of evidence, standards of proof, and historical documentation. In his book Unapologetic: Clear Answers to Tough Bible Questions, Buttafuoco examines Scripture as an ancient legal record, drawing on eyewitness testimony, textual consistency, and forensic discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls. He doesn't ask audiences to believe—he asks them to examine the evidence and reach a verdict. On this special Christmas Eve episode of Shoulder to Shoulder, Pastor Doug Reed flies solo while Rabbi Pesach is on his way back from Amfest and the Hanukkah celebration at the White House. Doug welcomes Pastor Nate Brown, cohost of the Under God podcast and pastor of Vintage Church in Liberty Hill, Texas, for a deep dive into what Christmas actually means – not just culturally, but theologically.  Speaking to an audience of both Christians and Jews, Doug and Nate unpack the story of the incarnation – God entering history in the person of Jesus – its roots in Jewish prophecy like Isaiah 9, and why that claim has shaped the world for two thousand years. They tackle the tension between "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays," the consumerism that threatens to hollow out the holiday, and the popular claim that December 25th is just a Christianized pagan festival – walking through early Christian sources that tell a very different story.  They also explore how Christmas connects to Israel, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the continuity between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, why Christmas and Easter can't really be separated, and what it means in 2026 to live as if "God with us" is true: engaging culture instead of retreating from it, and standing publicly with the Jewish people in the face of rising antisemitism and attacks like Bondi Beach. Whether you are a Christian wanting to recover the depth of Christmas, or a Jew curious about what your Christian neighbors are really celebrating, this conversation is for you.

Ancient bound books hidden in Jordan's caves for 2,000 years — The Lead Codices. David Elkington returns LIVE to share exclusive news on this discovery that could rewrite early Christianity. This Sunday we welcome back David Elkington, author of The Ancient Language of Sacred Sound and returning guest from Episode 280. David joins us with exclusive news about his latest project: The Lead Codices — a cache of ancient bound books discovered in caves in northern Jordan. Made of lead sheets bound with rings and stored in lead “arks,” these codices may be the earliest bound books ever found, dating back nearly 2,000 years. Inscribed in Paleo-Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, the texts are linked to the earliest followers of Jesus who fled Jerusalem during the Judeo-Roman war. Scientific analysis confirms their antiquity, with corrosion profiles consistent with artifacts from the first century. Could these mysterious codices rewrite our understanding of early Christianity? Join us LIVE as David reveals the story behind their discovery, the ongoing research, and why they matter today.

Is the Bible we read today the same one the prophets, apostles, and early church had? In this episode, we put the Scriptures under the microscope—textual criticism, the Dead Sea Scrolls, manuscript counts, famous variants (like John 7:53–8:11 and Mark 16:9–20), and the claim of “400,000 errors.” We'll show why the integrity of the Bible matters for the Gospel, for trusting Jesus (John 10:35), and for your everyday evangelism. What you'll learn:Why this question isn't a side issue—it's about the trustworthiness of the Gospel and of Christ Himself.OT reliability: Masoretic Text vs. Dead Sea Scrolls—how close are we to the originals?NT reliability: the bibliographical test, thousands of manuscripts, and how variants are weighed. The “400,000 variants” claim—what counts as a variant, and why the vast majority don't change meaning.Big textual questions (e.g., Longer Ending of Mark, Woman Caught in Adultery, Johannine Comma) and why identifying them strengthens confidence. Why alternative “final authorities” never face the same scrutiny—and why Scripture stands.===============================Resources mentioned: Ketef Hinnom Scrolls: https://ketefhinnomsilverscrolls.github.io/about.htmlIntroduction to Textual Criticism pt. 1: https://www.aomin.org/aoblog/textual-issues/an-introduction-to-textual-criticism-part-3-textual-errors/Introduction to Textual Criticism pt. 3: https://www.aomin.org/aoblog/textual-issues/an-introduction-to-textual-criticism-part-3-textual-errors/Ed Gravely - Aren't There 400,000 Variants in the NT? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gieq2fYH9gs https://www.aomin.org/aoblog/textual-issues/an-introduction-to-textual-criticism-part-1-introduction/=================================If this helped you:

We'll also hear an incredible true story from 1947—when a young shepherd boy discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls, some of the oldest copies of the Bible ever found. Among them was the Book of Isaiah, matching what we read today almost word for word. This amazing discovery reminds us that God's Word has been faithfully preserved for thousands of years and that we can trust His promises. John's lessons can be found on his website   theologyinfive.com.   Today's lesson is titled Pentecost and the Reversal of Babel: Reclaiming the Nations for Yahweh   The biblical narrative does not unfold randomly—it is a carefully structured drama of rebellion, judgment, and redemption. One of the clearest examples of this pattern occurs between two seemingly distant events: the judgment at the Tower of Babel in Genesis Eleven and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in Acts two. While Babel marked the disinheritance and scattering of the nations due to collective rebellion, Pentecost served as a supernatural reversal of that judgment and the formal beginning of Yahweh's mission to reclaim the nations under the rule of His Son, Jesus the Messiah. This first segment is: Babel: Humanity's United Rebellion and Yahweh's Judgment. In Genesis Eleven, mankind, still united by one language and culture, gathered in defiance of God's command to spread out and fill the earth (Genesis Nine verse 1).   Instead, they sought to build a tower—a ziggurat—that would “reach to the heavens” and make a name for themselves. This act was more than urban planning or architectural ambition; it was a spiritual rebellion. In the Ancient Near East, ziggurats symbolized sacred space, portals between heaven and earth, where humans could manipulate the gods. The Tower of Babel, therefore, represented a counterfeit mountain of assembly—an attempt to storm heaven and force divine presence on human terms. God responded not by destroying them physically but by confusing their language. This act severed their ability to conspire as one. More significantly, according to Deuteronomy thirty-two verses eight and nine (Dead Sea Scrolls versions), God responded by disinheriting the nations: When the Most High assigned lands to the nations, when he divided up the human race, he established the boundaries of the peoples according to the number in his heavenly court. “For the people of Israel belong to the Lord; Jacob is his special possession. This passage reveals a profound truth: Yahweh handed over the rebellious nations to lesser divine beings—members of the heavenly host often referred to as the bene elohim. These beings were expected to rule justly, but Psalm 82 shows that they instead oppressed and corrupted the nations under their charge, leading Yahweh to declare their doom. From Babel onward, Yahweh would focus on a single nation—Israel—through whom He would eventually bless all the nations (Genesis twelve verse three). The second segment is: Pentecost: The Gathering Begins. Fast forward to Acts two. The Jewish feast of Shavuot (Pentecost) had brought devout Jews and proselytes from across the known world to Jerusalem. This was the perfect...

The Bible did not appear by chance but was divinely orchestrated by God, whose wisdom ensured that His Word would stand as an indisputable authority through the ages. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar discuss how Scripture was formed, explaining that man did not grant the Bible's authority. Many believe the Bible was compiled centuries later by human decision, but in reality, its authority was immediate, and its recognition only confirmed what was already divine. Recognizing the Bible's authority is crucial because it affirms that it is free from error or contradiction, providing everything believers need for their walk with Christ. Unlike the constantly changing nature of science, the message of the Bible stays the same, bringing order where the world brings chaos. The Old Testament was confirmed with its three main divisions—the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings—by 132 BC. Josephus referenced twenty-two sacred books, and by 430 BC, around the time of Malachi, the Old Testament was considered complete. The Apocrypha was later added by the Catholic Church, but not as part of the confirmed canon. Although the original manuscripts no longer exist, Mark emphasizes how scribes took meticulous care in copying the texts, ensuring accuracy through precise measures. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls further demonstrated the reliability of Scripture, showing only minor differences that never changed the meaning.Jesus Himself affirmed the Old Testament, and the apostles understood that their own writings carried divine authority. Just as God made covenants in the Old Testament, Jesus established a new covenant, which required new writings. The apostles, guided by the Holy Spirit, recorded teachings that matched Christ's promise to bring His words to mind. The detailed genealogies and honest portrayals of flawed heroes throughout scripture attest to the truthfulness of the writers' accounts. God's Word does not hide human failure but shows how He fulfills His perfect plan through imperfect people. The early church used clear and consistent standards to identify which writings belonged in Scripture. As authentic writings circulated among believers, false ones were naturally rejected. Scripture is described as God-breathed, meaning it comes from Him and has His authority. It is useful for teaching, correction, and training in righteousness, providing everything necessary for faith and life. The Bible remains a trustworthy revelation from the living God, divinely inspired and unchanging, guiding believers to the truth and grounding them in the gospel.Send us a textThanks for listening!
