Disclaimer: *Please listen to the introduction of the episode, if you have any kind of qualm or hesitation before listening. The goal of this conversation is to engage critically, and to express differing thoughts. If you do not care to listen to opinions and arguments you disagree with, this podcast episode is probably not for you. As much as I’d hope to cultivate a space of compassion and graciousness, it isn't entirely up to me. For this week's episode, I am joined by Coleman Hughes, national commentator, columnist at Quillette. Coleman has spoken before Congress, and has written for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the National Review. Coleman has been interviewed by Dave Rubin for the Rubin Report, and by Sam Harris for the Making Sense Podcast. We discuss political correctness, identity politics, cancel culture, and polarization on college campuses like ours, Columbia University. Connect with me! Welcome to Season 3 of “What Does She Know?” We’re starting off this season and semester discussing intention, and people getting in the way of living your best life!!! And being your best self can be hard! This episode is dedicated to refreshing and setting new intentions for the semester. Special thanks to Bradley (B. Something about turning twenty radically changes your role in the world––often times, there is an added sense of autonomy in making sh*t happen, an added sense of agency in relationships with family, and an entirely new relationship with the rest of the world. Lately, I've felt like entering my twenties has required me to step into bigger roles in almost all of the relationships around me. On this episode, I talk about stepping into the vulnerability of engaging with my estranged family, and attempting to conduct research on our genealogy for the scholars program at Columbia. I talk about yet another restless summer, and the feelings of regression that often come from summers at home. I also mention the progress on the fundraiser I created for Melaleuca Elementary School and the ins and outs of that process. I hope you enjoy this episode! Connect with me! CW: suicide After a brief hiatus, I’m back with some meditations on the current solemn environment on campus. Joining me on this episode is my boyfriend, Myles, and his closest friends on Columbia University's football team, Marquavious, Cameron, Broderick, and Jalen. We discuss men being trash, and the wave of Twitter feminism that blurs the lines between radical self-love and impossible asks of any and all partners, regardless of their gender identity. Disclaimer: my goal in this isn't to play the "I'm not a feminist, I believe in equality" bullshit. IF IT ISN'T OBVIOUS, I AM A FEMINIST! There is no denying toxic masculinity, and the perpetuation of positions of caretaker and emotional laborer onto onto womxn. My reasoning for stepping onto the mic today is to share my experience and opinions, and share that I've never been more challenged to love myself as much as I have now in a serious relationship. In my experience, it's very easy to be confident and think you love yourself when you build your walls high and never let anyone see your rough edges. Finding love in yourself once someone has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life. And I am weary of the nuanced conversations around cold-heartedness as a means for reparations. Yes, it isn't our job as womxn to undo the systemic problems of pride and machismo. But, we too deserve love, and it doesn't come easy. *I'm also aware that I'm limited to my experience as a ciswoman in a cishetero relationship. Connect with me!
