She has collaborated with Ed Sheeran, Le Ann Womack, and Sara Bareilles, among many others. She has toured all over the world, and continues to have a thriving solo career. She has sung with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw, Laurie Anderson, Bela Fleck, and The Orlando Philharmonic.  She's a featured soloist in the films Chappaquiddick and Free State of Jones, and writes music for This American Life. #429 In this podcast episode, Guy talked with Viola Rose about the collective sense of change happening in the world and why she believed people were being called to live more from the heart. Viola explained how the mind often created reality through duality, while the heart offered a path toward unity, love, and deeper inner peace. GRAMMY® Balloted Club Nouveau, Timex Social ClubGrammy Award Balloted singer and music label executive, Jay King, was elected CEO/President of the California Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) in June of 2019.GRAMMY® Award Balloted Jay King/Club Nouveau's music & samples have been featured in many TV & Film Soundtracks including the #1 Hit Movie "US" by Director Jordan Peele! "Jealousy" also made an appearance on the soundtrack for the film Modern Girls. "Why You Treat Me So Bad" was interpolated by the hip-hop duo Luniz, on its hit single "I Got 5 on It", and subsequently by rapper/record producer Puff Daddy on his #1 R&B single "Satisfy You".This week, I look at how a brand can stay relevant decade after decade.As a veteran mogul Jay King brings as much humility to the field as he does what has been called his genius. With three decades of continuous achievements in music, management, film/TV/radio, consulting and publishing; King has made an indelible impression. He claims Northern California in general as his hometown due to a nomadic youth spent between many of the Bay Area's cities; as well as Alaska for birthing his career. There was a deep musical undercurrent added to his early years by a clan which boasted a number of ministers, extending from his great-grandfather through a number of cousins, who all played instruments as well. His great uncle, Saunders King, a respected jazz/blues guitarist, offered the West Coast the first family hit in the 1940's—‘The S.K. Blues'—adding to the musical backdrop of King's childhood. In 1986, King starting the independent record label JAY Records to release the Timex Social Club hit ‘Rumors' and ushered in the biggest selling single of 1986 (3.5 million copies) and becoming the #1 R&B single on the Billboard Charts. With a Top 10 single on the Billboard Pop charts for over 56 weeks, King watched his life change as his music became an unprecedented hit. What he'd produced was history-making, as nobody had before taken an R&B song from an indie label to such heights. Although having independently produced, pressed and marketed his own music King was without the money to compete at radio plays and had to be creative with promoting. “There were challenges. You couldn't reach out to stores, and social media didn't exist then so you couldn't let people know with a click of a button that you had something out. You had to get out and hustle.  Shell Oil, Miss America PageantLencola Sullivan Verseveldt is a American news anchor, singer and former beauty queen who has competed in the Miss America pageant & the 1st Black Runner-Up ever in that Pageant. She was the first African-American to be crowned Miss Arkansas.The oldest of five children born to Richard and Macie Sullivan. She attended the University of Central Arkansas where she received a degree in broadcasting.Sullivan won the Miss Arkansas title in July 1980 and represented Arkansas in the Miss America 1981 pageant held later that year in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Sullivan and Doris Hayes (Washington) became the first African-American women to win preliminary talent awards in the pageant. She was also the first to place among the top five, where she was fourth runner-up.Lencola became a news reporter on KARK-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas, and later moved to New York City. She has also worked for KTTV-TV in Austin, Texas, and sang with renown music artists Stevie Wonder, Kool & the Gang (for example on the album Unite) and Jazz Legend Lionel Hampton & his Orchestra, among many other things.She married Roel P. In 1997, during Styx's tour, Lawrence Gowan's band performed as a supporting act for Styx at Montreal's Molson Center and Quebec City's Colisee. Tommty Shaw admired his talent and vibrant stage charisma and called him in May 1999 asking him to tour with them for 53 dates, temporarily replacing their lead singer, Dennis DeYoung who had fallen ill. Lawrence permaentaly replaced the lead singer after the tour.  Styx had long been plagued by differences in artistic inclination. DeYoung's absence created an opportunity for a more premanent restructuring of Styx. Lawrence subsequently became the band's permanent vocalist. A proud Navy veteran, Jared Shoemaker channels the same focus he had in service into his work as a country-rock musician. The 32-year-old began his musical journey playing snare drum in an Irish bagpipe band as a kid, but it was during his military service aboard the USS George H.W. Bush that Jared discovered his voice. After leaving the Navy, Jared worked dismantling chemical weapons before realizing his true calling was music. He picked up the guitar again, formed his band, Marshull, during the pandemic, and has been performing across the Southeast ever since, opening for artists such as Diamond Rio and Colt Ford. The Portland-based band The Builders and The Butchers released their seventh album, “No Tomorrow,” this month. The band started in 2005 busking and playing house shows and are now known for playing raucous, audience-involved stage shows. A proud Navy veteran, Jared Shoemaker channels the same focus he had in service into his work as a country-rock musician. The 32-year-old began his musical journey playing snare drum in an Irish bagpipe band as a kid, but it was during his military service aboard the USS George H.W. Bush that Jared discovered his voice. After leaving the Navy, Jared worked dismantling chemical weapons before realizing his true calling was music. He picked up the guitar again, formed his band, Marshull, during the pandemic, and has been performing across the Southeast ever since, opening for artists such as Diamond Rio and Colt Ford. Kate Kortum is a terrific 24-year-old jazz vocalist from Houston, Texas. She blends together bebop, blues, the Great American Songbook, and musical theatre. She's got a fresh, contemporary take on jazz vocals. She's performed at major venues including the Newport Jazz Festival, Birdland, the Blue Note, Dizzy's, SXSW, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. She haș toured internationally and collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. She's also a member of The Sunhouse Singers, a New York-based vocal trio. They've been featured in projects by Charlie Rosen, Christian Wiggs, and Benny Benack III, each of whom has been a guest on this podcast.  My featured song is “Mi Cachimber All Stars”, my recent single.
