The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Song 18 — Claire from Ann ArborHey, it's jD. And welcome to the wide open middle of the countdown — that beautiful, feral terrain where deep cuts go to become legends and personal faves start to collide with consensus picks. This week on The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown, I'm joined by one of our most thoughtful and eloquent membersHIPers: Claire from Ann Arbor. We talk about discovering The Hip as a millennial from the U.S., falling hard thanks to Hockey Night in Canada, and how a steady diet of CBC and her dad's hockey tapes led her straight to 50 Mission Cap. (That's right — before she even knew the song, she knew the legend of Bill Barilko. That's parenting done right.)But what really makes this one hit different? Claire's lived experience as a disabled fan navigating concerts, fandom, and feeling safe in the crowd. Her reflections on inclusivity, identity, and finding community through The Hip are honest, funny, moving, and — in true TTHTop40 fashion — a little nerdy in the best possible way. We're not just counting down songs here. We're collecting stories. Claire's is one you'll be glad you heard.

If there’s one thing you learn about hit songs while doing this podcast it’s to ‘never underestimate the power of a good hook - at any cost’ From songs in our archive like LEN’s Steal My Sunshine, to Avril Lavigne’s Girlfriend, and even songs we’ve covered this season like Backstreet Boys’ I want it That Way or Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit; It’s proven time and time again that intelligible lyrics are quite simply not one of the key components of a good pop song - as long as some combination of words sound good on a beat - who cares what they are!? Reminder - Howie D LITERALLY told our host Ruby Carr to her face that Backstreet Boys purposely kept lyrics in I Want It That Way that didn’t make any sense. Why? For the vibes, duh. And it’s certainly not just lucidity of thought that can be sacrificed at the altar of catchy hooks and anthemic refrains - and warning - I’m about to sound like a total grandma right now - But Have You Heard Some of Those Lyrics? Yes, I know I’m not really telling you anything you don’t already know, but it’s actually kind of perversely funny to think about so much of the subject matter across all genres of music that we will happily sing or hum along and vibe to, thanks to the power of the killer hook. One such example is of course the topic of today’s episode - Snoop Dogg and Pharrell’s 2004 Hit ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ - A Number 1 hit on the hot 100 pop songs for three of its outstanding 30 weeks - with lyrical content so questionable - it has not one but TWO radio edits - a normal one which cuts out swears - and an Extra Clean version for everything else… but we’ll get into that. This is the story of Snoop Dogg and Pharrell's Drop it Like It's Hot! Written by Clayton Taylor for iHeartRadio Canada

This episode takes you on a journey through music history and personal stories that will have you nodding along and laughing out loud.We kick things off with a nostalgic dive into our first concert experiences – Jay's being Journey with Billy Squire opening (complete with the unexpected secondhand marijuana experience at Boston Garden), while Tiffany attended a Michael W. Smith show before graduating to Aerosmith. Our listeners chimed in with everything from Backstreet Boys to Ozzy Osbourne, sparking conversations about how these formative shows shaped our musical tastes. The musical birthday calendar for June reveals fascinating stories about country and rock stars celebrating this month. Did you know Lee Bryce was a songwriter for Garth Brooks before launching his solo career? Or that two members of Korn share June birthdays just days apart? We unpack these fun facts while discussing Ronnie Dunn, Blake Shelton, Gretchen Wilson, Joey Kramer of Aerosmith, and many more June-born musicians. Our music news segment covers Billy Joel's heartbreaking tour cancellation due to his brain disorder diagnosis, the alleged discovery of Freddie Mercury's secret daughter, and Miranda Lambert's refreshingly humble take on her Country Music Hall of Fame prospects. We also spotlight two incredible song recommendations – the genre-bending "Six Feet Deep" by Royale Lynn that perfectly blends country lyrics with metal edge, and the hauntingly beautiful "Ghost of Us" by indie artist Jolie from St. Augustine. The episode wraps with Tiffany's hilarious and anxiety-filled account of experiencing a sensory deprivation float tank for the first time – a rollercoaster of emotions packed into a foot of salt water that perfectly captures the authentic, unfiltered conversation style we're known for.Ready to join our crew? Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2025 50:43

"I think the context was kind of like, how do you go about trying to maybe introduce or convince your organization on some of the more contemporary ideas, when your organization is deeply rooted in zero harm and... Well, I think that's mostly it. Or something like that."  It's our first *official* episode dedicated to a listener question, and Dave totally nailed the summary with the leadoff quote. So what happens when people in authority are focused on zero? Well, for one, you name the episode after the band Authority Zero. It's not super constructive to come out and say that zero harm is stupid. Feel free to give it a go, but the boys wrestled with where it's okay to agree on the big ideas - like don't kill people at work - and have an adult conversation about differences in how we get there. To our listener's question, though, the boys had a pretty solid discussion on introducing some punk rock in a Backstreet Boy safety world. Making the cost of trying something new low is important. We don't need to burn all the boss's shitty records just to have them listen to something new.Focusing on deep discussions of principles is pretty lazy stuff, and then you get folks worried that we're saying harm is okay. It isn't, but maybe we should be focusing on asking leaders how, if it's zero harm or it's not zero harm, what does that mean for what's actually going to change in my organization? Are there unintended consequences of having aspirations of zero? And if there are (and there are), then what should we do differently to sort that out?  Getting to a discussion that's somewhere between shifting an entire worldview and being too far down in the weeds is a tricky balance, but we're trying to get to a middle ground. At least a little bit.The consensus seems to revolve around the idea that we don't have to lure leaders into the van with candy. It might just be that they haven't heard different ideas, and building from what they know to what they need is probably just fine. Maybe it isn't very punk rock, but not thrashing into a leader's office like we're in the mosh pit of contemporary safety is a better move. DISCLAIMER: You probably shouldn't take anything in this podcast too seriously. Punk Rock Safety is for entertainment only. It's definitely not a replacement for professional or legal advice, and the fair amount of piss-taking, shithousery, and general ridiculousness ought to clue you into the fact that no one - and no organization - is endorsing (or un-endorsing, if that's a thing) any products, ideas, or other things. Except NOFX. We definitely endorse them.Oh, and give your money to Punk Rock Saves Lives. They're a rad organization that works in mental health, addiction, and human rights. The episode touches on everything from 90s boy bands (with some nostalgic NSYNC vs Backstreet Boys debate) to the importance of taking criticism gracefully when doing social justice work. They also dive into Kid Rock's recent inflammatory comments about declining birth rates in the US, where he blamed "ugly" and "deranged" liberal women before unpacking the deeper issues behind such statements, exploring how they reflect broader problems with toxic masculinity, emotional regulation, and the refusal to examine systemic causes for societal changes. The Secret Teachings
BEST OF TST (9/17/25) Music Magic Muses: Sirens Glycon Mamushi

The Secret Teachings

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2025 120:01

BEST OF: The 2024 MTV VMA was another example of a powerful religious-cult operating through entertainment to influence society. Taylor Swift was awarded Video of the Year, Sabrina Carpenter won Song of the Year, Katy Perry won the Vanguard Award and performed a gravity defying song, and Megan Thee Stallion performed Mamushi with Yuki Chiba. Swift has stayed in the news for her endorsement of Kamala Harris, and when winning her aware she thanked her boyfriend Travis Kelce who may also now be encouraged to endorse Harris - recall other were involved with ERAS-ERIS, the goddess of discord. But Taylor Swift isn't as powerful as she may seem, certainly not to make her own decisions. Not only has she called out the Soros family for stripping her of music rights but most of her music itself is written by someone else. Jack Antonoff was behind ‘Look What You Made Me Do', and countless other songs not to mention his work with Lana Del Rey, Aaron Dessner was behind Willow, and countless other songs, and both Max Martin and his protege Shellback contribute heavily to her discography. People like Martin have been operating in the music industry for decades, writing dozens of hits - 26 Number One hits - for everyone from the Backstreet Boys and Brittany Spears (Hit Me Baby One More Time), to Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift. Further, he obtains the lyrics and beats through a sort of channeling. Even Elton John does this through mixing word cutouts to write songs. In the world of comics we find an equivalent character in Alan Moore, a magician behind iconic works like V For Vendetta and Watchmen. Moore is also open about his worship of a Greco-Roman snake god named Glycon, a deity of oracle and moneymaking. The difference between obtaining influence from the MUSES or power from unconscious DEMONS is what the byproduct of the contract is: beauty or ugliness. The song Mamushi features the profaning of and degrading not of America but of Japan, as Thee Stallion encourages Japanese girls to be promiscuous and lure men to their death. In the song, Megan literally is naked on a rock like a Siren, in a sacred Onsen, where she then pollutes the purifying water and transforms into a Mamushi snake to kill a man. A 2023 song by Sabrina Carpenter was filmed in a church and her video was so perverse and disgusting the priests had to re-bless the altar when she left. These images are far different than the music, sculptures, and paintings of artists throughout history. Perry's VMA performance featured the arch of hysteria from witchcraft, a portal, and we assume from the other side came an alien who Sabrina Carpenter kissed on television. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. You'll learn: Why ESFPs respond better to praise and play than punishment How to handle their impulsivity with empathy How their sensory gifts show up in art, performance, and sports What kinds of environments bring out their best If your child is equal parts sparkle and sensitivity, this episode will help you nurture their spirit while giving them the tools to thrive. She has over 10,000 hours of experience in education, both in the classroom and corporate sector. Even though she holds a Master's degree in education, she struggled to understand her neurodivergent and oppositional kids.  Inspired by her experience using Myers Briggs and the Enneagram with business teams, she spent over a decade researching temperament pattens to help family teams. She is a best-selling author and host of the Not So Normal Parenting podcast.   Her podcast is entitled Not So Normal Parenting because not only are she and her kids neurodivergent but some of her life experiences, such as driving off a cliff her wedding night and going viral for embarrassing her seventeen-year old son by dancing on a snowy and jammed interstate, fall into that category. In addition to being talked about by Hoda Kotb, the BackStreet Boys, and Princess Kate, even U2 singer Bono mentioned the incident in his autobiography.   Because Wendy herself has struggled as a helicopter parent, a cranky parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle……..a little bit less!   No Kids Wendy Gossett helps relationships by using temperament psychology and neuroscience to help couples buil deeper connections.
