We are all familiar with functional medicine and perhaps even functional fitness, but have you heard of functional joy? Our guest for this podcast episode is Radha Agrawal, a successful entrepreneur and the author of the book Belong. Radha joins us to discuss her organization, Daybreaker, which spans 28 cities and five continents with a mission to foster joy and community. Daybreaker's very first events in 2013 were community dance meetups held early in the morning that aimed to replicate the positive aspects of nightlife while excluding alcohol. The scope of their work continues to expand nine years on, but dance is still their primary tool. Radha is now writing another book and developing a curriculum to teach clinicians and others to systematically foster joy in their communities. Community is a factor critical to chronic disease prevention and reversal, so we invited Radha to share her extensive experience with this powerful predictor of health outcomes often overlooked by healthcare institutions. Download the episode to learn about: Consciously building communities How to foster joy for yourself and your patients The importance of hospitality and designing welcoming spaces in medicine The biochemistry of joy (D.O.S.E.) My writing practice is everything. It's how I sift through my thoughts in a way that feels meditative, and it helps me put words to what's intangible.I have found many answers and had epiphanies about the world around me and the world within me through writing.Paper holds power. The most beautiful thing about it is that it doesn't talk back – not really. It sits there holding crystal clear space, so that you can pour your mind onto its surface. Through my creative writing process, I've developed a few techniques that are tools in developing self awareness and personal growth. The work is intricate, sometimes difficult, but the relationship between you and yourself deserves nothing less.Open your heart and grab some paper. You'll want to take notes for this one.Follow @rileyblanksreed and explore www.wokebeauty.com to read more of what I have to say (about most things).Ocean Vuong said, “If you're working on a poem or a story, when you're hitting a dead end, when it's not going, take it with you. Get away from the desk. It means something is not happening. It doesn't mean you're blocked — I don't think writer's block is real. I think it's the mythos of capitalism — that you're always supposed to be producing; this anxiety of being productive and quantifying your self-worth through page counts and word counts. You're working, but you have to work differently now. Now you have to work with your body. Maybe there's questions you're not asking. Maybe you have to recite this poem and walk with it.”Explore the VIA diagram in the book, Belong, by Radha Agrawal. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this week's episode of Reset, Renew, Revive, we had a conversation with the powerful Radha Agrawal. Radha is the co-founder, CEO, and Chief Community Architect of Daybreaker, the early-morning dance and wellness movement and community. She uses the power of dance to connect and empower people of all shapes and sizes across the world. Radha talks about importance of finding or building your community. Many people want invitations but refuse to put in the work to actually make them. But Radha emphasizes the importance of knowing what your values and interests are because belief is the energy that is going to keep the community growing. When people believe in something, they go to it. We like to have faith in people or things in this world and Radha puts her faith into dance. It is the oldest form of expression and it's an art that makes her community. Radha is changing the game on how we start our day, with one dance and smile. Tune in to hear how dancing elevates our souls! KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps): [1:38] Feeling like you don't belong [5:36] How much agency we have to build a community to our liking [8:49] Why Radha decided to start Agrawal [7:12] incessant labeling of ourselves stops us from building [13:06] 4 hormones that really impact our life significantly [21:31] The importance of functional joy [26:16] Functional Joy membership field in the works [28:39] How Radha starts her day WHERE TO FIND THE GUEST: https://www.daybreaker.com/ MEMORABLE QUOTES: “My light was dim. I was radiating a version of myself that was not me. I think we all do that. We sort of pile on what society wants of us.” “If you build it, it will come. And so if you build your community with deep intention and prioritization, and focus, then businesses will come.” “I think with so many entrepreneurs who, when they sell their business, they have no one to celebrate it with because they spent their entire career heads down, cancelling on their friends…” “I think people don't realize how much agency we have to make friends and build our own tribe, and to be the person that goes out and does it.” “I think people are waiting for the invitation rather than creating the invitation.” “I am an extrovert, I am an introvert, I am socially anxious, I am, you know, whatever… we have so many labels for ourselves that we end up straight jacketing ourselves.” “DOSE is an acronym that stands for dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins.” “These four happy neurotransmitters are the building blocks of your joy, your happiness, and if you can learn how to unlock each of them, then that's how you can live a joyful, happy life everyday.” “What you eat actually directly contributes to your serotonin release in your body.

Without community, we can become isolated, which has been found to be connected with inflammation and can even negatively impact immune response. Moreover, whom you choose to be in community with also matters. Your immediate social circle—the four-to-five people you surround yourself with the most—has the greatest influence on your health. In today's episode, I talk with Radha Agrawal, Dan Buettner, and Dr. Vivek Murthy about why community matters, what we have learned from cultures that prioritize community in their population, and how to take care of our needs first before giving to others.Radha Agrawal is the Co-founder, CEO, and Chief Community Architect of Daybreaker, the early morning dance and wellness move-ment. Daybreaker currently holds events in 25 cities and more than a dozen college campuses around the world and has a community of almost half a million people. Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States from December 15, 2014 to April 21, 2017 and was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 23, 2021 as the 21st Surgeon General of the United States. In 2017, Dr. Murthy focused his attention on chronic stress and loneliness as prevalent problems that have profound implications for health, productivity, and happiness. Are you familiar with Daybreaker? Seven years ago, my friend Brianna Greenspan asked me if I was familiar with it (which I wasn't). She said, “It's amazing! It's like a LIVE Miracle Morning!” and she described it as a 3-hour experiential event that combines a high energy dance party with meditation, yoga, affirmations, and more. Needless to say, I was intrigued! :^) So, I reached out to the founder and CEO, Radha Agrawal, in the hopes that we might explore ways in which we could collaborate. Little did I know, she was an extraordinary entrepreneur who was making a huge impact. She's built and sold multiple 9-figure businesses, toured with Oprah, and has a Daybreaker community of over 500,000 people around the world. Today, I am very excited to bring Radha onto the podcast (for her 2nd time) so we can make an exciting announcement together about how DAYBREAKER will immediately begin integrating The Miracle Morning into their upcoming events – and you're invited to experience it in person! BTW, If you're interested in attending an upcoming event on the Daybreaker world tour and being one of the first to experience this Miracle Morning integration, you can see their tour schedule at https://daybreaker.com/World. Hi friends. On this weeks episode it's a non-book-review book-review! Featuring a book I read last year called Belong, written by Radha Agrawal. We get into a few of the key takeaways from the book but mostly we discuss community building and my dreams of creating a community for women (centred around work). I ramble a lot but I think the main idea is that I want to build an authentic community that supports working women who are questioning what they want out of their work. I'm playing around with the idea of there being a new wave of women who are seeking to find more purpose and fulfilment from their jobs but don't know how to. Do they pivot into a new career? Do they start a business? Do they just stick it out? These are things me and my sister and my girlfriends talk about, and I want to talk about it more. Do you have any of these same feelings about your work? Wanting more, wanting different, wanting better but not quite sure what that looks like for you? Reach out and let me know. Quote of the week "be easy, take your time, you are coming home. to yourself." Email me at imjealouspodcast@gmail.com or follow me on IG and DM me @NKEDO_fits I would love to hear from you ❤️
