“It’s great that I’m the first, but what’s most important is that I’m not the last.”If you’re a wine lover or a visionary, you are going to adore my guest today! Bertony Faustin is a philosopher, thought-provoker, and change-maker, and his spirit is one that will endure all obstacles and setbacks, all while inspiring others to do the same!In 2008, Bertony became the first recorded black winemaker in Oregon – and the journey that led him to this incredible accomplishment was not typical, nor could it have been. You are going to hear his entire story of how he pivoted from being an anesthesiologist to a successful trailblazer and futurist in the wine industry.Bertony embodies all the characteristics of a visionary leader. He’s looking to change the world and he’s doing that by courageously using his freedom of choice and breaking the societal stereotypes that sometimes hold people in their narrow boxes. He forges clarity into what the future should look like, builds connectedness in every arena, and shapes a positive culture for the next generation. While I was listening to his story, I particularly loved his mindset of taking leaps of passion instead of leaps of faith, and how his business signature is not the wines he produces but the taste of life and the experience he is offering to the people that cross his threshold at Abbey Creek Vineyard. For him, relational capital means more than all the money one can ascertain, and he constantly works on creating an industry culture based on meaningful connections.Listen to Episode 15 of Roar, and learn how you can change an industry by having the right vision. In 2008 Bertony Faustin became the 1st recorded black winemaker in Oregon. The journey that lead him to this incredible accomplishment was not typical nor could it have been. In and industry of legacy and privilege Bertony had neither, he was not the decedent of prominent wine lineage and his motivation was never strictly about the wine. His destiny was sown deeply into the fabric of family and living up to the expectations of his father. With so many entering the industry to become a renowned wine maker Bertony had bigger plans. He saw his opportunity to build a platform that would allow him to change the world. "I don't love the industry, I love what the industry allows me to do." Building the foundation to bring people together, break bread and develop community. His efforts allow for a deeper conversation into diversity, equity & inclusion.

Red, White & Black is a passion project and the brainchild of Bertony Faustin, proprietor of Abbey Creek Vineyard in North Plains, Oregon. The first recorded Black winemaker in Oregon, Bertony began the Red, White & Black journey to help identify and tell the stories of other minority winemakers. As the project has taken shape, more minorities in winemaking have surfaced and an important story has become ever more important. The purpose of Red White & Black is to tell the story of minority winemakers in Oregon. To highlight those people who are deeply entrenched, have their livelihood on the line but somehow are missed by the press and not often included openly in the larger Oregon wine community. This is to tell the story of what life is like, what hurdles, acceptances, challenges and opportunities exist. To share what it is like to be a person of color or LGBT in a generally white, high brow industry. But most importantly, this documentary is intended to encourage other minorities to step outside the boundaries put around them and pursue their dreams.

In this episode we had the privilege of speaking with Bertony Faustin of Abbey Creek Vineyard. Born from Haitian immigrant parents and a transplanted New Yorker, Bertony has found not only his family, but his destiny in Oregon wine country. An Anesthesia Technician by trade, Bertony started his wine career like many, somewhat by accident. It was the passing of his father in 2007 that ispired him to take that leap of faith as his family once did in the past. Noting his in-laws had a small vineyard, he began exploring the potential of making his own wine and gradually launched Abbey Creek Vineyard. Always a student and innovator, Bertony is producing a documentary called Red, White & Black .The first recorded Black winemaker in Oregon, Bertony began the Red, White & Black journey to help identify and tell the stories of other minority winemakers. As the project has taken shape, more minorities in winemaking have surfaced and an important story has become ever more important. Abbey Creek Vineyard is all Bertony, all his personality, style and grace. Get to know him and you know his wine.
