Implementing an occupational health and safety management system in an organization is crucial for both employees and employers, as it helps to address and control hazards in a safe and consistent manner. Ontario's Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development recognizes two systems: COR® 2020 and ISO 45001:2018. On this episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast, Carson Powell and Cameron Mitchell from AudEng International discuss the value of, and differences between, both systems. Both Carson and Cameron are certified occupational health and safety management system auditors for both COR® 2020 and ISO 45001:2018.Carson and Cameron emphasize the importance of having a functional health and safety management system, as well as understanding which system may be better suited for an organization. Facilitating Public Deliberations
Episode 3 The history of deliberative mini-public with John Gastil

Facilitating Public Deliberations

In this episode, Carson speaks with Professor John Gastil from Penn State University about the history and development of deliberative mini-publics.    John is the author of many books and papers on deliberative democracy including Democracy in Small Groups and is currently undertaking research on the Oregon Citizens' Initiative Review and has a book coming out about this research soon.   John identifies that the term mini-public has become a term of art and means a randomly selected group with a focused charge, although there is a lot of varieties to how these processes are designed. The core idea of deliberation is ‘weighing’ of evidence, concerns, perspectives before making a decision or recommendation.   John sees these type of processes starting with Ned Crosby (see episode 1) and Peter Dienel (see episode 2). With the next major developments being deliberative polls run by James Fishkin (who we will interview in a later episode) the British Columbia’s Citizens’ Assembly where a citizens’ assembly was charged with drafting new legislation the Oregon Citizens’ Initiative Review which he is researching, and finally The Irish Citizens’ Assemblies which have had perhaps the most real-world impact.  John suggests that the inter-disciplinary nature of deliberative democracy and the practical nature of the field may be both strengths and weaknesses for the field. Whilst he has an affinity with the practical side of facilitation deliberative processes he sees that his value add is being able to get research grants and write academic articles.   Both Carson and John note that facilitators often come from backgrounds where they have developed interpersonal skills particularly around working with groups, for example as educators, within religious groups. He recommends the book Freedom is an Endless Meeting by Francesca Poletta which talks about group processes in social movements.    He thinks the processes of deliberative mini-publics have become more structured over time and he sees this as a good thing because structure and process provide protection to all participants. See The Tyranny of Structurelessness by Jo Freeman.   John identifies the best facilitators as being  humble yet confident good listeners, and  flexible. John and Carson agree that having more than one facilitator allows for a range of skills to be made available to the deliberative mini-public as well as a way to build the skills of facilitators new to the deliberative processes. Sometimes co-facilitation is done by splitting the focus of facilitation roles between process and task.   John suggests that we should think about both deliberative democracy and democratic deliberation to provide a focus on different aspects of the process.    His key conclusion is that deliberative mini-publics work - they demonstrate that all is not lost in democracy today.    Music acknowledgement.

The Seahawks had the top rushing attack in the NFL last season. With that in mind, one of the questions that people, particularly in the fantasy football world, seem to be struggling with right now is which Seahawks running back should be drafted first? To those who watch Seahawks football, Chris Carson seems like the obvious answer after becoming the first 1,000-yard rusher since Marshawn Lynch. But Rashaad Penny seems to be getting a lot of hype to take over that top role this year.  Also, who now becomes the third down back now that Mike Davis is gone? A vast majority of passes went to Davis in 2018. Both Carson and Penny had a similar number in terms of yard per attempt when catching the ball. Carson also feels like the best choice here, and if that happens, does that mean Penny could see majority of carries in early downs? Who else makes the team at running back beyond the two obvious choices? We did into all these questions and more on this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

During an Australian ABC News interview, Sex Expert Deanne Carson, suggested that parents should gain their babies consent before changing diapers.  The subject was taken up by Tucker Carlson in an interview with Cathy Areu in his show’s segment titled “The Liberal Sherpa”.  Areu expressed support for gaining babies consent before changing diapers.  Both Carson and Areu appear to be educated, accomplished and successful. With individuals of this apparent caliber asserting that parents should gain consent from babies, does it mean that parenting is headed in a “new improved” direction?  Unlike parents 50 to 100 years ago, many parents will not use spankings as a means of disciplining their children.  Decades ago spankings were traded in for timeouts and a great number of people bought into that then “new” style of parenting.  Is this another “new” style of parenting on the horizon?  If so, is this one that should be embraced?  If a new style of parenting is embraced, how should defiant children be handled? https://www.fatherly.com/news/deanne-carson-consent-change-diapers/ http://video.foxnews.com/v/5786988752001/?#sp=show-clips https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/13/health/consequence-contract-parenting-strauss/index.html Please feel free to phone into the Virtual Living room with your comments or questions.  We air programs on Blog Talk Radio at the following times: Sun 1:30pm, Mon 8:00pm, Tue 8:00pm, Wed 7:00pm, Thu 8:00pm, Fri 7:00pm & Sat 9:00am.  All times are Eastern Standard Time.

Welcome back to another episode of DrumGAB podcast. One-Up Drum Vids is a very interesting project to me and in a lot of ways speaks to me in terms of how to create content. I enjoy seeing people that are creative and have a high attention to detail. Carson’s videos are consistently great and I when he posts something, I never skip over it. I always want to see what it is that he is up to and the music he is creating. In many cases, I prefer what he comes up with for drum sounds, compositions, and execution over the originals. You can’t replace human interpretation and performance with a drum machine or computer. So with the rad content, he puts out, I felt like he and I were going to have many common interests that we would discover and talk about throughout the podcast. Sometimes you just know the guest suits the show. I had prepared an outline for the interview, fail-safe shit, and I pretty much botched my own interview. Within a few minutes, I glossed over about half of the points that I wrote down and so as a result, most of this is ACTUALLY just a conversation. Carson, on the day of the interview, hit 10K subs on YouTube, so we open things up talking about his content on YouTube and the challenges that were involved. Carson logged 60hrs on the Matt Garstka Challenge video….and I believe that video just shy of 8 minutes. That is seriously crazy. Here is the link to that video. Back a few months ago, Carson got a chance to do some work with a band names Paper Route. It came out of nowhere for him and it involved processes that he has not really had much experience with. Carson played some gigs that were out of his comfort zone. Low volume situations playing in highly resonant rooms were a particular challenge. We talk about playing with intensity at low volumes and reference a particular musician that does this with considerable conviction. Both Carson and I both feel that “chops” videos are overdone and we have a mutual love for groove and feel. It is refreshing to see videos that focus on the importance of knowing how a beat really sits. The devil is in the details with the stuff Carson does. He creates a new level of pocket that I don’t hear much and it is so addictive to listen to. One of the biggest factors as to why I had Carson on the show, was because I knew we both loved instrumental hip hop….and we are talking about the good stuff. I enjoy talking about records and music and so there is some time in the podcast dedicated to some good tune GAB. Overall, this is a really fun hang. It’ll go down as a classic in the library of DrumGAB podcast. Check it. Instagram | Facebook | YouTube www.drumgab.com
