Hall of Fame Michigan State University Spartans Men's Basketball Coach Tom Izzo previews the 2023/24 season. In his opening comments, Izzo says he's “excited to be back,” and he says he loves his team. He says he's proud of his blue-collar program, too. Conversation Highlights: (3:37) – “We're a week away from Midnight Madness. It's important that we reengage after a lot of what we've been through the last couple years.” (4:55) – “We also have two exhibition games.   (6:26) – “I have seen our team in the Top 5 and Top 10. People have asked me if I like that. And I always say no; I love it. We're looking forward to living up to expectations.” (7:48) – Izzo on his seniors (9:07) – Izzo on his juniors (10:05) – Izzo on his sophomores (11:18) – Izzo on his freshmen (14:18) – More on Coen Carr and the pros and cons of summer basketball. “It gives our players a chance to learn how to act in front of people. They're really good kids. I'm blessed with what I have right now.” (16:24) – On the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, the importance of high school coaches, and the state of college basketball. “It's the Jud Heathcote rule, 27 years later, that the most important human beings on the planet are high school coaches. I really do believe that.” (18:48) – More on Jeremy Fears and Tom's thoughts on competition making the team better. “Mateen was my best freshman leader. There have only been a couple guys – Mateen and Tum Tum – who have ‘it.' Jeremy Fears has ‘it.'” (21:14) – As he looks around college basketball, his thoughts on reduced opportunities for freshmen because of the portal. “I'm going to do what I do. And sooner or later it's probably going to get me. I'm going to have fun in the meantime, and I'm going to enjoy the fight to keep my program based on relationships and not transactions. At Michigan State, there are a couple things that aren't going to change until the day I walk off this stage. We're going to stay a blue-collar place. The second thing is relationships matter to me.” (25:58) – On the depth at the guard position. “I've done some things for players they better appreciate. I could have gone into the portal, too. They could have gone; I could have gone. I trusted and believed in them. I think they trusted and believed in me. What a great marriage and a great opportunity.” (29:25) – More on Carson Cooper. “Right now, I have as good a staff as I've had.” (31:32) – On how he will balance talented upperclassmen with a stellar freshmen class. “I have to sell winning and personal success. That is a challenge. Winning brings personal success. Personal success doesn't always bring winning.” (34:26) – More on Jaden Akins. “Jaden can be one of the best two-way players, not just in the league, but in the whole country.” (36:24) – On what role he'll play in finding MSU's next football coach. “I'm a sounding board. That doesn't mean I'm in on the decision making. Whatever Alan needs me to do, I'm suiting up and I'm there for him.” (39:25) – Do you feel any more weight than you normally would to give your fan base, alumni, students, and faculty something with this basketball team? “Yes. I'm not excited that I have to feel that way, but I'm proud that I get the opportunity to represent the 650,000 living alumni and a lot of good friends of mine and a lot of people who have done a lot of good for this place. I feel it's a privilege to have the opportunity to help bring us closer together.”  (43:31) – On the prospects of winning a second national championship. “Do I say it's Final Four of National Championship or bust? I say that's the goal. I'm realistic enough to know there are a lot of factors.” (47:36) – You seem to be speaking with more bravado this season…? “We and I have earned what we've got. We've been through a lot of tough times both on and off the court. We're still standing. Let's take advantage of that and stay focused the best we can. I hope that I can bring this place that I love so much what we deserve and make people feel good and smile.” (50:52) – Where do you see the need for the most improvement? “The biggest thing right now is that we have to become a better rebounding team. I'm most excited that I have a group of guys together that have had options to leave and who have stayed. I want to try to win another championship someday. But I also want to keep this the great place I know it is. If that's pressure and the weight of the world, that's what I signed up for, and, more importantly, that's what I get to do.” Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you listen.

August 2, 2023: MSU sophomore big man Carson Cooper joined us to talk about his strange and sudden recruitment to Michigan State, last season, the off season, and what he expects coming into the year. Carson talked to us about how he and the other centers have transformed their bodies in the off season and what practices are like with the freshmen. Not only has Cooper been working on his upper body in strength training but his overall game including running the floor. Carson said he expects that the teams this year will be doing a whole lot more running and be improved on the offensive glass. But will he have a green light to shoot 3s? Are you looking for Spartan gear? There's only one place to go to get your MSU T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts — Nudge Printing. (https://www.nudgeprinting.com) Nudge is owned and operated by Gabe and Brittany, two MSU alums. The business is operated out of Michigan and screen prints super high quality products. They also have a large assortment of apparel for other schools as well as stickers for your wall, car, or computer. You can also buy our merchandise to sport around town where all the sales proceeds go to support the show. If you have a home in Michigan you know the importance of clearing water efficiently away from your home off the roof. Unfortunately, the outdoor beauty of Michigan means you have to deal with leaves and debris that pile up in your gutters. The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.

January 24, 2023: Iowa is coming to town and bringing another fantastic Murray brother into the Breslin on Thursday evening. Fran McCaffrey once again has a team with a very good offensive efficiency rating. And... once again they are terrible on defense. Michigan State looks to defend their home court and return to winning ways before heading on the road next Sunday at West Lafayette. Interesting story lines abound in this game. Will Malik Hall return to the court? Patrick McCaffrey? Both players are critical to their team's success and how well and how much they play could decide the game's outcome. Also, will we continue to see a progression at the 5 for MSU in improved play from freshmen Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper? Listen to our preseason episode on Iowa here. November 25, 2022: Prior to leaving for Portland, OR for the tipoff of the PK85 against Alabama, Michigan State suffered two huge losses to injuries - Malik Hall, and Jaden Akins. Akins was sidelined after the Villanova game where he sustained a new injury to his previously injured foot that is not deemed serious but will be rested for a few games. Unfortunately, Malik Hall had a non-operative stress reaction injury to his foot in practice on Monday which will keep him out of action for about 3 weeks. Despite those key losses in personnel, the Spartans battled hard and managed to compete with Alabama in the first half mostly due to the scoring from Tyson Walker. However, the second half saw a few more shots miss for MSU and Alabama got a little hot from 3 allowing them to pull away. Freshman Brandon Miller led the way for the Crimson Tide with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Bright spots to the game included the extended minutes to freshmen Jaxon Kohler, Tre Hollomam, and Carson Cooper who all showed signs of progression from the start of the season. Pierre Brooks played 33 minutes and showed some signs of great play logging 9 rebounds with 4 offensive but also looked lost on defensive assignments against a team that was prepared to punish defensive lapses. We talked about the potentially larger than expected role of Carson Cooper, whether Mady Sissoko can hang at the 5 spot, and what it will take for MSU to make a deep run in March or flame out and miss the tourney entirely. Additionally, Graham gave his thoughts on how recruiting has changed and whether Izzo is changing his philosophy in the face of a general lack of talent in Michigan and the presence of easy transfers and NIL. Finally, we touched briefly on what might happen to the NCAA tournament if it expands and how Couch thinks it would be ok so long as they make certain provisions in expanding the field. October 17, 2022: Our final Big Ten Preview installment is the most important - the Michigan State Spartans. We finished our annual preseason deep dive on each player, things to watch, and predictions for the year. Exiting this year are Gabe Brown, Marcus Bingham, Max Christie, and Julius Marble. New players are freshmen Jaxon Kohler, Tre Holloman, Carson Cooper and grad transfer Jason Whitens (who was on the team last year but tore his ACL in the exhibition opener against Ferris State.) Last year, the Spartans were fantastic shooting the 3 but uncharacteristically struggled to rebound the basketball and defend in the post. That contributed to their #42 overall KenPom ranking as they had one of the worst defensive rankings for an MSU team since 2006. Unfortunately, a lot of areas in which MSU needed improved play just didn't materialize last year. The team just didn't seem to gel and figure out their roles until perhaps the last two weeks of the year - just in time for the Big Ten tournament and NCAA tourney. The most obvious question this year is what will happen at the 5 spot with the departures of Bingham and Marble. The spartans will have to rely on foul-prone Mady Sissoko and a pair of true freshmen in Kohler and Cooper to try and get by. If that spot struggles, it might be a very long year our guys as the Big Ten still have a lot of teams with good centers. The other big question is can players like Akins and Brooks elevate their game and become big time contributors. Rod and Eric take the deep dive to prepare yourself for the season to come. Finding and Understanding Conflict to Create True Resolutions With Jenn Beninger & Carson Cooper

Conflict can be a loud disagreement or an encompassing silence that freezes out communication and progress. No matter how it is manifested, it can cost entrepreneurs, businesses, organizations, and individuals time and money that they didn’t realize. On today’s show, I have conflict resolution experts Jenn Beninger and Carson Cooper here to talk about problems created by conflict and how to find solutions. We talk about how underlying conflict can cause turnover and cost time and money. It can arise between partners, clients, vendors, and colleagues. Jenn and Carson talk us through the many hidden costs of conflict, and then they explain some of the questions that can be asked to find out where each party is coming from to begin chipping away at a solution. You can find Jenn & Carson here: Ask Loral Show Notes: [01:31] Carson has been in the conflict resolution field for the last 7 years and he's been coaching for the last 10 years. He has a master's degree in negotiation, conflict resolution, and peace building. He's also worked as a lead trainer and mediator. [02:05] Jenn has a bachelor's degree in psychology, and she is a master trainer in NLP. She has coached hundreds of clients in dealing with conflict. [03:05] Some of the ways that conflict costs businesses money include destroying the culture and the employee and client mindset.  High turnover is another issue. [05:25] Conflict can create indirect and hidden costs that just mount up. [07:21] Turnover, hiring, and training is a huge cost of conflict. [08:01] Entrepreneurs that have conflict with teams and vendors is also a huge loss of time as vendors and contractors are changed. This results in loss of income. [09:16] Conflicts in partnerships can cost an entire deal. [10:07] Trust is a confidence of a positive expectation. Distrust is where negative assumptions are made. Companies need to build trust and find out where the distrust is. [12:18] Clients can show up with a presenting problem, but there is always a greater problem that is affecting them. The distrust can even affect future businesses. [13:46] Become aware of the language and dangerous mindsets. Also watch out when people are really defensive or blaming or shaming. [15:33] What are people saying and how are they asking questions. People come into conflict with their judgement and perspective. What does this represent to you and what is your definition of? [17:09] Understand where people are coming from. In every conflict, people are protecting something. Find what they are protecting and why this conflict is so important to them. [19:25] Try to set in a goal-oriented action plan where people are looking at what they want as opposed to what they don't want. [21:00] Jenn and Carson are here to help support you in your solution. You can jump on a call with them and spend an hour. [23:26] Look deep at the places with your life and get unstuck. [23:55] The quicker you resolve the challenges in your life the more time you have to open up to bigger opportunities and more wealth. Links and Resources: Loral’s Real Money Talks
