He earned a master of theology degree from Harvard Divinity School and a doctorate in ministry from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. As a Charles E. Merrill fellow at Harvard he studied applied theology under the direction of Harvey Cox. He also completed a one-year internship in clinical pastoral education at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
