Welcome to this episode in the fifth series of Local History Matters, the podcast run by the British Association for Local History (BALH) to highlight hidden local histories. In this series, we will be discussing with researchers how they got into their field of study, and what their topic can tell us about local history more generally. In this episode, Dr María Grove-Gordillo shares her research into English merchants operating in Spain during the 16th century, and how the Spanish saw the armada and counter-armada. Dr María Grove-Gordillo is a research fellow at Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg, where she is interested in the Anglo-Spanish Trade between the 16th and 18th centuries as well as the digital humanities. She has a PhD in Early Modern History from the University of Seville. Auto - Rund ums Auto.

In this episode of the Risen Fallen Podcast, I sit down with Sean Martin — singer, guitarist, songwriter, and the driving force behind The Quarantined — for a powerful conversation about music, purpose, struggle, and what it means to create something real in a world that rewards conformity. The Quarantined is a grunge/punk/metal project led by Sean, built around socially critical songwriting and themes like politics, trauma, addiction, war, and resilience. Sean's story goes way deeper than just the music. He's a Musicians Institute alumnus, a longtime performer and songwriter, and a U.S. Army Airborne Infantry veteran who has become an advocate for veterans' mental health and PTSD awareness. His work with The Quarantined reflects that lived experience, blending aggressive rock energy with deeply personal and socially conscious themes. We also talk about the evolution of The Quarantined, from their earlier releases and live shows in Southern California to newer music like Aversion to Normalcy, the band's 2025 EP recorded in Nashville at Blackbird Studios and Sound Emporium. The release was executive produced by Sean Martin and produced with Nathan Yarborough, with the band's official bio describing it as a cathartic confrontation with trauma, resilience, and the illusion of “normal” in a fractured world. The band's momentum has been growing fast. Their official site says the recent singles tied to Aversion to Normalcy have surpassed 600,000–900,000 Spotify streams and generated more than 40 million TikTok views, while Apple Music lists Aversion to Normalcy as their latest release and highlights songs like “Nemesis (friend of mine),” “Trendsetter,” “Shadow (on my back),” “Skeleton Chair,” and “Unspoken.” Sean also has press recognition connected to The Quarantined and related releases, with the band's official site citing coverage from Rolling Stone UK, USA Today, and LA Weekly. If you're into rock podcasts, grunge revival, independent music, songwriting, mental health conversations, veteran stories, PTSD recovery, and authentic artist interviews, this is an episode you'll want to hear. Award-winning singer/songwriter John Galea releases his latest single “Songwriter” on March 27th. Galea continues to hone his craft and has been working with the top producers and writers from around the world, including Grammy-nominated production team ‘The Monarch' (Rita Ora, Chris Brown); Los Angeles-based ‘Beluga Heights' (Britney Spears, Jason Derulo, Rihanna), among others. 2026 now sees him release his first single, “Songwriter,” from his long-awaited debut album set for release early next year. The gospel-inspired love song, which was written by Galea, was co-produced by John & Oscar Lo Brutto (Wretch32, Scorcher) and has been remixed by Matt Pop & OLB, and its official music video was recently filmed on location in Central London.“Songwriter” follows the success of Galea's 5 Independent EP's starting with The Scrapbook EP (2012), Under Attack (2013), Notes From My Piano (2014) and ‘Missing Pages' (2016) which featured single ‘When You Truly Love Someone' which hit Top 10 in the Commercial Charts in 2017, which featured Celebrity Gemma Oaten in the music video. John followed up that success with his Christmas EP ' Christmas Round The Piano' (2018), scoring a Top 30 iTunes Charting track in 2019 with his Christmas song 'A Simple Christmas'. Galea followed up that success with his hit single “Hero Within You” featuring Guildhall Opera Singing Sensation Hannah Long. 2020 saw John score his first iTunes Number #1 in 2020 with his track ‘Hero Within You' recorded with Singing sensation Hannah Long & John teamed up with Chart topping Rapper Ironik on the single ‘Don't Wanna Die' which was the first single taken from his 6th EP ‘The Art Of Collaboration'.When asked about his latest single Galea said, “‘Songwriter' was one of the longest songs I've taken to write, and probably now my favorite. It's taken literally years! I have had so many versions that have had different hooks or vibes and they just didn't feel right, then finally writing my 1st album, I sat down at my piano and the song just fell into place. The song is all about sharing whatever you have with the most special person in the world.”Galea started songwriting when he was 13 after winning a UK National Songwriting Contest with his track “I Am Not An Angel.” Following that win he started writing for artists such as Lao Ra (Jesus Made Me Bad), Thea Garrett (Frontline) & Gianluca Bezzina (Come Float Away) and more! Around this time his track “Trendsetter” was synced on US TV. Galea has also toured the UK supporting the likes of McFly and Boyzlife, as well as performing on the main stage for London Pride, Birmingham Pride, Northern Pride, Norwich Pride, as well as the main stage on festivals like The Sundown Festival and more. There are many reasons to feel uneasy these days. Most of us are walking around with frazzled nervous systems that we don't know how to soothe. Stress and anxiety have become so commonplace that we don't even realize how off kilter we are on a daily basis. Thankfully, there are many ways to calm our bodies if we're willing to pay attention. Tending to our nervous systems is not frivolous, it's critical work if we want to show up fully to our lives each day. Take a breath, find a pen and paper, and begin the process of creating an internal space of safety. „Brich aus der Norm aus. Verändere Deinen lyf-Style“ Der Reiseradio Talk über eine Hotelmarke mit neuer Philosophie Podcast: lyf-style and Co-Living Banken und Business – Skyline von Frankfurt am Main – Foto: Rüdiger Edelmann / ttb-media TON-TEXT-BILD „Der neue Weg dazu zu gehören“ Vangelis Porikis – Head of Corporate Services & lyf Europe – Foto: The Ascott Limited Hotels Das ist mal eine Ansage. Neue Generationen wollen offensichtlich andere Hotels. Hier findet man neben anderen: 25 hours, Scandic, Hampton by Hilton, Innside, Motel One, moxy, B&B, A&O Hotels & Hostels. Modern, stylisch und trotzdem einladend. lyf East Frankfurt: Hier geht’s lang – Foto: Rüdiger Edelmann /ttb-media TON-TEXT-BILD USP und Markencharakter Ich lese in der Markencharakterisierung über die Zielgruppe: lyf is for the go-getters, the dreamers, the trend-setters and those with a thirst for authenticity. “God tore me down to build me up” ~ Trendsetter Sense Trendsetter Sense joins Lalaa Shepard on a brand new episode of Skipping Class, presented by The Progress Report, to reflect on his journey through the legendary mixtape era, his close relationship with DJ Drama and Don Cannon, and how faith ultimately led him into Gospel Hip Hop. During the conversation, Trendsetter Sense opens up about forming The Aphilliates alongside DJ Drama and Don Cannon, becoming a DJ at just 17 years old while attending Clark Atlanta University, and building his name during one of the most influential eras in hip hop history. He also speaks on working alongside artists like Young Dro, collaborating with Zaytoven and 1K Phew on his new single “LORD JESUS,” and making history performing Gospel Hip Hop at Rolling Loud. Trendsetter Sense shares personal stories about his upbringing in Philadelphia, his transition to Atlanta, and the life lessons that shaped both his career and spiritual growth. This episode offers powerful insight into longevity, purpose, faith, and what it truly means to evolve while staying true to your calling. Hey everyone, it's Emma Weissmann, the host of Humans in the Hot Seat, a spinoff series from Humans of Travel. This Hot Seat episode is a little different from our normal format; today, I've invited on Mindy Poder, Editor-in-Chief of TravelAge West, to share some information on the upcoming TravelAge West Trendsetter Awards, which honor top travel advisors. Nominations for the awards open in one week, on Feb. 2, and the application period runs until mid-March, with finalists announced in early April. Advisors can self-nominate, or nominate their peers. During this episode, Poder and I will share more about the five individual categories we're judging (Upward Bound, Rockstar Advisor Under 40, Saving the Day, Best Use of Social Media, Best Targeted Marketing Idea and Best Group Booking Effort) and we'll offer some tips on making your application stand out. We'll also share some application red flags we look out for, and share more about the winners' prizes (think: travel prizes, attendance at the WAVE Awards Gala in LA, a feature in TravelAge West and more!) Presented by 6D Helmets Unless you're one of the elite few who earn a factory ride, racing Supercross and motocross professionally is not sustainable for years on end. Finding a career that keeps you involved in the sport you love is the dream for most racers when they retire, but even that can be a challenge. Jared Hicks was a Supercross privateer who teamed up with German privateer Philipp Klakow to start a custom graphics company to support their racing habit, way back in 2011. These days, Backyard Design USA has grown exponentially, and Hicks and Klakow are working full-time to grow their company from both sides of the globe. Hicks is also one of Dirt Bike Magazine's staple test riders, so he still gets to spend plenty of time in the saddle of a motocross bike. Jared joins us on this week's 6D Helmets Midweek Podcast for a super-enjoyable chat!
