This week on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 11, the queens of Bracket 2 put their instructional skills to the test as they create a series of over-the-top how-to videos. From cooking tutorials to zombie survival guides, the queens attempt to educate the children while fighting for valuable points in the competition. Joe and Taylor break down the challenge, debate the judges' decisions, discuss the increasingly exhausting alliance conversations, and weigh in on a farm-themed runway that delivered everything from hay couture to questionable tractor fashion. Gina Gershon arrives ready to play and earns rave reviews as a guest judge. The hosts discuss whether the challenge format helped or hurt the queens. Alliance talk continues to dominate the workroom conversation. Joe shares strong opinions about washing chicken. April Carrion and Silky Nutmeg Ganache's playful rivalry fizzles before it can become real drama. Aura Mayari's zombie-themed tutorial leaves the hosts unconvinced. Crystal Methyd channels absurdist comedy in one of the episode's strongest performances. Selena EsTitties and Silky's videos spark a conversation about stereotypes and comedy. The hosts break down every look from the "Barned This Way" runway. Debate over whether the judges picked the correct Top 2 queens. Joe and Taylor disagree with the lip sync outcome. An unexpected tangent about banana splits, Wiener Schnitzel, and childhood dessert memories. April Carrion serves high-fashion hay couture. Aura Mayari transforms into a glamorous barn owl. Crystal Methyd delivers another delightfully bizarre presentation. Silky Nutmeg Ganache brings the dairy farm to the runway. Vivacious attempts tractor-inspired club kid couture. With alliances and point distribution continuing to dominate the narrative, Joe and Taylor find themselves wishing for more organic drama and character development. Still, strong guest judging from Gina Gershon, a few memorable challenge performances, and a surprisingly effective lip sync keep the episode moving as the season heads toward its merge. Joe and Taylor are back to break down RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 11 Episode 4, “It Takes Two,” and this one has everything: butter-themed runway looks, chaotic duet pairings, desperate point politicking, and a legendary lip sync song that sends Joe into full gay-history mode. The duo discusses Crystal Methyd's stunning runway package, Silky Nutmeg Ganache's evolution as reality TV chaos incarnate, and why Vivacious remains compelling television even when the competition may no longer fit her strengths. They also debate whether Aura Mayari deserved the lip sync win, unpack Selena's increasingly frantic gameplay, and question whether strategic alliances in this format actually work. #327. Happy Birthday, Dillon! We hope you got to celebrate with something like carrot cake. Carrot cake: vegetable. And I don't care who knows it anymore. Maybe we should get a shirt made which says, “Vegetables are more easily understood the less we understand about them” and wear it all over the world to let everyone know what we're all about. Scottie Pippin would know it by know if we did. We would also need to make a sweater to put on during sweater weather to be cozy while we sip on something pumpkin spice. In the meantime, novel Mt. Dew flavors will do. Every season has its ups downs. All four of them are good enough for us, though some just barely. All of that and we're streaming some stuff! Sylvia Lerch Interview Episode 545

Matt Crawford speaks with author Sylvia Lerch about her book, Grasp the Nettle. Set in a remote district of Western Australia in the 1920s, an era which outlawed suicide, an unidentified body has been found and police are treating the death as suspicious. The story presents a chance for strangers (the reader) to peruse the very private diaries of the protagonists. Intriguingly, this is like peeping through the coin slot of a piggy bank to count the wealth inside. Elsie has married Tom in an arrangement brokered by her brother. Tom's job is delivering the Royal Mail, and it takes him away from home for weeks at a time. Vivacious, imaginative young Elsie must entertain herself in their isolated, unsophisticated bush hut. Married women were not allowed to be financially independent. Grasp the Nettle is not a fairytale ‘lived happily ever after' romance, but a lode of accurate historical data balanced by details of underlined moral standards of life before the advent of reliable contraceptives, and acknowledgement of gender diversity. In those harsh times, things that are commonplace for us today were yet to be invented: like mobile phones, internet communications, and GPS. There were not even engineered roads through country districts in this vast nation, Australia. Grasp the Nettle poses the question: how did people cope with life's challenges?

Episode 142 Laura Kempton Part 1 of 2 Vivacious, fun-loving, and popular twenty-three year old Laura Kempton was a fixture in the downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire social scene in 1981. On the night of Sunday, September 27 th , she was seen out late at a local club with a girlfriend. And then she went home, alone. Sometime in the wee hours, someone broke a panel out of her front door, entered her apartment, and raped and killed Laura. Her vicious slaying shocked the small city, and police had their hands full with a complex investigation trying to ferret out the killer among all the people Laura knew. And then, a year later, it happened again. Tammy Little's murder bore undeniable similarities to Laura's, and both remained unsolved for decades. Now, we have a resolution in Laura's case, thanks to IGG. Whether Tammy was indeed killed by the same person remains to be seen.   To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription. No one knew this world better or ruled over it with more authority than Mollie Moon. With her husband Henry Lee Moon, the longtime publicist for the NAACP, Mollie became half of one of the most influential couples of the period. Vivacious and intellectually curious, Mollie frequently hosted political salons attended by guests ranging from Langston Hughes to Lorraine Hansberry. She was a force behind the mutual aid network that connected Black churches, domestic and blue-collar laborers, social clubs, and sororities and fraternities across the country. Historian and cultural critic Tanisha C. Our Secret Society: Mollie Moon and the Glamour, Money, and Power Behind the Civil Rights Movement (Amistad Press, 2024) brilliantly illuminates a little known yet highly significant aspect of the civil rights movement that has been long overlooked—the powerhouse fundraising effort that supported the movement—the luncheons, galas, cabarets, and traveling exhibitions attended by middle-class and working-class Black families, the Negro press, and titans of industry, including Winthrop Rockefeller. As the president of the National Urban League Guild, the fundraising arm of the National Urban League; Mollie raised millions to fund grassroots activists battling for economic justice and racial equality. She was a force behind the mutual aid network that connected Black churches, domestic and blue-collar laborers, social clubs, and sororities and fraternities across the country. Historian and cultural critic Tanisha C. Ford brings Mollie into focus as never before, charting her rise from Jim Crow Mississippi to doyenne of Manhattan and Harlem, where she became one of the most influential philanthropists of her time—a woman feared, resented, yet widely respected. She chronicles Mollie's larger-than-life antics through exhaustive research, never-before-revealed letters, and dozens of interviews. Our Secret Society ushers us into a world with its own rhythm and rules, led by its own Who's Who of African Americans in politics, sports, business, and entertainment. It is both a searing portrait of a remarkable period in America, spanning from the early 1930s through the late 1960s, and a strategic economic blueprint today's activists can emulate. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 25, 2024 is: vivacious • vuh-VAY-shus • adjective Someone or something described as vivacious is happy and lively in an appealing way. // Our vivacious host's bubbly humor and welcoming spirit quickly set everyone at ease. See the entry > Examples: “Mikayla Nogueira staked her claim in the beauty space on TikTok by grabbing the attention of viewers through her incredible makeup skills, her vivacious energy and, of course, her Boston accent.” — Kerry Justich, Yahoo! Life, 2 Nov. 2023 Did you know? Vivacious may not be onomatopoeic in a strict sense, but there's definitely something lively—maybe even a bit va-va-voom—in the way its three syllables trip off the tongue. Perhaps this is why it has appealed to English speakers since the mid-1600s, when it was formed from the Latin adjective vivax meaning “long-lived, vigorous, or high-spirited.” Vivax comes from the verb vivere, meaning “to live.” Other English descendants of vivere include survive, revive, and victual—all of which came to life during the 15th century—and vivid and convivial, both of which surfaced around the same time as vivacious. Somewhat surprisingly, the word live is unrelated; it comes to us from the Old English word libban.

Chapter 4 - Horace SlughornDespite the fact that he had spent every waking moment of the past few days hoping desperately that Dumbledore would indeed come to fetch him, Harry felt distinctly awkward as they set off down Privet Drive together. He had never had a proper conversation with his headmaster outside Hogwarts before; there was usually a desk between them. Q1 - What is one question you'd ask Dumbledore if you could ask him anything?‘Keep your wand at the ready, Harry,' he said brightly. ‘But I thought I'm not allowed to use magic outside school, sir?' ‘If there is an attack,' said Dumbledore, ‘I give you permission to use any counter-jinx or -curse that might occur to you. However, I do not think you need worry about being attacked tonight.' ‘Why not, sir?' ‘You are with me,' said Dumbledore simply.Q2 - Is Dumbledore arrogant to say this?Q3 - Who in the wizarding world would you feel completely safe around?‘So tell me, Harry,' said Dumbledore. ‘Your scar … has it been hurting at all?' Harry raised a hand unconsciously to his forehead and rubbed the lightning-shaped mark. ‘No,' he said, ‘and I've been wondering about that. I thought it would be burning all the time now Voldemort's getting so powerful again.' He glanced up at Dumbledore and saw that he was wearing a satisfied expression. ‘I, on the other hand, thought otherwise,' said Dumbledore. ‘Lord Voldemort has finally realized the dangerous access to his thoughts and feelings you have been enjoying. It appears that he is now employing Occlumency against you.'Q4 - Is the Dark Lord smart to employ this?Dumbledore had pointed with his injured hand. ‘Professor, what happened to your –?' ‘I have no time to explain now,' said Dumbledore. ‘It is a thrilling tale, I wish to do it justice.'Q5 - What happened to his hand?‘Sir – I got a Ministry of Magic leaflet by owl, about security measures we should all take against the Death Eaters …' ‘Yes, I received one myself,' said Dumbledore, still smiling. ‘Did you find it useful?' ‘Not really.' ‘No, I thought not. You have not asked me, for instance, what is my favorite flavor of jam, to check that I am indeed Professor Dumbledore, and not an impostor.'‘ I didn't …' Harry began, not entirely sure whether he was being reprimanded or not. ‘For future reference, Harry, it is raspberry … although of course, if I were a Death Eater, I would have been sure to research my own jam-preferences before impersonating myself.'Q6 - What is your favorite flavor of jam?‘Well, on that leaflet, it said something about Inferi. What exactly are they? The leaflet wasn't very clear.' ‘They are corpses,' said Dumbledore calmly. ‘Dead bodies that have been bewitched to do a Dark wizard's bidding. Inferi have not been seen for a long time, however, not since Voldemort was last powerful … he killed enough people to make an army of them, of course. This is the place, Harry, just here …'Q7 - Thoughts on Inferi?Harry's jaw dropped. Where a split second before there had been an armchair, there now crouched an enormously fat, bald old man who was massaging his lower belly and squinting up at Dumbledore with an aggrieved and watery eye. ‘There was no need to stick the wand in that hard,' he said gruffly, clambering to his feet. ‘It hurt.'He set the bottle back on the sideboard and sighed. It was then that his gaze fell upon Harry. ‘Oho,' he said, his large round eyes flying to Harry's forehead and the lightning-shaped scar it bore. ‘Oho!' ‘This,' said Dumbledore, moving forwards to make the introduction, ‘is Harry Potter. Harry, this is an old friend and colleague of mine, Horace Slughorn.'Q8 - What are your initial thoughts on Horace Slughorn? He shrugged and spread his hands wide, as though to say that age had its compensations, and Harry noticed a ring on his uninjured hand that he had never seen Dumbledore wear before: it was large, rather clumsily made of what looked like gold, and was set with a heavy black stone that had cracked down the middle. Slughorn's eyes lingered for a moment on the ring, too, and Harry saw a tiny frown momentarily crease his wide forehead.Q9 - What is this ring?‘Professor Umbridge ran afoul of our centaur herd,' said Dumbledore. ‘I think you, Horace, would have known better than to stride into the Forest and call a horde of angry centaurs “filthy half-breeds”.' ‘That's what she did, did she?' said Slughorn. ‘Idiotic woman. Never liked her.' Harry chuckled and both Dumbledore and Slughorn looked round at him. ‘Sorry,' Harry said hastily. ‘It's just – I didn't like her, either.'Dumbledore crossed the room. Once the door had closed behind him there was silence. After a few moments Slughorn got to his feet, but seemed uncertain what to do with himself. He shot a furtive look at Harry, then strode to the fire and turned his back on it, warming his wide behind.Q10 - How loud would Slughorn's apparate crack be?‘You look very like your father.' ‘Yeah, I've been told,' said Harry. Except for your eyes. You've got –' ‘My mother's eyes, yeah.' Harry had heard it so often he found it a bit wearing. ‘Humph. Yes, well. You shouldn't have favorites as a teacher, of course, but she was one of mine. Your mother,' Slughorn added, in answer to Harry's questioning look. ‘Lily Evans. One of the brightest I ever taught. Vivacious, you know. Charming girl. I used to tell her she ought to have been in my house. Very cheeky answers I used to get back, too.' ‘Which was your house?' ‘I was Head of Slytherin,' said Slughorn. ‘Oh, now,' he went on quickly, seeing the expression on Harry's face and wagging a stubby finger at him, ‘don't go holding that against me! Q11 - What do you think of Slughorn after these facts?‘I tell you all this,' Dumbledore continued, ‘not to turn you against Horace – or, as we must now call him, Professor Slughorn – but to put you on your guard. He will undoubtedly try to collect you, Harry. You would be the jewel of his collection: the Boy Who Lived … or, as they call you these days, the Chosen One.'Q12 - If Slughorn is like this, why does Dumbledore want him to teach at Hogwarts?‘I hope you will forgive me for mentioning it, Harry, but I am pleased and a little proud at how well you seem to be coping after everything that happened at the Ministry. Permit me to say that I think Sirius would have been proud of you.' Harry swallowed; his voice seemed to have deserted him. He did not think he could stand to discuss Sirius. It had been painful enough to hear Uncle Vernon say ‘His godfather's dead?'; even worse to hear Sirius's name thrown out casually by Slughorn. ‘It was cruel,' said Dumbledore softly, ‘that you and Sirius had such a short time together. A brutal ending to what should have been a long and happy relationship.' Harry nodded, his eyes fixed resolutely on the spider now climbing Dumbledore's hat. He could tell that Dumbledore understood, that he might even suspect that until his letter arrived Harry had spent nearly all his time at the Dursleys' lying on his bed, refusing meals and staring at the misted window, full of the chill emptiness that he had come to associate with Dementors. ‘It's just hard,' Harry said finally, in a low voice, ‘to realize he won't write to me again.'Harry said nothing, but Dumbledore did not seem to require an answer. He continued, ‘On a different, though related, subject, it is my wish that you take private lessons with me this year.' ‘Private – with you?' said Harry, surprised out of his preoccupied silence. ‘Yes. I think it is time that I took a greater hand in your education.' ‘What will you be teaching me, sir?' ‘Oh, a little of this, a little of that,' said Dumbledore airily.Q13 - What will Harry's private lessons be on?Q14 - Why does Dumbledore want Harry to carry around the invisibility cloak with him at all times?Chapter 5 - An Excess of PhlegmQ1 - Tonks seems really sad and out of it at the beginning of this chapter…why?‘What do you like me to call you when we're alone together?' Even by the dim light of the lantern Harry could tell that Mrs Weasley had turned bright red; he himself felt suddenly warm around the ears and neck, and hastily gulped soup, clattering his spoon as loudly as he could against the bowl. ‘Mollywobbles,' whispered a mortified Mrs Weasley into the crack at the edge of the door. ‘Correct,' said Mr Weasley. ‘Now you can let me in.'Q2 - What do you think of Mollywobbles?Mrs Weasley made a noise that sounded like ‘tchah!' ‘Mum hates her,' said Ginny quietly. ‘I do not hate her!' said Mrs Weasley in a cross whisper. ‘I just think they've hurried into this engagement, that's all!' ‘They've known each other a year,' said Ron, who looked oddly groggy and was staring at the closed door. ‘Well, that's not very long! I know why it's happened, of course.Q3 - What do you think of Fleur coming back into the story?‘Nobody knows what it said, though,' said Hermione quickly. ‘It got smashed.' ‘Although the Prophet says –' began Ron, but Hermione said, ‘Shh!' ‘The Prophet's got it right,' said Harry, looking up at them both with a great effort: Hermione seemed frightened and Ron amazed. ‘That glass ball that smashed wasn't the only record of the prophecy. I heard the whole thing in Dumbledore's office, he was the one the prophecy was made to, so he could tell me. From what it said,' Harry took a deep breath, ‘it looks like I'm the one who's got to finish off Voldemort … at least, it said neither of us could live while the other survives.' The three of them gazed at each other in silence for a moment.Q4 - What do you think of Harry telling Ron and Hermione the prophecy?Harry did not really listen. A warmth was spreading through him that had nothing to do with the sunlight; a tight obstruction in his chest seemed to be dissolving. He knew that Ron and Hermione were more shocked than they were letting on, but the mere fact that they were still there on either side of him, speaking bracing words of comfort, not shrinking from him as though he were contaminated or dangerous, was worth more than he could ever tell them.Q5 - Why do you think Harry is feeling this?Q6 - What do you think of Harry's OWL results?Q7 - Do you remember what you got on your SATs?Harry looked back down at his results. They were as good as he could have hoped for. He felt just one tiny twinge of regret … this was the end of his ambition to become an Auror. He had not secured the required Potions grade. He had known all along that he wouldn't, but he still felt a sinking in his stomach as he looked again at that small black ‘E'.Q8 - So Harry can't become an Auror, what career path will he go down now?

I am so excited to welcome my new friend, Herminia Esqueda to the pod. Herminia is a pastor, multicultural director, and an Equity, Diversity, Access and Inclusion Administrator in state government. She is an incredible communicator of the Gospel and reminds us of the important call to be a people of reconciliation and peacemaking.  So, in today's conversation, she encourages us to partner with God, and what God is already doing in our communities through being a consistent and present listener. So often we feel like we have to have ideas, strategies, and agendas — but God is inviting us to love our neighbors by being present. Today, I have chosen the color “Vivacious” from the Pantone guide book. It is a maroon color, and I chose it because of the name. Vivacious means to be full of life, and in order for us to live into the fullness of who God intended us to be, I believe that we need to cultivate rhythms of listening and learning, in order to love our neighbors. ----- Herminia Esqueda serves as the Multi-Cultural Ministries Coordinator for the Northwest District Church of the Nazarene, and is an Associate Pastor, alongside her Lead Pastor husband, at the Wapato Church of the Nazarene. In addition to her ministerial roles, Herminia works full-time as an Equity, Diversity, Access and Inclusion Administrator in state government. Herminia is pursuing her Master of Arts in Christian Ministry at Point Loma University, and serves as a founding member of the NOW Movement Network—a coordinated effort of Nazarenes in USA and Canada who are emboldened by the Spirit to pursue racial justice in our churches, communities, districts, and institutions now. She is a teacher, speaker and facilitator, and in her spare  time, she enjoys traveling to California to visit family, where she goes by “Lita,” short for abuelita. They're also part of the incredible Twitch channel, Lets Play Deathray, where they variety stream all sorts of awesome content, banter back and forth, and interact with their community in amazing ways. Definitely check that out, especially on a Sunday Community Night, where you'll catch them (and also sometimes me), playing Jackbox games, Gartic Phone, Minecraft, or any number of fun games. They stream every night except Friday and Saturday's around 7:30 PM MST. Jake is also a published author! That's huge! He wrote a segment in Bi-Visibility, which you can order here. No Super Producer Jared, from 'Feathers And Friends' and 'Parrot Gaming Productions', for the first part of this episode, but he comes in hot halfway through the Veruca Salt set and lends his unique outlook on the songs (aka, everything is sex.) This week the three of us each brought a separate artist, so we went with 5 songs apiece for: David's : Vampire Weekend Eric's: Veruca Salt Jake's: Violent Femmes Full playlist is here. Full Veruca Salt playlist here: The songs discussed, in order, are: Vampire Weekend – Oxford Comma Vampire Weekend – Diplomat's Son Vampire Weekend – Hannah Hunt Vampire Weekend – Sunflower (feat. Steve Lacy) Vampire Weekend – A-Punk Veruca Salt – Get Back Veruca Salt - Shutterbug Veruca Salt - Disconnected Veruca Salt – Damage Done Veruca Salt – Laughing In The Sugar Bowl Violent Femmes – Add It Up Violent Femmes - Promise Violent Femmes – Hallowed Ground Violent Femmes – No Killing Violent Femmes – I'm Not Gonna Cry We of course also play ‘Is It Aerosmith'. If you, or a loved one, is, or has been affected by sexual violence, please know that there are good people and organizations in the world that can offer help. RAINN is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. NSVRC(national sexual violence research center) has resources to help victims, and, importantly, tips on prevention and warning signs. If you have the means to donate, please do so. Every little bit helps.

Lux Radio Theatre, sometimes spelled Lux Radio Theater, a classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943–1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935–54), and NBC Radio (1954–55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand.
