Today we take a look back at one of our favorite Halloween movies, Hocus Pocus. Having been released 27 years ago, is it still a "must watch" during the holiday season compared to modern day special effects, newer films, and storylines? Is there a second movie in the works? Did Max actually lose a few years of his life? Why is there such an emphasis on virginity? These are just some of the questions we take a look at in our trip down memory lane. Join us for this spooky episode!! And don't forget to share your thoughts and theories with us on Instagram! @screenmaverickspodcast

26 years ago, Bette Midler took a break from her busy music schedule to put a spell on us in Disney's "Hocus Pocus", a family Halloween classic that'd been in development for almost a decade. The focus? The Sanderson Sisters, a group of wickedly funny witches. Decades later, Robert Eggers made his feature film debut with "The Witch" and won Sundance's Best Director prize. The focus of that film? Witches, and the conspiracies that surround them. This Hallows' Eve, we thought we'd pit the two movies against one another to see how they hold up. A massive thank you goes to Emma Thorpe, the composer and producer of all of our music. Don't forget to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and we look forward to seeing you all in two weeks! Welcome to Extra Credit, the spin-off show where we steer away from the usual magical curriculum and instead talk about something a little bit different. Episode 4 is all about that fondly remembered, magical, box office bomb from 1993, Disney's Hocus Pocus! How many times must the word 'virgin' be thrown around? Why are so many characters getting killed? Why is all of that happening in a Disney movie? If you enjoy us talking about something other than Sabrina then leave us a review on iTunes and maybe, just maybe we'll do more!! https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sabrina-the-teenage-watch/id1271890426?mt=2
Halloween month has drawn to a close, and Vicky, Nolan and Jill would be lying if they said it was an easy ride so far. But we can rest easy knowing it was all building to this week's episode. Eddie Murphy and Ray Bradbury may have let us down, but if there's one thing we know, it's that Bette Midler would be the wind beneath our wings, and bring We Want The D soaring to new, wonderful, spooky heights. The critics may disagree, but we know Disney's HOCUS POCUS ranks among their best live action ventures. How could it not, with three witches fully committed to playing their time displacement to the fullest, 90s bullies with amazing fashion sense and killer high-five skills, Jason (not James) Marsden dubbing over another actor AND a cat, and the incomparable Doug Jones as a two-timing zombie boyfriend? Happy Halloween, D Lovers!
