That is gained from mastering the skills and learning to follow. Ralph Rolle is a prime example of learning to follow becoming born to lead.Ralph followed his older brother in learning the drums, but that he led him to becoming a premier musician, who has created music with everyone from super producer Nile Rodgers and his iconic disco/R&B group Chic, pop legends Sting and Bono, the 1st woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Aretha Franklin, hip-hop giants Biggie Smalls and Queen Latifah, jazz superstar Chris Botti, the queen of Neo-Soul Erykah Badu, Vanessa Williams, soul crooner D'Angelo, songstylist India Arie, Lady Gaga, Dolly Pardon, Bono, Roger Daltry, John Legend, Joss Stone, Elvis Costello and playing in the resident band for N.B.C. ‘It's Showtime at The Apollo' for over 15 seasons. Ralph has also served as the musical director for syndicated “The Caroline Rhea Show” and he served in the same role for Japanese R&B/soul superstar Toshi Kubota.Ralph took the time, any time he had the time, to stop and cook and enjoy life. It helped him to come down from the tension and time on the road that was always in motion. Cooking, another gift he received from his mother, gave him the peace of mind he needed to slow down and breathe. And in learning his way around the kitchen, he started to bake. hat stayed with him and when he was hanging out with his musician friends, he would have his signature cookies. At first they laughed, but quickly the request became “please bring those cookies with you!”Over time, his cookies found their way into the hands of clients such as Westside Market, Franks Market, and many more. Good Morning America host chose Soul Snacks for her holiday gifting in 2011. In 2015, Bette Midler and Ralph met when Nile Rodgers and Chic were the guest artists and Ms. Midler's annual Hulaween Charity event. Ralph had his “cookie calling card” with him. Ms. Midler loved Soul Snacks so much that she placed orders for her family and friends. Soon, he was selling his cookies at Melba's, a legendary soul food restaurant in Harlem. The orders poured in and soon, he was featured in CNN, BET, ABC and FOX networks, in New York Times newspaper and in The Source and Vibe magazines. From there, Ralph gave birth to “SOUL SNACKS.”SOUL SNACKS offers a variety of delicious cookies such as Georgia Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Peanut Butter, Down Home Double Chocolate Chip, Ebony and Ivory Almond Cookie, Grampy's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie, French Cocoa Chocolate Chip, Miami Raisin Walnut, Chunked Up Chocolate Walnut, Cranberry Oatmeal Raisin, Joyful Gingerbread and the most recently added, but now #1 seller, Sweet Potato Cookies. “Inside of every cookie is years of heart, soul and lots of pride that has been the main ingredient of SOUL SNACKS Cookies for over a decade.”All Rights Reserved © 2025 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. It's available now from St. Martin's Press.
The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Another season of The Early Years of SNL comes to a close, which can only mean one thing… Buck is Back! Buck Henry returns for his 8th time hosting and this time he gets a proper season finale musical guest with the one and only Bette Midler.Saturday Night Live brings its highest-rated season yet to a close and while things are mostly upbeat, there is still a sense that this is somewhat of a goodbye. In what will end up being the final episode for Dan Aykroyd (unknowingly) and John Belushi (pretty evident) as cast members we see the final appearance of The Samurai, The Olympia Café closes its doors, and Richard Nixon makes one last appearance in the original era. On a brighter note, we get one of the most well-known cold opens of the era courtesy of Mr. Bill and an appearance by master impressionist Michael O'Donoghue! We're once again joined by Jon Schneider of The Saturday Night Network to reminisce about the joys of Buck hosting, argue about Garrett giving his best performance of all time, lament the final episode of two of the show's original stars, and teach Brad a thing or two about... well, nothing to do with SNL whatsoever. Robbie Rozelle is back for round two and I think it's safe to say that we are officially off the rails. After passing up lottery tickets to Hamilton at the Public in 2015, Robbie eventually saw it in previews and promptly had an out of body experience, prompting a StubHub debacle the very next day (remember those days?!). Robbie was the creative director of Playbill at the start and eventual astronomical height of Hamilton, so we take a look back on some of the insane fervor of that time and why some of it was probably not very cool (it's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me). Plus, we share stories about being in the room for some very famous on-stage mishaps: breaking the fourth wall in Wicked and Gypsy, a drunk Richard Burton furious that they gave him the curtain during Camelot, Bette Midler mugging with a purse in Hello Dolly!, and the famous Emily Skinner/Linda Eder situation for that one night only performance of Jekyll & Hyde. Episode 94 — Frank Pagano: From Glen Rock to the Broadway PitIn this must-hear episode of the Broadway Drumming 101 Podcast, I sit down with legendary drummer and percussionist Frank Pagano — a true veteran of both the concert stage and the Broadway scene.Frank's career reads like a who's who of the music industry. He's played with icons like Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, Al Green, and Phoebe Snow. On Broadway, his credits span from Leader of the Pack and The Who's Tommy to Smokey Joe's Cafe, Cry-Baby, The Pirate Queen, Good Vibrations, Fosse, Big River, Saturday Night Fever, and more. What you'll hear in this episode:* How a 4th-grade music demo sparked Frank's lifelong love of drums.* Growing up and gigging with the Vivino brothers (yes — that Jimmy Vivino).* What it was like studying percussion at Manhattan School of Music and later with Joe Morello and Justin DiCioccio.* His unusual path to Broadway — having a chair before ever subbing.* The real reason he pivoted to Broadway full-time: marriage, fatherhood, and health insurance.* Wisdom on subbing: play their show, not yours.* Lessons from playing percussion alongside killer drummers like Brian Brake.* Touring vs. pit life — the physical grind of the road versus the stability of Broadway.* How working with artists like Laura Nyro and Bruce Springsteen shaped his perspective on artistry and professionalism.* Advice for drummers who want to make it in New York: “Play with everyone. Play everything. Be early. Be likable. Be ready.”Frank's reflections on time, groove, and what it really means to be musical are some of the best insights I've heard on this show. This episode is for any drummer who wants to play on Broadway — and stay there.Watch more episodes on YouTubeListen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcastsLearn more about Frank Pagano: https://www.frankpagano.com/bioClayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. Hi everybody, I'm thrilled to do a deep dive with this week's guest—Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter extraordinaire, film composer, author, and actor IAN THOMAS.Ian's music has become part of the foundation of the Canadian musical landscape, a legacy recognized with a SOCAN National Achievement Award for Songwriting. He first made waves with his breakout hit “Painted Ladies,” in Canada and the US which then launched a string of chart-topping singles throughout the 1970s and 80s. His success continued with his acclaimed band, The Boomers, which featured Peter Cardinali on Bass, Rick Gratton on Drums and Bill Dillon on Guitars. Releasing 4 albums in total the Boomers via early Major success in Germany, gained a significant following in Europe.Whether performed by Ian himself or covered by renowned artists such as Santana, Chicago, Manfred Mann, America, Bon Jovi, and Bette Midler, his songs—“Pilot,” “Hold On,” “Right Before Your Eyes,” “Coming Home,” “You Gotta Know,” and “Come the Sun,” among others—continue to receive heavy rotation on radio stations across Canada and around the world. In addition to his solo career, Ian has been a core member of the beloved Canadian ensemble Lunch at Allen's, alongside Marc Jordan, Cindy Church, and Murray McLauchlan, for over 25 years. He is also the author of two books: Bequest (2006), a Canadian bestseller, and The Lost Chord (2008), both published by Manor House Publishing. Most recently, Ian released a new album titled Roll with it and he completed a SOLD OUT theatre tour across Canada. On a personal level - one of my fave albums in my collection is his orchestral Life of Song album recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. It contains absolutely ingenious arrangements of his hit songs. I absolutely loved chatting about Ian's entire illustrious career and about what Ian listens to for enjoyment himself. Our chat took place in the cozy confines of his beautiful home studio. There were laughs aplenty, and our discussion began with me accidentally knocking my full coffee cup off the table, narrowly missing spilling it all onto some of his valuable recording gear lol.Enjoy! Singer Erin Schwab has been singing to the accompaniments of pianist Jay Fuchs for a long time. Their performances are audience engaging with requests and a lot of dialog back and forth. But for many in the audience what really makes the show are the treatments of Judy Garland and Bette Midler songs. Erin and Jay told how the show came into being when they talked to Phil Nusbaum.
Toby Scott...Man what a talented catAs a teenager admiring rock bands and the idea of music as a career, Toby wantedto be part of the action. He was able to get into several recording studiosearly on and started recording at home. SubsequentlyToby moved to New York City as his homebase and another tour and liverecording. In 1987 Bruce had him set upa studio at his house in New Jersey with enough equipment to cover everythingthey needed. That turned into the TunnelOf Love album, which was basically Bruce playing all instruments, Tobyrecording and programming drum patterns with no other participants. This collaboration and process continued onsuccessfully for another 20 years. During that time Toby was continuing to workwith other clients and occasionally at his home in Whitefish Montana. Show Notes Episode 491: You Want A NEW Drug? Part 1 of the Crack Epidemic This week Host Dave Bledsoe found himself unexpectedly in a serious situation when we staggered into an Irish wake and had to pretend he was cousin Eamon from Cork. (He was quickly figured out because his fake Irish accent kept sounding more Jamaican.) On the show this week we unexpectedly found ourselves tackling a topic way more serious than this dumb show should be allowed, the Crack Epidemic. Along the way we discover that Dave was a tattle tale growing up and then dive right into the backstory of crime in the 70s, 80's and 90s. (This is where everything started going wrong.) Then we learn how someone (could be kids from Barbados could be kids from Berkeley, or the CIA) learned how to make crack from stuff in your cleaning cabinet. We take a look at the economic and social conditions that made the crack trade so popular in the inner city. (This is where shit got real) before laying out crack's real top customers. (White people, surprise!) Then we look at the impact of crack on the communities that sold it. That is when the show became a two-parter.
In today’s devotional, Alexis A. Goring reminds us of a powerful, comforting truth: God is not a distant observer, watching humanity from afar. Instead, Scripture promises He is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18 NIV). Using the classic song “From a Distance” as a launching point, Alexis explores the misconception that God simply set the world in motion and then stepped away. This worldview, known as Deism, paints God as a cosmic clockmaker who lets creation run on its own. But the Bible tells a different story — one of a God who is deeply involved in the details of our lives. From the mountaintop moments to the darkest valleys, God walks with us, comforts us, and intervenes in ways both miraculous and tender. He hasn’t abandoned His creation, and He certainly hasn’t abandoned you. His presence is a steady promise we can cling to in every season. Today’s Key Scripture:“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 NIV Join the Conversation:When was a time you felt God’s presence in a powerful, undeniable way? How do you remind yourself that He is near in difficult seasons? We’d love to hear your story — connect with us on social media @LifeAudioNetwork or send us a message. Let’s uplift one another with stories of God’s faithful presence!
Exactly one year after his historic comeback in the seminal Pulp Fiction (which he received an Oscar nomination for), John Travolta followed it up with this slick and crime caper/satire adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name. Here he plays Chili Palmer, a mob enforcer from Miami who LOVES movies, is visiting Los Angeles for the first time, and finds himself very eager to get into the movie business. Once there, he meets a schlock producer (Gene Hackman - RIP), a scream queen (Rene Russo), a pretentious movie star (Danny DeVito), and a menacing wanna-be producer (Delroy Lindo)....among several others. And wouldn't you know it....Chili finds himself getting involved in the movie business. :) Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family, Men In Black), this would go on to be on of the more quotable and fondly remembered crime comedies of the '90's featuring a cast including several other legends including Bette Midler, the late great Dennis Farina, and the late, great James Gandolfini. Dennis is joined via Zoom by writer for Part 2 of their conversation about Paul's new novel What Is Wrong With You? as well as his previous novel Farrell Covington and the Limits of Style, both of which offer readers sides of Rudnick they haven't seen before. In Part 2, Paul talks about the raw rage and freedom he felt while writing Farrell alone in a room during the pandemic, the lost gay Koch brother who loosely inspired the book and his early 20's club days in NYC, dancing the night away at Studio 54 and Paradise Garage, both of which are featured in Farrell. He also talks about why enjoys posting on Twitter, the post he wrote that went the most viral and why he can't resist cracking wise about MAGA gals Lara Trump, MTG, Kari Lake and Kristi Noem. He also recalls making Coastal Elites for HBO during lookdown with actors like Bette Midler and Sarah Paulson performing over Zoom in their own homes. Other topics include: the odd jobs he worked when he first came to NYC, how he's kept going through all of the ups and downs of a creative career, making deals with God to get laughs from the audience during his early playwrighting days and how his premier magazine alter ego Libby Gelman-Waxner once fielded a sincere marriage proposal from a besotted reader. Are you back in high school? Have your pants disappeared? Yes, you are in the middle of a nightmare... Lucky you. Waking nightmares are much more frustrating. At least we have David Waldman on KITM to explain some of the horrors befalling us. Bette Midler refused to dance with Donald K. Trump at Studio 54. That was the moment Donald's mind ceased to function, trapping him forever in the early 80's. Now, we are trapped with him. So, who's to blame for the Trump Tariffs? Uhm… Elon Musk? No, probably not. How about Peter Navarro? Maybe it's Howard Lutnick? Or could it be JD Vance's fault for these Trump Tariffs? No one has figured out who is responsible for the Trump Tariffs, but there will be a $100 million, 4-mile-long parade to honor Generalissimo K. Trump on his birthday. Meanwhile, Gops will raise the debt limit to $5 trillion, and cut taxes by $5 trillion, because at this point, why not? Blue states can officially drop dead. For those who care about an excuse for SignalFiascoGate, here's one. Complaints and suggestions are always welcome, just remember to fill out your name and address legibly for a quick response! Judges in Texas are standing by to habeas your corpus onto C-17s, ASAP.
It's always interesting to find out that public figures can be as obsessed with fly fishing as we are. People like Harrison Ford, Jeff Daniels, Tucker Carlson, Bette Midler, Jimmy Kimmel, and Dick Cheney are all serious fly fishers. (And no, I don't have any of them on tap for my podcast). But Rahm Emanuel [37:25] is a dedicated listener to this podcast, and when I had a chance to interview him I took it. There is no politics in this podcast interview—just a fanatic fly fisher who talks about why he loves it, how he finds time in his busy life to go fly fishing, and what excites him the most about it. This was a lively and fun interview with a fair amount of good-natured ribbing. In the Fly Box this week I have no voice files to play (hint, hint) but lots of great e-mails with interesting questions and a few tips from listeners, including: A listener looks for advice on how to carry his fishing gear on a plane. How do I fish plunge pools? Why don't I catch anything in the deep spot below the waterfall? What rods do I need for fishing both small streams in Smoky Mountain streams and steelhead fishing in Ohio? A listener gives advice on the Orvis Dropper Rig Fly Box and why you need to check local regulations before you use a 3-fly rig. A listener relates a story of his great customer service experience Why did trout smash my size 20 dry fly but not connect? Will smallmouth bass and rainbow trout hold in the same water? What knots do you recommend for different presentations and why? What is the best way to get my fly under the mangroves without hanging up?

When Norma Kamali studied fashion illustration in the 1960s, she never expected to become a designer. So when a job as an airline clerk came along, she was glad to accept it—along with the perk of dirt-cheap flights from New York to London. On those weekend trips abroad, she discovered fashion that was exuberant and eye-catching, so she started loading her suitcase with clothing to sell in the U.S. By the 1970s, she was designing her own pieces out of a shop in New York; soon she was selling them to celebrities like Cher and Bette Midler. Today, after more than 50 years in the fashion industry, Norma Kamali is known for iconic designs like the sleeping bag coat, and the bold red bathing suit popularized by Farah Fawcett. This episode was produced by J.C. Howard with music composed by Ramtin Arablouei.
