While prepping for our March return to Walt Disney World, I studied everything that I could find with hopes of mastering this service.… Read more... The post 170. Travel Gluten Free Podcast Episode 96 COVID Disney Travel Update, Star Wars Galaxy Edge and Gluten Free Disney DisneyWorld - Perhaps the Safest Place in Florida during the COVID Pandemic In this episode, I chat about Disney Star Wars experience, the new COVID restrictions at Disney theme parks, Disney apps you can use to enhance your Disney experience, and the level of service Disney offers to those of us who are gluten-free or have specialty diets. Amidst the most significant COVID numbers yet seen, with over 15,000 cases in one day last week, the state of Florida alone has recorded more COVID cases than other countries! Even though it's tempting to go and actually get a seat on Rise of the Resistance, those epidemic numbers are way too high for me to be comfortable to fly to Florida. I will say that with all the sanitization, social distancing, and touchless services Disney has in place, a Disney theme park is most likely the place you'd be least likely to catch COVID in Florida. I'm a Disney fan by default, as when they purchased Star Wars, I became a Disney fan only because I love Star Wars. When I lived in Florida, I was a short 45-minute drive away from DisneyWorld. Our family would often go to DisneyWorld on the resident pass, which, 15 years ago, was only $99. Of course, there were blackout dates, but honestly, I wouldn't want to go during the holidays that were blacked out anyway as it would be super packed with people, and that's just not enjoyable for me. Creating a Disney Account Online If you're planning on going to Disney, you'll first want to open a Disney account for yourself online https://disneyworld.disney.go.com Next, create an account for each person in your party, then link people who are traveling with you. If someone in your travel group already has an account, do not create another account for them. Simply email them an invitation to join your group! Create all your plans on your Disney account and make plans for the people in your party! Reserve Fastpass up to 30 days ahead of time. Now, you can create dinner reservations, reserve FastPasses, buy merchandise, and book your Disney stay all from one place! Get FastPasses for your entire group, or make dinner reservations for each individual person. If you want to divide your group into two - no problem! You can put only individuals that want to go on a ride or to a restaurant on that reservation. Additionally, you can change your reservation online 24 hours ahead of time on the app or on your desktop. Of course, Disney makes it super easy to separate you from your money, it's what they are good at. Using the Disney App to Enhance Your Vacation Experience Next, download the My Disney Experience app to view all your park plans including hotel, dinner reservations, order meals ahead of time, access PhotoPass service, view park maps, see wait lines at different rides, find character greetings, view showtimes, access FastPass reservations created with your Disney account. When waiting in line, I recommend downloading the Disney Play app to your phone. Log in to your account and play a game that is based on your location in the park! Most games are two players, so you’ll need a person in your group to play with on the app. FastPass and FastPass Plus at Disney Fastpass can be reserved up to 30 days in advance and gives you a shorter line to wait in when at any of the parks. Fastpass + charges a fee and puts you at the front of the line. With COVID modifications, Fastpass + isn’t available right now as they are using social distancing with wait lines, and they are using the FastPass+ space for their regular line queue. Note: You can get three FP for one park per day. From the Disney website: “Follow these quick steps and you’ll be riding the fast lane to fun in no time: Add people to your Family & Friends list to enable you to reserve access to FastPass+ attractions and entertainment for them. Link your vacation package, link your tickets or link your annual pass to your Disney account. If you purchased online, the package, tickets or passes may have been linked automatically. Reserve access to FastPass+ attractions and entertainment for each day that you have a valid theme park ticket linked to your Disney account. Visit the theme park on the day that you have FastPass+ selections. Go to the FastPass+ entrance or viewing area for the selected attraction or show during the designated arrival window time.” “After you redeem your initial 3 selections, use the app or head to a kiosk to make another selection—even if you’re in a different park from your first choices! Valid theme park admission is required. FastPass+ attractions and entertainment experiences, the number of selections you can make, and available arrival windows are limited. Making advance FastPass+ selections requires online registration.” Disney’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge The ultimate Star Wars experience for any fan, if you were going to do one thing at Disney, this would be it! Packed full of fun and exciting rides, gift shops, and dining experiences (if you’re not gluten-free), the Star Wars experience will blow your mind! Listen in to find out more details about why this experience is so amazing. Oscar from The Peaceful Thrillseekers podcast agrees with me about the high level of coolness that the Disney team has put together for Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. “The thing that makes it so spectacular is the cast members. I think the cast members have done an amazing job with Galaxy’s Edge. I think that if it weren’t for them, the experience wouldn’t be as special as it is.” Listen in to more of Oscar’s review on Episode #95 Disney Know Before You Go COVID Travel Update First, you must reserve your time at any one of the four Disney theme parks that are currently open through the Disney Park Pass Reservation System. “To enter a park, both a park reservation and valid admission for the same park on the same date are required for each person in your party ages three and up (limit one park per day Disney is controlling the number of people in the park to maintain social distancing).” FastPass+ service is suspended as they are using additional queue space to control capacity and maintain physical distancing. We will automatically cancel existing FastPass+ selections and share any future updates on the service at a later date. There are selected resorts Disney has opened to guests. Disney Springs shopping opened in June. Remember that COVID is changing Disney’s offerings, so make sure to check their website for more information. Make sure to view Disney’s new COVID precautions page before you make reservations to the park. Here is a summary of precautions Disney is taking to keep everyone safe: Mandatory use of face masks Sanitizing rides Seating guests six feet apart Hand washing stations located throughout the park Physical and social distancing Modified experiences Temperature screenings are mandated at areas throughout the park Disney’s disclaimer: “An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, senior citizens and Guests with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable.” Journey with Travel Gluten Free Grab the Guide to Traveling Gluten Free Get the BEST all-natural gluten-free travel cosmetics at Lemongrass Spa! http://www.attractionchecklist.com - One of the most popular shows at Disney's Animal Kingdom, heck in just about any Disney park, is Festival of the Lion King. In this episode, I head to the Harambe Theatre to check it out! Recorded on March 21, 2019. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode I head out to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World to see the long running show Festival of the Lion King. Located in the Africa section of the park, Festival Of The Lion King is described in the guide map by saying: Come inside and experience the pageantry and puppetry of this big as Broadway show. There are no height requirements for this attraction and FastPass Plus is available. Before we head to the Harambe Theatre to see the show, here are five fast facts about Festival of the Lion King. 1. Festival of the Lion King debuted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on April 22, 1998. 2. The show opened in a theater in the Camp Minnie-Mickey area of the park but in 2014, the show took a hiatus as a new theater was built. The former location in Camp Minnie-Mickey was replaced with Pandora - The world of Avatar. 3. Many of the floats in the show are repurposed from Disneyland’s Lion King Celebration parade that ran from 1994 to 1997. 4. Festival of the Lion King features a cast of 50 performers who require over 130 costumes! 5. In March of 2016, a small fire broke out in the elephant float during the show. Guests were evacuated and the fire was quickly put out with no injuries and not much damage reported. Now let’s enjoy Festival of the Lion King. After the show I’ll give you my thoughts on this attraction and, as always, this is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now! Many organizations talk about improving customer experience as one of their primary innovation initiatives. But what does it look like to create a truly transformative experience that is orders of magnitude better than anything else out there, and to do so at scale? My guest today is John Padgett. John is the Chief Experience and Innovation Officer at the Carnival Corporation, and his team has created arguably the most complex and successful implementation of an IoT driven guest experience platform in the world with the Ocean Medallion. Carnival was named one of the most innovative companies in the world by Fast Company due to the work John and his team have done.He was also one of the masterminds behind the Disney MagicBand and FastPass Plus experiences, which completely transformed the way guests experience The Walt Disney World resort. In this episode we dig into how John thinks about creating the vision for such massive undertakings and the tools he's used to successfully drive disruptive innovation. It is time to head to Walt Disney World and experience the recently updated, Pirates of the Caribbean. Located in Adventureland in Magic Kingdom, the guide map describes this attraction in the following manner: Embark on a voyage to a time when pirates ruled the sea. The thrill lever describes the ride as being slow, dark and having small drops. There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and FastPass Plus is available. Now, before we set sail, here are five fast facts about Pirates of the Caribbean at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. 1. Pirates of the Caribbean opened at Magic Kingdom on December 16, 1973. 2. The attraction features a whopping 126 animatronic figures and 69 of them are pirates. The flume for the attraction contains around three quarter of a million gallons of water that cycles through at about 18,000gallons per minute. 3. The attraction’s theme song "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" was written by George Bruns and X. Atencio. 4. Over the years several changes to some of the themes in the attraction have been tweaked to stay current with the sensibilities of the time but the biggest change to the attraction came in 2006 when elements from the films the attraction inspired were added to the attraction in the form of a new overall storyline featuring Johnny Depp’s character from the films, Captain Jack Sparrow. 5. In March of 2018, the attraction reopened from a refurbishment with even more changes and the ‘Bride Auction’ scene now featured the pirates selling off goods from the village and the iconic Redhead in the scene is now a pirate herself, who helps keep the rowdy pirates in line. The audio for today’s episode was recorded just a few days after that reopening. Let’s now waste any more time, let’s experience Magic Kingdom’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Annie and Dan return after Dan's trip to Walt Disney World and break down the trip, day by day. Of course, because they're both wordy as all get-out, they only get through the first two days of the trip, starting with Day one at Disney's Animal Kingdom, and dinner at Boma, and finishing with Day two at Epcot, and dinner at Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs. Among other digressions, Dan discusses his theory that Fastpass Plus is increasing wait times overall, Frozen's quality as a ride, and some of the new Pandora attractions.
Annie and Dan return and discuss all kinds of non-Disney topics this week, including Dan enjoying feeling smug, fooling his dogs, and more of Dan's break-down of Harry Potter. They also talk about Annie's dislike for Newsies, and her trip to the Dentist. The Harry Potter discussion this time focuses mostly on Wizard Bachelors and the insane behavior of Dolores Umbridge. They spend a few minutes talking about the movie Logan Lucky, which they both saw this week. For those of you who want to avoid spoilers, that's minute 42:12 to minute 52:00. Lastly they talk about Dan's issues with the current Fastpass Plus bias toward the East Coast, and how unfair it is for him and his white privilege that he had to wake up early.

The videos seen in the attraction’s pre-show have different variations.
