Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Bethlehem exists in duality: both as a real city and an imaginary notion in the minds of so many throughout different locations and cultures across the world. Those people who actually set foot there can be present for all number of reasons, but the thing that stood out to me from the field recording was its normality - the honk of the car horns, children's voices … but above all, the sound of commerce taking place. The goods on sale may vary in bazaars around the world, but this is a place like any other, where humans come together to exchange all manner of things - and that includes Sami's special tea.  "I approached the composition from the position of wanting the sound of the city to infuse the feel of the track. I used a range of traditional instrumentation from the general region, but used a musical language that I'm more familiar with. In the alleyways, the sound would be more all-encompassing and reverberant. I found a clip of a boy speaking which sounded very like he was saying “Wake Up”. So that underpinned the structure of the track itself - since it seemed to me to be the best comment on the topic of migration that continually rises in public debate. We're all human. And every man, woman and child has an equal right to exist." Wake up...  Bethlehem alley recording reimagined by Dug Campbell. I've been wanting to do an overview of the SAFE Network for some time, as a sort of new introduction, an update on where the project has currently gotten to, and a view of what's ahead. Dug Campbell from MaidSafe helps me try to accomplish this, because I found it really hard to do by myself! Dug has gained a lot of experience talking about the SAFE Network with a wide variety of different people in varying circumstances. He also, being based there in MaidSafe headquarters, has continual access to the heart of the team. I hope a broad variety of listeners will find this episode interesting and useful, from those with little tech experience, to developers. MaidSafe - An Interview with Dug Campbell

Episode 3: An Interview with Dug Campbell From MaidSafe In this episode of the Crypto Quest podcast we catch up with Dug Campbell, Head of Marketing & Outreach at Maidsafe to talk about their project that is reimagining the very fabric of the internet itself. MaidSafe has the very ambitious yet very clear aim of building a new and improved version of the internet called the SAFE Network. Their view, held by many others around the world, is that the internet is fundamentally broken. In an increasingly connected world the current internet infrastructure does little to ensure the privacy and data security of it’s users and its design lends itself to the consolidation of huge information power brokers like Google, Amazon and Facebook. The societal implications this has for the world are becoming clearer each day with evidence suggesting that this wide scale collection and processing of data can unfairly influence elections, compromise our personal privacy and encroach on basic freedoms. MaidSafe seeks to address these issues directly with the creation of the SAFE Network – the world’s first autonomous and decentralised data network that claims to offer data security and complete privacy to its users by adhering to these principles from the very base level of its design. In the interview Dug helps us understand the problems and inequalities that the current internet infrastructure causes and talks us through how the systems MaidSafe are developing will mitigate these issues on their own network. In this episode we explore: The problems current internet infrastructure poses its users. How the SAFE network works. The role that vaults and clients play on the network. The SAFE Browser. Why Blockchain isn’t and can’t be the solution that powers the SAFE Network. MAIDSAFE’s consensus algorithm PARSEC. The relationship between MAIDsafecoin, launched in 2014 and SAFEcoin, the currency native to the SAFE Network. The Maidsafe road map and what to expect next. Disclaimer: I was not paid to promote Maidsafe and I do not currently own any Maidsafecoin. I undertook this interview as in my opinion MAIDSAFE are developing some extremely interesting technology with a real use case. The team have been working diligently on this since 2006, long before Bitcoin was launched and have not wavered from their course. Definitely a project worth keeping an eye on.   Resources   Maidsafe Website: https://maidsafe.net/ Twitter: @Maidsafe   Dug Campbell Twitter: @DugCampbell Linkedin: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/dugcampbell   More information Safe Network Forum : https://safenetforum.org/ MaidSafe Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChDck5R_C9i6XTrS66tbwOw SAFE Network Primer: https://www.safenetworkprimer.com/ MaidSafe on Medium: https://medium.com/@maidsafe Introduction to PARSEC consensus algo: https://medium.com/safenetwork/parsec-a-paradigm-shift-for-asynchronous-and-permissionless-consensus-e312d721f9d8   Thanks & Recognition Luis Decasas - For exceptional audio production and support. In late May, MaidSafe released the whitepaper for PARSEC (Protocol for Asynchronous, Reliable, Secure and Efficient Consensus). This week MaidSafe published the open source code for implementing PARSEC so that it can be used by any other projects which would find it suits their needs. This episode, we talk to Bartłomiej Kamiński, a developer who works on the MaidSafe team in the Routing section, and a co-author of the whitepaper. We cover a lot of relevant concepts that should allow most anyone to get a deeper idea of how PARSEC works and how the SAFE Network uses it--without putting developers to sleep, either! We also talk some about how other projects may find PARSEC useful and wish to use and contribute to it. #### Music Music for this episode: *Safe Crossroads Beta*, an original piece composed and performed by Nicholas Koteskey of Two Faced Heroes #### Links Medium article about the PARSEC code release, with link to a GREAT youtube video by Dug Campbell  Safenet forum thread on the Release PARSEC explainer video Medium article about SAFE and PARSEC MaidSafe Dev Update release of PARSEC PARSEC whitepaper PARSEC github RFC MaidSafe Links to all things SAFE SAFE Crossroads subscription links

Bitcoin is one of a new breed of so-called “crypto-currencies” which only exist online. Fans say they provide low-cost secure money transfer without the need for bank accounts, critics say they’re used by criminals and tax evaders. Bitcoin uses a technology called “Blockchain” and, like the Internet in 1990, only a few people have heard of it and, like the Internet in 1990, it is probably on a trajectory to change the world. In this talk Dug Campbell will introduce us to Bitcoin and discuss the story so far in the real world. Dug Campbell runs the Scottish Bitcoin Meetup and founded the Scottish Bitcoin Conference. He regularly speaks at events and provides press commentary around the disruptive potential of crypto-currencies, in addition to exploring how blockchain technologies will change society over the next few years. After over a decade as a technology lawyer, he completed an MBA before becoming a Digital Strategy Consultant. He also blogs regularly at www.dugcampbell.com.
