Alignment Beats Talent | The People Advantage (Series Finale)

In Episode 205, Phil and Paul wrap up Season 14's The People Advantage series with Episode 10—the finale. Ten episodes in, they bring it all together around one core idea: alignment beats talent, every single time. Equal talent, or even a talent disadvantage, doesn't matter if your team is aligned and the other one isn't. What happens off the field always shows up on it. And since everyone stops playing the sport eventually, the real question is what lessons are actually being built into the people playing it. Phil and Paul close out the series with stories from turning around losing programs, why "safe to serve" beats "scared to survive," and why the bench matters just as much as the starting eleven. ⸻ Specifically, they discuss: Alignment Beats Talent  A program with a baseline of talent but total belief in each other can outperform teams with far more talent and no cohesion. Culture built early in a rebuild is what makes the difference years later. People First, Players Second  Identity can't be wrapped up in being a player—because coaches who only coach the player miss the person. Teams that are aligned on coaching the whole person get better performance as a byproduct. Safe to Serve, Not Scared to Survive  A team full of people who know their identity plays free instead of tense. When everyone is serving each other instead of protecting themselves, nobody is playing out of position or holding back. Role Clarity Creates Buy-In—Even on the Bench  Bench players may not like their role, but clear communication about what that role requires—and what it takes to change it—creates real buy-in instead of resentment. From Rivalry to Advocacy  A story about two teammates—one starting, one on the bench—who built a real relationship once the bench player learned what the starter was quietly struggling with. Vulnerability turned a rivalry into genuine support. Culture of Vulnerability  None of this works without walls coming down first. A team that creates space for people to be known—not just to perform—builds relationships that make everyone better. Talent Doesn't Equal Alignment  Even the most talented teams can implode without alignment. Talent gets you attention; alignment gets you results. ⸻ Key Takeaway Team alignment will beat talent every single time. It's built through people-first coaching, role clarity for every player (not just the starters), and a culture where vulnerability and service replace fear and self-protection. The lessons carry far beyond the field—these are the same things that make someone a better parent, spouse, coach, and leader long after the game is over. ⸻ This wraps Season 14's The People Advantage series. If it's resonated with you, go back through the full series with your coaching staff, your team, or your family—and share how it's shown up in your own leadership. Phil and Paul want to hear it, and it'll help shape what comes next. You can also connect with Phil through Darke Leadership Group to learn how DISC training, team alignment, and communication strategies help organizations build the kind of culture that outperforms talent alone. For thin horses, the focus is high-quality forage and balanced fat-and-fiber nutrition; for overweight horses, it is carefully managed forage and a ration balancer. A soundscene of an island. Asleep. Between the tides. This passage of time is from a 2025 recording the Lento box made in Bigbury-on-Sea, tied to a palm tree facing onto the beach and out towards the island. It's the dead of night, 2am to 3am. The waves are breaking along the soft sandy beach. The tide has turned. Now it is rising. Weather conditions mild. Wind speeds very light, 1 to 2 knots. Human activity virtually nil for tens of miles, in all directions, including the entire dome of the night sky. * What makes this overnight sound photograph of the beach by Burgh Island so precious to us is the crystal clarity of the waves and their movement as they break on the flat sands, under a silent night sky. Being the dead of night and completely dark herring gulls and oyster catchers are still occasionally audible, but their calls are relatively sparse and there are long empty gaps. ** You can listen to other sections of this overnight recording in episode 265 and episode 295.

I bring it to the desolate and lonely and afraid. I give Your peace to those who suffer pain, or grieve for loss, or think they are bereft of hope and happiness. Send them to me, my Father. Let me bring Your peace with me. For I would save Your Son, as is Your Will, that I may come to recognize my Self. And so we go in peace. To all the world we give the message that we have received. And thus we come to hear the Voice for God, Who speaks to us as we relate His Word; Whose Love we recognize because we share the Word that He has given unto us.- Jesus Christ in ACIM

Kim returns to a familiar theme, the opportunity fund, but goes deeper this time into why most people's cash reserves are quietly losing ground every year. Because typical savings and money market accounts are taxed annually, an opportunity fund can lose real value over the decades most people hold one, sometimes 80 years or more. Kim makes the case that whole life insurance is one of the most efficient places to store that liquidity, since it grows without annual taxation and remains borrowable at a moment's notice. The conversation also turns personal. Kim and Spencer debate whether people overestimate the risk of action or underestimate the risk of inaction, and Kim shares two real stories from her 30 years in the industry, one involving a medical event that disqualified someone from coverage, and another about a business owner who passed away without life insurance in place, leaving his family in real financial hardship. It's a candid look at why life insurance is designed to be used during life, not just after it. [00:01:00 - 00:01:30] Kim jokes about rebranding as the Guaranteed Girls before explaining why she chose the name Prosperity Thinkers instead. [00:01:30 - 00:02:00] Kim says having protections in place makes it far easier to know when to plan and when to move. [00:02:00 - 00:02:30] Kim distinguishes between the time for planning and the time the trigger has to be pulled, one way or another. [00:02:30 - 00:03:00] Kim explains that most financial advisors never ask clients about their opportunity fund at all. [00:03:00 - 00:04:00] Kim reveals that a typical opportunity fund is taxed every single year, quietly eroding its value over time. [00:04:00 - 00:05:00] Kim explains why whole life insurance lets you borrow against cash value immediately, without taxing its growth. [00:05:00 - 00:05:20] Kim points out a typical opportunity fund could exist for roughly 80 years, taxed the entire time, without this strategy. [00:06:00 - 00:07:00] Spencer asks whether people overestimate the risk of action and underestimate the risk of inaction. [00:07:00 - 00:08:00] Kim shares a story about a client whose medical event disqualified them from purchasing life insurance. [00:08:00 - 00:09:00] Kim shares the story of a business owner who passed away without life insurance, leaving his family in financial difficulty. [00:08:40 - 00:09:00] Kim references roughly 6,000 people dying every day between ages 40 and 60. [00:09:00 - 00:10:00] Kim reminds listeners that life insurance is meant to be utilized during life, not just after death. [00:10:00 - 00:11:00] Spencer closes the episode and invites listener questions for Kim.

Send us a messageEpisode 232: How to Help Your Adult Child Feel Heard and Emotionally Safe: Helpful Therapy Words, part 2Your adult child may be telling you they don't feel heard, understood, or emotionally safe with you. And if you're a parent who genuinely loves your child and wants a close relationship, those words can be painful and confusing. You may be thinking, I am listening. I do care. Why doesn't my child see that?In Part 2 of Therapy Words That Can Actually Help, we're talking about three relationship skills that can change the way difficult conversations with your adult child feel: curiosity, attunement, and emotional safety. These words are not about agreeing with everything your adult child says or taking responsibility for every feeling they have. They are about learning how to understand your child's experience before trying to explain, correct, defend, or solve it.When an adult child feels misunderstood, criticized, dismissed, or pressured, they may begin sharing less. Over time, difficult conversations can become something both parent and adult child avoid. Curiosity, attunement, and emotional safety give you a different way to approach those moments and can help create the conditions for more honest communication and stronger connection. In this episode, you'll learn:How curiosity can improve communication with your adult child by replacing defensiveness, assumptions, and problem-solving with a genuine desire to understand what they are experiencing. What attunement means in a parent-adult child relationship and why listening to the emotion underneath your child's words can sometimes matter more than finding the perfect response. What emotional safety actually looks like between a parent and an adult child, especially when you disagree about choices, beliefs, relationships, or painful events from the past. Why making your adult child feel heard does not require you to agree with them, accept their interpretation as the only truth, or abandon your own perspective. How to have difficult conversations with your adult child without immediately defending yourself, explaining your intentions, or trying to fix the problem, so there is more room for understanding and connection. In Part 1 of this series, we talked about differentiation and acceptance: staying grounded in yourself while accepting what is actually happening in the relationship. Those skills create the foundation for what comes next. Curiosity, attunement, and emotional safety are about what happens when you turn toward your adult child and try to understand their experience. You do not have to say everything perfectly for your adult child to feel more comfortable talking with you. Often, the biggest shift begins when they sense that you are trying to understand them instead of preparing to defend yourself. And that can change the entire direction of a conversation. In Part 3, we'll take the next step and talk about repair and accountability, especially when there has already been hurt or conflict in the parent-adult child relationship. If you know another parent who is struggling in their relationship with an adult child, share this episode with them. They may need to hear it too.Click Here to download the free guide: 5 Steps to Take Before Trying to Repair the Relationship with Your Adult Child Tina Gosney is the Family Conflict Coach. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

In 2020, 16-year-old Antonio Mays Jr. traveled to Seattle's Capitol Hill Occupied Protest zone, a several block encampment that demonstrators declared to be a police-free area. But one night, Mays was shot to death in a stolen Jeep while protestors and journalists livestreamed the aftermath. Protestors said the group's internal security forces shot in self-defense, while video shows someone approaching the stopped Jeep and firing at close range. The conflicting narratives have muddied the truth about that night, and Mays's shooter remains unidentified. From NPR's “Embedded,” KUOW, and The Seattle Times comes the podcast “We Keep Us Safe.” A team of reporters sifts through the video and re-interview witnesses to explore why a teen was killed and another left with brain damage. The team uncovers new evidence, identifies potential suspects in the shooting of Antonio Mays Jr, and asks why justice at a justice-reform demonstration remains elusive. Breaking The Silence with Dr Gregory Williams Anniversary Special Seven Years of Breaking Silence: A Roadmap from Survival to Hope Summary Seven Years on the Air Dr. Gregory Williams marks the program's seventh anniversary after a scheduled guest is hospitalized and the planned suicide-awareness discussion is postponed. He reflects on entering the eighth year of broadcasting, thanks the BBS Radio TV team and the audience, and describes the show's expansion from audio-only programming to video and broad platform distribution. He also celebrates listeners in Australia and invites callers and viewers to share their favorite episodes. Memorable Guests and a Listening Platform The host recalls conversations with Dr. Bruce Perry, Lisa Jakub, Micah and Diana LeCert, the actor who played Little Ricky, Chief Matt, and other guests. He also names several people he still hopes to interview. These memories reinforce his goal of maintaining a noncritical, believing, and accepting environment where survivors and guests can tell their stories without fear of dismissal. Reading from Shattered by the Darkness Williams reads from Chapter Eight of Shattered by the Darkness, describing the period after he first refused further abuse by his father. Although the physical abuse stopped, he recalls insomnia, isolation, emotional neglect, a continuing desire for paternal affirmation, and the fear that nobody would believe him. He compares the aftermath of sexual abuse to a glass heart shattered by a sledgehammer and explains that recovery began one small piece at a time. Recognize, Find Safety, and Regulate The first three steps in the host's recovery road map are recognizing and naming what happened, determining whether the survivor is currently safe, and regulating the body's response before trying to solve larger problems. Williams discusses identifying triggers, unhealthy behaviors, intimidation, and perceived threats. He recommends breathing, tapping, walking, rest, and the five-four-three-two-one sensory exercise as ways to redirect attention and lower acute anxiety. Reach Out, Process, and Rebuild The next steps are reaching out to trusted people, processing the experience at a manageable pace, and rebuilding what trauma took away. Williams urges survivors to develop a support system, reject self-blame, examine their triggers and losses, and restore routines, confidence, goals, decision-making, and personal control. He distinguishes healthy boundaries, which protect a person, from walls, which keep everyone out. Growing from Survival Toward Hope The final step is growth: moving from merely surviving toward living with strength, purpose, and a renewed sense of personal worth. Williams introduces the SAFE reminder - stop, assess, find support, and engage the next step - while distinguishing stress, anxiety, trauma, and abuse. He closes by emphasizing journaling, Christian faith, service to others, and the message he has repeated throughout the program's history: there is always hope.

Peter McGraw 4:59 PM (1 hour ago) to me Episode 308 - Joe is still missing, but the show must go on! The boys are back for another Saturday Night Pregame and kick things off by recapping last week's fun, including an even more fun Sunday spent out on the golf course. From there, the guys look ahead to the evening as they prepare for a night of dancing at the Golden Era Rave. Before the party gets started, though, they dive into a deeper conversation about young athletes who leave college to pursue professional sports and then try to return to college athletics. Should they be allowed to go back? The boys debate the topic and want to know what you think. The conversation then shifts to last week's news to start the new week, and unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of happy news to discuss. The guys cover the devastating flooding in Nepal, more concerns about what Americans can and can't safely eat, and some other tough headlines from around the world. Even when the news is rough, the boys know how to end things on a positive note. As always, they finish the episode with some feel good stories. Grab a drink and get ready — it's another classic episode of the Saturday Night Pregame!

Your body is talking to your brain constantly, telling it either 'I'm safe' or 'I'm not safe.' The posture you default to when no one's watching might be the thing keeping you stuck. Amy Cuddy, the social psychologist behind one of the most-watched TED Talks ever, sat down to unpack what actually builds confidence when the world feels unstable. She talks about the difference between faking it and becoming it, why imposter syndrome hits 75-85% of people, and why the bullies who came after her post-TED fame taught her more about personal power than the research ever did. You'll hear about the exact breathing pattern she uses before high-stakes moments, the simple writing exercise that beats any pep talk, and why she thinks reframing anxiety as excitement changes everything. There's also a story about a nurse named Alex Wubbels who got thrown against a wall for doing the right thing, and what that taught Amy about the kind of bravery that has no glory attached to it. This conversation will make you rethink every time you've shrunk yourself to avoid being noticed. Sit up straight, not for anyone else, but because you deserve the respect you keep giving away. Bullied: The Culture of Cruelty and the Surprising Power of Social Bravery Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges Amy's website Amy on Instagram Amy on LinkedIn Amy's TED Talk In this episode you will: Reclaim your sense of personal power using postural feedback and 4-7-8 breathing before high-stakes moments Rewrite the self-doubt that keeps you silent by practicing self-affirmation theory rooted in your core values Transform pre-performance anxiety into excitement using Alison Wood Brooks's reframing research Discover why bumblers earn more trust than pointers when things go wrong in public Overcome imposter syndrome by shifting focus from how you're judged to how you can serve others Draw the line between confidence and arrogance so self-belief fuels you instead of blinding you For more information go to https://lewishowes.com/1973 More SOG episodes we think you'll love!
