As another year draws to a close, it's time to pause, look back, and take stock. As has become something of a tradition, this article shares with you my 2025 gameplay experience, some stats about the blog, my event attendance, a summary of the blog's finances and a brief look ahead to 2026. It's as much for my own record as it is for anyone who wants to know more about what 2025 has been like for me and the blog. Just don't expect any grand conclusions or dramatic discussions.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/12/27/2025-a-year-in-review-saturday-review/Useful LinksTranquility: The Descent review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/10/18/tranquility-the-descent-saturday-review/Tapestry review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2019/11/09/tapestry-saturday-review/Villagers review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/10/01/villagers-saturday-review/Mystic Vale review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2018/12/08/mystic-vale/A Gentle Rain review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/07/05/a-gentle-rain-saturday-review/Knarr review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/07/20/knarr-saturday-review/Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2021/11/27/oath-chronicles-of-empire-and-exile-saturday-review/Ayar: Children of the Sun review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/11/22/ayar-children-of-the-sun-saturday-review/Wyrmspan review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/12/20/wyrmspan-saturday-review/General Orders: Sengoku Jidai review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/11/01/general-orders-sengoku-jidai-saturday-review/UK Games Expo 2025 review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/06/07/uk-games-expo-2025-saturday-review/The Human Side of Miniatures Games guest post: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/12/16/mini-magic-the-human-side-of-miniatures-games-topic-discussion/How Board Games Build Communication Skills guest post: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/11/18/the-hidden-language-of-co-op-gaming-how-board-games-build-communication-skills-topic-discussion/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Belong by Moavii | https://www.youtube.com/@MoaviiMusicFree To Use | https://freetouse.com/musicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comTravel by Lukrembo | https://soundcloud.com/lukremboFree To Use | https://freetouse.com/musicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comWe Are by Moavii | https://www.youtube.com/@MoaviiMusicFree To Use | https://freetouse.com/musicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comBreakfast in Paris by Alex-Productions | https://onsound.eu/Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_USAesthetic by Alex-Productions | https://onsound.eu/Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_USSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

I made a list of prompts, and wrote a bite-sized story for each one. They don’t live in the same universe, but they’re all a little off-kilter from what you might expect from holiday fare. And if you pay attention, you’ll notice that the last line of each story becomes the first line of the next. Today’s prompt is Icicle. Board games are often seen as a way to bring people together. They're a social activity, even for solo gamers. When we sit down to play, we fall into familiar rhythms of turns, actions and mechanisms. We don't even need to share the same language. Playing board games is a time when gestures, shared goals, and the actions within the magic circle of the game itself act as a way for us to communicate. Board games themselves are like a shared language, where friendly rivalry, cooperative play and everything else sometimes conveys more than words ever can.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/11/25/games-as-lingua-franca-how-board-games-can-overcome-language-barriers-topic-discussion/Useful LinksPandemic review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/01/18/pandemic-saturday-review/Tapestry review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2019/11/09/tapestry-saturday-review/Ofrenda review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/05/10/ofrenda-saturday-review/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Over Oceans by Alex-Productions | https://onsound.eu/Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_USEndless by Moavii | https://www.youtube.com/@MoaviiMusicFree To Use | https://freetouse.com/musicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comSurvival Mode by Unheard | https://freetouse.com/music/unheardFree To Use | https://freetouse.com/musicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comTeapot by Lukrembo | https://soundcloud.com/lukremboFree To Use | https://freetouse.com/musicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/(Photo by Stefan on Unsplash)
We officially wrap up season 2 this week with the recap episode. Two-thirds of the "Three Dads" are back. Unfortunately, the recording schedule didn't work with Isaiah, and he had to miss out this time. (We're sorry!!!!!) Join Shawn and I as we sit down to discuss the joy of season 2, statistics, and finding guests. Once again, thank you to all of our guests and our listeners! This podcast is only made better by all of you. We look forward to hearing more of your important stories. A big thanks to Shawn for taking the lead on this episode. Isaiah, we'll make it up to you. I swear. *Side note: Something went wrong with the audio during my recording. The audio quality is not up to snuff. To my audiophiles out there, please accept my apology. Happy Veterans Day to all who have served! Today, we honor those who have chosen to dedicate a portion of their lives to serving their country. Today I have a very special guest, Jerry Wadian. Jerry is a Vietnam veteran and a journalist. On today's bonus episode, we discuss his time in the service as well as the important work he does helping other veterans share their stories. As the son, grandson, and nephew of many vets, I would love to extend my thanks to everyone who has served. The sacrifices you have made have not gone unnoticed. Your commitment to the defense of the United States is appreciated not only today but every day. ***Editorial Note: Jerry brings up the use of a slur that soldiers used during his time in Vietnam. Here at Once There Was a Podcast, we do not condone, want to justify, or promote the use of racial slurs. The discussion was left in to provide insight into mindsets at the time and to offer a chance to understand a time that many of us know too little about. Storytime: “We'll be here all night.” Special Thanks to: Jerry Wadian Veterans everywhere Alex (my sound guru) Helena and Weston Fantz (of the band Not Jupiter) for the music My Wife and Daughter You Instagram: Oncetherewasapod Facebook: Once There Was a Podcast Podcast Email: oncetherewasapod@gmail.com Linktree: https://linktr.ee/oncetherewasapod Storytime Submission Link (requires a sign-in for security reasons): https://forms.gle/Qd4XCkrBxtBnJeRp9 Additional Audio and Music: Music by Helena and Weston Fantz (Not Jupiter) High School Crowd 1/Courtesy of Epidemic Sound

In this episode of Just Press Record, Matt Zeigler welcomes back Dave Nadig for a conversation about music discovery, community, and the art of curation. The two explore how radio, mixtapes, blogs, and the internet have shaped the way we find and share music across generations. From college radio stations to TikTok, from Dr. Demento to The Cramps revival, they discuss how music connects people, defines eras of life, and captures fleeting cultural moments. (You can follow it here on your platform of choice: Spotify / Apple / YouTube / other)In the most recent episode, presenters Steve Lamacq ands Stuart Dredge get stuck into...Listener Richard had a great question about music journalism – and Steve has a lot to say when answering: what's changed about music journalism, whether music journalism is still important, where the music print media has gone, and what the future of music writing holds.(Plus - does Steve get paid when his 1991 “Nevermind” NME review is re-printed today?)Stu's Big Number is 75 million – and they are “spam tracks” that Spotify has removed from its service in the last year alone. This is where Matilda's legacy begins, her origin story —among the castles, chaos, and clout of 11th-century Lombardy. No More Paywalls! In this special edition of the Arete Coach Podcast, Severin Sorensen explores the intersection of AI and music, reflecting on his personal journey with AI-assisted composition. Hans Christian Andersen wrote, "Where words fail, music speaks." What's the music in you that needs voice and delivery? In this episode, Sorensen explores AI's potential to revolutionize creativity, democratize music composition, and serve as a tool for personal expression and leadership storytelling. He encourages listeners to explore AI's role in amplifying human emotion through sound. Recorded one year after his first AI-music exploration in Episode 1166, this episode delves into the evolution of AI in music, the emotional power of sound, and how AI can serve as a creative partner. Key Themes & Insights AI's Role in Music Creation: Sorensen discusses three models of AI-assisted music:Done-for-You AI: Fully AI-generated music.Done-With-You AI: AI-assisted composition.Do-It-Yourself with AI: Human-driven music enhanced by AI tools.Emotional Resonance of Music: Music connects with people through memory, nostalgia, and deep emotions. The Neuroscience of Music: Referencing Dr. Daniel J. Musical Experiments & AI Innovations "Semper Fi Homecoming": A tribute to military service members returning home."25 Years of Wisdom": A song created live using AI to honor Lance Descourouez's milestone as a Vistage Chair."Toccata and Stratocaster": An AI-driven musical duel between J.S. Bach and Jimi Hendrix, demonstrating AI's improvisational potential."One in Us": A song inspired by Chip Webster's book Unity in Service, emphasizing community and service. Ultimately, the episode serves as a testament to music's universal ability to connect, heal, and inspire, even when AI is involved in its creation. Sorensen challenges listeners to consider AI not as a mechanical entity but as a new kind of instrument—one that can be guided by human intent to shape profound and deeply personal artistic expressions. Ending with reflections on legacy, leadership, and the role of music in storytelling, he leaves the audience with a thought-provoking question: What unspoken words could take flight if given wings of artistry?
