It is a delight to have back two previous guests, Nikita Baksalyar and Lionel Faber, for a wide-ranging conversation that touches on many advances in SAFE Network development. Centering around the recently released Vault program library, we explore the implications of other advances, including new data types, how they relate to each other, safecoin integration, and a lot more. The concept of the Perpetual Web--private, secure and free--takes on much greater clarity. Enjoy. The SAFE Network is a project of such large scope, doing things that have never been done, it can be hard to wrap one's head around the whole thing without a lot of work. But in the end it is for people to use. It needs to be easily adopted and made to work by everyone. As core development progresses rapidly towards beta launch, tracking the evolution of the user experience (UX) development can help everyone understand the potentialities for this vast project from a practical, people-empowering perspective. To help us with that we talk to Jim Collinson, a UX Designer at MaidSafe. He walks us through some of the approaches and priorities of UX design in general, and shares insights about the process of evolving UX in parallel to the core team putting final form to the networks basic functionality. MaidSafe's Crust (Connections in Rust) program library was necessary due to lack of existing tech to do what was needed for the SAFE Network. The QUIC protocol has evolved and now provides a connection solution which the whole internet will likely be moving to--really great for the internet at large, and really handy for the SAFE Network's development. The SAFE project will be an early adopter, because the protocol already contains the needed functionality to make further development of Crust unnecessary. We talk about this move, the nature of both Crust and QUIC, and more, with MaidSafe's back-end lead, Spandan Shamar. As usual Spandan is very helpful in breaking this all down for us simple folks, but hopefully being informative to dev types, as well. This is part 2 of a wide ranging discussion about the SAFE Network, with the two people most familiar with all aspects of it, MaidSAFE's Founder and CEO, David Irvine and CTO, Viv Rajkumar. To guide our discussion we focused on the 21 Fundamentals of the SAFE Network as linked below. Amongst many other great insights, in this section David goes briefly over each fundamental and summarizes where each stands -- i.e., what's done and what is yet to be done. ####Music *Safe Crossroads Beta*, an original piece composed and performed by Nicholas Koteskey of Two Faced Heroes ####Links [The Fundamentals of the SAFE Network](https://safenetforum.org/t/safe-network-fundamentals-context/25352) [SAFE Network Forum](https://safenetforum.org) [All the encryption layers for SAFEnet](https://safenetforum.org/t/all-the-encryption-layers-for-safenet/2270) -- Very useful forum post [SAFE Network School](https://safecrossroads.net/safe-network-school/) -- A SAFE Crossroads Series

We last talked with Jim McCanney back in March 2018 when he had recently been selected as one of five international finalists in the Water Abundance Xprize. In this episode we follow up to find out what happened. In addition to that we do a good coverage of the technologies he's developed to efficiently extract water from the air and, more importantly, how to power the process with his Wing Generator, his game-changing development in using the wind to generate power for any (and almost all) uses. If you are not familiar with his Wing Generator Project, I guarantee that you have seen nothing quite like this. It's brilliant, and when you get the picture you're certain to agree. Then the question is, What are we going to do about it? As the various parts of SAFE Network development come together, facility for mobile access to and use of the network becomes a greater priority. Most individuals now use mobile devices for a large part, if not all, of their internet access. Our guest is Lionel Faber, a front-end developer with MaidSafe's remote office in Chennai, India. We talk about mobile development for SAFE in general and the new developer tools for native Android apps in particular. The SAFE Network offers something unique: the opportunity to make truly decentralized apps that interact directly with the network rather than requiring for servers to be maintained. MaidSafe just released a completely in-house version of the SAFE Browser with some very cutting-edge features and toggles to explore experimental features. It's still rough-cut,as browser experiences go, but it opens the door to some very advanced development options as the SAFE Network matures toward readiness for launch. Helping us get a feel for this step forward are two of the MaidSafe front-end developers most responsible for this new step: Gabriel Viganotti and Josh Wilson. Understanding where the SAFE Browser has come from, where it is and where it's going can give one new insight and a real feel for why SAFE Network development is really in a field of its own. I've been wanting to do an overview of the SAFE Network for some time, as a sort of new introduction, an update on where the project has currently gotten to, and a view of what's ahead. Dug Campbell from MaidSafe helps me try to accomplish this, because I found it really hard to do by myself! Dug has gained a lot of experience talking about the SAFE Network with a wide variety of different people in varying circumstances. He also, being based there in MaidSafe headquarters, has continual access to the heart of the team. Ayurveda is a practice for maintaining and restoring health with origins dating back 10,000 years. It has been practiced consistently since. Might there be something to learn here? Might it offer choices for health and healing which are not available in the modes and institutions which most of us are used to? I recently had the privilege of meeting and interviewing a Vaidya (practitioner/doctor) of Ayurveda, Lokesh Rathuri. He presents the basic understandings on which Ayurveda is built, in a way that opens the subject for a beginning understanding. It is a different view than most in the West are used to. A rather historical event in the United States gives us an interesting opportunity to examine a bunch important dynamics through the lens (or "Looking Glass") of Technology and Choice as a tool. There may never have been a time, not only in the United States but the rest of the world, when we have been so connected and yet so polarized at the same time. Whether you hold to the old Chinese curse ("May you live in Interesting Times") or not, there is no question that we do live in interesting times. While a listener may be able to guess the co-hosts' political inclinations, this episode is not about that. It's actually much more about what we all have in common, and how the interplay of technology and choice can help us understand what's happening and effectively use technology to magnify our individual and collective influence. In this episode we catch up on some of the things that have been going on in SAFE Network development, where it's been and what's coming down the line now, including the roll out of public testing of the automated peer-to-peer connection library, Crust (standing for "Connected" "Rust"). How do you ensure all the nodes of an amorphous P2P network get and stay connected, even past firewalls and routers? How do you do it when most nodes are being run by non-technical people using their spare computer resources? The demands are high. Will Crust be up to the job? As the creator of something, do you give it life? As a fiction writer, does a story acquire a life of its own? As a software programmer, do you sometimes feel that what you're creating has something to teach you? Is your creation of any sort just something you do and have done, or do you nurture it and query it about what it needs to succeed? I recently had the pleasure of visiting my old friend, Robert Worstell, on his farm in Missouri, after 20 years of not seeing each other in person, but 15 years of regular communication and collaboration. This was a very meaningful and useful time for us both, and I hope our conversation conveys some fraction of meaning and usefulness to the listener. We mine a vein of gold here, not just about writing, but about the relationship of anyone with the subject of what he or she is creating. It's a perspective that applies across the board, whether one is a writer, a programmer, a salesperson or carpenter, etc. We hit on something very interesting regarding the intersection of technology and choice which I, personally at least, found quite profound. My old friend and sometimes co-host, Robert Worstell, returns and we explore the topic of research, especially from the angle of learning how to write fiction, and writing in general. Over the years Robert has rolled up his sleeves and plunged into many subject areas to establish for himself what the underlying principles are that allow one to master the subject or action, used what he learned to be effective in the field, and then shared what he learned with others. In the process he has published an impressive volume of books, articles and stories, and learned to make a reasonable living doing so, sharing what he has learned so that others can benefit from what he finds. In our discussion we also get in pretty close to the essence of what makes the pair of concepts "technology" and "choice" such a powerful tool to examine how to do things. #### Music Bumper music: *Phantom from Space* by Kevin MacLeod. #### Links [Free stuff from Robert for listeners of this episode](https://calm.li/RobertWorstellProfile) [Package of three free courses on writing](http://BecomingAWriter.thinkific.com) FREE [Go Thunk Yourself, Again](https://www.books2read.com/u/mBPQoD) -- A great book containing an outline of Roberts approach to researching subjects. On Thursday evening, May 24th, 2018, MaidSafe released publically the PARSEC consensus protocol. PARSEC stands for Protocol for Asynchronous, Reliable, Secure and Efficient Consensus. It is being released under very permissive, open-source GPL and MIT licensing for potential use in a wide variety of circumstances by a wide variety of projects quite aside from the SAFE Network. For the MaidSafe, the release of PARSEC puts the final major research barrier behind it, opening the door for a straightforward path to releasing the SAFE Network. More accurate timelines should now become possible. Our guest is Pierre Chevalier, a software engineer with MaidSafe, who is one of the authors of the PARSEC protocol whitepaper. We make an attempt to help listeners who lack a technical background to grasp the meaning and importance of PARSEC, as well as many aspects of the SAFE Network and consensus challenges in related projects. We also try to include enough to appeal to the more technically savvy. Enjoy. The Meritocracy Chronicle will be a regularly recurring segment, dedicated to discussing and documenting the evolution of the game SFEOS and the principles of crowd founding. See links below for more details on both SFEOS and Crowd Founding. The term *meritocracy* can have a variety of connotations and meaning, depending upon users and context. Here it is used only to indicate that the levers of control and influence within a group or activity are best and most justly yielded by those with "skin in the game," i.e., those who have invested time, energy, heart and effort to the creation and sustenance of the activity. The advent of cryptocurrencies, crypto tokens, smart contracts, and other such tools offer a lot of possibilities that are worth exploring in terms of creation and maintenance of social activities, groups and economies. Building SFEOS is a project to implement and evolve those tools in an environment that is interesting, engaging and desirable, but where catastrophic events have less catastrophic real-world consequences. In other words, we want SFEOS to be a big, beautiful, inviting sandbox which will, hopefully, grow to be a potentially lucrative economic and social reality. Having fun, sharing experience and learning are the keynotes. The Meirtocracy Chronicle is your touchstone on how and where it's all going. As promised in the last episode, Chadrick Mahaffey shares his presentation about EOS, the history behind it, the value proposition and why he is bullish on its mass adoption. This is far from an exhaustive and authoritative treatise. It maybe even leaves one with more questions than answers. But it is a good foothold about the EOS platform as it is developing, and why an enterprise developer such as Chadrick could be excited about the possibilities of what should be enabled by it. Chadrick Mahaffey and I introduce you to SFEOS, a project that he originated and is shepherding, that I and others are helping along. SFEOS is a lot of things at once: It's a game that is fun, that engages players in adventure and economics and social organization in the game universe. It's a project that is developed, advanced and governed solely by players with real skin in the game, those who contribute value. It's a distributed autonomous organization/community with an economic system that acts both in the game and outside the game to incentivize and reward all participants. It's a tool to painlessly drive adoption of cryptocurrencies and crypto-assets and integrate them into day-to-day experience. It's a learning tool and testing ground in the realms of crypto asset, social and political organization, economics, etc. It's all these and more. Mostly it's designed to be FUN! Want to play? **NOTE: There is an explosive Easter Egg of revelation in the body of this episode regarding cryptography. It is likely you haven't heard about it before, so keep hands on your bonnet.** "Alternative Energy" as we've known it has been a disaster for the most part. Everybody wants to "be green," do it right, be efficient, be really smart, but billions in government subsidies have mainly resulted in no progress except to line a lot of pockets and increase central control. Professor Jim McCanney is an almost unicorn-level oddity amongst scientists: a truly independent scientist who has funded his own research and never signed non-disclosure agreements or other intellectual chains to any government, corporation or other institution. He's gone his own way and applied his genius where he thought it was needed. Scientists and their institutions either love him or hate him. He's made many discoveries that contradict "main stream" scientists. You'll have to judge for yourself whether he connects with truth or not. Just remember to use objective rather than authoritarian standards in your analysis. Prof. McCanney's Wing Generator and Water Project is a monumental effort to break the chains of centralized control of power and water, and give choice back to individuals and smaller groups. Real science and independent action are the road. Government subsidies? Not so much. How about cheap, plentiful power that is available almost anywhere? Can real science do that? Can WE do that? Might Bitcoin miners profit from using this resource? You decide. It's sure worth giving a listen to someone with his track record. MUSIC Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod. The main problems in talking about the SAFE Network are understanding (1) the enormous scope of the project, (2) the various specific innovations it represents, (3) how those innovations interrelate in the overall system, and (4) why the approach is fundamentally different than pretty much anything else that is being attempted. Regardless of the technical level of the enquirer, Project SAFE has lacked a really good landing place to begin exploration into it. In this episode we interview the originators and main contributors to the recently released SAFE Network Primer and give some very good insights to what the SAFE Network is about, why it's important and how to more easily approach and understanding of how it is designed. ####Music Music for this episode: *Safe Crossroads Beta*, an original piece composed and performed by Nicholas Koteskey of Two Faced Heroes ####Links [SAFE Network Primer](http://safenetworkprimer.com/) [SAFE Network School podcast series](https://safecrossroads.net/safe-network-school/) [SAFE Network Forum](https://safenetforum.org/) [SAFE Developer Forum](https://forum.safedev.org/) [SAFE Network Wiki](https://safenetwork.wiki/en/Main_Page) [SAFEnetwork.org](https://safenetwork.org) [MaidSafe](http://maidsafe.net) [SAFE Crossroads subscription links](https://safecrossroads.net/subscribe/)
I start off this episode sharing a bit about why I'm doing this series on festivals in general and the One Love Festival in particular, and why it's important. Part of this is a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of abandoning existing systems and technologies prematurely, in an effort to use new social systems and technologies to improve on or fix existing ones. There's a balance to be struck. Food for thought. Then I share a delightful interview with Melanie Davenport and her husband, Nick. Melanie and Nick are avid festival goers and share why. They also are vendors at festivals, where Melanie shares her custom clothing creations, Gypsy Spirit Apparel, designed especially for the needs and wants of other enthusiasts. There are specific needs and her adaptation of the technologies she uses is interesting. We also talk about their introduction to cryptocurrencies and the appeal to this community, and how it can help it evolve in desirable directions. It was a great pleasure to visit them in their home and get to see Melanie's operation. See the links below to get access to what she's about. We also talk about his part in last year's One Love Festival, and how his technical application will be helping transform it even more as it goes forward. Modern technology has enabled us to do so many things that were never possible in history. People move more, farther and faster than ever in history. The internet has allowed us to communicate and form relationships with others from almost anywhere. But the impulse for in-person connection with others, the forming of personal bonds, is strong and too often unfulfilled. Festivals of all sorts are exploding in popularity all around the world. These events take many forms, for many reasons. What they hold in common is that they are gatherings of people of common interest, in person, to celebrate community in their preferred forms. In this episode, we talk with Ken Schwenker, a motion picture producer who has gone on to produce a series of powerful events and festivals to help meet that need for true community reconnection. We talk about the rational and technology for putting on such a festival, what the six-year-running One Love Festival is about, and drop hints about other technological innovations to be forthcoming surrounding this year's festival. #### Music Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod. #### Links [One Love Festival](http://http://onelovefest.com/) [Leaders Causing Leaders](http://http://www.leaderscausingleaders.com/) [Soundcloud feed for Technology & Choice and SAFE Crossroads podcasts](https://soundcloud.com/safecrossroads) Subscribe on iTunes under SAFE Crossroads--John Ferguson

The SAFE Network is a huge software infrastructure project which is currently in Alpha 2, a network of distributed nodes, hosted on cloud servers for MaidSafe as the many intricacies of the architecture are fine tuned. A future iteration will return to nodes hosted by external participants at home, but Alpha 2 exposes a stable set of interfaces which developers can use learn how the network functions and how to build applications for it. > >**Governance** - the act or activity of looking after and making decisions about something -- Merriam-Webster.com Those wary of the complexity, inequities and corruption of govern-**ment** tend to also be wary of the idea of govern-**ance**. But there's no way around it: Governance (by the above definition) happens one way or the other, because otherwise **stuff** just **happens**. Not an optimum scene, for sure. Arthur Breitman, CT0 and lead developer of Tezos, started thinking about this years ago, and started developing Tezos as a way to account for the inevitable need to adapt the means of decision-making and action within a decentralized cryptocurrency environment. In this episode we try to take a simpleton's approach to examining Bitcoin and related currencies in a way most anyone can follow, and then examine the factors that need to be managed in any decentralized cryptocurrency system, and start to examine how Tezos deals with these points. IN THIS EPISODE This is the second of what we're calling The Hemp Corner of Technology & Choice. After doing a high-altitude overview of hemp and cannabis in the first Hemp Corner, we thought it would be a good idea to work at straightening out all the scrambled thinking about cannabis and hemp that has been brought about by nearly eight decades of prohibition and contradictory propaganda. To do that we called in the big guns. Joy Beckerman-Maher is a 25 year veteran of laboring for hemp. As we discover in the interview, that's a much more literal statement than it might at first appear. Joy will (and did) call one down for calling her an "expert" because she has been in the trenches, dealing with the governmental and legal sides of the industry as well as all the production and educational sides. However we decide to label her, SHE KNOWS HER STUFF. This interview was a blast, and took some turns that caught me by surprise. I think we achieved what we set out to do, though. And we had fun getting there. Hope you do, too. MUSIC Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod. IN THIS EPISODE The hope of Bitcoin enabling fast, frictionless micropayments is one of the promises of the technology that has excited us all. But it's been a long time coming and, especially in Bitcoin, it has seemed a long way off. Enter Ryan X. Charles and "Yours." Yours is a social media platform that will enable true micropayments that can get everyone that contributes value to the platform to get paid, proportional to the value given. Not a new idea, but Yours is about to prove it will happen. Ryan says the tech is solid and will allow Bitcoin micropayments within the Yours ecosystem without changing the Bitcoin core code, and is soon going into public testing on the TestBitcoin network. There are a lot of ins and outs. Listen and enjoy. And be encouraged. MUSIC Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod.
