086 - Chris Canfield explains multi-link suspension designs

If you think mountain bike suspension is a mystery, you're not alone. From kinematics to anti-squat to compression ratios, there's a lot of terminology piled on top of designs like VPP, Horst Link, CVA, DW Link.  Add CBF to that list and you have the suspension design and philosophy of Chris Canfield. He's my guest today and had been designing full suspension mountain bikes for almost 25 years. We talk about how things work, why multi-linkage bikes work well (as well as why some maybe don't work as well as others), and we try, really hard, to explain brake jack and why braking forces negatively affect suspension performance. And after all that, we talk about not one, but TWO new suspension patents he's working on that are truly wild, and he explains them publicly for the very first time, right here. Today we have Blister Bike Editor David Golay talking to reviewer Dylan Wood about all the bikes and gear they've recently been spending time on, including some A-B comparisons of short-travel, DW-link bikes at both ends of the price spectrum; a range of longer-travel Enduro bikes both fairly conventional and quite unusual; some very intriguing pedals; and they mix in some thoughts on the importance (or lack thereof) of bike weight, and the current state of the Shimano vs. SRAM drivetrain wars.TOPICS & TIMES:Pivot Trail 429 (1:03)Ibis Ripley AF (2:30)Shimano drivetrains (7:37)Canfield Lithium (12:05)Commencal Meta TR (17:43)Forbidden Dreadnought (27:41)Hustle REMtech magnetic “clipless” pedals (35:48)RELATED LINKS:Pivot Trail 429Ibis Ripley AFCanfield LithiumCommencal Meta TRForbidden DreadnoughtBecome a Blister MemberCamping in Gunnison & Crested Butte See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Mountain bike rear suspension technology has changed drastically in the last decade or two. Do you even understand how your bike works? Luckily, today we talk to Dave Weagle, father of the DW Link suspension design and a prolific engineer in the world of mountain bikes. He helps us understand concepts like anti-squat, anti-rise, and more. Things get a little nerdy, but don't worry, Weagle has a very common-sense approach: Ride a mountain bike, and if you like it, it is good.
