And so we're back from outer space (or wherever it is Indieventure hosts like to go on holiday). Yep, after our little recording hiatus – seamlessly covered for with pre-recorded Pokémon chat, bet you didn't even notice that was a weird one – your intrepid trio is back together for the first time in a month, and naturally we all have one question on our minds: what have we all been playing while we were apart? Of course, two-thirds of the group were on dream holidays and thus didn't play a whole lot, but there's still plenty to talk about, between all the cool indies that launched in April/May and all the awesome games that have been sitting in our backlogs waiting for exactly this kind of downtime! So Rebecca (who is the only one who hadn't been on her holidays yet at the time of recording) dusted off some intriguing older one-shot indies in the form of 2:22AM and Babette, as well as falling down the Forbidden Solitaire rabbit hole. Rachel made the most of about one week with her PC, also playing Forbidden Solitaire as well as Wax Heads, Phonopolis, and a frankly unbelievable amount of other games given the short time she was home. Liam has only really played one indie game all month, but since it's Mina the Hollower he's certainly not short of opinions to share with the group. We end as ever on our latest round of hyperfixations, and Rachel currently thinks there's nothing better in this world than a sweet little TikTok remix about a cat named Serafino (and she's probably right!). Liam proves that South Korea is still completely dominating the Netflix original programming market with Culinary Class Wars, a cooking competition made extra special by the contrasting personalities of the two hosts. And Rebecca is finally ready to talk about The Saint of Steel series by T Kingfisher, the series singlehandedly responsible for turning her opinion of romantasy on its head. How did the Fender Stratocaster, a guitar that has been in continuous manufacture since 1954, Suddenly become the subject of an intellectual property dispute? Well, maybe this didn't exactly come from Out of the Woods. Fender has had 5 utility patents, 1 design patent, and 3 trademarks relevant to the Stratocaster Through the Years. But the one thing that's been Slipping Through Their Fingers all this time was protection for that iconic (or is it?) body shape. After their design patent expired, their trademark application was Denied, and US copyright was definitionally Forbidden, anyone could see that Nothing Really Matters to the US Patent and Trademark Office, and Fender was left Walking in the Snow. Very similar (some might say identical) body shapes entered the market. It's Late, but perhaps not too late. Fender sailed the Seven Seas to another country with different copyright laws. But with only a German court order in hand, will Fender be able to make this exclusive protection Live Forever, or is it just Cheap Talk other guitar makers can ignore? On this episode of The Ty Brady Way, Ty sits down with not one but two guests, Russ Gaiser and Mike Flick, co-founders of Retirement Income Headquarters of America, for a conversation that could genuinely change the way you think about retirement and the Social Security decisions most people get dangerously wrong. Russ and Mike come from different backgrounds, Russ from nine years of active duty Air Force and healthcare administration, Mike from systems analysis and human resources, but both arrived at the same conclusion independently: Social Security is most people's biggest pension, and almost nobody is treating it that way. They partnered to fill that gap, building a five-step proprietary planning process that meets people right at the doorstep of retirement and helps them use Social Security as the cornerstone of a plan built to last. The heart of the episode is a myth-busting deep dive into what most people get wrong. The first myth is that you can evaluate Social Security in a vacuum by running a simple break-even analysis for one person. In reality, for married couples especially, every decision ripples outward to affect spousal benefits, survivor benefits, and tax exposure in widowhood. Russ points out that 80% of men die married while 80% of women die single, with the average widow spending 15 years alone, often on a dramatically reduced income that gets taxed worse as a single filer. The second myth is that Social Security is going away entirely. Russ walks through why even in a worst-case scenario where Congress does nothing, roughly 80% of benefits would still be payable through payroll taxes, and why claiming early out of fear of missing out often means locking in a permanently smaller benefit. The third myth, and perhaps the most costly, is the assumption that you automatically receive half of your spouse's benefit. The reality involves a web of rules around full retirement age, early claiming reductions, and timing that most people never untangle on their own. Russ and Mike each share a client story that illustrates exactly what's at stake. Russ helped a divorced woman discover she qualified for a widower's benefit on her ex-husband's record, something Social Security never told her and wouldn't have, netting her roughly $60,000 she passed on to her children as a legacy. Mike helped a woman who had been flatly told by a Social Security office that she couldn't receive a divorced spouse benefit because she was still working. That was incomplete information. She ended up receiving over $13,000 in benefits she was told she couldn't have. Both stories share the same moral: the rules are complex, the SSA is not legally permitted to give advice, and the cost of not knowing is enormous. On the business side, Russ and Mike are equally sharp. Mike does a calendar audit, color-coding his week green for energy-giving activities like seeing clients, red for draining admin tasks that get delegated, and yellow for necessary obligations. Russ draws the distinction between being interested in excellence and being committed to it, arguing that when you feel the temptation to take shortcuts or deliver generic answers, that's precisely the moment you have to hold the line. Their closing message is direct: 77% of households surveyed by the National Institute on Retirement Security believed they would outlive their money. Russ and Mike's response to that stat is typically not a savings problem. It's a planning strategy problem. Imagine being surrounded by a group of people — their mouths inches from your face — screaming at full volume for hours. That was reportedly the starting point of a practice called blasting inside the Word of Faith Fellowship. Former members told the Associated Press the screaming was meant to cast out demons. But over time, according to dozens of accounts, it allegedly became physical. Members were reportedly punched, choked, held down, and beaten. Injuries including cracked ribs went untreated because the church allegedly prohibited members from seeking outside medical care. The compound maintained a four-room former storage building called the Lower Building where males perceived as serious sinners were reportedly isolated for up to a year. Jamey Anderson, who entered the church at age four, described treatment that other former members called some of the harshest anyone endured. Michael Lowry alleged he was beaten in 2011 over his sexual orientation. Matthew Fenner said he was beaten for approximately two hours in 2013 and has spent more than a decade pursuing charges. Five church members were indicted, a mistrial occurred in 2017, and by 2026 the cases had been transferred to a special prosecutor.
