Tonight's guest, Michael Vashon, was featured on last week's show and on that show, he talked about several of the Sasquatch encounters he's had, over the years, in Maine. Bigfoot could get official status if proposed legislation passes making it the state cryptid of California. If nothing else, the effort shows that fascination with cryptids has an outsized footprint on our culture. We look at why mythical creatures continue to capture imaginations - as well as passions - of die-hard believers, despite no evidence for their existence. An author uncovers the origin of a beloved hoax in the American West and its unexpected ties to a real animal and historical medical breakthrough. But are we looking for creature delights in all the wrong places? A tally of Earth's species reveals that far more remain unidentified than are currently known. Newly discovered critters such as the Yeti crab and an organism dubbed the Flying Spaghetti Monster are so strange, it challenges us to separate fauna fact from folktale. Tonight's guest, Michael Vashon, has had numerous Sasquatch sightings and interactions over the years. Those experiences he's had with them are the reason he and Janelle Graff created the Maine Bigfoot Foundation. The reason why the Maine Bigfoot Foundation was created was to get people to head back out into the Maine wilderness, so they could learn more about it and learn about Sasquatch as well. Over the years, Mike has learned a lot about them. Then again, after having 17 encounters with Sasquatch, he should have learned quite a bit about them. Hospitals Are Using YETI Coolers for Heart Transplants — TransMedics Just Built Something Better (TMDX Q1 2026)

On the Q1 2026 earnings call for TransMedics, the CEO said something that stopped everyone in their tracks. Major transplant programs, he said, are going to Home Depot and buying YETI coolers to preserve human hearts before transplantation. None of those coolers are FDA-approved. None are validated for that purpose. That is the status quo TransMedics is trying to replace. This is CSI's update on TransMedics following their May 5th earnings report. TransMedics is not a semiconductor company — it sits in CSI's small bets basket, a collection of positions outside the core semiconductor thesis that Kasey follows closely. The company is building what it describes as the premier program for organ transplantation, combining a warm perfusion technology called the Organ Care System with its own aviation logistics network to dramatically improve the odds that a donated organ reaches its recipient in viable condition. The Q1 2026 numbers are solid. Revenue of $174 million, up 21% year over year, with 82% of organ transplants now covered by TransMedics' own logistics service. But the more interesting story is what comes next across four distinct growth catalysts.First, the CHOPS system — a new cold preservation device TransMedics just developed to serve the segment of the heart transplant market where cold storage is sufficient and warm perfusion is not required. Of 4,646 hearts transplanted in 2025, roughly 2,100 were preserved for less than four hours. That entire segment is currently going to Home Depot coolers. CHOPS is also the control arm TransMedics needed to run the ENHANCE Heart clinical trials — a clever solution to the problem of not being able to find a competitor willing to run head-to-head against their warm perfusion system.Second, European expansion — a logistics partnership with PAD Aviation in Germany and new infrastructure in Italy that could eventually double the total addressable market.Third, the kidney opportunity. Over 20,000 deceased kidney transplants happen annually in the United States. Between 8,000 and 9,000 kidneys are discarded every year due to prolonged ischemic times. TransMedics has designed a Gen 3.0 OCS platform for kidney transplantation, targeting 2027 for market entry.Fourth, the Gen 3.0 platform upgrade for liver, heart, and lung — parallel development tracks that modernize the core product across every organ.Kasey closes with something genuinely useful: an honest accounting of what could go right and what could go wrong, and why she continues to hold a small position. This episode was released to Semi Insider members several weeks before this public version. Members get Kasey and Nick's full research, live Q&A sessions, and analysis like this as it happens. Man, I don’t know how else to say this — this one got me. I sat down with Christian Zeron, the guy behind the Theo N. Harris Instagram, and what started as a watch-world conversation turned into one of the most honest, wide-open talks about hunting, identity, manhood, and what it means to find something that actually moves you. That’s the kind of episode this is. Christian grew up in New Jersey selling vintage Rolexes in college and built a marketing company around it. He’s sharp, he’s articulate, and — up until about six months ago — he had zero connection to the hunting world. Then a client invited him on a hunt in Kentucky and, well, here we are. He killed his first turkey this spring, he’s already got hog hunts lined up in Texas and a dove trip to Argentina on the books, and the guy is all in. Completely, unapologetically, joyfully all in. What I love about Christian is that he brings this fresh set of eyes to our world. He’s not pretending to be someone he’s not. He’s a Ralph Lauren, vintage shotgun, lever-action rifle kind of guy who gets genuinely emotional talking about his late grandfather while butchering his first bird. That’s real. That’s the stuff hunting is actually made of, and it’s the stuff that’s really hard to explain to people who haven’t lived it. We go deep on the watch world and what Rolex figured out about aspiration and identity that most brands never do. We talk camo as identity, Sitka vs. First Lite, Yeti coolers, LVMH, Omega, Casio — and somehow it all connects back to hunting, brand building, and what it means to be a man who collects experiences instead of just stuff. Plus, we dig into what I’m trying to build with Bridger Watch and Christian gives me some real, unfiltered marketing advice on how to position it against Garmin and Apple. This is the kind of conversation that makes you want to call your old man, fire up a steak, and go outside. Strap in. Episode Sponsors onX Hunt If you’re serious about hunting out west, onX isn’t optional — it’s foundational. We’re talking land ownership, access layers, terrain intel, and a full suite of tools built for every phase of the hunt: planning, preparation, and execution. The difference onX makes is simple. It’s confidence. Confidence that you’re in the right spot. Confidence that you’re legal. Confidence that you can find your way back to the truck when the day goes long and the country gets weird. Download the onX Hunt app and become an Elite member today. Use code TRO for 20% off your membership. Website: onxmaps.com Bridger Watch I set out to build a better smartwatch for the hunting community — plain and simple. I was frustrated. I kept pulling my phone out 100 times a day to check onX in the field and thought, why can’t we just have the map on our wrist? So we went down the rabbit hole and built what I genuinely believe is the best smartwatch ever made for hunters. If you’re a watch guy and a hunter, this was built for you. Use code TRO at checkout. Hunting Connects You to Something Bigger Than the Kill Christian’s story about his late grandfather flooding back while he was butchering his first turkey is one of the most honest descriptions of why hunters hunt that I’ve heard in a long time. The harvest, the meat, the field dressing — it all becomes this vessel for memory and emotion and people you’ve lost. And it’s something you genuinely cannot explain to someone who hasn’t felt it. If you’ve ever felt your dad or your grandfather or someone you loved in a duck blind or a wall tent, you know exactly what Christian is talking about. That feeling doesn’t go away. It doesn’t get old. That’s why we keep going back. 2. Identity Is at the Core of Every Purchase Decision — Hunting Included Christian has been living inside luxury brand psychology for over a decade, and watching him apply that lens to the hunting world is genuinely eye-opening. Whether it’s Sitka gear, a Yeti cooler, or a vintage duck camo jacket — we are all making identity statements with every piece of kit we buy. And what’s fascinating is that hunters, who largely pride themselves on being no-nonsense, practical people, are actually some of the most identity-driven consumers out there. The trophy room, the curated camp setup, the brand of camo you wear — it all means something. Knowing that isn’t a bad thing. It’s human nature. 3. Lead With the Tool — Let the Lifestyle Follow Christian’s marketing insight for Bridger Watch — and honestly for any product in the outdoor space — is worth writing down. The temptation is to lead with the vibe, the lifestyle, the beautiful photos. But for a product that has genuine technical superiority in a specific use case, the smarter play is to lead with education and product proof first, and let the lifestyle layer build behind it. Rolex works because it’s 90% signal and 10% tool. A hunting watch should be the opposite: 90% tool, 10% signal. Prove what the product does for real people doing real things, and the identity follows naturally.

ThunderBirds in New England and Bigfoot StoriesOn a clear summer day in a small Massachusetts town, Tay and her mother were walking their two elderly Shih Tzus near the woods behind the house when the atmosphere suddenly changed. The birds and bugs went silent, the air felt unnaturally still, and both dogs froze while staring straight up. A massive shadow swept over them, so large it seemed to cover the whole area, even though the sky was completely clear. Terrified, Tay grabbed one dog and shouted for her mother to do the same, both women feeling as though something unseen was stalking them and targeting the dogs.Moments later, they heard the loud whoosh of enormous wings and the sound of branches breaking high in the trees, but they still couldn't see anything except its immense shadow. Tay then watched her neighbor's sunlit gray roof slowly turn black from one end to the other, as if a giant body had passed over it, before the light returned and everything abruptly went back to normal. When Tay later checked the wooded area, she found broken limbs scattered on the ground, confirming that something very large had moved through the treetops. Though familiar with local birds like eagles and hawks, she was certain this was something far bigger and stranger than anything she had ever encountered in the New England woods.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support.

The episode opens with a discussion of Boom Supersonic and its attempt to revive commercial supersonic air travel. The hosts talk about Boom's successful test flight of a scaled-down prototype, the plan for the Overture airliner, the role of Japan Airlines, and the history of Concorde, including sonic booms, U.S. restrictions on supersonic flight, and the Concorde's drooping nose and hot exterior. A large middle section focuses on AI as practical tooling: how to prompt ChatGPT and vision models more effectively, how OCR and form-filling could save huge amounts of time, and how Andrew's robot demo uses GPT-4 vision to navigate toward butter in a 3D simulation. The discussion expands into agent-style systems such as Cognition Labs' Devon, AI-assisted research and source gathering, productivity gains in editing and transcription, and the idea that AI is best understood as very powerful software rather than a magical wish box. The final stretch moves through several offbeat stories: a Montana Franken sheep case, a feral hog joke discussion, a toxic cat from a plating factory in Japan, and then a long conversation about Dune: Part Two. On Dune, they debate Paul Atreides' moral ambiguity, Chani's role, prophecy, the Butlerian Jihad, and whether the adaptation captures the complexity and unease of the book. Key topics Commercial supersonic aviation revival: Boom Supersonic is discussed as trying to build a modern supersonic airliner, with a successful prototype test flight, a plan f

The episode opens with Justin describing a Cameo birthday message he received from Kirstie Patterson, the performer associated with the viral Willy's Chocolate Experience disaster, and the hosts discuss how the incident became internet-famous, the “depressed Oompa Loompa” label, and how Cameo can be a practical way for someone caught in online notoriety to earn money. They also briefly discuss the “unknown” character from the event and the broader weirdness of the production. A major middle section focuses on SpaceX's Starship test launch, which the hosts describe as a successful suborbital flight that reached space, separation, and orbital speeds even without a landing. From there they move into broader reflections on iteration, feedback loops, AI and robotics progress, the pace of change in the tech world, and the question of how long adoption takes compared with technical feasibility. Key topics Cameo and the Willy's Chocolate Experience aftermath: The hosts talk about a birthday Cameo from Kirstie Patterson, whom they refer to as the depressed Oompa Loompa, and they discuss how the viral Willy's Chocolate Experience became a meme, including the badly shoddy production and the branding around the character. Starship's successful suborbital test launch: They celebrate Starship getting into space, separating, and reaching orbital speeds on a suborbital mission, while noting that booster and ship recovery are still future goals. The episode opens with a long discussion of SpaceX test launches and the broader idea that visible failures are part of iterative engineering. Andrew and Brian contrast that with the Space Shuttle program, noting that shuttle design involved practical compromises, unexpected hazards, and a much messier reality than the idealized version often told. They also briefly touch on the value of publicity and storytelling in aerospace, including drone ship landings and fairing recovery attempts. The conversation then shifts to the Apple Vision Pro, which Andrew describes as an impressive demo but a compromised device lacking a compelling everyday use case. After that, the episode moves through several science and tech topics: early nonlinear video editing systems like Edit Droid and Avid, de-extinction efforts around woolly mammoths and proxy mammoths, dinosaur DNA preservation and decay, Europa's oxygen uncertainty, and naturally occurring hydrogen or 'white hydrogen.' The episode ends with picks and recommendations, including The Plasma Channel and Brian's enthusiastic reaction to Dune Part Two. Key topics SpaceX's failure-driven development model: They discuss SpaceX as an example of iterative engineering where failures are visible and expected, rather than hidden. The contrast is drawn against more traditional aerospace development. Shuttle-era engineering compromises and risk: The Space Shuttle is described as an extraordinary but highly compromised system, with issues including

The episode opens with the hosts riffing about recording and editing workflow, including the value of planning for cuts, trusting the edit, and how much polished media depends on invisible post-production. From there, Andrew introduces a preprint about panspermia via cosmic dust, then the conversation shifts to a monkey-raft explanation for how monkeys may have crossed into South America on floating vegetation islands rather than by land bridge. The middle of the episode becomes a broad science-and-cosmology segment in which Andrew leads a tour through the early universe: inflation, quark and hadron epochs, nucleosynthesis, the photon epoch, recombination, cosmic dark ages, structure formation, and the universe's possible heat-death future. The latter half turns to astronomy experiences and tools, including telescope viewing, iTelescope.net, and amateur observing, before closing on entertainment picks and a long discussion of the Glasgow Willy Wonka event, The Wheel of Time, and the live-action One Piece adaptation. Key topics Editing, performance, and planning for the cut: The hosts discuss how recording and editing change the final shape of media, with examples from magic videos, podcasting, demos, Scam School, and Scam Nation. Brian explicitly says to 'trust the edit,' and Andrew emphasizes that creators should plan for future edits instead of trying to capture everything in one take. They repeatedly return to the role of compute, model scaling, and the economics of AI progress. The latter half of the episode focuses on how AI tools may change creative work and how people should adapt by learning to code, prompt, and experiment rather than resist. The hosts also discuss ChatGPT memory, personalized interactions, and Andrew's experiment turning Sora footage into 3D video for Vision Pro. Near the end, Justin gives a Suno Valentine's Day song generator pick, Brian recommends Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the panel briefly covers Rick and Morty, Dune 2, Madame Web, and speculation that the new Fantastic Four film is set in the 1960s. Andrew also says he was careful about water and food after getting sick on a prior trip, and that he brought antibiotics with him via an online doctor visit so he could treat a likely bacterial illness quickly when it hit. The episode spends a long stretch on Andrew's India trip, including his wife's cousin's wedding events, a reception hosted by in-laws, local McDonald's adaptations, the India-Pakistan border ceremony near Amritsar, and a detailed visit to the Golden Temple. From there the conversation broadens into Sikh identity and customs, Sikh wartime history, Indian film culture, and then into speculative futurism: Mars terraforming, the limits of giant climate projects, the Icon of the Seas as evidence of human scale, and a broader optimism about future abundance, AI, and automation. Key topics Jet lag, sleep loss, and travel recovery: Brian describes severe sleep disruption from illness and ADHD-related overstimulation. Later, the hosts discuss Apple possibly retiring the iTunes name, reflecting on how iTunes shifted from CD-ripping and downloads to a less central role in a streaming era. The episode also covers the Sam Bankman-Fried case and how its transcripts use coded or gamer-style language, which leads into a broader conversation about algorithmic moderation, euphemistic speech online, creator transparency, snoozing alarms, and the rediscovery of the silent film Sealed Hearts. Key topics UFOs as socially safe conversation: The hosts say UFOs/UAPs can be easier to discuss because they are not obviously tied to partisan politics, and Justin says he uses ghosts as a similarly low-stakes conversation starter. Moon landing conspiracy humor: Justin offers a joking hybrid theory that the moon landing happened but the return footage was faked because radiation ruined the film, while Andrew discusses how visual fakery can seem plausible. A large middle section covers the Mexico alien-body story, which the hosts conclude appears to be a hoax or paper-mache-style fabrication, followed by a discussion of how hoaxes and fake artifacts persist because people want to believe. The episode then shifts into practical topics: warning future people about nuclear waste, the history of Sudafed restrictions and the ineffectiveness of phenylephrine, stimulant use and drug policy, and finally a series of picks and a long appreciation of the first Superman films. The picks segment features enthusiastic recommendations for Baldur's Gate 3, The Road to Redonction, and Taskmaster. The episode ends with a nostalgic conversation about Christopher Reeve's Superman, the humor and pacing of the Donner-era films, and why Superman Returns felt dull by comparison. Key topics NASA UAP research appointment and media framing: The hosts discuss a reported NASA appointment related to UAP research, but repeatedly note that the headline may exaggerate the role. They settle on the idea that it may simply be a liaison between NASA and the Defense Department rather than somet
