A minha convidada de hoje sempre encontrou uma forma de se manter em movimento. Na infância, dividia o tempo entre a natação, a bicicleta, os patins e o futebol, esporte que aprendeu a gostar influenciada pelo pai. Aos 9 anos, descobriu o surf e passou a praticar bodyboarding. Na adolescência, experimentou diferentes modalidades, entre elas vôlei, handebol, capoeira, boxe e muay thai. Formou-se em Direito, construiu uma sólida carreira, casou-se, teve dois filhos e continuou surfando. Paralelamente, mantinha uma rotina ativa entre a natação e a academia. Nesse período, também passou por um divórcio e começou a correr. Em 2016, porém, uma fratura por estresse a levou para a bicicleta e, após a recuperação, decidiu experimentar o triathlon. Naquele mesmo ano, participou da sua primeira prova na modalidade. Em 2017, completou o Challenge Florianópolis, na distância de meio Ironman. Em 2018, casou-se com o treinador e triatleta Thiago Menuci, mesmo ano em que estreou no Ironman Brasil. Abriu-se então um caminho que a levaria para desafios até então inimagináveis. Voltou à Ilha da Magia no ano seguinte e, em 2020, completou o Soloman Full Distance. Durante a pandemia, colocou em xeque sua escolha profissional e, com a ajuda e o incentivo do marido, decidiu promover uma mudança importante na carreira. Ainda advogando, iniciou uma nova graduação, desta vez em Educação Física. Foi se envolvendo cada vez mais até que tomou a decisão de trabalhar na assessoria esportiva do marido e deixar a advocacia. Foi um caminho sem volta e, pensando na evolução da sua nova fase profissional, graduou-se também em Nutrição e, posteriormente, concluiu uma pós-graduação em Nutrição Esportiva. Após anos acompanhando o marido em provas de ultraendurance, construiu a autoconfiança necessária para direcionar sua atenção às provas de endurance extremo. Em 2022, participou do Canadaman. Em 2023, completou a Haute Route Pirineus já de olho no UB515 de 2024, ano em que participou também do Serranoman. No ano seguinte, participou do Norseman, uma das provas mais tradicionais do circuito mundial de triathlon extremo. Tonight's first guest, Kevin Frankenfield, is a hunting and fishing guide who had his Bigfoot sighting in Washington State, in November of 2023. When his sighting happened, he was working in the Deer Park Area. The morning his sighting happened, Kevin had woken up early, the way he normally does, and was on the phone with his girlfriend. When his dog woke up, instead of chomping at the bit to be let out, so he could run around Kevin's property, to see what he could get into, he jumped up on Kevin's bed and curled himself around Kevin's neck. That unusual behavior wasn't lost on Kevin. The next thing Kevin knew, his dog jumped off his bed, turned around, and hid under it. Not knowing what to make of his dog's strange behavior, Kevin started looking to see if anything unusual was going on outside. That's when…Tonight's second guest, James Braden, moved down to Ringgold, Georgia in the summer of 1999. Not long after moving into his new home, with his family, he heard a loud vocalization that couldn't be easily explained away. He wasn't the only one in the area who heard it. His neighbor heard the vocalization too. In fact, the vocalization was so loud, both James and his neighbor could actually feel it.Then, one day, in the Fall of 2000, James drove to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, to return some videos to Blockbuster, with his daughter. By the time they were on their way back home, a fog had rolled in, so James was being extra careful, because he was afraid a deer might jump out in front of his truck. Filho de argentinos, ele nasceu em Buenos Aires mas se mudou para o Rio de Janeiro ainda bebê. Aprendeu a andar de bicicleta bem cedo e nas viagens frequentes a Búzios com a família, costumava remar ou tentava velejar. Sua mãe era antropóloga, historiadora e mantinha um laboratório fotográfico em casa. Ainda criança, assistia às revelações de fotografias em preto e branco e fez suas primeiras fotos durante shows e atividades do dia a dia. Já morando em Sao Paulo, na adolescência passou a fotografar os amigos andando de skate. Sua primeira imagem publicada saiu na revista Yeah Skate. Mais tarde, ingressou no curso de Biologia da USP, mas interrompeu a graduação quando se mudou para os Estados Unidos. Durante os dois anos em que viveu por lá, adquiriu seus primeiros equipamentos profissionais, cobriu o Campeonato Mundial de Balonismo no Novo México, e começou a enviar fotografias para publicações brasileiras. De volta ao Brasil, participou da cobertura do Rock in Rio II. Uma das imagens produzidas durante o evento foi publicada na capa da revista Trip. A partir daí, passou a colaborar com diferentes veículos editoriais e direcionou seu trabalho para esportes, viagens, aventura e comportamento. Em 1995 e 1997, acompanhou uma equipe brasileira na Race Across America. Em 1998, cobriu uma das maiores corridas de aventura do mundo, o Raid Gauloises e o primeiro evento da modalidade no Brasil, a EMA. Ao longo dos anos seguintes, documentou campeonatos mundiais de triathlon, provas de corrida de aventura, mountain bike, rafting, dezenas de edições do Ironman Brasil e diversos outros eventos esportivos no Brasil e no exterior. Paralelamente ao trabalho editorial, realizou expedições próprias. Pedalou pelo Salar de Uyuni, desceu a Estrada da Morte na Bolívia, remou no Alasca, cruzou dunas do Saara em uma expedição de sandboard, participou de campanhas da Sea Shepherd na Antártida e no Canadá e realizou travessias de bicicleta e caiaque em diferentes regiões do continente americano. Ao longo de mais de três décadas de carreira, teve trabalhos publicados em jornais, revistas e livros no Brasil e no exterior. Expôs em cidades como Berlim, Innsbruck, Florença e Filadélfia. É autor dos livros Cruzando a América em Duas Rodas e Imagens de Uma Expedição, além de coautor de Graffiti Brasil. In July of 2018, tonight's guest, Mallory, and her boyfriend traveled to the Buffalo National River area in Arkansas to hike to a remote waterfall. Armed with a guidebook that explained how to reach it, they drove several miles down a gravel road to a secluded trailhead before setting out on foot. What was supposed to be a peaceful day in the woods quickly turned into something neither of them could have anticipated. Larry Fessenden’s The Last Winter (2006) BRRRRRR! It’s so cold outside! Wait, what? The thermometer reads 102? What’s the date? Ah, forget the date; this is a brain freeze for you because we decided to cool you off with some freezing cold horror films just in time for the summer heat wave! YES! Cold themes are the icy wet blanket that puts you at unease. Friend of the Podcast, Ian Parker joins the Scariest Things, as we put our parkas on for a discussion of some frozen horror treats. Enjoy! Think of this as mid-summer air conditioning by way of podcast. Granted, we considered this episode much earlier in the year, but with so many PHFF interviews, it got pushed further into the summer months! So, let this discussion help cool you with shivers down your spine! Themes of isolation, where the environment itself adds to the danger of just being outside, never mind the killer or monster waiting for you out there. It’s that extra addition that makes just getting around in a horror movie difficult. Almost every variant of horror is represented with the overlay of freezing temperatures. Serial Killer / Psychopath? Check. Vampires? Multiple times. Zombies? Uh huh. Aliens and monsters? Plenty of them. It’s freezing PLUS scary antagonist. Frozen horror is often a melancholy affair. With the exception of perhaps Werewolves Within, these movies tend to be quite serious. The colors are desaturated and high contrast. The music is often spare, with hints of wind blowing in the background. The other partner of ice-cold horror is darkness. Many times the location will be in fringe or polar latitudes, limiting the amount of daylight. Characters subjected to freezing to death are different than those burning up in the desert. This is still a constitution check, though It’s less about exhaustion and more about willpower. That, and there might be a vampire waiting for you. They seem to be OK with freezing temperatures. Also, if you are making this a theme within your movie, you will want to have plenty of the activity outside. There are films that use bad weather to limit the locations (Think Pontypool (2008) or Climax (2018)). For this episode, we want the characters to endure the cold. Get out there! Don’t be a sissy! Just keep moving. That’ll keep you warm. Foi na adolescência que ela descobriu os esportes. Mergulhou de cabeça no handebol e no basquete. Durante alguns anos, também se dedicou à dança e chegou a considerar seguir carreira como bailarina. Em 1998, mudou-se para Salvador para cursar a faculdade, afastando-se da vida esportiva. Anos mais tarde, em 2013, o jornalismo a levaria ao Rio de Janeiro, onde os esportes ao ar livre passaram a ocupar mais espaço em sua rotina. Em dezembro de 2020, em plena pandemia, decidiu ingressar no triathlon, mesmo sem saber nadar e praticamente sem experiência sobre uma bicicleta. A estreia aconteceu em 2021, no Capixaba de Ferro. Uma síncope durante o ciclismo, porém, impediu que completasse a prova. Já no ano seguinte, concluiu seu primeiro Ironman 70.3, no Rio de Janeiro. Em 2023, participou do seu primeiro Ironman, em Florianópolis, e conquistou uma vaga para disputar o Mundial no Havaí.
