Send us Fan MailWe go from hardheaded life advice to hot-button headlines, arguing through what freedom really looks like when the rules are confusing and the stakes are real. Then we get into community, empathy, and craft, ending with Big Lo breaking down how honest food reviews can build up small businesses and put people on to Charlotte. • setting the tone with raw hosting and guest shout-outs • refusing to let parents, partners, friends, or jobs control your choices • TSA guidance and why medical marijuana travel still feels risky • the federal vs state cannabis gap and why it confuses travelers • Michael Jackson's legacy and anger at profit-driven documentaries • Drake's three-album run, streaming numbers, and rap opinion wars • a viral restaurant dispute about buying food for someone outside • ethics of helping people in need vs a business protecting itself • “What would you do?” about daycare abuse and protecting children • legal accountability, cameras in schools, and avoiding added trauma • Words of the Week: infractuous, abstruse, redemancy • Big Lo on authenticity, respectful criticism, and Charlotte restaurant picks Go down to the comments and leave a comment Follow us on social media www.instagram.com/noadvisorypodcast
HBO Max is due to launch in New Zealand later this month, with the streamer revealing what Kiwis can expect to pay for the service. The service will have a launch price of $10.99 per month for the first six months of its standard plan, and $15.99 per month after that. Entertainment journalist and film reviewer Dominic Corry says Neon's HBO content was a big draw for subscribers, so it's unclear what will happen to the service going forward. "The disadvantage might be that Neon makes local stuff as well, so having those kinds of premium titles on Neon would help prop up some local content - but it's hard to picture HBO Max doing anything locally at this stage." The author of the government's review of youth inactivity has told the BBC that 25 times more is being spent on benefits for young people than schemes to get them into jobs. Alan Milburn - who was a Cabinet minister under Tony Blair - says it is "shameful" that nearly a million young people aren't in work or education, and called for a "complete" reset. Also: France has suspended the new EU border checks at the port of Dover after holidaymakers - trying to cross the Channel at the start of half term - were waiting in excess of four and a half hours. Fionnuala heads to Limerick for the Bank Holiday weekend… but the accommodation turns into a bit of a horror story.A “friendly” owner, a dog tied up outside, a weird laugh track looping behind a closed door, and a room that was meant to be en suite… except it absolutely wasn't. Add a musty hallway, towels left in the shared bathroom, and an unfrosted bathroom window, and you can see why she's rattled. The big question: do you leave a review and drop that 8.3 rating, or stay quiet?
Andy and Patrick might have to admit that ChatGPT is better at making lists than they are...

A huge show this week with both Steve "The Audiophiliac" Guttenberg and legendary speaker designer Andrew Jones. The Reviewer and the Designer was recorded live at AXPONA 2026 in Chicago this year. In a keynote session on Friday, The Occasional Podcast had a live audience for the first time. The three way banter was a great variation for the format, with some great conversations and educational bits alike. We pulled out some interesting stories from both Steve and Andrew, along with some unique perspectives on both measurements and design philosophy. Andrew's new speaker is the field-coil concentric Jones And Cerreta Troubador. And Steve Guttenberg has a new book coming out titled "The Blind Projectionist" but you can also follow his HiFi commentary on his regular YouTube channel "The Audiophiliac". You delegate something to your team, or explain a new project, and then… watch as it lands right back on your desk. Learning how to communicate your vision (for the business, a project or even a simple task) to your team (and have them take OWNERSHIP of it!) is one of the most common challenges small business owners face, no matter how long they've been in business. After years of leading teams and working closely with thousands of women business owners, Suzi Dafnis has come to understand that changes how your team responds to you: The problem doesn't lie within your vision… it lies in the translation. In this episode, Suzi shares a practical three-part framework that will help you communicate any project, task, or campaign to your team in a way that creates real ownership (instead of vacant stares and nodding). Here's What You'll Discover in the Episode: Why even capable, well-intentioned teams bring the work back to you (and what's actually causing their behaviour) The difference between explaining your vision and enrolling your team in it What actually creates real team accountability and ownership Why you should never, ever over-explain while briefing your team A three-part framework for how to communicate your vision to your team (that works for any project, campaign, or goal) Real examples of what effective team communication sounds like in practice Why a brief is one of the most underused leadership tools in small business (IF you do it right!) How to stop micromanaging by getting clear before the conversation starts What becomes possible for your business when your team is genuinely enrolled (and excited) with where the business is going Mentioned in This Episode: Apply to Join the HerBusiness Network Follow us on Instagram The Leaders' Table – A six-part leadership series Reviewer: Kim Linton, Jim's Bookkeeping, Ashburton

What does the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics really think about orthodontic AI, corporate orthodontics, and research bias? Dr. Neal Kravitz pulls no punches in this candid conversation with Dr. Leon Klempner and Amy Epstein. A practicing orthodontist, educator, and past AAO Technology Committee chair, Dr. Kravitz shares why evidence-based orthodontics still needs room for clinical judgment, why overtreatment is the specialty's quiet problem, and why young orthodontists have more reasons for optimism than anxiety. Honest, direct, and deeply practical. What You Will Learn In This Episode:How orthodontic AI is best used as a diagnostic and records automation tool rather than a replacement for clinical judgment, and why evidence-based orthodontics still requires the experienced eye of a trained specialist to catch what algorithms miss. Why research bias in orthodontic literature comes not only from industry-funded studies but also from reviewers and authors themselves, and how understanding this helps orthodontists read the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and other publications more critically. How the philosophy of conservative orthodontic treatment planning and doing less rather than more protects young patients from iatrogenesis, and why this principle should guide practitioners from their very first cases in private practice orthodontics.Subscribe to the Golden Age of Orthodontics and our sister podcast, Practice Talk, hosted by Lacie Ellis, wherever you listen to stay updated on orthodontic innovation and real-world practice strategies. Visit People and Practice for more insights and to connect with our team for practice growth solutions.TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 Introduction to orthodontic AI, corporate orthodontics, and specialty pressure with guest Dr. Neal Kravitz05:27 Dr. Kravitz explains how orthodontic AI supports diagnosis and records automation without replacing specialist judgment09:41 Discussion of underrepresented topics in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and what evidence-based orthodontics research needs more of14:29 Balancing evidence-based orthodontics with clinical experience and why residents need room to develop sound orthodontic treatment planning24:41 How research bias from companies, authors, and reviewers shapes what orthodontists read and how the JCO editor manages this challenge28:29 Advice for new graduates on private practice orthodontics, finding mentors, and navigating corporate orthodontics with confidenceKEY TAKEAWAYS: Orthodontic AI is a powerful adjunct tool for diagnostics and workflow automation. Still, it will not replace the clinical judgment that distinguishes a trained orthodontist from a general dentist who uses Invisalign treatment without oversight or expertise.Research bias is not limited to industry-sponsored studies. Reviewer bias and author bias are equally real, which means every orthodontist must approach the literature, including the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, with informed skepticism and critical thinking. The philosophy of doing less protects patients. Dr. Kravitz argues that overtreatment, not under-treatment, has driven his most regrettable cases, and that conservative orthodontic care built around humility and honest self-evaluation defines what ethical practice looks like across an entire career.ABOUT THE GUEST:Neal Kravitz, DMD, MS | Ashburn South Riding, VA OrthodontistRESOURCES MENTIONED:People + Practice - WebsitePractice TalkDr. Leon Klempner - People + Practice

The MacVoices panel continues their analysis of the MacBook Neo, pushing back against reviewers focused only on benchmarks rather than real-world usability. Chuck Joiner, David Ginsburg, Marty Jencius, Brian Flanigan-Arthurs, Jim Rea, Mark Fuccio, Web Bixby, and Eric Bolden discuss the machine's intended audience, its value as an affordable entry into the Mac ecosystem, and its potential impact in education and retail markets. The conversation also examines Apple's decision to remove a high-end Mac Studio configuration and what it might signal about supply constraints and product strategy. Kate Winslet is set to return to New Zealand shores for a new role in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is set to start production this year. Andy Serkis is set to reprise his role as Gollum and direct the movie, and Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are set to return too. Entertainment journalist and film reviewer Dominic Corry says there's clear demand for new Lord of the Rings content among film fans. "It still feels rather under-exploited, if that's a word we can use. And also, I still think there's a huge amount of goodwill on the audience's side for this franchise." David Golay shares why he hasn't jived with any of the eMTBs he's ridden so far, and if the new light-assist bikes from Orbea and Norco he's been spending time on might have a chance of changing his mind. Simon, on the other hand, is a big fan of eMTBs, regardless of whether they have a full-power or light-assist drive system, and has a couple of full-power beauties from Pivot and Norco to talk about. And to avoid a whole episode on bikes with motors, they throw the Atherton A.150.M in the mix, too.Note: We Want to Hear From You!Please let us know if there's a topic you'd like us to cover or a guest you'd like us to have on Bikes and Big Ideas. Is Your Brand Supporting Your Growth — or Slowing It Down? As your business grows, your brand needs to grow with it. But many small businesses operate under a brand created in the early days — when they were charging less, serving different clients, or still figuring out their positioning. And over time, that misalignment can quietly slow your growth. In this episode, I'm joined by Melissa Horvat, Founder of Graphika, a branding partner to professional service providers who want to build clear, compliant and credible brands that support long-term success. With nearly three decades of experience — working with organisations like Paralympics Australia, NSW and QLD Government, corporate clients and hundreds of small businesses — Melissa understands how to translate your expertise into a brand presence that builds trust and authority. In this conversation, we explore what branding really means for professional service providers — and how to ensure your brand reflects the level of business you're building now, not the one you started with. If you're serious about sustainable growth, this episode will help you assess whether your brand is an asset… or a limitation. Here's What We Cover in This Episode: The subtle signs your brand is out of alignment with the level of business you're operating at now Why professional service providers need more than a "nice logo" to build authority and trust How a clear and credible brand shortens the sales cycle and attracts better-fit clients The role compliance and professionalism play in building confidence with high-value clients What happens behind the scenes when your visual identity doesn't match your expertise Practical first steps to elevate your brand without overcomplicating the process Branding isn't about making your business look bigger than it is. It's about making sure your brand accurately reflects the quality, expertise and experience you bring — so the right clients recognise your value immediately. If you've been feeling like your business has evolved… but your brand hasn't caught up, this conversation will give you clarity on what to do next. Watch the video version here.Bo welcomes back John from UnPack'D to discuss how his popular YouTube channel has grown, the evolution of his content creation, and how his perspective on gear has shifted after reviewing dozens of bags. John shares the two most memorable bags he's tested (the unique Embarro and the leather Grams28), including a deep dive into the practicalities of caring for leather in extreme weather. The conversation then explores John's philosophy of reviewing, which focuses on understanding the designer's intent, and how that has forced him to constantly change his own EDC loadout. He also reveals the shocking weight of his daily carry (over 23 pounds!) for his 2-mile walking commute and offers his thoughts on the rise of budget brands like Tomtoc and the latest gear he is excited to test. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 Intro 0:30 - Welcome Back John from UnPack'D: Channel Growth & Going from Phone to Camera 3:38 - The Reality of Filming Outdoors (DJI Pocket 3) 4:40 - Memorable Bags of the Year: Grams28 and Embarro 8:28 - The Dilemma of Leather in Bag Carry and Weather Resistance 12:09 - The Amazing Look of the X-Pac Rover Collection 14:30 - How Reviewing Bags Changed John's Perspective 17:52 - Finding the Designer's Intent in Every Bag 20:07 - Why John Changes His Packing Style for Every Review 22:55 - John's Daily Loadout: The 23-Pound Commute 26:26 - EDC on Days Off: The Perfect Dog Owner's Sling Bag 28:55 - What's Next for Review: Grams28 and King Kong Core 30:25 - Is the King Kong Core Backpack a Bag Nerd's Gym Bag? 36:18 - Thoughts on Tom Bihn and the Tomtoc "Disruptor" 52:20 - GORUCK's Future Focus: Rucking vs. Stealth Carry
Monday will be better than Sunday for the Chiefs as the state of Kansas is set to announce somewhere between $2-$3 billion will be given to ownership to build a new stadium, offices and practice facilities. This the beginning of the end of the Truman Sports Complex. The team is absolutely embarrassed on the field against he lowly Titans Sunday. I can't remember anything this ugly. The college football playoff got it's first road team winners ever this weekend but the other two games are not even worthy of watching. This system has a big flaw.
