109 Alexey Vermeulen & Lani Benson Talk Gravel Gear Up

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2025 64:26

Hey BikeRumor Fans - Welcome to Episode 109!  Ep - 109: Gravel, gear, and getting to the start line. Jordan sits down with professional gravel race extraordinaire Alexey Vermeulen and Pearl Izumi product line manager Lani Benson. They unpack how gravel gear (especially kit and outerwear) has evolved along with the sport's progression. But thats just the tip of the iceberg. It's not all gear and geeking out. However, the conversation moves into the "real meaning" of gravel. Why would someone subject themselves to a grueling (yet fun) 10-hour day on the bike? Importantly, how that day on the bike might not vibe with the most obvious gear choice. For example, the super lightweight stiff-soled gear the professionals are racing might not be the best for you.  The group discusses their favorite pieces of gravel (and all-around kit) from the newest Pearl Izumi offerings and Alexey's never-ending love for the Attak Barrier jacket. Will Pearl Izumi possibly return to higher footwear? Their newest offering, the Expedition Pro shoes, looks promising, but they need that extra push—and that could be coming.  Lastly, it wouldn't be a podcast with Alexey if we didn't discuss the dog in the room: Willy. We talk about how he became so comfortable on the bike and how he (Willy) trains. What's the longest ride Willy does? Listen to find out!  Check out all the gear and more at PearlIzumi.com. 103 - A Guide to Practical Gravel Race Fueling

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2024 81:07

Podcast Episode 103: A Guide to Practical Gravel Race Fueling We'll be the first to admit it: Fueling for long events is challenging, especially if you don't have a game plan or it's your first event. With the rise of longer and more intense gravel races and events, proper fueling is more critical than ever. A Guide to Gravel Race Fueling This conversation isn't just for first-timers or elite gravel grinders; it's for everyone. I've often gotten my fueling strategy wrong, and I still do sometimes (and I've been at this for years).  Whether it was not eating enough, not eating the right food, or the dreaded “I'll eat later” followed by a dreaded BONK and vision quest for the finish line. We can all work on our fueling for training and racing, no matter how many races we have under our belt.  For BikeRumor Podcast Episode 103, I sat down with the Fuel Good Nutrition (formerly Rider Box) team to dispel fueling myths and clarify what a race nutrition plan can look like.  So, should I eat as many gels as I can? No, this isn't a laundry list of 20 gels and 50 blocks for over 250k of racing. It's a real-food and practical look at what riders can do (and stomach) to achieve the most from their training. From Training to Race Day We discuss what a fueling plan looks like from the very start. We  look at the week leading up to the big event (gravel race in our scenario) and forward from there. We are tackling not only what but also how to get in the correct amount of carbs and other fuels to stay robust and fresh over your ride.  After the race, you need to replenish, recover, and rebuild. We discuss re-fueling, recovery meals, drinks, and strategies so you can be stronger in the next race. While at the launch for the new Fox GRIP dampers, I pretty much had my brain melted by VP of engineering Bill Brown as he explained their inner workings. The level of fluid dynamics and engineering discussed is still well above my pay grade, but I think we do a pretty good of of explaining how the new dampers are able to simultaneously offer more support and be more sensitive to small bumps. It's all about pressure balancing, and we go deep on it. If you've always run your suspension wide open so it's as comfortable as possible, you may want to listen in. So, apparently, not every cheap e-bike sucks after all. Until recently I was firmly in the camp that cheap, hub-motor e-bikes with cadence sensors were all terrible and unsafe. Then I talked to Kevin Dugger, founder of Ride1Up e-bikes, and he changed my mind. It's not so much the bikes that bugged me, although we'll talk about that, too, it was the cadence sensors that told the motor to start going. It turns out, there's a lot more to the "on" of "off" systems of the early days or the cheapest bikes. Also, it turns out there are also some really good use cases for hub motors and cadence sensors, and that their performance, or lack thereof, really comes down to how their controllers are programmed. Kevin and I get into the details of what makes a good cadence sensor system, when you might want one instead of a torque sensor mid-drive bike, and lots of other interesting details about making e-bikes affordable without sacrificing quality and safety. If you're in the market for an e-bike but have a small budget, you'll definitely want to listen to this one. Besides the warm fuzzies, there's often good money and resources available to help make it happen, too! My guests today are Nick Bennett and Greg Durso, two of the riders and trail builders leading Vermont's charge to make more of their hundreds of miles of singletrack accessible to adaptive riders. I've ridden some of these trails, and they're awesome. But what makes them super rad is that every rider can enjoy them, and trust me, they are not watered down in any way. 070 - Exept's custom monocoque tech could change the industry

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2022 47:36

A few years ago, I met an Italian upstart custom carbon bike brand at Eurobike called Exept. They were doing something unique, and the bikes looked killer. So, I went to visit them and came home with a bike that I'm still riding today. Their office was small, doubling as an assembly point and showroom, with manufacturing done offsite. The appearance of a small, scrappy group of bike geeks was hiding much bigger ambitions, and this little company is poised to change the concept of a high end road bike thanks to a patented process that allows full custom, full monocoque carbon fiber frames to be made at scale. But getting from startup to major industry supplier hasn't been easy. Here's the story of how Exept launched, survived the pandemic's brutal effects on their core business, and is now building large-scale manufacturing capabilities for the entire cycling industry. If things go well, your next big brand dream bike could be full custom, too. WANT MORE? As a brand, there are few that have created such iconic products as Crank Brothers, and have weathered the ups and downs of both market conditions and brand reputation. But now, in 2022, they're celebrating 25 years in business. So, I sat down with CEO Gaspare Licata to talk about how the company got here, how they turned things around in the mid-2010s, how some of their more recent products came about, and where they're headed in the future. If you're a fan of the brand, as I am, or just geek out on how the bike industry and product design works, you're going to love this very candid interview. WANT MORE? It may surprise you to learn that the SRAM UDH, or Universal Derailleur Hanger, is half plastic. When we learned that it used mixed materials, I wondered what else we didn't know about this now nearly ubiquitous mountain bike component. So I called up SRAM MTB marketing manager Chris Mandell to learn more, and it's surprising just how much there is to know about this tiny part. This is my first "What's up with..." episode, a new format where I'll be exploring parts and technologies that most of us ride every day but have secrets to tell. WANT MORE? The Tour of Luxembourg is a relatively small multi-day race on the World Tour calendar, but it attracts some big teams. That combination made it the perfect test bed for measuring the environmental impact of a professional cycling race. Which is more complex than it sounds. From hotel rooms to travel, volunteers to food service, course marking to start/finish staging, there's a LOT that goes into a major event like this. I spoke with Tour de Lux president Andy Schleck and nZero founder Adam Kramer to see just how they went about doing it, what they learned, and how events and teams can improve. There's even lessons for all of us on how we can improve our own habits and actions, and as always, there's a lot more to this than meets the eye. WANT MORE? 061 - How Radial Compression works in bicycle wheels

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2022 23:17

Ever wondered what "radial compliance" is in a bicycle wheel? On this episode, I'm kicking off a mini-series around technologies, products, and designs that are either misunderstood or often tossed into product launch stories without good explanations. My first topic is radial compliance, which is when a bicycle wheel is able to deform in the vertical plane as you hit a bump or land a drop. It's not nearly as well known as lateral stiffness, which is a wheel's lack of flex from side to side under cornering loads, or even torsional stiffness, which is the wind up a wheel can get under a really hard sprint. To be fair, lateral stiffness is the one you're going to notice the most, but radial compliance has a lot to do with how smooth a wheel feels over varied terrain.   My guest is Chris Murray, owner of Elevation Wheel Company. Chris has been building custom wheels for customers, shops, and industry folks for more than a decade, then launched Elevation in 2017. He started doing it in a shop, then built production wheels for Borealis before busting out on his own. He's now built with most major rim, spoke and hub brands, and he not only shares what it means, but we discuss: What is radial compliance in a bicycle wheel? Which part of the wheel has the most effect on radial compliance? Which rim materials and designs are most compliant? How do spoke type and count affect radial compliance? How can you tune your own wheels' radial compliance? We talk about a few specific products and in broader terms, giving you the intel you need to decipher marketing speak and understand how different wheel designs and builds affect your ride quality.   FOLLOW BIKERUMOR Keep tabs on all the latest bikes, wheels, components, gear and tech on The World's Largest Cycling Tech Blog by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
