NEW SERIES ON JEWISH HISTORY SOUNDBITES On June 30, 1944, a train departed Budapest, Hungary, carrying 1,684 Jews as its passengers. This occurred during the peak of the Nazi deportations of Hungarian Jewry to Auschwitz in the horrific summer of 1944. This particular trainload however, following a short stint in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, was permitted to cross the border into Switzerland and freedom. The entire project was orchestrated through direct negotiations with the SS through the efforts of a young Zionist leader in Budapest named Rudolf Kastner. Though the lives of those on the train were saved, the entire operation was deemed controversial due to the fact that Kastner chose not to spread the word of the impending deportations among the wider masses of Hungarian Jewry. This resulted in an even more controversial courtroom drama in the 1950's in Jerusalem, in a trial erroneously known to history as the Kastner trial. This multi part series now being launched on Jewish History Soundbites podcast will examine the story of the negotiations, rescue, aftermath, trial and legacy. It will attempt to provide a historical context as it was understood by the diverse array of characters involved in the narrative at the time. Americká zpravodajka Jana Ciglerová přijela do Prahy pokřtít svou novou knihu Americký deník: Všechno je jinak. Při této příležitosti jsme zaplnili Rock Café na živém natáčení Studia N. Poslechněte si záznam a nechte se vtáhnout do reality dnešních Spojených států. Za dobu, co je Jana Ciglerová v Americe, sledovala obrovskou změnu téměř ve všem – v politice, společnosti, kultuře, ekonomice i mezilidských vztazích. „Lidé jsou naštvaní jako nikdy dřív. Nikdy v historii se neodehrály tak masivní protesty jako nyní proti Trumpovi,“ říká. Strach ve společnosti jde podle ní cítit v každodenním životě. „Řidič autobusu mi říkal, že dostali pokyn, že když někdo nechce zaplatit, mají to nechat být. Je to podle jeho slov bezpečnější, než kdyby se někdo naštval a zaútočil na něj nebo ho zastřelil,“ popisuje Ciglerová. Problém podle ní spočívá ve snadném přístupu ke zbraním. „Zbraně mezi lidmi bezpečí nepřinášejí. Je to naopak. Čím snadnější je k nim přístup, tím víc lidí je má. Zatímco u nás do někoho v naštvání strčíte nebo na něj zakřičíte, v Americe na sebe lidi rovnou vytáhnou bambitku. Stojíte ve frontě v obchodě, dojde k hádce a opakovaně se stává, že na sebe vytáhnou zbraň,“ vysvětluje. Ve Studiu N vypráví, v čem se liší její život v USA a v Česku. „Večer tam svoje děti nepustím ven. Když jsem vyprávěla svým americkým přátelům, že se můj syn vracel o půlnoci z Vltavské domů, což je asi kilometr, nevěřícně na mě zírali. Moje kamarádka Nancy zase málem odpadla, když jsem jí natočila video, jak kluci nasedají do vlaku v Řevnicích a sami odjíždějí. To je v dnešní Americe nepředstavitelné,“ doplňuje autorka knihy. Byli i tací, co tu odvahu měli, já ne,“ vzpomíná. V rozhovoru říká, že je pro ni důležité, aby byla v rovnováze sama se sebou a se svým svědomím. „Nejsem ze sebe nadšená, protože jsem tomu napomáhala. Neměla jsem odvahu říct: Proboha, proč máme hrát Kremelský orloj? Umění bylo a svým způsobem je i dnes služkou mocných. Dříve to byly tlaky ideologické, dnes jsou to tlaky ekonomické,“ tvrdí.
