Kristin and Leigh sit down with Gwen Hendee, a yoga instructor and nurse who has also studied various forms of healing arts. We discuss the importance of "making space" within yourself in order to be successful on your remake journey. Women too often are holding space for others, carrying the emotions of others, bearing the physical burden of motherhood or caretaking, as well as the social and cultural expectations for who we should be. This doesn't leave much room for ourselves. How do we make that space? In an interesting twist of mindset, we ask the question "What do You Want to Keep?" This causes you to think of what's important to you and what you want for yourself, instead of its twin-- "What should I get rid of?" This question applies to anything that's filling up your mind or life. Emotions, thoughts, relationships, everything. You find that you begin to focus on the most important thoughts, emotions, and relationships, and how to keep them close. In this episode, I decided I'd get a little silly and see what it would be like if I were interviewed by Oprah! I had a blast answering questions that Oprah asked in one of her interviews on Super Soul Sunday. Listen in to hear how I answer! In this episode, I share more deeply on what it means to live a spacious life. I attempt to paint a picture of how it feels to have more space internally and externally as well as how it feels to live a life that is NOT spacious and then ask you to see where you currently fit on that continuum. I share some examples of what living spaciously looks like in my life and how I arrived there. Lastly, I give you some thoughtful questions to help you as you reflect on where you are at with spaciousness and challenge you to consciously create more space in one aspect of your life. In today’s episode, I wrap up our community ‘book of the month’ reading of Brene’ Brown’s book titled “The Gifts of Imperfection”. I share some things that jumped out at me, pushed me, stretched me and drew me deeper into my own truth. I was surprised and encouraged to find that much of what she covers in her book on learning to live wholeheartedly runs parallel to what I talk about when I suggest living a more spacious life. I found this book to be a perfect companion to what I am striving for in my life and at the end I share with you the action steps I am taking as a result of what I learned from the research and stories she shares between the covers of this book. I also challenge you to take action and make a shift in one thing in your life as a result of reading it. Join me now as we begin to create space... Zen for Everyday Life with Matt Valentine: Mindfulness | Guided Meditation - Buddhaimonia
This is meditation week on the ZfEL podcast. I've really enjoyed recording both this week's full episode and guided meditation episode and I hope you get a lot out of them. Today I'm covering zazen, the Zen practice of sitting meditation. This is the basic meditation form I typically write about on the blog being that I essentially "grew up" in Zen. At its heart, it's just a simple mindfulness of breath meditation. If you're new to meditation, know that zazen is a great beginner practice for this very reason. It's what I practice each and every day. Also, don't forget to check out this week's episode #8: How to Create a Home Meditation Practice which this guided meditation serves as an accompaniment to. Thank you for listening & let me know what you think. Thank you for listening. Zen for Everyday Life with Matt Valentine: Mindfulness | Guided Meditation - Buddhaimonia
This is meditation week on the ZfEL podcast. Today I cover everything you need to know to create your home meditation practice including the 5 steps to making meditation a daily habit and the 5 major resources you should utilize to do so. Meditation is the foundation of a strong daily mindfulness practice and it's the first of the 7 keys I covered in last week's episode How to Make Mindfulness a Way of Life for that very reason, so I'm excited to cover it this week on the podcast. To go along with episode #8, episode #9 and this week's guided meditation (if you haven't heard about the second weekly ZfEL segment yet, read here) is zazen, or the Zen practice of sitting meditation (mindfulness meditation). My hope is that this week serves you and others as a complete audio resource for beginning your home meditation practice. Thank you for listening & let me know what you think.
