Comedian Cristela Alonzo joins Sam to talk about her new Netflix special Upper Classy, and how before her career took off she made the life-changing decision to leave LA to become her mom’s full-time end of life caretaker. She explains that she started standup as a way of dealing with the grief of losing her mom, and how she didn’t even know it could be a real job before then. Cristela talks about how when you grow up below the poverty line you learn that part of privilege is having the power to get people’s attention and how you might as well make the decision you’re faced with because tomorrow is coming either way. They gush over a shared love of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and “very special episodes” and learning to ride bikes later in life, and why it’s never too late to learn to experience joy. Now that the government shutdown is over, Congress will need to figure out what to do about an impending spike in health insurance premiums for Americans (including tens of thousands of North Dakotans) who purchase individual plans through the Affordable Care Act exchanges. Those premiums currently enjoy heavy subsidies that are set to expire at the end of the year unless Congress renews them, which would mean dramatic cost increases for the insured. On the other side of that coin is that years of fiscal profligacy, which has become particularly acute under the terms of Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, has left our nation with little capacity to continue them. We are already $38 trillion in debt, and adding a couple of trillion dollars more every year. But the debate over the subsidies is beside the point Marvin Lein said on this episode of Plain Talk. Lein is a retired healthcare professional with 30 years of senior healthcare administrative and CEO experience, including managing large multi-entity, private, for-profit physician practices. He served as CEO of Mid Dakota Clinic in Bismarck from 2013 to 2022. According to him, moving Americans to a single-payer system for delivering health care is the only sustainable path forward. "We've run the current model, the free market model, to the point where we can no longer bury, redistribute, hide systemwide costs," he said, and while we can have a debate about whether the status quo, where most Americans get their health insurance through a third party, is truly a "free market," he has a point. He recalled that when he started in 1994, the industry reacted strongly to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services setting price controls, fearing it would be "socialized healthcare" and "the end of healthcare." "Well, that didn't happen," he said, arguing that a Medicare-for-all plan could bring spiking prices under control. "Medicare is price setting. Medicare is managed delivery. Right? Medicare is much more like the European model than the insurance products that you and I purchase on the commercial marketplace. which is the old model that is failing has failed." Also on this episode, guest co-host Pat Finken and I discussed my story about a stalker in North Dakota's state house and the City of Fargo's ongoing efforts to annex a proposed AI data center despite objections from just about everybody else. Chamberlain has finished Outer Worlds 2 and is reasonably pleased with it. It's no Avowed, but it scratched an itch, mostly because there were 20 points invested in guns. He also tried Bloodlines 2 so that you don't have to (and you shouldn't). And Chance was so stung by his buggy experience with Outer Worlds 2 that he retreated all the way back to Fallout 4 and will not return until his gauss rifle wielding smooth talker rules the wasteland.
This is the ninth episode of Overcoming Polarisation: Paths to Common Ground, a podcast series from Debating Europe, Friends of Europe's citizen engagement unit. Europe is feeling fractured. Whether it's politics, climate, tech, or trust in institutions, more and more people are feeling left out, unheard, and uncertain about the future. But what if we could flip the script? What if instead of fuelling division, we looked for common ground? In this series, we're diving into the real issues behind polarisation. Economic inequality, climate anxiety, digital disruption, and bringing together voices from across the spectrum. From policymakers, activists, business leaders, and most importantly, citizens' voices via our latest study “Voices for Choices”. In today's show, host Sabina Șancu spoke with MEP Lena Schilling about her agenda for COP30 and her fight to protect the Green Deal. Schilling, the youngest MEP in this mandate, also talks about how youth voices can best be represented at the highest levels of decision-making. In the second part of the episode, Paul Watkinson, former climate negotiator, explains how COP negotiations actually happen and unravels the layers of participants around the decision-making core. In this episode, we're talking about one of the most powerful tools you already have but probably aren't using enough: redeciding.Redeciding is the moment you pause, question the default, and choose again—on purpose. It's how you reinvent yourself, your parenting, your routines, and your reactions… without blowing up your whole life.I share a few recent moments that pushed me to look at my old stories (like “I'm bad at tech” or “I can't learn new things”) and what changed when I stopped believing them. This is the work we do in CMP: noticing the patterns that keep us stuck and choosing something better. In this episode:Why you're allowed to start over anytimeHow tiny decisions create massive reinventionThe stories we inherit—and how to let them goWhat to do when you feel stuck in old parenting habitsHow to redesign your relationship with each childWhy failures are evidence of growth, not proof of inadequacyYou're not stuck. You're just one redecision away from a different outcome.Let's make the last two months of the year the best ones yet.Go connect with your kids. And let's reinvent together.

Medicare complexity unraveled; Wisconsin Senior Medicare Patrol Program Director Ingrid Kundinger joins Jane for a discussion. She separates the essentials of traditional Medicare from privatized Medicare Advantage plans. While original Medicare offers broad coverage, it lacks certain benefits like vision and dental care, often necessitating supplemental policies. Medicare Advantage can fill these gaps but comes with its own pitfalls, like network restrictions and unexpected costs. With open enrollment in full swing, Kundinger warns of high-pressure sales tactics and emphasizes informed decision-making to avoid getting trapped in unsuitable plans. This sermon, The Way You Live, reveals how Abraham’s lifestyle choices affected generations. Pastor Rick teaches that the way we live — our habits, conflicts, and worship patterns — not only determines our peace today but also shapes the legacy we leave tomorrow.
A person's wisdom brightens their face and changes its hard appearance. Do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Ryan launches a multi-part series, Twisted Passions, addressing homosexuality and same-sex attraction from a biblical framework. He establishes why pastors should clearly preach what Scripture says while also equipping the church to counsel and care for strugglers, and he outlines upcoming topics: Is this sin “different,” are people “born this way,” and how do we raise kids in a sexualized culture? The aim is clarity, compassion, and confident hope in Christ for real victory.Topics DiscussedWhy churches must preach plainly on homosexuality (OT & NT texts)Common progressive rebuttals and why they don't hold up biblically (e.g., “love = affirmation,” misuse of John 8)Word study: ἀρσενοκοίτης and Paul's clarity in 1 Cor 6 / 1 Tim 1Beyond the pulpit: moving from denunciation to discipleship and counseling in the local churchShepherding kids in a perverted culture; building a proactive family planInviting listener questions/testimonies for future episodesKey TakeawaysScripture speaks clearly; pastors should, too—without hatred or compromise.“Love the sinner; hate the sin” isn't a cliché—Jesus says, “Go and sin no more.”Paul's terminology intentionally names male-with-male practice; it isn't vague.Churches must pair clear preaching with hands-on help for real people.Parents need an intentional, early plan to disciple children amid cultural lies.Ready to download the Cord App? A talk by Thanissaro Bhikkhu entitled "Choices"
On this episode of Trending in Education, host Mike Palmer welcomes Liz Cohen, Vice President of Policy at 50CAN and author of the new book, The Future of Tutoring: Lessons from 10,000 School District Tutoring Initiatives. We explore the massive, rapid mobilization of tutoring efforts in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated learning disruptions. We look at the key components of effective high-impact tutoring—small groups, consistent adults, and regularly scheduled in the school day—and how the strong evidence base has galvanized educators and advocates toward a unified solution. Liz shares her "constellation" metaphor, distinguishing between "bright stars" (districts deeply committed to sustained funding and implementation) and those still struggling with scale, funding, and strategy. Beyond the academic gains, we discuss the powerful role of tutoring as a catalyst for human connection and a potential pipeline for new educators. We also debate the future scenarios for tutoring, including the role of AI tools, outcomes-based contracting for responsible spending, and how this moment of change proves the public education system is capable of renovation. Key Takeaways: The High-Impact Tutoring Surge: About 80% of U.S. school districts launched some form of tutoring post-pandemic, with two-thirds aiming for high-impact models: small groups, in-school, at least three times a week, and led by a consistent adult. A Unified Solution: The convergence of a clear problem (learning disruption), evidence-based research (like the Saga program's impact on Algebra I scores), and massive federal funding created a rare moment of unity in education reform. More Than Academics: The success of tutoring is deeply rooted in human relationships; it helps young people feel they "matter," building motivation through demonstrated competence and productive struggle in a high-support, high-standards environment. The Future Workforce Pipeline: Tutoring roles, especially those engaging college students and young adults, are proving to be effective on-ramps into the teaching profession. The Funding Cliffhanger: With one-time federal funding largely spent, the future depends on districts embedding tutoring into their core strategy and utilizing tools like outcomes-based contracting to ensure they only pay for measurable results. Why You Should Listen: If you are a district leader, educator, education advocate, or parent, this episode offers a clear-eyed view of what the most successful districts are doing to accelerate learning and how they are planning to sustain those efforts. In a heartfelt conversation that blends personal vulnerability with practical wisdom, Joyce Kelly, an 81-year-old retiree from Silver Spring, Maryland, shares her unconventional approach to one of life's most daunting transitions: planning for aging. Hosted by Steve Gurney, founder and publisher of the Positive Aging SourceBook, the discussion reveals how Joyce turned her solo quest for a life plan community into a communal adventure. What started as a quiet exploration has inspired dozens of friends, neighbors, and even strangers to confront their fears about growing older—not alone, but together.Group Power: Turning Solo Tours into Social SafarisThe catalyst was simple—a mention at her monthly women's group of Public Health Service retirees, a circle she's belonged to for over 30 years. When Joyce shared plans to attend an open house at a nearby life plan community, her friends' response surprised her: "Every woman said they wanted to join me." What she intended as a solo reconnaissance became a group outing. Over six months, Joyce and at least three companions attended open houses at eight communities within 20 miles of her home. These visits were possible because life plan communities across the county offer frequent open houses; no organizing required—just show up and learn, often with resident “ambassadors” who share unfiltered insights. The Living Room Summit: A Panel of Peers, Not PitchmenThe "working session" in Joyce's homeJoyce's boldest move? Hosting a "working session" in her home on healthy aging in place versus community living. Drawing from her women's group of former Public Health Service colleagues, two neighborhood book clubs, longtime friends and neighbors, and a local listserv, she invited 55 people. Forty showed up with furniture cleared to make room for folding chairs in her living and dining rooms.Gurney's college analogy fits perfectly: Choosing a life plan community is like picking your next school—a large university's vast resources or a small liberal arts college's intimate vibe? "You don't get that inter-community opportunity" elsewhere, he marvels. Joyce's accidental "summit" bridged the gap, helping attendees "soak it up" without pressure. The Realities: Costs, Waitlists, and Solo StrugglesAmid the inspiration, hard truths emerge. Life plan communities are "extremely expensive," Joyce warns. Selling their Silver Spring home would cover an entrance fee, but monthly costs hover in the thousands—less for studios, but Paul balks at drastic downsizing. Younger friends worry for widowed mothers with limited means; even pooled family resources often fall short. The Sourcebook, Joyce adds, shines here, spotlighting affordable aging-in-place alternatives. For singles—about 25% of Joyce's close circle—the hurdle is emotional: Uprooting a cherished townhouse alone at 80 feels "overwhelming." "When they moved in, they were in their thirties," she notes. Joyce now scouts tailored fits—a low-walk community for one friend, high-culture options for another, Rockville-specific spots for a third—offering to join tours as a buffer.Don't Delay: The Universal Call to ActionAcross eight visits (one community, seven times), Joyce has chatted with over 100 residents. Their mantra? "Don't delay. Move now." Gardens, gyms, musicals—they thrive when you're "young enough and energetic enough." No regrets for moving "too soon," only warnings against waiting for a health crisis. For Joyce, this heightens tension with Paul: "I'm 81—how much longer do I want to risk it?" But her process replaces paralysis with possibility. "All of this—the meetings, the visits, reading resources—provides opportunities to replace fear with curiosity," she says. It's not about an "old age home" as a final stop; it's owning your path. For now, her revolution ripples: A reminder that aging isn't a solo slog. Grab a friend, a book club, or a neighbor. Fear fades when curiosity leads the way.

This message from Genesis 13-14 explores how Abraham models faith through wise choices, generosity, and dependence on God rather than what he can see in front of him, while Lot's self-centered decisions lead to spiritual compromise and captivity. Through Abraham's example, we learn that faith involves trusting God's promises, pursuing peace, taking the “lesser land,” and living with integrity in every circumstance.

It's Halloween on Delusional Diaries… which means cheap wigs, chaos, and way too many confessions. Halley and Jaz kick off the episode dressed as the Timothée Chalamet x Pete Davidson SNL duo, spiraling about bedside manner, Yelp reviews, and why bad Amazon wigs might actually be a cursed tradition at this point. From Jaz's Bottega meltdown in Madrid (and the boldest “move forward” gaslight ever) to Halley's questionable life choices that somehow always work out in her favor, the girls are in their unfiltered storytelling era. They're talking eating dog treats out of desperation, blocking trolls with “almond daughter” usernames, and why sharing snacks with your boyfriend should be considered psychological warfare. Then it's Halloween nostalgia, space cowgirl flashbacks, and a few hot takes about certain activities in the shower, bad costumes, and the “stay in for your future husband” pick-me epidemic. Whether you're getting ready to go out tonight or staying in with a bottle of wine, this episode will have you laughing, cringing, and texting your best friend mid-listen.Timestamps 0:20 - Happy Halloween from yours truly 4:02 - Bitching hour 11:40 - Standing 10 toes down 22:13 - Jaz's limo and birthdays27:26 - The block of the week 33:16 - Reading and other hobbies 37:40 - All things Halloween 48:27 - The Halloween party LinksWayfair: wayfair.com See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
