This episode explores how young adults can define themselves through challenges by focusing on present-moment living rather than future anxiety. David and Caleb share personal experiences from running marathons and hiking the Appalachian Trail, emphasizing that success comes from daily consistency and giving your all to each moment while maintaining future vision. They discuss how genuine faith requires both relationship with God and active participation, with responsibility and work ethic flowing naturally from that connection. The key insight is that God is present in every moment of the journey, not just waiting at the destination, and that who we become is shaped by how fully we engage with each day rather than fixating on distant goals. Introduction and Topic Setup (00:00:00) - The hosts introduce the episode with Caleb and David, noting Tommy's absence in Germany and Jason dealing with COVID. They set up the main topic: how to define ourselves through challenges we face or choose, using the metaphor of "cutting" in weightlifting to reveal underlying muscle definition. David on Living in the Present vs. Future Anxiety (00:04:16) - David discusses his shift from constantly stressing about the future to finding contentment in the present moment. He shares insights from reading Tesla's biography and emphasizes the importance of praying for peace rather than solutions, doing your best in current situations rather than being consumed by anxiety about what's ahead. The Importance of Enjoying the Process (00:10:32) - The discussion explores how successful athletes and individuals find fulfillment in the daily process rather than just the end goal. The conversation emphasizes that enjoying each moment prevents the feeling of wasted time if the expected outcome isn't achieved. Caleb on Daily Consistency Over Distant Goals (00:10:32) - Caleb shares his experience from the Appalachian Trail and job hunting, explaining how focusing on "what can I do today" rather than the overwhelming distant goal made success possible. He emphasizes that consistency in daily actions over time leads to achieving bigger goals. Prophetic Words and Future Planning (00:17:00) - The hosts discuss how prophetic words about the future affect young people's motivation and planning. Both David and Caleb express that while having future vision is important, it must be paired with present action and responsibility rather than passive waiting. The Relationship Between Faith and Work (00:27:42) - The conversation addresses how Christianity requires both relationship with God and active participation. They discuss how genuine faith naturally produces a desire to give yourself fully to the journey, not just hoping for future outcomes without present engagement. Taking Responsibility and Ownership (00:31:02) - David and Caleb explain how they developed their work ethic and sense of responsibility. David discusses storing treasures in heaven and mind transformation, while Caleb reflects on Job 38:3 ("Brace yourself like a man") as a call to take responsibility with love rather than fear. Defining Yourself Through Present Actions (00:39:36) - The host recaps how living fully in the moment while maintaining future goals helps eliminate past baggage and builds value for the future. They discuss how giving yourself fully to the present moment naturally leads to financial and personal success. Final Thoughts: God in the Present Moment (00:42:08) - Caleb shares a powerful realization from the Appalachian Trail: God wasn't waiting for him on the last mountain but was with him every step of the journey. David summarizes by encouraging contentment in the moment and living each day to its fullest potential. X @mission300_

Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man; they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.” Luke 17:26–27As we enter into the final weeks of the liturgical year, we begin to turn our attention to the final coming of Christ. In today's Gospel, Jesus gives us the example of Noah and Lot. In both of their stories, people were eating, drinking, marrying, buying, selling, planting and building up, until the very day that the floods came to destroy the earth at the time of Noah and fire rained down from the sky at the time of Lot. Both Noah and Lot were saved, but many others alive at that time met with sudden and unexpected destruction.Jesus says that the “days of the Son of Man” will be similar to these previous two events. At an unexpected time, Jesus will return to earth, and the Final Judgment will ensue. So His message is clear: Be ready at all times.Though we are familiar with this teaching of our Lord, spoken many times and in various ways in the Gospels, many people do not heed the message. It is easy to believe that you always have tomorrow to change, and so you give into temptation today. And then tomorrow comes, and the temptation is once again embraced with the thought that you will work on it tomorrow, and henceforth. We can easily go about perpetuating our sins and embracing our temptations while we have the ongoing good intention of changing tomorrow. This is a mistake for two reasons.First of all, it always remains a possibility that our Lord will indeed come today and that today truly will be the end of the world. Or, it always remains a distinct possibility that your life will come to an end today, suddenly and unexpectedly. If that were to happen, would you be fully ready to stand before the judgment seat of Christ? Most people would not, at least not fully ready. Thus, this should be motivation enough to work tirelessly today to be ready now and every moment hereafter. But we should also see this prophecy of our Lord as applying to every present moment of every day. Jesus is always coming to us, suddenly and without warning, inviting us to serve Him by grace. This Gospel passage states that “Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.” This applies to the end of our lives and to the end of the world, but it also applies to every present moment of every day. If we continually seek to lose our lives, meaning, to choose the Heavenly realities over the temporal earthly indulgences we are daily tempted with, then we will also daily experience the grace of salvation, here and now, in every present moment of our lives. Reflect, today, upon whether or not you regularly seek to lose your life for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Do you continually choose grace, mercy, Heaven, obedience, love, self-sacrifice, compassion, forgiveness and the like, every moment of every day of your life? If so, then our Lord will continually bestow the gift of His saving grace upon you here and now, preparing you for the ultimate moment of judgment. If not, then you will be more like the people of Noah's and Lot's time who met with sudden destruction when they least expected it. Live for God now, today, in this moment, and you will be eternally grateful you did.My ever-present Lord, You come to me always, suddenly and unexpectedly, and so often I do not hear You or perceive Your presence. Please help me to live continually for You and by Your grace, choosing Heavenly realities over temporary indulgences. May I live this way always, meeting You every moment of my life and anticipating that glorious final meeting with You at the time of judgment. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

The Burning Present Moment On the spiritual path, enthusiasm often gives way to what one teacher called “the icky middle”—that in-between place where the excitement of beginning meets the challenge of transformation. It's here that we learn: awakening isn't just about peace or bliss. It's about endurance, sincerity, and courage to live in the truth of the present moment. To experience what's real, we must let go of the small, familiar self. The process can feel raw—like peeling off layers of identity that have clung to us for years. At first, it may even hurt. But that sensitivity marks the beginning of true presence. Just as Plato's cave-dweller must adjust to sunlight after a lifetime of shadows, we too must learn to bear the brilliance of awareness. Many retreat back into the dark, but those who stay discover a new world waiting in the light—a world of clarity, love, and direct experience. Letting go of old patterns, relationships, and self-images brings a natural grief. Yet this too is sacred. We honor what we've outgrown without turning back. In that surrender, space opens for joy and freshness—the pulse of Spirit in the present moment. In Kriya Yoga, our practices—breath, mantra, meditation—are the steady work of freeing ourselves from the cave. When the chains fall away, we begin to sense freedom not as an idea, but as a living awareness. The invitation then is simple but profound: Stay with the light. Live in the burning present moment where Spirit is always now. -

Kicking off a new short-form series on reinventing leadership, I sit down with Dr. Suze Wilson, an associate professor at Massey University in New Zealand. She and I discuss the history and significance of critical theory as a tool in understanding and transforming leadership dynamics to foster greater inclusivity and equity. Suze shares a bit about her background and then summarizes her doctoral work on the evolution of leadership theories from trait theory to transformational leadership. She critiques the magical and often unrealistic expectations placed on leaders, particularly highlighting the danger of overlooking power dynamics in modern contexts. The conversation also explores the impact of political trends, particularly the rise of Trumpism, on global leadership norms. Toward the end of the episode, Suze emphasizes pragmatic approaches to fostering healthier leadership practices, referencing New Zealand's former Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, as an illustrative example. The episode concludes with reflections on hope and collective agency in driving social change.Dr. Suze Wilson is a leadership scholar and senior lecturer at Massey University, Auckland, Aotearoa, New Zealand. The Push-Pull of ADHD and Autism: Stretching Without Breaking In this candid conversation, Patricia Young (she/her) and B Lourenco (she/her) dive deep into the realities of living with ADHD, autism, and other forms of neurodivergence. They explore the push-pull between self-accommodation and stretching ourselves, how shame and internalized ableism impact daily life, and what it means to create realistic support systems at home, in relationships, and in the workplace. Expect raw honesty, relatable stories, and practical insights for navigating neurodivergent life. WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODE · The ongoing "driver's seat battle" between ADHD and autism. · The push-pull between making accommodations and stretching ourselves beyond comfort. · Parenting a neurodivergent young adult while balancing when to push and when to allow rest. · Task initiation struggles — from making banana bread to cooking meals. · Body doubling as a powerful tool to reduce shame and spark motivation. · The "crisper/rotter" effect — guilt over wasted food and executive dysfunction. · Financial and practical impacts of task initiation challenges. · How privilege plays into having options like prepared or frozen meals when cooking feels impossible. · The cost of pushing through fatigue and flares with conditions like POTS and MCAS. · "Future me" thinking — and the difficulties neurodivergent folks have with impermanence. · Shame as the "ice cream scoop" on top of disability struggles. · Why diagnosis matters: language helps reduce shame and prevent repeating harmful patterns. · How powerlessness, and an attempt to gain autonomy can show up in small, reactive choices (like leaving a Facebook group). · Sensory sensitivities in family systems — how lack of accommodations can lead to dysfunction. · Practical accommodations for noise-sensitive parents and their kids. · Workplace challenges: 40-hour weeks, return-to-office pressures, and capitalism's rigidity. · Creative problem-solving in disabled and neurodivergent communities. · The deep fear of being uncared for and alone if we can't keep up. · Hyper-independence and isolation in the ADHD/autistic community. · Internalized ableism and the "shoulds" that drive shame and burnout. · Neurodivergence as a dynamic disability — what's possible one day isn't always possible the next. · Radical acceptance as a path toward reducing judgment and finding relief. SOUND BITES · "It begs the question of, okay, is that okay? Can we just say that's how it is?" – B Lourenco · "Instead of putting our energy into addressing the gap, folks will take the great divide and then put a scoop of shame on top of it." – B Lourenco · "All the terrible things that we tell ourselves… if I didn't have that awareness, I'd just keep repeating these patterns." – Patricia Young · "In order to truly accommodate ourselves, we have to acknowledge that it's as hard as it is and that we're as disabled as we are." – B Lourenco · "Sometimes I have to ask myself, what if what you're going through is exactly where you need to be?" – Patricia Young SENSITIVITY IS NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR; IT'S HOW YOUR BRAIN IS WIRED You are not broken. What do we do when our world is crumbling and false prophets (or even AI) only tell us what we want to hear?Drawing on Jeremiah 29, this sermon introduces the concept of "Marble Hope"—a tough, resilient hope that asks us to "seek the well-being of where you are," rather than waiting for a future rescue. This message is paired with Deuteronomy 26, which reminds us that true gratitude requires remembering our difficult past as the only journey that could have brought us to this one, precious, controllable moment. This reflection calls us to sow hope right here, right now, in the single moment where we have a say in what we do and who we are.Scripture Readings: Jeremiah 29:1, 4-14 and Deuteronomy 26:1-11Watch the full worship service: https://youtu.be/kLNu6JSkx9YLearn more about us: www.youngunitedchurch.com

Maharishikaa brings space cadet Bijoy Ravindran back to his body with warmth, laughter, and practical spirituality, as he asks what it truly means to be present in the present moment. Why is there fear of this moment? She highlights the major flaws in the new-advaitin spiritual journey and practice of “observing,” calling it out as a purely conceptual approach to spirituality that distances the seeker from the reality of the present moment—creating layer upon layer of observers observing the observed, a trap of duality disguised as non-duality. Maharishikaa explains why fear often arises when a seeker, after years of practicing such methods- looking for awakening experiences- suddenly must face the present moment. She compares it to someone who has been in space for a prolonged period, and now has to confront the challenges of living on earth—it naturally takes time to adjust on the spiritual journey. She then offers the ultimate golden key to dissolving fear, the very moment it appears: to bend in surrender to the Antaraatman, the Soul within—and to expand consciousness. Maharishikaa outlines the trajectories of both paths. Detaching from the body and observing everything around may bring fleeting bliss, but soon enough, the seeker crashes from these elevated states into the raw reality of life, forced to confront the fears of living. By contrast, the path of surrender forms the foundation for awakening and Self-realization. When the seeker surrenders to the Guru, the Guru redirects the disciple back to their own Self, with no room for fear. Maharishikaa encourages Bijoy to feel deeply grateful that these realizations are happening now, rather than after decades of Saadhanaa, like so many who, after forty years, still carry the sorrow of not having experienced the Truth. #Spirituality #NonDuality #Awakening #SpiritualJourney #PracticalSpirituality Aaryaa Maharishikaa Preeti Maiyaa, is a revolutionary female mystic who fearlessly dares to demystify spirituality in her unrelenting call to realize Self, and act from Source. This is a narrated version of my 'hunkering down' essay on a a calm presence. This essay is inspired by interviews with and writings by David Suzuki, Seth Klein, Joanna Macy and Thich Nhat Hanh. The episode also features excerpts from conscient podcast episodes é55 – un petit instant with France Trépanier, e177 - unknownness as a playground for artists with Asma Khan, e231 – what can we contribute?  with Kelly Wilhelm, e239 roundtable – imagining in public e2 - artist perspectives on social impact with Jesse Hirsh and e235 – art from the soil with Lallan. My conclusion is that:‘I don't think humans will survive much longer as a species on earth and I worry about the suffering of current and future human and more-than-human communities.'And‘My own balance point between hope and despair lies in my belief that we are all living energy and that life in the cosmos will unfold as it should and the best course of action for someone like me is to be as calm a presence as I can while looking up at the stars in wonder and doing everything I can to reduce suffering and prepare for the future.'The narration was recorded on August 11, 2025 while drifting in a kayak on the Preston River in Duhamel, Québec. This is an uninterrupted recording except for 10 seconds of silence in between sections. Quoted texts have been slightly processed for clarity. See the Transcript tab for a complete transcription. As always, feel free to respond in the public comments section of any of my social media or privately to me : claude@conscient.ca.Thanks for listening. Below is there I list 15 resources that I narrate (also available in the written essay and in the episodie transcript): Climate Emergency Unit, led by Seth Klein, presses for the implementation of wartime-scale policies in Canada to confront the climate crisis. They produce the excellent Break In Case of Emergency podcast and campaigns such as the Youth Climate Corps. A good place to start is my conversation with their director of campaigns, Anjali Appadurai, e23 – what does a just transition look like? and my two conversations with Seith Klein : e26 – rallying through art and e77 seth klein – identifying a shared vision and a set of actionsCollapse 2050 by Sarah Connor (which is a pseudonym) explores the unspoken truth about humanity's frightening future. I've found her postings are grounded in fact and terrifying to read. I recommend it for those who want to deepen their understanding about how we got here and why we need to hunker down. In this vein, I also recommend Jessica Wildfire's The Sentinel-Intelligence which is more focused on survival tactics. I recommend her From Collapse Awareness to Collapse Acceptance posting. Both are from the US and have that point of view.Dark Optimism is a not-for-profit public interest research and activism structure featuring the writing of Shaun Chamberlin. I recommend subscribing to his newsletter and consider taking the Surviving the Future : The Deeper Dive course, which I took during the winter of 2025. For more on this see e218 roundtable - surviving the future where you can directly from participants including myself. This 3 month course is intended for those ‘seeking insights and allies to help themselves and their localities through profound change'. It's hard work but transformative and liberating. A similar deep dive course is Facing Human Wrongs, which I mention below.David Suzuki Foundation has a wealth of resources and regenerative projects. For example, I was deeply moved by the Rewilding exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Nature where thirteen Canadian artists bring the concept of rewilding to life, highlighting the vital role that nature plays in our communities through their compelling works of art. Two conscient podcast guests are part of the exhibit : sarah peebles in e230 – how can we reciprocate? and Kendra Fanconi in e36 – towards carbon positive work and e87 – on the artist brigade, ben okri, eco-restoration, eco-grief & reauthoring the world. I also recommend watching a conversation on Instagram between Suzuki and his daughter Sarika about hope and raising children.Ecologies in Practice: Environmentally Engaged Arts in Canada is a book co-edited by Amanda White and Elysia French that explores ‘the ways in which cultural production informs perceptions, communications, and knowledge of environmental distress in a Canadian context'. I was pleased to discover this group of research based ecological artists who were mostly new to me. Amanda and Elysia also produce the excellent Ecologies in Practice Podcast.Emergence Magazine is an ‘online publication with an annual print edition connecting the threads between ecology, culture, and spirituality' which are three of my favorite things. An email arrives every Sunday morning in my inbox that invites me to read, listen and do exercises. I recommend subscribing to their podcast and viewing their film series. How to Fall in Love with the Futureby Rob Hopkins, who I discovered this year, is a ‘deep dive into the people and movements throughout history who have used visions of the future to inspire positive change on a large and dramatic scale'. Rob is co-founder of Transition Network and of Transition Town Totnes. I recommend his From What If To What Next podcast series (2020-2024) and his Field Recordings from the Future.Green Dreamerwith Kamea Chayne encourages us to ‘be more imaginative in dreaming up our futures and reorienting ‘growth' towards what matters most to our well-being'. I've listened to hundreds of episodes of this podcast and am consistently engaged and inspired by these spirited conversations. Green Dreamer also produces the alchemize program which I have taken and recommend  (see e161 alchemize circle - a conversation with kamea chayne). The indefatigable Kamea also produces uprooted : ‘metabolizing the mess and immensity of our socio-ecological-cultural crises via expansive interviews, critical essays and heart-centered reflections.'Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures(GTDF) is an arts-research collective led by Vanessa Andreotti (author of Hospicing Modernity with a follow up book, Outgrowing Modernity: Navigating Complexity, Complicity, and Collapse with Accountability and Compassion which is out now). They operate as a workspace for collaborations around different kinds of artistic, pedagogical, cartographic, and relational experiments that aim to identify and de-activate colonial habits of being, and to gesture towards the possibility of decolonial futures. I took the first iteration of their Facing Human Wrongs course in 2022 which is an exploration of the ongoing systemic violence we perpetuate towards one another and the planet we are part. I produced a radio play about some of my learnings  in e111 - what are the traps in your life?Ishmael is a 1992 philosophical novel by Daniel Quinn. The novel examines the hidden cultural biases driving modern civilization and explores themes of ethics, sustainability, and global catastrophe'. I was transfixed by this conversation between a gorilla and human about human supremacy and cultural myths. Ishmael is part of a trilogy that includes a 1996 spiritual sequel, The Story of B, and a 1997 ‘sidequel', My Ishmael, which are both on my reading radar.Life After Doom by Brian D. McLean explores the ‘catastrophic failure of both our religious and political leaders to address the dominant realities of our time: ecological overshoot, economic injustice, and the increasing likelihood of civilizational collapse'. McLean is a pastor who tackles the complexities of religion and spirituality with finesse and equanimity. His book helped me work through some of my current anxiety and grief. I wrote about his book in a sense of communion. I recommend the audio book version read by the author. In this vein about grief I also recommend Jennifer Atkinson's Facing It, a podcast series about love, loss, and the natural world.otherWise is a ‘cosmolocal learning community of wisdom-seekers and re-villagers - small, place-rooted gatherings - deep, slow virtual inquiry - shared rituals - commons-sense'. This initiative comes out of EcoGather, which now exists as a freely accessible digital archive of courses and a community learning network. otherWise is a good place to explore what ‘hunker down' culture might look like through their otherWisdom Circles and otherGardens programs.Reseed is a podcast hosted by Alice Irene Whittaker about ‘repairing our relationship with nature featuring thoughtful conversations about our collective journey from takers to caretakers'. I love their regenerative and grounded stories. Alice Irene is also author of Homing: A Quest to Care for Myself and the Earthwhich you learn more about in e196  - homing, a book review) and e187 - caring for the planet I love. The Great Simplification with Nate Hagens is about ‘navigating uncertainty through understanding and building a resilient future together'. This is my ‘go to' podcast for unfiltered and credible scientific knowledge but also Nate's philosophical and spiritual insights. In particular, I enjoy Hagen's Frankly series of personal opinions that often mirror my own vulnerabilities and musings. Their web site is a great resource, notably The Great Simplification Movie. Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet by Thich Nhat Hanh and collaborators is a ‘vital approach to combating climate change and creating a better world for us and our future generations'. I recommend this book for those interested in engaged buddhism and environmental spiritual practices. An online course is offered by Plum Village. In this vein, also see e29 loy – the bodhisattva path.Note: New content comes my way every day that inspires and motivates me, for example, Kamea Chayne's All eyes on Gaza, all ears everywhere else, too, and all hands in the dirt!! in Uprooted  and Robertson Work's Coming Home to the Present Moment in Compassionate Conversations. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). Mental toughness is overrated. Emotional regulation, self-awareness, and curiosity are more sustainable mental skills. Flow happens when your perceived skill matches the challenge. Fear arises when you perceive the challenge as greater than your ability—even when it's not. You can train flow state through breathwork, anchoring routines, and sensory cues like music, temperature, or feel. Reflection—done without judgment—is essential. Curiosity > criticism. Technology like FocusCalm and Mendi can now measure brainwave activity and train real-time focus. Cold plunges and challenges off the course build resilience you can bring onto the course. It's okay to care about outcome—but learn to measure success through your process. You're good enough. That self-belief is the filter that colors every golf shot. Key Quotes: Resilience isn't just about bouncing back—it's about staying focused when things go well too. Curiosity over critical—that's our mantra for post-shot routines. Flow follows focus. You must train your attention to stay present. You're already good enough. Most golfers don't need more skill—they need more belief. Cold plunges aren't about golf—but they teach you how to do hard things. That transfers. Don't just do a routine because your coach told you to—make sure it gets you calm, confident, and committed. Hello to you Byron and Mariah Edgington listening in Gainesville, Florida!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. My friend Byron Edgington wrote: “Isn't it fascinating how we humans revert to past events, as if we could/can change what happened there?”Yes. We humans can be a silly species failing to acknowledge the past as the past. The past is like the wake behind a boat - the series of waves that trails behind a moving boat. But the wake doesn't drive the boat; however, awareness of and learning from the past is what allows us to drive the boat of our present into a better future.  The phrase "the wake doesn't drive the boat" (a metaphor attributed to Alan Watts) means that your past or wake of your life boat doesn't determine your future. Yes, learning from our past influences our present actions; but the future is determined by how we drive our boat now, not by the path we've already traveled.Question: How have you learned to drive your boat forward based on choices arising from past lessons?Click HERE to listen to Alan Watts talk about the boat analogy and how it applies to the present moment.Thank you for listening and steady as she goes! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Our life can carry us away when we aren't looking. The mindfulness we get from practicing meditation can very easily point us back in the direction of the present moment that we can loose sight of so easily. The breath is our compass. In and out. In and out. One breath at a time.

In this week's episode, 215 - Tips for Worry and Overwhelm, I'm sharing one of my favorite mindset tools to help missionaries—and all of us—navigate those heavy moments when the future feels too big or uncertain. Whether you're preparing to leave, currently serving, home from your mission, or parenting a missionary, this episode is for you. We're talking about how to “zoom in” and “zoom out”—and how both are powerful tools when used on purpose. I'll walk you through a story from one of my clients, break down how our brains react to unknowns, and offer super practical ways to bring your focus back to the present moment. This simple shift can bring so much peace, clarity, and confidence. If your thoughts ever spin into worst-case scenarios or you feel stuck in the unknowns, this episode will give you a helpful reframe and a sense of direction. Can't wait for you to listen! As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review.
