Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 13 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week's first segment looks at what it is like to be a freelancer in the music industry landscape of Los Angeles in the year 2025.  Amber Zhu dives into this topic with the subject of her interview, Lu Cheng, a freelance music composer based in Los Angeles, California, who got his master's degree from USC has worked as a composer for various media formats including film, TV and the gaming industry. Zhu and Cheng discuss Cheng's career trajectory, from his first job as a composer assistant, through his moving on to short films and then expanding to other media forms. They discuss the experience of working with and for creatives before touching on current industry trends including Cheng's insights regarding the emergence of AI technology and how short-form vertical videos like those on the ReelShort platform have changed or will change the landscape of the creator's community. They wrap up the conversation with Lu's advice for future creators and people who want to pursue careers in the creative industries. Our second episode of the week follows Will Swan on his journey through the career of Elizabeth Moore. Moore, who currently uses her skills and knowledge from working in the creative industries as a consultant and life coach, started her career in radio and print on Boston's North Shore at: WFNX Radio, The Marblehead Reporter, and WNSH Radio. She moved on to become Personal Assistant to Maury Povich before working as an executive assistant to Jann Wenner, of Wenner Media, publishers of Rolling Stone, US Weekly, and Men's Journal. Perhaps what she is most known for is holding the position of Chief Of Staff to Oprah Winfrey for 11 years before serving as a consulting Producer with the original team that created the Emmy award winning Super Soul Sunday on OWN, The Oprah Winfrey Network. Swan and Moore delve into Moore's long and varied career, reflecting on the work and projects she has contributed to throughout. Before concluding the conversation, they touch on advice that Moore has for those navigating through entertainment industries, including dealing with some of the more corporate aspects.

What an intense past couple of weeks! I don't know about you, but I've experienced a whirlwind of emotions lately. I feel sad about my kids' futures and am grieving over the state of our democracy. At the same time, I feel empowered, knowing that I have self-agency and can choose how I feel each day. By paying attention to when I'm in fight or flight versus rest and digest, I recognize that I can't help others if I'm constantly in a state of fear, hate, or anger. So, I've made a pact with myself: to feel all my feelings, but also embrace what is, and move forward from a place of love and light, guided by what I call the *mother archetype*—an image of a nurturing, protective mother that resides in the collective unconscious of all humans. This archetype is associated with qualities of love, compassion, protection, fertility, creativity, and abundance.Having both Mary Pipher and Elizabeth Lesser on the Cracking Open podcast this week felt like divine timing. Over the last month, I re-released the episodes that they had previously and individually done, to remind the listeners who they are and the vast amounts of wisdom they each have to offer. Having them back in my first-ever dual interview for this podcast was an even greater treat! This special conversation reminds us that life can be simpler if we focus on giving and receiving warmth, spending time in nature, and being present in every moment—whether it's the comfortable or the uncomfortable parts of life. Both of these women encourage us to ask ourselves each day: “What am I walking away from today, and what am I walking toward?”Their wisdom reminds us that life is not easy, and Elizabeth encourages us to be curious about what it means to be a hero: “Let's make the heroes be the ones who stay behind and tend and befriend. Who love. Let's make love be the sign of a hero.” Or, as Mary says, “Mr. Rogers was wonderful because he opened up children's eyes to the diversity of people, and also the importance of understanding and kindness toward people.”Both women embody the *mother archetype*, and they will undoubtedly give you hope for the future, remind you to love your neighbors, and inspire you to never give up on your passion to help others while also finding your own path.Elizabeth Lesser has touched millions through her bestselling books, co-founded the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, helped Oprah Winfrey produce a 10-week online seminar based on Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth, is a frequent Oprah's Soul Series host and has appeared on Super Soul Sunday.Mary Pipher is a community organizer and activist for many causes and has authored 11 books including 4 New York Times bestsellers. Her latest book is A Life in Light, a luminous new memoir that taps into a cultural moment to offer wisdom, hope, and insight into loss and change. After finishing their interview, I sat in my chair with my hand on my heart and took some deep breaths. I felt immense gratitude for the opportunity to have conversations and connections with such incredible and courageous women like Elizabeth and Mary. Our time together reminded me that when I am scared or in a place of fear, I am going to pause and redirect my energy. I'm going to make Love my hero and my north star.Love,MollyLearn more about Elizabeth Lesser and her work hereLearn more about Mary Pipher and her work hereThe next 6-Month Coaching Group begins in August 2025.Click here for more details.Follow Molly on Instagram and Facebook

October 19th marked the 13th anniversary of my dad's passing. It was a deeply profound day, as I experienced a revelation about my grief. I realized that to reach a healthier place with my grief, I needed to engage with it differently. For the past 13 years, I've held onto a level of consciousness regarding my grief that requires transformation. I've been wearing a cloak of identification with the narrative of someone who lost their parents too young, feeling like a victim and grappling with anger over both of my parents' deaths (my mom passed away five years ago). However, last Saturday, I realized to reach the next level of healing, I needed to cultivate a different relationship with my grief and my dad. While I'm unsure exactly what this new relationship looks like, I set an intention that day to let go and surrender, shifting from the mindset of “this happened to me” to a perspective of “this happened for me.” I aspire for my grief to embody more light than darkness, and to serve as a teacher rather than a burden. I want it to guide me toward humility and deeper wisdom. When grief resurfaces and I feel thesadness and loss in my bones, I wish to embrace it through my tears or screams, but not to identify solely with it.I share this journey because one woman who has profoundly influenced my understanding of grief is Elizabeth Lesser. I discovered her work around 11 years ago, shortly after my dad's death, when I read her book Broken Open. Every word resonated deeply and reassured me that I could survive this loss. This book radically changed my life, and I often gift it to those going through difficult transitions. The Cracking Open podcast has an exciting upcoming episode where, for the first time, I host a dual interview with Elizabeth and Mary Pipher to discuss a particular and profound issue for women (stay tuned for its release on November 21st!)Leading up to that episode's release, I will re-release their initial interviews with me so you can soak in their deep wisdom and charm. Whether it's the first time you've listened or a refresh, you are in for a treat.Elizabeth has touched millions through her bestselling books, including Cassandra Speaks: When Women Are the Storytellers, The Human Story Changes, Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow and Marrow: Love, Loss & What Matters Most. She co-founded the Omega Institute, a retreat and conference center in Rhinebeck, NY, dedicated to holistic education and social change movements, attracting over 30,000 participants annually. In 2008, she also helped Oprah Winfrey produce a 10-week online seminar based on Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth, which reached more than 8 million viewers worldwide. Elizabeth is a frequent Oprah's Soul Series host and has appeared on Super Soul Sunday. Please enjoy this incredible conversation. Grab a cup of tea, a notebook, and a pen, and take this hour to soak in Elizabeth's storytelling, wisdom, and insights.Love,MollyLearn more about Elizabeth Lesser and her work hereThe new 6-Month Coaching Group begins November 6th! Original Air Date: January 27, 2021One of Oprah's favorite quotes comes from German mystic Meister Eckhart. He said, “If the only prayer you say in your entire life is ‘thank you,' that will be enough.” Oprah says when she started keeping a gratitude journal more than 20 years ago, it was one of the most important things she's done. The daily practice of writing down five things to be grateful for balanced her life in subtle and inspiring ways. "It sounds simple,” Oprah says, “but when you go through the day staying conscious about what you put on your gratitude list, it shifts the lens through which you see the world.” In this episode of Super Soul, Oprah sits down with luminaries like Mark Nepo, Ram Dass, Elizabeth Lesser, Reverend Ed Bacon, Tracey Jackson, Paul Williams, Geneen Roth, Cheryl Strayed, Caroline Myss, Gretchen Rubin, Shawn Achor, Marie Forleo, Lynne Twist, Louie Schwartzberg and Norman Lear to discover that the practice of gratitude can elevate our lives to a state of grace. Interviews with these talented writers, speakers and thought leaders are excerpted from Oprah's Emmy Award-winning show Super Soul Sunday. The Power of Friendship: Mark Nepo The thing worth keeping alive for the rest of time, is friendship itself. For being seen and heard empowers us to stand by our core. When standing by our core, we have the strength to be fully who we are. When fully who we are, we become humble instruments for each other's inevitable transformation. At our best, we serve as inadvertent catalysts for each other's eventual illumination. Coming together like this is intrinsic to our nature and helping each other transform is one of the deep purposes of friendship. Finding purpose brings meaning to pain, shifting focus from self to service.   (14:39) Purpose And Healing There's a superstition that discussing negative things can harm a business, but it's false. Everyone has internal blocks, often from trauma. Entrepreneurs may seek to escape trauma through success, but unresolved issues persist. True growth comes from addressing these blocks, leading to purpose and healing.   (18:55) Limiting Blocks To overcome limiting blocks, first identify the core belief driving your emotions, which is often tied to feelings of inadequacy. Examine what you believe something means, as this can reveal underlying trauma. Understanding these beliefs helps address and overcome your blocks.   (22:22) Claim Your Power To overcome trauma and claim your power, consider using a well-developed framework that has been refined through high-end retreats and seminars. This approach helps identify and address the blocks holding you back, enabling you to heal and grow.   (24:20) Daily Habits While the morning is crucial, a powerful start actually begins with protecting your bedtime and establishing a consistent nighttime routine. Ensure you get quality sleep by winding down with calming activities, avoiding screens, and setting a regular sleep schedule. A well-rested night sets the stage for a productive and focused morning.   (27:46) Final Advice When you connect with something larger than yourself and offer your gift in service, you embark on a transformative journey. Past trauma may be holding you back, but understanding it without self-judgment can help you move forward. He explores how his abandonment wound ultimately became a catalyst for an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and understanding. Tune in to gain deeper insights into the transformative power of life's challenges and to hear Eben's experience of life after death.Academic neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander III, whose career includes decades as a physician, and associate professor at Harvard Medical School and revered teaching hospitals, was once staunchly committed to the materialist world view -- the belief  that the physical world is all that exists. His scientific belief system was altered by his 2008 transcendental near-death experience (NDE), an odyssey into another realm during a week-long coma. Despite a bleak medical prognosis, Dr. Alexander awoke to make an inexplicable return to full health. From a distance, the ascent looks clear and smooth, but once you actually set out for the summit, you discover unexpected valleys and precarious ridges along the way. If your internal compass isn't set to keep climbing, every stumble will give you an excuse to turn back. Over the years, there have been many times when I've found myself climbing a steep, rocky road and there have been setbacks which threatened to overwhelm me or stop me in my tracks. But I've learned to keep going and to tell myself, ‘This too shall pass, and I will be better for it.' In this Super Soul podcast, Oprah sits down with such legendary spiritual teachers and thought leaders as: Eckhart Tolle, Stephen Colbert, President Joe Biden (VP at the time), Father Richard Rohr, Kristen and Rob Bell, Alanis Morissette, Cheryl Strayed, Paul Williams, Tracey Jackson, Glennon Doyle, Tracy McMillan, Cindy Crawford, Jon Bon Jovi and Joel Osteen. They discuss how they made their way up their own mountains, and what kept them going, no matter how steep the climb. A similar path is waiting for you. How are you at holding space for tension? The discomfort of tension in our lives can make us rush through a trying moment to get out of discomfort as quickly as possible.   What would change for you if you could embrace discomfort and sit in it for a minute? In this Greatest Hits episode, I talk about an interview with Oprah and Steven Pressfield for SuperSoul Sunday. They were talking about resistance - and that resistance MUST exist in all opportunities that provide growth, evolution, and magic.   Steven said, “Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the life unlived within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”  Wow, if that doesn't speak to my soul. I see so many Shameless Moms working to hold space for tension and practicing embracing the resistance. It is in these spaces that some of life's most powerful lessons and moments come to exist. It is profound and life-altering.   And I see Shameless Moms who feel the resistance and take it as a sign that something is not meant to be.  Mama…. NO.   I want you to lean into the resistance. See it. Embrace it. Own it. Walk through it. It will change you - in all the BEST ways.   Listen in to hear me share the 3 phases of holding tension that will allow you to walk through resistance, find your power, and declare a magical VICTORY on the other side.  We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Today's conversation has been 5 years in the making. In 2018 I sat down with Mark Nepo, one of the great spiritual teachers, authors, and poets of our time. During our conversation he posed a question to walk with. Inviting me (and those tuning in) to live into the answers over time. When my heart begins to close, how do I open it again? For 5 years I've been exploring this question with some of the world's leading thinkers, and doers. And today Mark and I will dive deeper into this theme, as we discuss the practice of opening the heart, in the midst of some of the storms we are facing: political polarization, climate change, gun violence, etc. How do we open the heart in the face of a storm? How do we follow our heart and engage in the practice of being real as we make the courageous journey toward wholeness? And, how do we meet adversity, and challenge from a place of love vs. fear? These are the three chapters of our conversation, and the big questions we will engage together. If this conversation sparks your curiosity and you'd like to explore these themes further, I would highly encourage you to pick up a copy of Mark's book Surviving Storms: Finding the Strength to Meet Adversity. About Mark Nepo:With over a million copies sold, Mark Nepo has moved and inspired readers and seekers all over the world with his #1 New York Times bestseller The Book of Awakening.  Beloved as a poet, teacher, and storyteller, Mark has been called "one of the finest spiritual guides of our time," A bestselling author, he has published twenty-five books and recorded sixteen audio projects.  Mark was part of Oprah Winfrey's The Life You Want Tour in 2014, has appeared several times with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday and was also chosen as one of OWN's SuperSoul 100, a group of inspired leaders using their gifts and voices to elevate humanity.
