In this episode, I talk about what it’s like to live life as an experiment. Living this way is born out of a sense of curiosity, wonder and the love of learning and adventure which are all necessary components for living a spacious life. As I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately, I identified a critical shift I had made somewhere along the way that had left me lacking joy and not feeling inspired to experiment anymore. In this episode, I am repurposing EP27 from last year where I tackle the final weeks of the year which we traditionally refer to as "the holiday season”. The hustle and bustle and pace of this time of year tends to sap the joy out of the season for many folks. I am proposing that it doesn’t have to be this way. If we pause and become mindful, pay attention and consciously create a season that brings about the feelings we want to feel, it can be a more joy-filled time for all of us. Listen in as I share five questions you can ask yourself as you begin scheduling your time with others and allotting your funds toward the season’s festivities. I also share three ways that a shift in approaching the season can actually create space for you not only during the season, but also after the holidays are over. This message is timely during any season, and this feels like the best time for us to look at it is now. Join me now as we begin to create space... In this episode, I share what I have found to be the core longings of every person - the deep need to be seen, heard, and held. I talk about the symptoms or signs that present externally when you are not getting these desires met in your life. Then I discuss what to do about that. In this episode, I welcome Jessica Patterson, yoga teacher and therapist, writer and educator and studio owner and sage as she shares a little bit of her wisdom around all things yoga. Jessica shares how she came to yoga as well as some significant stops along the way in her journey. She talks about the deeper aspects of a personal yoga practice, the ways in which her practice has evolved over the last 20 years, and the one thing that defines it. Jessica also shares her definition of yoga, her thoughts on the use of the word pose and posture to describe the physical portion of yoga, as well as the term ‘advanced practice’. We also discuss how our culture’s preoccupation with the body has impacted yoga in the western world and how we approach our bodies as a site of either conquest or liberation and where the ancient texts tell us we should focus our energy. If you are looking to take your yoga understanding and practice beyond the physical asana and beyond the mat, you will love my conversation with Jessica and I guarantee you will be inspired to take your practice deeper. In this episode, I talk about honoring our natural rhythms - specifically, pertaining to the changing of seasons. As we move fully into fall, our days are getting shorter and nights extending longer, however, certain ‘advancements’ in our society have manipulated this process in an attempt to give us more time to be productive and artificially extend our daylight. I talk about the effect this has on our well-being and how we can feel in our body, the consequences of ignoring this shift in energy if we just pay attention. I describe the shift in energy from summer to fall and then I offer three practical ways you can live more in line with the autumnal rhythms taking beautiful cues from our natural surroundings. In this episode, I welcome Dr. Cathy Subber, chiropractor, mom of 2 and leader and organizer of Moms in her community, to discuss an important aspect of our relationship with our selves - body image. Cathy graciously and confidently shares what she refers to as her lifelong issue with weight and body image. A journey that began as a young athlete her Dr.’s office for a sports physical hearing that she “just weighs too much”, moving into adulthood with the all-too-common quest to look “perfect” in her wedding dress and continuing to this day even though she knows she’s in a much happier place of acceptance of the body she was born with. Cathy shares very practical tips that she’s used to help her get to a place of less caring what others think to more of what she refers to as a much more “solid” person in herself. Cathy shares very personal stories from her life of the struggle to find balance between weight and health. We also talk a bit about the damage we suffer when comparing ourselves to others and the value of being less concerned with our weaknesses and more concerned with intentionally focusing on our strengths. In this episode, I welcome Corrin Vecchitto, Sattva Yoga master teacher, pediatric nurse, and healer leading a global life as she shares her holistic practices while traveling the world. Corrin shares with us some practical tips we can use in our quest for a more joyful life. We talk meditation, breath work and a return to simplicity and connection with nature. We spend a good deal of time talking about the workings of the mind and the idea that it is in the illusions of the mind that we tend to get lost. Corrin shares simple practices we can use to help us drop the masks we wear and return to our true self. And how simple meditation and breath work gives us the space to see how we are thinking and acting and how that affects our daily lives & daily moments. She talks about how we must rewire our brains and nervous system and that we can’t simply decide to shift our thoughts to make a change. Corrin was generous enough to share a specific technique to start using today and a plan for changing thoughts and behaviors to more of what you want, as well as practicals to help with the resistance or anxiety that may come up when you attempt meditation and to help you become more comfortable with silence. In this, the final episode of our series exploring Spacious Relationships, I welcome Laura Jane Mellencamp yoga teacher, healer, mentor, wife, mother and business owner who is bent on changing the state of our hearts through her teachings of drawing inward. Laura Jane believes we are living in a ‘hot-headed, cold-hearted world” and that her work here is to help cool the mind and warm the heart. Laura Jane and I spend a good deal of time talking about belonging and how she says arriving there is an ‘inside job’. She talks about the greater depth of belonging to everything and that true belonging is through being in relationship to ‘something greater’. We touch on Self-love and Laura Jane shares her unique perspectives on its relationship to forgiveness and recovery and how we are all offered this path. We cover so much more with regard to learning to live in healthy relationship with the world around us, that you might want to have something handy to take notes and possibly listen to it more than once. It’s week three of our series exploring spacious relationships and I’m telling you, this one is just as fabulous as the first two! This week I welcome Susan Quiriconi, a new-to-me sweet friend who generously shares the wisdom she’s gained through personal as well as professional experiences. As I often do when I have such deeply rich people on the show, we covered a lot of ground. Let’s start with how Susie and her husband Roy are beating the odds with their 45 year marriage as it is Susie’s 3rd and Roy's 2nd. Susie says their relationship continues to grow in what they accept is the final chapter of their lives. We talk a lot about how to have a successful blended family and we explore key elements to a healthy marriage no matter what time around it is. She talks about the importance of adventure (and what that means to them), the importance of looking at self and both people taking 100% of the responsibility in the success of the relationship as well as the importance of having an individual self beyond the marriage. Susie and her husband are living in a unique part of the world right now as two years ago, at the age of 77 and 85 they decided to continue their life of adventure together by moving to a beautiful retirement community in Mexico. We talked a lot about healthy community and the beauty of friendship through the years and across the miles. Once again, it’s a "can’t miss" episode with something for everyone! In this episode, we start our series on Spacious Relationships and today I have the privilege of talking with Kari Kwinn, life-long yogi, medical anthropologist and yoga teacher of teachers with extensive experience in relationships from all facets of life. We spend most of our time together, delving into all things codependency. Kari shares from both professional expertise as well as personal experience and starts off with her definition of codependency and then explains the origin of the concept. I found it fascinating as she brought up something that’s rarely done by highlighting the beneficial aspects of codependent behaviors. Kari also shares the subtle process we can use to change a habit or behavior, how to get our power back if we are stuck in codependent behaviors, and the red flags we can look for that help distinguish between controlling, manipulative behaviors vs. healthy nurturing, caring behaviors. We touch on how codependency presents as it relates to self-worth, the difference between secrecy and privacy, and the importance of having what she calls ‘higher council’ and how the lack of strong relationships outside of a primary partnership can feed codependent behaviors. We wrap up our time together with talk on boundaries and the idea of a “do-over” and that using what she calls “our amazing secret language of language” to work through so many of our relationship challenges. Get comfortable and prepare to sit at the foot of this wise woman as she teaches on this all too prevalent topic. In this podcast, I welcome Lauren Brooks, wife and mom of 4, successful entrepreneur and Kettlebell Queen who’s living a spacious life in southern California. Lauren shares with us that after finding what she knew to be her calling in kettle bells, she also found her self in a male-dominated organization and culture that just didn’t feel right to her. After repeatedly being told she was ‘too nice’ and 'not manly enough’ she decided to step away from the safety of the organization that had taught her her craft, take a leap of faith and start her own thing where she’s been able to successfully build her brand her own way! Lauren shares that public speaking used to be her greatest fear, how she conquered that fear and how that victory has empowered her to do what she knows she’s meant to do. She then shares some recent breakthroughs in vulnerability on social media as she has peeled off layers and revealed more of her humanness both as a woman and a mom and how she’s been able to slay a few demons from her youth by making the decision to stop taking things so personally. We talk about the importance of community to our well-being and how Lauren is building her global community as well as inspiring neighbors to connect with each other. Lastly, Lauren tells us how listening to a tugging at her soul led her to take a recent trip that both stretched and nourished her spiritually and has had a profound impact on her since she’s been back home. I found this book to be a perfect companion to what I am striving for in my life and at the end I share with you the action steps I am taking as a result of what I learned from the research and stories she shares between the covers of this book. In this episode, we acknowledge that May is National Mental Health Awareness month and discuss the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illness and work toward treating it with the same diligence as other health crises. I share some of my own mental health struggles as well as some staggering statistics in an attempt to drive home the magnitude of the issue. I then pose a challenge to you to increase your understanding of the illnesses & their treatments, and to then equip yourself with the tools you need to support the mental health of your family, friends and community. As a bonus, I also share a great incentive for you to take my challenge in the form of a contest offered by Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation. In this episode, we revisit the topic of mindfulness. If you remember in EP32 last December, I strongly suggested that you set an intention to live more mindfully in 2018. Since we are a third of the way through the year, I thought it would be helpful to check-in and see how it’s going. Listen in as I provide you with a list of thought-provoking questions to ask yourself to help you assess where you are at in your shift from living mindlessly to living mindfully. You can then use the questions in my simple 5-step process to self-check. My intent with this episode is to help you realize and celebrate your successes, acknowledge areas for improvement, and create the space for continued growth. If you are looking to live a more calm, joyful and spacious life, living mindfully is the most effective practice to get you there. Join me now as we begin to create space. In this episode, I encourage you to get curious about your relationship to a word that is often overused and can be a hindrance to living a spacious life and that word is “SHOULD". When the word ‘should’ comes up there is always a reason you haven’t already engaged in the activity but rather are just thinking or talking about it. That reason may be that it is not in alignment for you and I share a practice you can use to come to healthier decisions on what you will or won't do, so you can commit and follow through. Learning to release the heaviness of the language of "should" and stop living out of obligation will allow you to live a more spacious, joyful life. In this Episode, I share about some major happenings going on in my life over the past few weeks and the lessons I’ve been learning with regards to living spaciously. Then I share some real life examples of what happens when we don’t live a spacious life, when we don’t live mindfully, when we don’t slow down and pay attention in our daily life or in our workplace. My hope in sharing this is that you will be able to examine your own life and see if you are experiencing similar and we can both learn from it. I also share an analogy that helps me stay in the creator’s seat more often than the reactor’s seat. Join me now as we begin to create space... In this episode, I welcome Nancy Tilton, educator and co-founder of ALC Mosaic, a small, independent school located in Charlotte, NC, that is paving the way for a much needed shift in our educational system. Nancy shares the pivotal moment where she realized she wasn’t going to have the impact on the world she had hope to when she chose to be a teacher in the public school system and how that moment prompted her to find a different way to work with young people. She talks about her exploration into self-directed learning systems and how she has became a driving force in the growing movement toward alternative learning environments. Nancy tackles some of the fears parents may have in moving from traditional schooling to a more alternative school environment and the skills the young people in her school are being asked to learn everyday that are a complete break from our traditional world of academia and, arguably, tremendously more important to living a successful, joyful life. With a focus on learning to thrive in a community, developing skills in social and emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and collaboration and a deep belief that kids can create the life they want along with a world they want to live in, makes this learning environment something to take a serious look at. This topic is both deep and wide, a complex issue but imperative for us to look at if we are going to have a hope for a better tomorrow and a rich life for future generations. My hope is that this episode will get the wheels turning for you to look further into self-directed learning as not only a viable, but desirable option for your kids. In this episode, I welcome back one of my regular guests to the show, Nancy Hill, to share her wisdom on the importance of bringing back ceremony to our modern day culture and just how easy it is or us to do that. She shares with us the three types of ceremony and how the practice brings us into the present, creates an awareness and acknowledgment to what is happening in our inner life while we are in the midst of a transition in our outer life. She talks about how we can tend to get so busy in our day-to-day pursuits that we run the risk of missing out on the meaningful soul connection that is made when we create ceremony and move consciously from one stage of life to another. Nancy shares how ceremony can help us take back our own ability to be in touch with the divine and remind us that we are a part of something much bigger than just ourselves. We explore some of the most important elements of ceremony including the honoring of those who have been a part of our journey and the healing balm of story telling. Nancy encourages us to ask ourselves “is there a passage happening in my life right now that would be richer if I slowed down and dropped in to discover deeper connection? You will walk away from our chat with the 6 questions you need to answer as you consider how to incorporate ceremony into your life and equipped to experience your first ceremony as soon as you’d like to! In this episode, we continue our series on Spacious Parenting. For the month of March I’m talking with inspiring Mamas who are creating safe spaces for their kids as they navigate challenges they feel they either weren’t prepared for or chart courses they didn’t necessarily expect to take and have since ended up paving the way for others in similar situations. Today I welcome Alexandra Kogen, wife, Mom to Aiden, founder of Mountain Tots, Tinkergarten leader and Marine biologist turned mountain lover. Alexandra shares how she and her husband decided to move from the west coast to Colorado specifically so they could parent their son in the environment they felt was most conducive to the rewilding parenting style. Alexandra shared that play is the #1 way kids 0-8 learn. She talked about some of her core beliefs in how kids learn and grow best such as the importance of finding and delighting in the child’s strengths, allowing the child to learn at the pace they choose, and celebrating their learning style and choices each day. She shares a specific instance in how she plays out her role as guide in suggesting safe ways to experience risk, implementing caution in adventure, and fostering curiosity and healthy problem solving. We talked about the wisdom that lies in allowing our kids to initiate more of the structure or the ‘how’ of each day instead of parents initiating it solely. Alexandra talks about honoring your child’s desire to explore and letting go of our desire for them to have a ‘perfect experience' which often excludes natural consequences or organic results. Learning to move through life with a learning disability and knowing she thought and learned differently than her counterparts in school fueled her interest to pave the way for a different way of raising her son. Mountain Tots was born out of her and her son’s need for community as well as a way to get their daily dose of Vitamin N (nature). The group has become quite popular offering toddler led walkabouts and camping trips along with socialization and adventure. Her dream is to nurture in the kids a foundational loving relationship with the environment and offer opportunities to engage all of the children's senses. I am inspired by all that Alexandra is doing for her son and the community of families she is building and I think you will be too. In this episode, we continue our series around the theme of Spacious Parenting. For the month of March I’m talking with inspiring Mamas who are creating safe spaces for their kids as they navigate challenges they feel they weren’t prepared for or chart courses they didn’t necessarily expect to take and have since ended up paving the way for others. Today I welcome back a past guest of mine, Amanda Hodge. Amanda is a wife, mom of three, and spiritual mentor. She shares her journey to and through motherhood and how she has made a radical shift in her parenting style over the past 6 years toward a more spacious approach to include an unschooling lifestyle. She shares how she came about making the shift and the various styles of alternative schooling styles she tried before landing on unschooling. Amanda shares a very simple definition of unschooling that really makes sense to even the most skeptical sorts. Unschooling has a lot of moving parts and a great deal of variability and looseness associated with it, but at the foundational level, Amanda shares, we must see our kids as arriving whole and complete at birth and that our job as parent is to walk alongside them nurturing their growth. We delved into various concepts along with specific examples in support of this type of parenting and learning to include the concept of deschooling, the idea and implications of depressurizing, the essentialness of preserving relationship, and the core necessity (and quite possibly the greatest shift for most of us) of trusting ourselves as parent and trusting our child as a person with innate knowledge ready to be discovered. It’s another deeply rich topic and I’m thrilled to share our chat with you. Join us now as we begin to create space... For the month of March I’m talking with inspiring Mamas who are creating safe spaces for their kids as they navigate challenges they feel they weren’t prepared for or chart courses they didn’t necessarily expect to take and have since ended up paving the way for others in similar situations. Today I welcome Heather Nardi, wife, Mom of two, author, speaker, and Intuitive Parenting Coach as she shares her journey to and through motherhood. Heather shares how she knew her daughter, from a very early age, was going to require her to re-think parenting. She talks about how they came about getting an initial diagnosis of anxiety for her daughter and how that eventually led her family down the path of what she calls the ‘mental health cycle’ and how it was the combination of Heather's intentionality of caring for herself and her daughter’s courage to speak her truth that provided them with a way to step out of the cycle and into a new solution. Heather shares some of the wisdom she’s gained on the mental health system for adolescents, and how when they moved from a traditional, medicine approach to a holistic approach, their eyes were opened to some very beautiful spiritual gifts they hadn’t seen before. Heather shared some about her role as the “heart-center of the family” and that when she began tuning into her intuition, her family also shifted and that when their family became a team and began tuning in more to what their children were saying, her whole family began operating at a higher vibrational level. Heather believes her daughter has been her greatest teacher and now makes it her mission to share the wisdom she has gained with other parents. I’m presenting another timely topic and Heather offers great insight into how we can approach mental health a little differently. EP41: Decluttering - It’s All About Releasing In this episode, I tackle the topic of decluttering and what I believe to be the most effective way to do it and why. I talk about addressing the emotions we attach to things that cause us to hold on to them longer than is healthy, the part grief plays in the holding on to stuff and how incorporating mindfulness is the key to positive release and preventive against future clutter. In this episode, I talk about our tendency toward being creatures of comfort (guilty!) and how we are better served by developing a healthy relationship with the uncomfortable. I discuss the beneficial practice of training your mind and body to become friends with discomfort rather than resisting the uncomfortable emotions and moments you face regularly. I touch on the notion from Carl Jung that “what we resist, persists” and how you can lessen the amount of time you spend in resistance by making small shifts in your comfortable daily habits. These small, simple changes can help you learn how to stay with the larger, more intense discomforts you inevitably face. I also share what I’ve learned about sitting with discomfort from my personal yin yoga practice as well as from being sick on and off for the last month(!) I’m excited to talk about this important practice that can significantly improve your levels of calm, ease and joy. In this episode, I pose the question: ‘What comes first - Joy or Gratitude?’ You hear me talk a lot about living a more joy-filled life and one of the ways we are told we can do that is through living a grateful life, but which one comes first? The joy or the Gratitude? Let’s ponder the relationship between joy and gratitude and have a little fun as we, together, look to find what feels most true by engaging in an experiment. I am embarking on a 10-day experiment to see if when I focus on gratefulness throughout my day and use some specific techniques of meditation, reflection, journaling, and intentional noticing, will the level of joy I experience (and exude) increase? I invite you to join me in this experiment and see what you learn to be true for yourself and then listen in to EP40 to see how my experiment turned out. Join me now as we begin to create space... Join me in my 10-day Experiment to see whether the level of joy we experience (and exude) increases when we focus on being grateful. And then tune in to EP40 to hear what I learned during my 10-day experiment.
