Jamal Bryant called Nolan Wells' death a lynching on the boy's 19th birthday. He brought cake to the sanctuary. Ben Crump in the pulpit. Spike Lee in a pew. No charging document. Crump's independent autopsy still says undetermined. Jason Whitlock puts Pastor Jamal Bryant's Genesis shout and missing-throat line next to Jussie Smollett. Same empty file. Different pulpit. Parents asked what happened. Bryant sold a sequel. "Harmony." Culture, faith, and the plot hole they covered with hot rhetoric. This week, Brett, Austin, and Jason cover four very different corners of gaming — starting with Halo: Campaign Evolved. Brett played the entire thing with zero nostalgia, and the remake genuinely won him over. But the three new prequel missions, the only original content in the release, tell a different story: reused assets, thin characters, and a baffling choice to have a new character openly dismiss Master Chief. That firsthand breakdown gets weighed against the discourse, the layoffs that hit the studio a week after launch, and what it all means for a $50 price tag. From there, the crew takes a first look at Funnel Runners, an early access co-op survival game where the real threat is a terrifyingly realistic tornado — thin on content right now, but building real community buzz. Then it's a generational showdown on Ghost Recon Wildlands' 25th anniversary update: Jason's 195 hours deep, Brett's walking in cold, and the two compare notes on the new 4K/60fps upgrade, the Last Rites mission, and what Ubisoft's silence on Breakpoint says about where the franchise is really headed. Closing things out, Austin replays Spider-Man 2018 in the wake of Brand New Day's record-breaking box office run, using it as a lens for what Marvel's Wolverine — Insomniac's next big swing — might look like when it lands in September. Time-value takes, honest tradeoffs, and opinions throughout — no hype, just the real talk busy gamers actually need. Just like in the base game, you play as a Ditto rebuilding society, but this time you're doing it under the sea! With a wealth of quality-of-life features, a new town, and a ton of new Pokémon, is this DLC worth buying? Then, Hagen is making his first appearance on Random Encounter to chat about a remake of one of his all-time favorites, Gothic 1 Remake. When the original was released in 2001, it became a cult classic that is still loved today. Unlike many remakes, this one is shockingly faithful to the original! In 2019, John Fenley was 39, newly separated, and living in one of his mother's rental apartments in Provo, Utah. Searching LoopNet for the biggest building at the lowest price, he found a 220,000-square-foot warehouse on 17 acres in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, listed at $375,000. He assumed the price was a typo. He had never been to Arkansas. He bought it anyway — and then bought Murfie, a bankrupt Wisconsin startup, inheriting roughly a million CDs belonging to strangers. What followed was copper thieves, a pandemic lockdown that stranded his shipping containers, a running battle with Pine Bluff's zoning office, and a feud with Go Forward Pine Bluff, the tax-funded nonprofit he believed was blocking him at every turn. Then an $890,000 windfall landed in his bank account, and he bought 74 parcels at a tax auction, making him one of the largest landowners in town. Writer Max Read dubbed him "The Man Who Bought Pine Bluff, Arkansas." Four years later, he's still there.Subscribe to our newsletter: https://jedlipinski.substack.com/ Connect with Jed Lipinski:https://www.instagram.com/gonesouthpodcast/https://www.facebook.com/groups/gonesouthpodcast/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jed-lipinski/

Rather than replacing the original, it offers a separate but familiar experience, wrapped in a new visual style and ready to be taken on the go with the Game Boy Advance. Joining Sean, Gigi, and Bridge today is writer, DJ, and podcaster Matt "Stormageddon" (@djstormageddon.com), here to share why Nightmare in Dream Land might be his favorite Kirby game of all time. Guests in Londinium, 92 AD: Gaius and Germanicus. The Corruption of Hollywood and the Sacred Canon. Regarding the Hollywood remake of the Odyssey, Germanicus characterizes the production as a "Hail Mary" by a "cesspool of corruption" known as Hollywood to remain relevant while "hemorrhaging talent." He labels the film an "abomination" and a "short shrift" to a sacred work of literature. Despite this, he sees a "beacon of hope" in the possibility that the film's failure will drive the younger generation to seek out the original texts. He emphasizes that the Iliad and Odyssey were not "fantasy" but the civilizational canon of Greco-Roman antiquity, acting as "sacred works" that dictated how to live and think. Gaius notes that these epics were originally meant to be "chanted" or "sung" and that they traditionally ended with "calm after the violence" rather than mere spectacle. They conclude that Hollywood has "cheapened our sensibility" and "raped our legacy" by failing to respect these foundational pillars of Western identity. (3)

He played in the big leagues, wore the Red Sox jersey, and had 14 surgeries trying to keep a dream alive. Then the career ended. And in the silence that followed, Ryan Kalish almost didn't make it through.  Ryan is not the kind of guest I typically have on this show. He doesn't have a bestselling book or a company that just crossed a hundred million. What he has is a story that stopped me cold on Instagram months ago. I was scrolling and I saw this guy on a street somewhere in the world, walking up to a man who was homeless, and he bathed him and gave him a haircut and got him some food. I thought: who is that? I looked him up. And I thought, "I have to have him on. "Ryan brings something to this conversation that is rare: the honesty of a man who was at rock bottom and didn't dress it up. He talks about the dark thoughts after his career ended, the substances he used to self-soothe, the spiritual calling that kept finding him even when he ran from it, and the moment sitting by a river in Austin, Texas, where it all clicked. He has now served orphans, refugees, and vulnerable people across Indonesia, Thailand, Uganda, India, Jordan, Tanzania, Egypt, and more, largely on his own dime. His 70-year-old father is his cameraman. I ask Ryan questions I think most people are afraid to ask: what does it actually feel like to do this? Is it lonely? Is it worth it? What did you have to let go of to get here? And I push Ryan on whether the hit he gets from feeding someone who's starving compares to circling the bases after a home run. His answer stops the conversation.    Here's what you'll gain from this episode: What to do When You're Feeling Helpless: The reframe that unlocks everything for anyone sitting in a hard season wondering what to do next. Your Old Identity Has to Die: What Ryan had to pluck out of himself to make room for who he was becoming, and why the most painful part of reinvention is also the most necessary. You Don't Have to Be Qualified: Why the people least likely to think they can make a difference are exactly the ones who should Collective Consciousness: Learn about the only thing that will actually change the world at scale.   This is an episode you will share with everyone you know! Can the LA Olympics in 2028 be a catalyst for clean energy? How the games could remake transport, power and clean air in the car capital of America

    The Energy Gang

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2026 47:01

Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, an event that poses formidable logistical challenges. To put it in terms that will be familiar to many Americans, it is the equivalent of seven Super Bowls happening every day, in one of the world's biggest urban economies. That means huge demands on the city's transport and energy systems. But it also creates a rare opportunity to use the games as a catalyst to accelerate investment that could leave the city cleaner, more resilient and better connected long after the closing ceremony. In this episode, host Ed Crooks talks to Matt Petersen, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, or LACI. Matt explains how LACI has been using the run-up to the Games as a convening point for public and private sector action. The focus has been on transportation electrification, clean energy deployment and building infrastructure that can help Los Angeles cope with an influx of visitors while improving the quality of life for residents in the long term.Transport is key. Los Angeles is sometimes described as the car capital of the world, and transport will be the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the Games. EV sales and charging infrastructure are growing fast. Even so, LACI's modelling suggests that Los Angeles still needs more people using buses and rail, as well as better first-mile and last-mile options, from e-bike share to EV car-share schemes, if it wants to hit its climate targets. The conversation also explores the less visible systems that support electrification and emissions reductions for transport. Matt points to the electrification of freight, the build-out of charging depots, battery-backed fast charging, and experiments with flexible grid connections that can bring new infrastructure online faster. Those developments are central to whether Los Angeles can make room for more EVs and rising power demand without waiting years for grid upgrades.Too often, host cities for the Olympics promise transformative benefits that never fully materialise. Matt's case is that Los Angeles has a better shot than most, partly because it is not building a wave of new permanent venues, and partly because the most important investments are in systems the city needs anyway: electric buses, cleaner freight, charging networks, transit improvements, shade for riders in extreme heat, and cleaner air in communities that have long borne the brunt of pollution. Can a deadline like LA 2028 accelerate progress on some of the hardest problems in urban decarbonization? For Matt, the real prize is not a few weeks of smooth operations during the Games, but a lasting legacy of economic opportunity and lower emissions.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
