This show will make you think about how you parent. Lenore Skenazy became a media sensation a few years ago when she published a column describing how she allowed her nine-year old child to ride the New York subway system. Alone. Overnight she became a topic of discussion on television shows, radio call-ins, and parent play groups everywhere. Some viewed her as the World’s Worst Mom. Others viewed her as simply parenting with practical wisdom. And, thus, Lenore’s “Free-Range Kids” platform was born. Join in the conversation today as Lenore shares thoughts on what exactly it means to raise “Free-range” kids. She shares insights about just how safe kids really are today (a lot safer than kids were when we were all growing up!), why failure is a good thing, and why it’s critically important for a child to experience their own world without Mom or Dad constantly hovering over them. Lenore Skenazy and host Jim Higley ask: How were you brought up? What kind of supervision did you have? (What about your parents before you?) How does your own upbringing differ from that of your children or your parents? “If we only think of childhood in terms of risk, we’re only thinking about half of the equation, ” explains Skenazy. “You have to think in terms of risk/benefit.” She further shares compelling wisdom about what a child actually loses when a parent places rigid boundaries around their world. Have you been placing these detrimental types of boundaries on your child? “Our children are safer and more competent than pop culture wants us to believe,” says Lenore Skenazy. Are you afraid of your child being abducted? Of their grades falling behind? Of them failing in every conceivable way without your constant guidance? Listen in and hear what Lenore has to say. Even if you don’t agree with everything she has to say, her perspective on parenting will get you thinking! References from this Podcast: Free-Range Kids Website
Two experts, Asha Dornfest and Jim Higley helped us discover how simplifying our lives – reducing choices, obligations, stuff, and the guilt about trying to do it it all – can open up more time for play and joy.
In this episode, we talk about Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg's new book, Lean In. The book has been widely seen as a call to action for women, but we discuss the lessons for men and dads. We're joined by award-winning author, speaker, and TV personality Jim Higley who shares his story of being a single father, a cancer survivor, and advocate for men's health awareness.
Jim Higley was a typical middle-age dad whose world, overnight, went from the soccer field sidelines cheering on his children to the sidelines of life. At the age of forty-four, Jim became the fourth member of his immediate family to receive a diagnosis of cancer and suddenly found himself with an entire summer removed from all of life’s obligations as he allowed his body to heal after surgery. Thanks to a wise friend’s promise, however, that summer of physical healing transformed into the rediscovery of several forgotten life lessons-and one life-changing gift that had been quietly waiting for him for over thirty years. The single father of three is an insightful storyteller who writes about the experiences found in the nooks and crannies of everyday life from a dad’s perspective. Described as “Martha Stewart meets MacGyver,” after a 23-year career in corporate America Jim zipped up his briefcase and became a fulltime stay-at-home dad. Since then-in addition to writing-his world centers around carpools, bake sales, attempting to make school play costumes with a glue gun, and simply being home and available. 24/7. Jim is the inaugural World’s Greatest Dad for Man of the House magazine. His kids, however, are requesting a recount.

Far too many people think that fathers are superfluous, optional, and disposal, including some fathers themselves. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as my guests discuss. My first guest is Julia Espy, who is the author of If I Were Your Daddy, Here Is What You Would Learn. A single mother herself, she interviewed 35 men seeking their … Read more about this episode...
