Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Logan (2017) Review kicks off this week's episode of Born to Watch, and boys… this is not your usual superhero movie.Whitey, Gow and Damo head into the wasteland of 2029 to talk about the final outing for Wolverine, and right from the start the big question is asked, is this actually a superhero movie at all… or is it a western wearing claws? After nearly two decades of Hugh Jackman playing Logan, the X-Men universe throws away the colourful costumes, the CGI sky beams and the multiverse nonsense, and replaces it with dust, silence and a dying hero who just wants it all to end. This week, the boys dive into: • Why Logan feels closer to a Clint Eastwood western than a Marvel film • The emotional weight of Professor X and Logan's relationship • Laura (X-23) stealing the movie without saying much at all • The brutality and why the R-rating actually matters • Whether this is the greatest superhero film ever madeWhitey argues that this is the natural evolution of comic book movies, a character study about regret and aging rather than saving the world. Gow admits he expected CGI chaos and instead got a real film. Damo questions the timeline, the X-Men continuity and whether the emotional ending works if it doesn't match the earlier movies. The discussion also covers how Logan was clearly inspired by classic westerns, especially Shane, and why the movie works best when it forgets it's part of a franchise entirely.Hugh Jackman delivers possibly his best performance as a broken warrior who no longer heals, drinks too much, hurts constantly and carries decades of guilt. Patrick Stewart's Professor X adds heart and tragedy, while the road-trip structure slowly turns the film into something surprisingly intimate. And then… there's the ending. No big sky battle. No final speech.Just consequences. The boys debate whether Logan's death lands emotionally, if Laura is the future of the character, and why this film changed how studios approached superhero movies afterwards. Is Logan the peak of comic-book cinema? Or just a really good western accidentally starring a superhero?JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Logan the best comic book movie ever made? Does the R-rating improve superhero films? Is this secretly just a western?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and be part of the show.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.Don't forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and follow Born to Watch for your weekly dose of nostalgia, arguments and completely unnecessary movie rankings.#Logan #BornToWatch #MoviePodcast #Wolverine #HughJackman #XMen #FilmReview #WesternMovies #SuperheroMovies #MovieDebate

We kick things off with the star-studded drama Anniversary. This thriller (starring Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) explores what happens when a family falls apart just as a mysterious new movement sweeps the country. It's tense, emotional, and it definitely made us think twice about our next family reunion!Fun Flix Fact: Despite the heavy on-screen drama, the cast spent their breaks having high-stakes board game tournaments on set. Apparently, Kyle Chandler is a formidable Monopoly player and kept the bank on lockdown between takes!Next, we're hitting the road for Crime 101, the gritty heist thriller that everyone's talking about. It's a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a brilliant jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) along the Pacific Coast Highway.Fun Flix Fact: This film marks a massive on-screen reunion for Hemsworth and Ruffalo. To prepare for their rivalry, they avoided each other on set for the first few weeks of filming to keep their on-screen tension as authentic as possible! If you're a fan of a good fright, you'll love our review of Whistle. When a group of teenagers discovers an ancient, cursed whistle, they inadvertently summon an entity that hunts anyone who hears its call. It's "don't make a sound" taken to a terrifying new level.Fun Flix Fact: Director Corin Hardy is a legend when it comes to practical effects. He insisted that the "Creature" be played by a physical performer in a custom suit rather than using CGI, meaning the terrified reactions from the young cast are often very, very real! For this week's Anniversary Corner, we're hacking into the mainframe to celebrate 25 years of the slick, stylish Swordfish. Starring Halle Berry, John Travolta, and Hugh Jackman, it's the ultimate early-2000s tech-thriller.Fun Flix Fact: The film's incredible opening explosion was filmed using a "bullet-time" rig featuring 135 different cameras. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and complex practical stunts ever choreographed for a film! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Press play for the friendliest film discussions this side of Hollywood! The truth about intermittent fasting

From TikTok and Instagram influencers to celebrities like Hugh Jackman and Kourtney Kardashian, intermittent fasting has gotten a lot of hype. The diet restricts what time you eat rather than what or how much you eat. The idea is that short periods of fasting cause your body to burn through stored fat reserves. But is that conventional wisdom true? And can it really contribute to weight loss? Regina G. Barber and Rachel Carlson tackle those questions — plus why some researchers are rethinking how to protect people's mental health when talking to chatbots and how ultra-endurance running changes the human body.Have a scientific question you want us to answer? Your Diet Sucks
Does Intermittent Fasting Actually Do Anything?

Your Diet Sucks

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2026 81:59

Intermittent fasting is the most Googled diet-related term on the planet, except everyone who does it will tell you it's not a diet. It's a protocol. An eating window. A lifestyle. An optimization hack. Definitely, absolutely, under no circumstances a diet. You just don't eat for sixteen hours. Totally different. In this episode, we trace IF from ancient religious fasting traditions through its secularization and commodification, afrom Martin Berkhan's Leangains forum and its tagline ("fuck breakfast") to Michael Mosley's BBC documentary, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine physique, and Jack Dorsey describing his weekend-long fasts as "hallucinating" like that's a selling point. We walk through how a Nobel Prize in yeast biology became a justification for skipping breakfast, why Jason Fung's The Obesity Code scored 31% on scientific accuracy and still became the IF bible, and how the fasting app market turned one simple rule into a multimillion-dollar industry. Then we get into what the science actually says. We break down the claimed mechanisms — metabolic switching, autophagy, insulin sensitivity — and look honestly at where the evidence lands. Spoiler: the mechanisms are real, but the confidence far outpaces the human data. The first direct measurement of autophagy in humans was published in 2025. Mouse metabolism runs seven times faster than ours. And the landmark Liu et al. trial in the New England Journal of Medicine found that time-restricted eating is no better than regular caloric restriction for weight loss. You're not metabolic switching. You're just eating less.We also dig into what IF means for active people (no performance benefit across any exercise type, real risk of under-fueling and RED-S, and a protein distribution problem that no eight-hour window can solve), what the AHA, ADA, NIA, and ISSN actually say about it, and the robust research linking IF to eating disorder behaviors across all genders — including a landmark study showing that fasting was a stronger predictor of binge eating disorder than any other form of dietary restraint. Fasting is listed in the DSM-5 as a compensatory behavior. Just because you give it a different vocabulary doesn't mean your body experiences it differently.Your body is smarter than any fasting app. Also, breakfast slaps..This Episode's Sponsors:rabbit — Code YDSFEB for 10% offOsmia — Code YDS20 for 20% offTailwind — Code YOURDIET20 for 20% offMicrocosm Coaching — Book a free consultationFull references, episode archive, and our advertising ethics policy at yourdietsuckspodcast.comHosted by: Zoë Rom & Kylee Van Horn, RDN

Moving ahead in our series to Pearl Jam's highly regarded 1995 tour covering the first of two nights from Milwaukee's Summerfest. This year saw many changes for the band including a new drummer with Jack Irons, no Ticketmaster venues played or corporate sponsorships promoted and a change within their sound to fit what they were evolving into. This Milwaukee show comes at a time that was pretty controversial - it was the first show in two weeks since Ed was stricken with food poisoning at their Polo Fields show in San Francisco. The incident was seen as a turning point for the band that was dealing with their own internal struggles. It was either get on the same page as a team, or come to terms with the reality of a possible break up. This show allows us to dig into some topics about what the band's future looked like and how they were about to overcome the challenges laid ahead for them. Three days after would be the famed Soldier Field show, so the turnaround in order to get on the same page happens quick. This show will deal with a little bit of ring rust, but after a speech where Ed addresses media spreading rumors about him and the band, the show is kicked into the gear that we love from 1995 performances. Not For You, Alive and Blood are the headlining moments, but the show stealer comes from a duo named Lightning And Thunder well known throughout the upper midwest for covering Neil Diamond songs. With the movie Song Sung Blue having recently come out featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson that chronicles their journey, a big part of it included this moment where they sang Forever In Blue Jeans with Ed in front of a crowd of 30,000. We'll also dig into Ed's vocals at the time and how mentors of his encouraged him to limit his screaming in order to preserve longevity. We discuss whether it would've been wise to take advice from either Neil Young or Roger Daltrey, and perhaps share a baseball analogy along with it. As a matter of fact, there are many baseball analogies featured in this episode! Entschieden sentimentaler und warmherziger geht es in „Song Sung Blue“ zu, der bereits im Dezember gestartet ist. Mike and Jesse are back to break down the latest movement in the sports card market as we head toward the Super Bowl. First, Jesse shares a "cautionary tale" involving a massive rip of Marvel cards and the hunt for a Hugh Jackman auto. Then, the guys look at the disrespect in the NFL market, specifically comparing Sam Darnold's prices to Josh Allen's. Despite a stellar season and being the NFC Champ, Darnold's cards are a fraction of the price of many other quarterbacks. Are collectors missing the window? They also discuss the "dirt cheap" pricing on Cooper Kupp and the heating-up market for Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Later, they discuss the massive PSA Spotlight Auction starting this week and running through February 7 featuring cards directly from the personal collections of legends like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Eli Manning. They analyze the value of inscription cards, seeing exactly what Tom Brady wrote on his own rookie card, and debate if provenance from a player's own collection is the new grail for collectors. There are also plenty of other cards in the auction including a special Mewtwo Pokemon card. The auction's final hour will be broadcast LIVE on the SCN eBay Live channel. Finally, they tackle the Bill Belichick Hall of Fame snub and answer your mailbag questions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In 2017, Hugh Jackman led an ensemble cast in a musical based on the life of circus ringmaster P.T. Barnum, which proved to be a smash hit at the box office. Co-starring Zac Effron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Paul Sparks, and including Zendaya, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Keala Settle, Sam Humphrey, Eric Anderson, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as members of Barnum's freakshow, with songs by Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, this film directed by Michael Gracey earned multiple awards and nominations, including a Grammy for its soundtrack. However, critics were mixed, praising its music and production, but roasting the film's historical revisionism and melodramatic approach. With a stage musical coming to the West End later this year, will our hosts decide that the greatest show on Earth is The Greatest Showman? Or would we rather run away to join the circus than have to watch it again?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com    You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. I investigate whether Candace Story 7 is really Lisa Barlow's secret Finsta account and break down the drama over who actually started RHOSLC—was it Lisa or was it Mary Cosby like producer Noah Sampton claims? Then I expose Jared Osmond's ex-wife Heather Osmond's explosive lawsuit alleging he cheated on her and hid millions in assets during their divorce with help from Brandon Fugel, the Skinwalker Ranch owner. I finally piece together the full story behind Meredith Marks calling Brittani Bateman a pedophile supporter on the plane—it all connects to an anti-Semitic nail tech who said Jewish people are pedophiles who escape to Israel, and I have the ABC News coverage and the voice memo Brittany sent apologizing. Plus Brittany announces she will NEVER film with Meredith again, the Seth Marks cheating allegations that Jared allegedly knows about, why Heather Gay still has a photo of Meredith's secret boyfriend "Rolling Thunder," and Aaron Osmond's anti-LGBTQ voting record as a Utah Senator. I also reveal what Taylor Swift's "tiny violin" text to Blake Lively tells us about her song "Cancelled"—it's about Justin Baldoni, not Blake, and I explain how it connects to Hugh Jackman, who was at that secret meeting with Taylor and Blake and is now exposed for his affair with Sutton Foster that was "Broadway's worst kept secret" while his wife Debra Lee Furness was the last to know after 27 years. I play you Mary Cosby's shocking sermon compilation where she claims to be God and the reincarnation of Mama. Then I pivot to RHUGT Road Trip tea about Porsha Williams and Vicki Gunvalson's fight, the full Brooklyn Beckham estrangement story including DJ Fat Tony's revelation about the Victoria Beckham wedding dance disaster, why I believe Megan Markle and Prince Harry advised Brooklyn to go public, and Tim Busfield's police interview audio where the kids say nothing happened.Support the showDana is on Cameo!Follow Dana: @Wilkey_Dana$25,000 Song - Apple Music$25,000 Song - SpotifyTo support the show and listen to full episodes, become a member on PatreonTo send Dana information, show requests and sponsorships reach out to our new email: dishingdramadana@gmail.comDana's YouTube Channel

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 342: Amy Vincent, ASC Cinematographer Amy Vincent, ASC feels like she's reached the place where she wants to be, working on the kinds of films she likes. Vincent and director Craig Brewer have collaborated on several music-forward films, including Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, and a Footloose remake in 2011. Throughout the years, Vincent and Brewer have created a shared cinematic language built on deep trust. Their latest collaboration, Song Sung Blue, is a biopic about a Neil Diamond tribute band. Craig Brewer had seen the original documentary Song Sung Blue at a film festival, and knew that he wanted to adapt the story of Mike and Claire Sardina, who formed a Neil Diamond tribute band called Lightning and Thunder. To bring their world to life, Vincent's primary mission was to protect Brewer's instinctual, writer-driven process. While many modern productions retreat to the controlled environment of a soundstage, Song Sung Blue leaned into the grit of reality. The film was shot entirely on practical locations in New Jersey, doubling for Milwaukee. Vincent admits she was initially reluctant to embrace the cramped quarters of real homes, but the shot design was quickly informed by the limited space. Pre-production tests on location with period light fixtures and wood paneling on the actors' hair and makeup also gave the entire production team a chance to see the film's vision come to life. For the film's musical sequences in bars and on stage, Vincent made a deliberate technical choice to embrace the performance lighting. By choosing a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the lighting fixtures themselves could be part of the composition. Rather than hiding the sources, she embraced lens flares and visible fixtures, treating the lighting as a character in the performance spaces. This added an authentic "stage" texture to the Lightning and Thunder shows. The visual language of the film was born long before the first day of principal photography. Vincent was present during the actors' vocal recordings and rehearsals, watching how leads Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson interacted. She points to “Play Me,” a scene where the characters sit back-to-back on a piano bench after they first meet, as a product of this observation. “That all started for me by watching the actors physically moving and singing in those initial rehearsals.” By the time they reached the set, the camera movement was already a natural extension of their physical performances. For Vincent, Song Sung Blue is a project where the technical execution perfectly aligns with a narrative she believes in. “Craig is aligned with the idea of telling stories about people who dream beyond their means,” she says. “I always love that. It's something I hope I get to continue doing.” See Song Sung Blue in theaters and streaming on VOD. Mike and Jesse are back to break down the NFL playoff picture and what it means for the sports card market. They discuss which quarterbacks have the most price upside heading into Wild Card Weekend (is Bryce Young a buy?!) and which stars they are looking to sell immediately, including Aaron Rodgers and Trevor Lawrence. Later, the guys welcome Aaron Abrams (25:10), Director of Entertainment and Pop Culture Cards at Topps, for a fascinating look into the non-sports boom. Aaron shares the chaotic, cross-country story of how Topps secured the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman dual on-card autos for Marvel Chrome, discusses the "Product of the Year" success of Disney Chrome, and teases a massive surprise coming in Pixar Gold. The guys close out the episode by looking at the final Gem Rate numbers from 2025, reflecting on surprises in the card grading market from last year. And then answer a bunch of mailbag questions including everything from their favorite products of 2025 to chest bumps in the wild and why baseball got the short end of the stick with Exquisite Collection. Sean and Amanda have an action-packed show today where they cover three new releases. Before diving in, they react to the recent trailers for ‘The Odyssey' and ‘Avengers: Doomsday' and quickly discuss ‘Zootopia 2' and ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash' (1:38). Then, they discuss Paul Feig's ‘The Housemaid,' starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, which they found disappointing and prompts a discussion about what type of movies are being made for women in 2025 (9:09). Next, they talk through ‘Anaconda,' starring Jack Black, which they describe as a cynical, depressing exercise in IP franchise filmmaking (38:37). Finally, they briefly touch on ‘Song Sung Blue,' a musical drama about a Neil Diamond tribute band starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson (50:00), before director Craig Brewer joins Sean to break down how his filmmaking career started, explain why music plays such a profound role in his work, and tell a fascinating story about the lengthy process behind casting Hudson (1:01:35).
