This episode of Netflix vs. Cinema tackle the big question: should you splurge for the big screen or save your pennies for the big stream? Hosts Tosin Ajayi, Sharon Bollen, and London correspondent Holly Nesling review a packed lineup of high-stakes thrillers, groundbreaking documentaries, and fan-favorite period dramas to help you decide where your money is best spent. In the Cinema Crime 101: Tosin reviews the latest heist thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. He breaks down why this is Hemsworth's best performance yet, shifting away from his "superhero" persona into a meticulously planned high-class thief. Cold Storage: Sharon takes us into a "throwback" sci-fi romo that pits Liam Neeson against a deadly prehistoric fungus. From Skylab crashes to quarantine chaos, find out why this fun "romp" earned a high rating. On the Streaming Platforms Mr. Nobody Against Putin (BBC iPlayer): A powerful must-watch. The team discusses this Storyville documentary filmed secretly by a Russian teacher, documenting the chilling militarization of schools following the invasion of Ukraine. Bridgerton Season 4 (Netflix): Holly dives into the latest romance in the ton. The trio discusses the "Cinderella-esque" arc of Benedict Bridgerton and whether the show's shift from "smutty" to storytelling is an improvement. Inside the Industry The team also dives into the fallout from the BAFTAs, discussing the controversy of John Davidson's Tourette's powered racial slur directed at Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo. They also address recent viral feedback from their TikTok channel, debating the marketing genius of Emerald Fennell and the intersection of "bad spelling and online abuse." This Week's Verdict: Netflix takes the crown in a high-quality week where "nothing was crap," thanks largely to the emotional impact of Mr. Nobody Against Putin. Is Netflix killing cinemas? Each week we weigh up what we've seen in cinemas with what we've watched online at home and figure out which provided the best time. At least, we did before COVID jumped in and declared Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney + and friends the winner. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're continuing our new “Fast February” series, where we cover the movies that made Vin Diesel a star and taught the world to live their lives one quarter mile at a time, The Fast & Furious franchise! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Bill Mueller discuss 2003's awkward attempt to recapture the magic of the surprisingly successful first movie, 2 Fast 2 Furious! An incredible title! Those silly visor hats! Pepsi and NOS product placement! Trying to pick up girls during a dangerous undercover mission! A Sound Designer-approved audio mix! Loud, somewhat gaudy visuals thanks to that clumsy early thousands aesthetic! A possible influence on the Wachowskis' Speed Racer movie! A larger budget but a less tangible story with somehow even cringier lines! A third act you'll barely remember! The introduction of characters who would go on to be staples of the series! John Singleton trying his hand at directing a silly blockbuster! Race obstacles that would lead to expensive automotive repairs! A great car jump stunt that's wasted due to poor editing and unnecessary visual effects! A cast that includes a returning Paul Walker, James Remar, Eva Mendes, a pre-Yellowstone Cole Hauser, Mark Boone Junior, Devon Aoki, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson starting out as somewhat of a Dom Toretto wannabe before finding his character as the movie goes on! The entry of the series with possibly the least sense of "family," you never realized you could miss Vin Diesel so much! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Crime 101, Psycho Killer, and the original Hunger Games quadrilogy! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris and Tim Gardiner, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from two filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Twitter, Bluesky, or Letterboxd @actionharris. This episode's guest, Bill Mueller, can be found on Bluesky. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. Chris and Neil are back to wax semi-poetic about two recent movies. First, they go back a little bit in 2025 and talk Rental Family starring the venerable Brendan Fraser. Then, after news, they wear gloves and try not to kill anyone in Crime 101 starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, Monica Babaro and even Nick Nolte. Is Rental Family even worth renting? Is Crime 101 a masterclass in failure? The answer lies in front of you. It only takes a few clicks. Don't be a square. Listen. Or not. I'm hungry. Parents of children who are 'short sleepers' — kids genetically programmed to survive on four hours of rest (and pure chaos) — we see you. We unpack the science on Parenting Out Loud this week of why some kids are simply 'built different'... and why the rest of us are drowning in caffeine. Plus, we need to talk about the fetishisation of the 'Involved Father'. From Chris Hemsworth’s commemorative tattoos to the rise of the ‘Swiftie Dad,’ why does society throw a parade when a man does the bare minimum, yet side-eye Bobby Cannavale for skipping the Golden Globes to go to a reptile expo? (Justice for Bobby, tbh). And, ex-One Directioner Zayn Malik is single-handedly causing Tooth Fairy inflation, but the real digital horror story is the school Facebook group. Is opting out of the 'digital footprint' a smart move, or does it just make you the ‘weird’ privacy parent who everyone is accidentally tagging anyway? Our Recommendations:

CRIME 101 hit theaters with zero hype. Unlike HOPPERS, PROJECT HAIL MARY, or THE ODYSSEY, CRIME 101 got almost zero promotion... but, in this case, that's a good thing. The ensemble cast including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan and Halle Berry (among others) is outstanding, the directing is incredible and the writing is even better. So let's talk about it...

We kick things off with the star-studded drama Anniversary. This thriller (starring Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) explores what happens when a family falls apart just as a mysterious new movement sweeps the country. It's tense, emotional, and it definitely made us think twice about our next family reunion!Fun Flix Fact: Despite the heavy on-screen drama, the cast spent their breaks having high-stakes board game tournaments on set. Apparently, Kyle Chandler is a formidable Monopoly player and kept the bank on lockdown between takes!Next, we're hitting the road for Crime 101, the gritty heist thriller that everyone's talking about. It's a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a brilliant jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) along the Pacific Coast Highway.Fun Flix Fact: This film marks a massive on-screen reunion for Hemsworth and Ruffalo. To prepare for their rivalry, they avoided each other on set for the first few weeks of filming to keep their on-screen tension as authentic as possible! If you're a fan of a good fright, you'll love our review of Whistle. When a group of teenagers discovers an ancient, cursed whistle, they inadvertently summon an entity that hunts anyone who hears its call. It's "don't make a sound" taken to a terrifying new level.Fun Flix Fact: Director Corin Hardy is a legend when it comes to practical effects. He insisted that the "Creature" be played by a physical performer in a custom suit rather than using CGI, meaning the terrified reactions from the young cast are often very, very real! For this week's Anniversary Corner, we're hacking into the mainframe to celebrate 25 years of the slick, stylish Swordfish. Starring Halle Berry, John Travolta, and Hugh Jackman, it's the ultimate early-2000s tech-thriller.Fun Flix Fact: The film's incredible opening explosion was filmed using a "bullet-time" rig featuring 135 different cameras. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and complex practical stunts ever choreographed for a film! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Crime 101 Review: A $90M Crime Noir That Plays It Too SafeJose (Cupcake) and Mike (TheWilldaBeast) put Crime 101 (2026) under the microscope — Amazon's star-studded crime thriller adapted from Don Winslow's novel and directed by documentary filmmaker Bart Layton.
Belated but better late than never: Ticket Stubs officially kicks off 2026 with a double feature of icy, unnerving thrillers. This time around, we pair Otto Preminger's paranoid vanishing act Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) with David Fincher's bleak, meticulous adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Across decades and continents, both films ask the same quietly terrifying question: what happens when no one believes you? Join us as we unravel questions of identity, credibility, obsession, and the cold machinery of institutions that would rather look away than look closer. Before the mystery deepens, our Blue Plate Special returns with the usual cinematic smorgasbord. We share thoughts on new releases Send Help and Crime 101, take time to remember the lives and careers of Catherine O'Hara and Bud Cort, and hear Levi's early-stage reflections on diving into David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest. We also offer what are almost certainly already-outdated predictions for Super Bowl 60—because what's a new year without at least one confidently incorrect take? Whether you're here for missing children, hackers with dragons tattooed on their backs, or just the comfortable chaos of our opening chatter, we're glad to be starting 2026 with you. A week after the Super Bowl and we finally got The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer, took long enough. Also Warner Bros seems to finally relent and gives Paramount 7 days to try again. On this episode of The Movie Podcast, Daniel and Shahbaz sit-down in Toronto with CRIME 101 Writer and Director Bart Layton to discuss his new crime thriller. Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, the film weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices–and the realisation that there can be no turning back. Life is like a jam-packed, extremely random box of chocolates on this week's episode of Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed: WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Emerald Fennell's 14-year-old-girl fanfic version of the classic Emily Brontë novel is high on style but low on substance. Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie are a gorgeous Heathcliff and Cathy, but there's not much tension between them. See it for the dresses, though. In theaters. GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON'T DIE. An inspired title for a blast of a movie. Gore Verbinski's time-travel action comedy is zany, but it also has something serious to say about our reliance on technology. (Podcasts are OK, though.) Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, Juno Temple, Zazie Beets and Michael Peña star. In theaters. CRIME 101. A well-crafted, well-acted LA noir in the spirit of "Heat." Chris Hemsworth stars as a jewel thief hitting targets along the 101 freeway. Mark Ruffalo is the police detective on his tail. Halle Berry is an insurance broker who gets caught up in his scheme. One of us liked this a lot more than the other. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE. Two weeks in a row! We're getting back to normal. Among the topics we discussed were the Spirit Awards this weekend, performers leaving Casey Wasserman's talent management company, the Winter Olympics, and the deaths of James Van Der Beek and Bud Cort. Nick is joined again by film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy for a packed round of new movie reviews. They break down the latest take on Wuthering Heights starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, the chaotic sci-fi satire Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die with Sam Rockwell, and the thriller Crime 101 featuring Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry. They also weigh in on the animated sports comedy Goat, with plenty of agreement, disagreement, and side tangents along the way. Esmeralda Leon jumps in later for a spirited conversation about Friday the 13th superstitions, which quickly turns into a deep dive on Jason Voorhees and his most memorable kills. There's a firm stance taken on the fact that he absolutely did not take Manhattan, along with a playful breakdown of how Jason and Freddy Krueger operate very differently and why those differences fuel their long-running feud. It's movie talk with a side of horror nerdery, exactly as it should be. [Ep 429]
One master thief (Chris Hemsworth) is planning one final score to steal some expensive jewels, one burned out, veteran cop (Oscar-nominee Mark Ruffalo) is on the trail to catch him after a rash of recent robberies, and one disillusioned insurance broker (Oscar-winner Halle Berry) gets involved to claim her own piece of the action....and ALL of this takes place along Highway 101 which runs through Los Angelese. From director Bart Layton (American Animals), this sprawling LA crime saga also co-stars several other Oscar-nominees including Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Nick Nolte, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
