This week on the pod, we're heading back to the Island to unpack Lost Season 4, Episode 4: “Eggtown.” It's a Kate-centric hour that blends domestic fantasy with legal thriller energy, as the flash-forwards finally start filling in the gaps of the Oceanic Six storyline. We break down what “Eggtown” reveals about Kate's need to run—even when she's trying to stay—why her off-Island life feels like a gilded cage, and how the episode uses motherhood as both redemption and self-deception. On the Island, alliances shift as Locke's camp fractures, Hurley's loyalty is tested, and Ben continues to manipulate literally everyone in the room. We dig into the moral chess match between Ben and Locke, the thematic meaning behind Kate's trial, and how this episode quietly sets the emotional stakes for the rest of Season 4.Then we shift gears into this weekend's new theatrical releases:First up, Gore Verbinski's Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die, starring Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, and Juno Temple. We talk about Verbinski returning to large-scale genre filmmaking with a chaotic, high-concept sci-fi premise, Rockwell doing what Rockwell does best—existential panic with charm—and whether the film balances spectacle with heart or leans too far into cosmic weirdness.Next, Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights, led by Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. We get into Fennell's gothic sensibilities, the challenge of reinterpreting such a brooding literary classic for modern audiences, and whether this version amplifies the romance, the toxicity, or both. Is it a lush prestige drama, a fever dream, or something more divisive? Finally, we break down Bart Layton's Crime 101, starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, and Barry Keoghan. A slick crime thriller with serious star power, this one promises cat-and-mouse tension and morally gray characters. We discuss whether Layton's documentary instincts sharpen the realism, how the ensemble chemistry plays out, and if the film delivers on its pulpy premise.Time travel, tragic romance, high-stakes heists—it's a packed episode. Be sure to keep coming back every week for more Talkin' Lost, since next week is a big one with the Constant, and as always be sure to subscribe for more content from the #talkintvpodcast

Lucy Fenwick Elliott talks to director Bart Layton about his new film, Crime 101.  Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, Crime 101 weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices–and the realization that there can be no turning back. Adapted from Don Winslow's acclaimed novella of the same name, the film is written and directed by Bart Layton (American Animals, The Imposter). Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte round out the cast.  Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Follow us on Spotify. We have no excuses for why it took us this long, especially since it's so freaking good.Spoiler warnings ahead, though we're not spoiling the plot so much as fangirling over everything we loved: the design, the art deco interiors, the animation, the callbacks, the VOICE ACTING. (Dear Hollywood, please keep giving Chris Hemsworth all the comedy roles, kthxbye.)We also veer off into tangents about Zootopia 2 and Iron Lung, and hold a mini dreamcasting session about which Marvel actors should play which Transformers characters. Life is like a jam-packed, extremely random box of chocolates on this week's episode of Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed: WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Emerald Fennell's 14-year-old-girl fanfic version of the classic Emily Brontë novel is high on style but low on substance. Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie are a gorgeous Heathcliff and Cathy, but there's not much tension between them. See it for the dresses, though. In theaters. GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON'T DIE. An inspired title for a blast of a movie. Gore Verbinski's time-travel action comedy is zany, but it also has something serious to say about our reliance on technology. (Podcasts are OK, though.) Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, Juno Temple, Zazie Beets and Michael Peña star. In theaters. CRIME 101. A well-crafted, well-acted LA noir in the spirit of "Heat." Chris Hemsworth stars as a jewel thief hitting targets along the 101 freeway. Mark Ruffalo is the police detective on his tail. Halle Berry is an insurance broker who gets caught up in his scheme. One of us liked this a lot more than the other. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE. Two weeks in a row! We're getting back to normal. Among the topics we discussed were the Spirit Awards this weekend, performers leaving Casey Wasserman's talent management company, the Winter Olympics, and the deaths of James Van Der Beek and Bud Cort.

Crime 101 - based on a novella by Don Winslow - lands in cinemas this weekend. It's a crime saga but a surprisingly focused chaaracter drama, with interconeecting threads that lead to quite the convergence in the third act of this movie. This film is being adapted by Bart Layton, who made the critically acclaimed American Animals which I was also a big fan of. Unlike that though, he's now been given a big Hollywood production with big name movie stars and a much, much bigger budget. Does Crime 101 live up to his previously acclaimed work? Find out in this review!Crime 101:Directed by: Bart LaytonScreenplay by: Bart LaytonBased on the novella by: Don WinslowProduced by: Tim Bevan, Dimitri Doganis, Eric Fellner, Benjamin Grayson, Chris Hemsworth, Bart Layton, Shane Salerno, Derin SchlesingerExecutive Producers: Joely Fether, Amelia Granger, Peter Straughan, Bergen SwansonMusic by: Blanck MassDirector of Photography: Erik Alexander WilsonEdited by: Julian Hart, Jacob Secher SchulsingerCasting by: Avy KaufmanProduction Design by: Scott DouganCostume Design by: Jenny EaganCast: Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey HawkinsSynopsis: An elusive thief, eyeing his final score, encounters a disillusioned insurance broker at her own crossroads. "Crime 101" is a slick and engaging thriller featuring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo. Hemsworth portrays a jewel thief who is emotionally conflicted and determined to complete one final heist. Guided by a personal code of ethics, his character refuses to harm anyone and targets only insurance companies with his schemes. The film's impressive supporting cast includes Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro and Nick Nolte who all contribute to the film's strong ensemble dynamic. Bart Layton, a British documentary filmmaker, brings surprisingly taut and effective direction, allowing "Crime 101" to remain engaging even when the plot stretches believability. “Crime 101” is an entertaining action throwback. The animated sports comedy "Goat" is from producer Steph Curry, who also lends his voice to one of the characters. The story centers on a young goat who dreams of competing in "Roarball," an intense and dangerous version of full-contact basketball. The film boasts a talented voice cast, including Caleb McGlaughlin from “Stranger Things,” David Harbour, Jennifer Hudson, Jelly Roll, and Gabrielle Union. "Goat" is a predictable, but family-friendly bit of escapism. "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" is a high-concept, sci-fi comedy that combines the time-loop antics of "Groundhog Day" with the energy of "Terminator." Sam Rockwell stars as a time traveler who repeatedly journeys back from the future, attempting to save humanity from the impending threat of artificial intelligence. Director Gore Verbinski seems to draw inspiration from the eccentric style of the Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The result is a smart and wildly imaginative film, even if it sometimes struggles with pacing and knowing when to wrap things up.

Bodices will be ripped in this week's Take, because we're talking Wuthering Heights. Emerald Fennell heads to the wild and windy moors for a cinematic storm of obsession, repression, lots of rain and, well… let's just say nobody's getting this worked up about the weather alone. Controversially starring Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as Catherine, it's already dividing the critics, so where does Mark stand? The lascivious literary adaptation's director is our guest this week. She joins Simon to talk about the story's sensuality, toxicity, and how much glaring, breathing, and storm-lashed longing is too much glaring, breathing, and storm-lashed longing? She tells us how it felt to realise her teenage dream of bringing her vision for this classic to the screen, and why its tale of love, revenge, and emotional chaos still gets pulses racing. Plus reviews of three more of the week's cinematic offerings. There's Crime 101, Bart Layton's sleek thriller pairing Chris Hemsworth's precision jewel thief with Mark Ruffalo's relentlessly pursuing detective, and proving once again that nobody in LA should ever relax. Whistle brings supernatural horror and the world's worst extracurricular activity, as students discover that cursed ancient Aztec artefacts are best left well alone. And Little Amélie offers something altogether gentler — an animated adaptation of Amélie Nothomb's autobiographical story of childhood, identity, and wonder. All this, plus the box office top 10, a trip to the dizziest heights of humour in the Laughter Lift, and the customary digressions and delights of another top Take. 00:00:00 Show starts 00:08:53 Crime 101 review 00:18:33 Box Office Top 10 00:32:14 Emerald Fennell interview 00:46:27 Wuthering Heights review 01:00:06 Laughter Lift 01:03:11 Little Amelie review 01:08:49 Whistle review You can contact the show by emailing correspondence@kermodeandmayo.com or you can find us on social media, @KermodeandMayo Please take our survey and help shape the future of our show: https://www.kermodeandmayo.com/survey EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal ➼ https://nordvpn.com/take Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee! There's a particular kind of confidence required to make a modern Los Angeles heist movie without flinching at the shadow of “Heat.” It's the cinematic elephant in the room, the reference point that inevitably looms over any story involving meticulous thieves, dogged cops, and asphalt‑level tension. With “Crime 101,” filmmaker Bart Layton acknowledges that lineage without trying to wrestle it. Instead, he builds something adjacent: a grounded, contemporary crime film that uses the genre as a delivery system for deeper questions about identity, status, and obsession.Based on the novella by Don Winslow, “Crime 101” follows a precise, disciplined jewel thief (played by Chris Hemsworth) whose carefully calibrated life begins to fracture as an obsessive LAPD detective (played by Mark Ruffalo) closes in. Sound familiar "Heat" fans? Luckily, we also have other stories running parallel, like Halle Berry as Sharon, a woman boxed in by institutional disrespect and professional diminishment, slowly realizing that the systems she has played by were never designed to reward her. The ensemble is stacked with Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Nick Nolte, and more, but the film's real engine is tone: tense, patient, and uninterested in clean moral answers.READ MORE: ‘Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie': Matt Johnson & Jay McCarrol On Time Travel, Friendship, The Show's 3rd Season, & Filming Without Permits [The Discourse Podcast]Joining The Discourse for two separate interviews, Layton, Hemsworth, and Berry dug into how “Crime 101” consciously avoids Hollywood shorthand while still delivering a propulsive, white‑knuckle ride.
