The day was brand new, it were as if the past had been scrubbed and the world had been reset with some sort of miraculous grace and bright delight. There was a shine, a glimmer to it all. As he wandered through the city streets he wondered and pondered the magic which had allowed for it all to be undone. All the chaos, all the madness, all the pain. How could it simply shine? This was how it should be, the sound of a piano danced atop the breeze in the distance. Milton Jackson and Brian Kage team up with Detroit pioneer Jon Dixon to collaborate on an exquisite deep house cut on Freerange Records. A beautiful, honest track which brings hope and light.

They also touch on the importance of allowing children more freedom to explore and play independently, and analyze the political fallout from the recent Sine Die adjournment in Georgia's legislature. In this conversation, the speakers discuss the implications of tariffs and trade policies under the Trump administration, focusing on market reactions, the evolution of manufacturing, and the proposed Mar-a-Lago Accords. They analyze the effectiveness of these policies, the strategic advantage of China in trade negotiations, and the overall outcomes of Trump's approach to trade, concluding that the lack of clear objectives led to significant failures in achieving desired economic goals.

Bird flu has been found in a sheep for the first time. DEFRA said the case in Yorkshire was on a farm where avian flu was present in captive birds. One ewe tested positive and has been culled, but her lambs and the rest of the small flock of sheep were negative. Surveillance of mammals for avian flu has been stepped up, partly because in the United States many dairy cattle and even some dairy workers, have gone down with the disease. We speak to the chief vet.Avian influenza is of course at the forefront of egg producers' minds at the moment, and free range layers in many parts of the country must now be kept indoors. All week we're taking a closer look at egg production. Today we speak to a free-range egg producer in Wales.A project involving farmers and nature conservationists is celebrating the restoration of 400 "lost" farmland ponds in Essex. A century ago there were more than 17,000 in the county but conservationists say around 10,000 of those have disappeared. We visit a farm which has been part of a big project to restore some of them.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Are we protecting our kids or holding them back? In this episode, Justin talks with Lenore Skenazy about the unintended consequences of overprotection and why kids need to experience risk to build confidence, resilience, and essential life skills. From eliminating stairs in homes to constant parental surveillance, we examine how fear-based parenting is shaping modern childhood—and what we can do to change it. KEY POINTS: The growing trend of designing homes for maximum parental surveillance and risk elimination. Why removing all risks from a child’s life can have long-term negative effects on their mental health and independence. The difference between reasonable safety precautions (e.g., seat belts, helmets) and excessive protection that stifles growth. How parental fear contributes to anxiety, depression, and dependence in kids. Practical ways to introduce independence and calculated risk into children’s lives. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE:"Fear doesn’t prevent death, but it prevents life." KEY INSIGHTS FOR PARENTS: Removing every possible risk doesn't make kids safer—it makes them less capable. Letting children navigate small risks (like climbing stairs, using a knife, or walking to school) helps them build real-world skills. Worrying can feel like an action, but it doesn’t change reality—teaching skills and fostering independence does. Kids don’t need a risk-free life; they need a chance to learn, adapt, and grow. RESOURCES MENTIONED: Let Grow – Free resources for fostering childhood independence. Supervision Not Required podcast – A new podcast on raising confident, capable kids. ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Identify one small area where you can give your child more independence. Teach them practical skills rather than avoiding potential risks. Shift your mindset from "How do I eliminate all risks?" to "How do I prepare my child to handle them?" Connect with other parents who value childhood independence to build confidence in your approach. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Free Range egg producers say the Government's latest measures to combat bird flu don't go far enough. The Chief Vet says that from Sunday, poultry in a further five English counties, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Lancashire, must be brought inside, joining restrictions already imposed in Hull, East and North Yorkshire, York, Norfolk, Suffolk and Shropshire. Gatherings of poultry have also been banned in England, and enhanced biosecurity measures are already in force across the country, but Gary Ford from the British Free Range Egg Producers Association tells us they want a stronger response. The British Trust for Ornithology says there's been an increase in the number of wild birds infected with avian flu, and as many species have had a massive shock to their population, it's all about whether they can recover and how long it will take. All this week we are celebrating rural community champions and today our reporter Sarah Swadling takes us to the winding lanes of the Exe valley in Devon. There a Church of England minister rides her Highland pony to services, and to visit parishioners in their homes.Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Today we are revisiting one of my favourite chats with Deborah Hutton. In this episode, I asked the former international model if the window for my modelling career may have come and gone, and she informed me that, there was no window. Oh well, at least we cleared that up (lol). Deborah is fun. And talented. And driven. And creative. And super smart. And I enjoyed getting to know her (a little). In this organic conversational casserole, we spoke about being an international model at 16 (and the myriad of variables and challenges around that), strategic people vs. freestyle people, experiential learning, knowing who to trust, her three rules for success, identity, self-worth and looks, lifelong learning, her skin cancer journey, saying no to people, feeling ageless, passion projects and lots more. “Nuts and Bolts” - Listen at your peril, but there is an encouragement at the end. Thank you. I really enjoyed the energy of last year's October Surprise month, and the feedback was positive. (The whole message explains why we are doing "nuts and bolts," and there's an encouragement at the end today. So for Season Seven, at least to begin with, we are going to use the same format as we do for our October Surprise month. We will produce three episodes a week in a shorter format. We will test this format to see if it works for heavier content topics and how you all like it. So For instance, we are redoing our signature episode and breaking it up into short segments as long as I have self-control. (LOL our loud) That will come out soon. After that, for new listeners who are trying us out, we will republish all the segments on the same day, so the new listeners can take in as much of that episode as they need to get a flavor of the podcast. I know it doesn't always sound like it, but there is a study that goes into the "heavier content" episodes. To stick to this schedule, we will alternate each week, or at the end of each series, typically Devotionals or other "lighter content." Prayerfully, this will allow for a thorough study of the "heavier content episodes." In our nuts and bolts episodes will also include some new aspects of the ministry: Our extra prayer encouragements. 1. Prayer journals, such as the "Foundational Blocks of Biblical Prayer." It is available on Amazon; just search for the title. 2. We will highlight why and how a prayer journal can help foster your prayer life. 3. We are in the process of creating a 2025 prayer journal right now; we will announce it in two weeks. 4. Wearables - No, not the tech kind! We have some t-shirts and other items to promote prayer. through graphics. You will be able to visit the website www.freerangepreacheronprayer.com and get information on the products Caution! One of the reasons I am doing the "Nuts and Bolts" episodes, well the two reasons, 1. To keep the main episodes short. The workings of the podcast should not impede our goal. 2. This is a faith-based ministry, and not to make money. We receive donations occasionally, even when I don't highlight the donation tab because money is not why we do the podcast. Our goal is to help as much as God ordains Christians in our prayer lives. If I didn't use a journal system myself, I would not advocate their use. The next, "Nuts and Bolts," discusses the advantages of using a journal, but not today. Today, a thought occurred to me that I want to end with. In his sermon titled "WhyPray?" Ligon Duncan tells us that no Bible character ever asks that question. None. I add that they believe in the Bible prayer, period. Second I remembered John 21, at the end of the chapter, no need to go into more detail than this, Peter is asking Jesus about His will for the apostle John, and Jesus says, "Jesus *said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!" In verse 22. I said to myself today that I have asked all kinds of questions about prayer, doubtful questions at times and curious questions at other times. Of all the questions one might have about prayer, our Master and Savior say, "What is that to you?" You follow Me," and that means pray. Thank you for listening, brethren, let us obey. Brethren, let's pray for one another. We were not able to locate the actor who normally plays Tom so in this episode he has been replaced by the combined forces of Lydia Smith and Heath Enright. The 4 of us discuss an article about a free-range parenting experiment. Note: I (Thomas) made a blunder in the recording of this podcast and had to use backup audio which combines Lydia and I. As a result, the quality is a little sub-optimal to a degree that may even be noticeable to normal human people. I could apologize, but no one is more upset about it than me, so does that really make sense? I think I'll apologize to myself and then not accept my own apology. Parents are more scared than ever. The media warn of “Stranger Danger.” Lenore Skenazy says this is foolish. Parents should let their kids be MORE independent. She calls it “Free Range” parenting. She says kids are healthier when given unsupervised freedom. Parents are happier too. But what about the kidnappings? Skenazy points out those are extremely rare. It's MUCH safer for kids to walk outside than ride in a car, yet parents rarely worry about driving. Today in America, some parents have even be arrested for letting their kids walk outside alone. We asked her about that and much more, in our full interview.
On this episode of Free Range, host Mike Livermore is joined by Natalie Jacewicz, a professor at the University of San Diego School of Law. Livermore and Jacewicz discuss here forthcoming paper, "Crafting a New Conservationism." In that paper, Jacewicz examines a fundamental tension in environmental law: the conflict between protecting ecological collectives like species and ecosystems, and safeguarding individual animals. Through analysis of over one hundred National Environmental Policy Act documents, she reveals how federal agencies navigate competing mandates when implementing wildlife management programs. The discussion explores how marquee conservation statutes, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, contain dual commitments to both collective and individual animal protection, yet provide little guidance for resolving conflicts between these goals. Jacewicz identifies systematic inconsistencies in how agencies approach these tensions, ranging from complete disregard for individual animals to positive duties of care. The conversation concludes by examining potential frameworks for incorporating animal welfare concerns into conservation policy more systematically.
What Star Trek's Wrath of Khan taught us about educated idiots and system thinking, and, I'll provide a one step easy question people can ask to avoid systems thinking. Did you know that free range parenting is not always legal? It's actually not. There's states where free range parenting is expressly illegal. Also, is writing “Christ is King” on social media anti-Semitic? Can it also be anti-Christian?Episode Links:Wrath of Khan and 2-D ThinkingUtah's "free-range parenting" law gives more freedom to parents and kidsApple's Pro-Family AdExplained: Why is everyone up in arms about “Christ is King”?Here's what the Catholic Church actually teaches about ‘Christ is King'; In 1900 Pope Leo XIII said, 'The world has heard enough of the ‘rights of man.' Let it hear of the rights of God.'
