According to the LA Times book critic Bethanne Patrick, every generation gets the Gatsby it deserves. And our generation, the social media generation, has gotten it with Careless People, by the Sarah Wynne Williams, Facebook's former global policy director, which draws obvious parallels between Facebook and The Great Gatsby. Williams explicitly compares Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg to Fitzgerald's lazily destructive Tom and Daisy Buchanan. She describes how the company prioritized business growth over ethical concerns, focusing on particularly disgraceful incidents in Myanmar and Brazil. And she reveals Sandberg's extravagant lifestyle ($13,000 on lingerie) and Zuckerberg's awkward interactions with world leaders. Patrick suggests the now best-selling book serves as a cautionary tale about powerful tech companies that "will do whatever it takes to get what they want."Bethanne Patrick maintains a storied place in the publishing industry as a critic and as @TheBookMaven on Twitter, where she created the popular #FridayReads and regularly comments on books and literary ideas to over 200,000 followers. Her work appears frequently in the Los Angeles Times as well as in The Washington Post, NPR Books, and Literary Hub. She sits on the board of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation and has served on the board of the National Book Critics Circle. She is the host of the Missing Pages podcast. This is a public episode. There are many reasons why use of medical products during pregnancy requires special attention. First and foremost, we want to be sure that the medicine is as safe as possible for both the pregnant person and the unborn child. Unfortunately, the safety profiles of medicines used in pregnancy are often incomplete, which makes it difficult for patients and healthcare professionals to make informed decisions. The Research section at Uppsala Monitoring Centre has a team that is currently focussing their efforts on pregnancy-related pharmacovigilance (PV). In this episode, Data scientists Sara Vidlin and Levente Papai, and Senior Pharmacovigilance scientist Lovisa Sandberg from this team, discuss complexities and challenges of pregnancy-related PV, and new solutions for addressing those challenges. Tune in to find outWhy is the world still behind when it comes to pregnancy-related pharmacovigilance? What are the challenges faced by pharmacovigilance assessors wanting to look at pregnancy cases? How can healthcare professionals, patients and carers help assessors overcome these challenges, when reporting pregnancy-related adverse drug events? How can the VigiBase pregnancy algorithm, and other algorithms, support the identification of pregnancy cases? How to use the VigiBase pregnancy algorithmUsers of VigiLyze and VigiBase Custom Searches can use the VigiBase pregnancy algorithm as a filter when performing searches. In the qualitative view in VigiLyze, click on “Filter” -> “Patient” -> “Pregnancy” to apply the filter.Want to know more?Read about the VigiBase pregnancy algorithm in this Uppsala Reports article and in this poster, presented at the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) 2024 annual meeting. EURAP – an international prospective observational study of pregnancies with antiepileptic drugs. As a senior research fellow at Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute until its closing in 2024 Sandberg explores everything from cognitive enhancement and artificial intelligence to existential risks and space colonization. With a background in computational neuroscience, he bridges science and philosophy to tackle some of the most profound questions of our time: How can we expand our cognitive capacities? What are the ethical implications of radical life extension? Could we one day transcend biological limitations entirely? Known for his sharp intellect, playful curiosity, and fearless speculation, Sandberg challenges conventional wisdom, inviting us to imagine—and shape—a future where humanity thrives beyond its current constraints.00:00 introduction04:18 exersise & David Sinclair06:10 Will we survive the century?18:18 Who can we trust? What do academics have to offer that practitioners do not already have? They have the data academics want. They can analyse it by themselves, sometimes better than academics. They are also not reading our articles. So why would academics bother engaging with them? Why should we even bridge that perceived or existing gap between theory and practice? Because academics need to dip their toes into practice, and they need to mingle with industry to stay relevant. So says Jonny Holmström, director and co-founder of the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation. He has been at the forefront of doing academic research that blends theory and practice, rigor and relevance, and he knows a thing or two about how to do so successfully. His secret? Maximize the gap between academics and practitioners, don't close it. References Holmström, J., Magnusson, J., & Mähring, M. (2021). Mia and Rob Sandberg, Proprietors of Root Floral and Lucia

Our guests today are Mia and Rob Sandberg, husband and wife, and a dynamic duo of entrepreneurship! Mia is the proprietor of Root Floral on Jefferson Street in Downtown Lafayette, 810 Jefferson Street. The shop is open Tuesday – Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. unless an event taking place.. Her company specializes in providing floral arrangements for events, weddings, and everyday flowers.  They offer a subscription service where you can sign up to give periodical gifts of flowers to that special someone. Open for walk-in arrangements, Root Floral's stock varies from day to day, so Mia advises people to order online or call ahead if they can. Big events like weddings can affect the in-store supply so it's best to place an order well in advance. Rob is the proprietor of Lucia, a bakery that offers not only delicious pastries but baked goods that offer a feast for the eyes! One look at their website will have you running to Lucia, located at 607 Kaliste Saloom Road. Lucia started out as a small batch, from-scratch bakery that began doing popups in our downtown area in late 2020, selling brioche-stuffed donuts (bombolonis) and then slowly began adding laminated pastries to the rotational menu. Lucia now concentrates on viennoise-style baking, a form of pastry made famous in France with origins in Vienna. Mia proudly shares the expansion of her online event collections, which now includes 21 color palettes to choose from. This is a great option for a bride who just needs basic items or those who don't want to go through the whole process of meeting. These collections can be used for bridal showers, baby showers, Christmas parties, or any special occasion. It's also a great way for clients on a budget to order flower arrangements. For clients worried about costs, Mia says that Root Floral will work with clients on a budget to help them achieve a beautiful arrangement for their special day. She explains that for pricing, they “price everything out by the stem” and “use a system called curate”. This is helpful for adjusting the number and types of flowers based on a client's budget. Mia graduated from the UL-Lafayette with a degree in interior design in 2008. She is passionate about color, texture and proportions, which she says helps her now in making her floral arrangements. After graduating, she took various jobs in product design and interior design in Dallas, Texas. She also was a waitress as Toulouse, the same restaurant Rob worked as a pastry chef. When the couple moved back to Lafayette in 2012, Rob was the one who suggested she open a flower shop. So, she began creating and sharing her creations inside of a small portable storage building at her parent's house in Cecilia. For a year she says she was “sending arrangements to as many businesses as I could”, like Carpe Diem or Kiki, to promote her work. She attributes good photography, Facebook, and her unique arrangements for her success. In the beginning she says, “there was lots of spray paint”. Within a year, she outgrew that location and moved to downtown Lafayette. Now she continues to provide beautiful flowers for events across Lafayette. It is an understatement to say that her company began to flourish; Root Floral has even been written up in Martha Stewart Living! Lucía, a boulangerie and viennoiserie located at 607 Kaliste Saloom Road near St. Pius was opened by Rob Sandberg in 2021. He began in the bakery business by doing popups and later selling pastries at the Moncus Park farmer's market where his brother Ruben Sandberg came on board. Lucía sold out each Saturday for about 2 years before Lucia opened on Kaliste Saloom. Rob says in the early days, he and Mia converted their sunroom into a bakery where their were frying donuts and making custards. Pastries and floral bouquets showcased at Lucia Mother's Day weekend 2024. A wonderful partnership between Mia and Rob Sandberg. ...

Episode 90: Welcome to episode 90 of the podcast! In this episode, I dive into what the Cubs need to do to turn their 83-win season into a playoff-contending 90-win team. I explore the concept of 90 wins as a target—something Craig Counsell and Jameson Taillon have both referenced—and how it almost always gets teams into the playoffs. I also reflect on what went right and wrong with the Cubs last season, Jed Hoyer's comments, and how they need to be more aggressive this offseason. Key topics include: Why aiming for 90 wins is crucial for the Cubs' future. The importance of exceeding expectations and how it played out in Cubs' history, from Sandberg's MVP season in '84 to Kerry Wood's breakout in '98. Why the Cubs need to be more aggressive in adding talent—be it through trades, free agency, or even internal development. Evaluating Jed Hoyer's cautious approach and whether it's time for a shift in strategy. Potential offseason moves, including big names like Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, and how the Cubs can still improve their roster depth. It's time for the Cubs to aim higher, raise the bar, and make bold moves to build a championship contender. Enjoy the episode, and let's get ready for an exciting offseason ahead! For Platform Distribution: Today on the program, we're proud to present the story behind the most widely recorded murder ballad in American history, the true St. Louis story of "Frankie and Johnny." Johnny's real name was Albert, and though the phrase "He was doin' her wrong” has been the constant refrain, the depiction of Frankie Baker has always been one of a vengeful murderess - rather than murder in self defense - and she fought nearly her entire life to change that narrative. For over 100 years, the song has continued to be recorded with many false depictions, and in this story, you'll hear how it all unfolded and became such a hallmark murder ballad in American music history. __ Support Educational Programming: Tax-Exempt Donations Join the Patreon Community One-time donations: Venmo or PayPal Follow American Songcatcher on Instagram  Credits: Ryan Eastridge - Research, Writing  Teddy Chipouras - Editing Nicholas Edward Williams - Production, research, editing, recording and distribution References: “A Brief History of St. Louis.” City of St. Louis.  Cellania, Miss. “The Story Behind ‘Frankie and Johnny.'” Mental Floss. Meet the Women Behind the WOW Committee This episode features insights from six trailblazing women who are not only leaders in their respective fields but also passionate advocates for the WOW mission: Stephanie Choury, Enterprise Account Manager at Buckman Digital Water Tammy Faber Sales Director of HOH Water Technology and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Paule Genest, Director of Sales and ESG, Water and Energy at TGWT Clean Technologies, Host of the Paule-Cast and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Michelle Lunn, Marketing Director of GLA Water Consultants & Director on the AWT Board Janice Shawl, President of AMSA, Inc. a specialty chemical manufacturing company Pam Simmons, National OEM Sales Manager, Watson Marlow What is Women of Water? WOW exists to welcome, highlight, and celebrate the contributions of women in AWT. Paule Genest articulates the mission clearly: “To encourage all the women working and thriving within the industry of water technologies to come forward and contribute their time and talents to the greater good.” WOW focuses on creating a thriving community where women can belong, elevate, and positively impact AWT. Mission of the WOW Committee The mission of the WOW Committee is clear: to promote the professional development and advancement of women in the water treatment industry. By providing education, networking opportunities, and a strong support system, the committee aims to foster a diverse and inclusive environment where all members can succeed. This mission not only benefits women but also strengthens the industry as a whole by encouraging fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Facing Challenges Head-On In every industry, women encounter unique challenges, and the water treatment sector is no exception. Pam Simmons, a dedicated member of the Women of Water (WOW) committee, sheds light on the obstacles women face and how the committee is striving to address them. Pam begins by acknowledging a reality that many women are all too familiar with the gender pay gap. According to the International Labor Organization, women globally earn about 20% less than men. This disparity is not just a number; it's a barrier that women must navigate throughout their careers. But the pay gap is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. There is also the issue of unequal opportunities, particularly in leadership. A 2022 report from Deloitte on women in the boardroom highlights that only 19% of boardroom positions are held by women. This underrepresentation speaks volumes about the challenges women face in advancing to leadership roles. For many women, the journey to the top is not just about breaking the glass ceiling; it's about finding the ladder to reach it in the first place. Career gaps present another significant hurdle. Whether its time taken off to have a baby or care for a family member, these interruptions can create substantial obstacles when women return to the workforce. Pam points out that these gaps can make it difficult for women to regain their footing and continue progressing in their careers. The struggle doesn't stop there. Navigating work-life balance is another challenge that resonates with everyone, regardless of gender, but it affects women in distinct ways. Pam reflects on how this delicate balance—or lack thereof—can leave a lasting impact on both personal and professional lives.  The WOW committee is not just identifying these challenges—they are actively working to address them. Pam shares that WOW is committed to introducing resources and strategies to help women cope with these challenges. Through support, education, and community, WOW aims to empower women in the water treatment industry to not just survive but thrive. How is WOW Helping Women in the Water Industry? The WOW Committee is already making a significant impact. There are now three women on AWT's Board of Directors, the most ever in the organization's history. Stephanie Choury has seen firsthand how the inclusion of women has led to greater collaboration and innovation within the industry. She notes that the women on the Board feel they have a “seat at the table” and are making meaningful contributions alongside their male colleagues. WOW is also instrumental in providing mentorship and creating spaces for women to grow their knowledge, skills, and leadership roles. The Power of Mentorship Mentorship is central to the Women of Water (WOW) committee's mission, acting as a crucial tool for professional growth and community building. As the industry evolves, mentorship plays a key role in creating pathways for women in water treatment. Tammy Faber emphasizes the importance of mentorship, referencing Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg.  Sandberg highlights that a mentor or sponsor can significantly boost career progression, yet women often lack such support. WOW addresses this gap by connecting seasoned professionals with newcomers. Tammy explains, “It's not just about an older professional helping a younger one; it's about leaning in and helping one another grow.” WOW has prioritized mentorship this year, especially with young professionals. Both mentors and mentees experience mutual growth, as Tammy shares: “The mentor-mentee relationship is so important because I can walk in a room and already know five people that maybe I only saw at technical training in March, but yet we've connected through text and email along the way. It feels like family and a safe place.” This focus on mentorship fosters a sense of belonging and a supportive network. Tammy notes, “We're a group that wants one another to succeed, and that's the power of mentor and mentee relationships.” These connections offer members a trusted group for advice and support, reinforcing that within WOW, no one stands alone. Empowering Connections: Key Takeaways from WOW's Leadership As we wrap up this insightful episode with the Women of Water (WOW) committee, our guests share powerful messages about empowerment, mentorship, and community. Michelle Lunn's closing thoughts are a beacon of encouragement: whether you're new to the industry or a seasoned professional, reaching out and connecting is crucial. Her message is clear—every woman in the industry belongs and has the potential to achieve great things. So, at the next convention or industry event, don't hesitate to introduce yourself and make connections. You have the power to excel and belong. Pam Simmons adds a call for self-awareness and openness to addressing subconscious biases in our interactions. She encourages all professionals to be mindful of how these biases might influence relationships and conversations. This self-reflection is essential for fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment. Tammy Faber challenges seasoned professionals to reach out to those who may seem hesitant or reserved. By engaging with someone who might be standing on the sidelines, you can make a significant impact. Invite them for a coffee, introduce yourself, and help them feel welcome. This simple act of kindness can make a world of difference to someone new in the room. Janice Shawl reminds us that women are a vibrant and integral part of the water treatment industry. Her message celebrates the contributions of women and underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing their presence in the field. Stephanie Choury underscores the immense value of mentorship. Whether at an industry event or in everyday interactions, extending a helping hand to others can be incredibly rewarding. She emphasizes that mentorship is a two-way street and encourages everyone to be both mentors and mentees. By fostering these relationships, we can all contribute to a supportive and thriving professional community. Paule Genest reinforces the core message of WOW: we belong, we elevate, and we are WOW. She urges everyone to help others recognize their worth and potential, creating a positive impact both within and beyond the industry. As we look at the current statistics—only 10% of surveyed AWT members are women, and a similar percentage represents women in industrial water treatment nationally—there is a clear need for continued effort. In 2024, 40% of our Scaling UP! H2O podcast guests have been women, reflecting progress and the importance of representation. Our challenge to you, Scaling UP! August 28, 1990, Ryne Sandberg of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first second baseman in history to notch consecutive 30-home run seasons. Sandberg hits his milestone 30th home run against the Houston Astros, helping the Cubs to a 5-2 win. Sandberg went onto hit 40 homeruns, he is 1 of 9 men to hit 40 homeruns in a season and the cubs ar the only team to have 40+ homerun hitters at shortstop and secondbase. August 28, 1967, the Boston Red Sox sign free agent first baseman/outfielder Ken “Hawk” Harrelson, who had been fired by the Kansas City A's for making critical remarks about owner Charlie Finley. Harrelson reportedly receives a $75,000 bonus and salary package for 1967 and 1968. Harrelson will homer in his first Boston at bat but will hit just .200 for the Red Sox in 1967, he did hit 3 homeruns and drive in 14 however. The next year, however, he will become an All-Star and lead the American League with 109 RBI. Harrelson has become a colorful out spoken announcer since his retirment for baseball. 1951 - The Braves sell pitcher Johnny Sain to the Yankees for $50,000 and a young pitcher named Lew Burdette. It is another late-season insurance measure for the New Yorkers. Burdette would later be the key pitcher when the Braves beat the Yankees in the 1957 World Series. He won games 2,5 and 7 including back to back shutouts in game 5 and 7. Sain did pitch for 3 championship teams for New York but only pitched 13.2 innings over those years and went 1-1 in the World Series. Burdette pitched more innings and won more games in 1957 series alone.

Then after 1881 when the Tsar was assassinated, the Jews were unfairly blamed and there were many violent pogroms. Thousands fled to America and Western Europe to escape. For many English Jews this is their family's story. Their ancestors mainly went to the East End of London. But several thousand settled in northern cities such as Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. The Jewish garment industry of the north went on to change the landscape of the British high street. Brands like Marks and Spencer (set up in Leeds Market), Burtons and Moss Brothers were part of the warp and the weft of twentieth century retailing.

“I want to pursue the industry. I don't know what it looks like. I don't have connections. But I knew I was interested in development,” thought Ashley Jay Sandberg while pursuing journalism. “I tell people to follow what you're curious about because you don't know where that's going to lead.” Ashley's latest film is Twisters, a re-imaginging of the original film, where a retired tornado chaser and meteorologist (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is persuaded to return to Oklahoma to work with a new team (Glen Powell) and new technologies. Twisters was also written by Mark L. Smith who was on the show back in Episode 512. In this interview, Ashley talks about working with Frank Marshall (Gremlins, The Goonies), the difference in docs versus fiction work from a studio perspective, making a movie based on “science theory,” pitching to Steven Spielberg, and unproduced scripts she still thinks about. As a special note, this was part of our new LIVE interview series in partnership with Buzztown, a community for serious screenwriters, where students also participated in this interview.
