During radio's classic age, few women had starring roles on dramatic programs outside of soap operas. One such woman was Mercedes McCambridge, who Orson Welles called the world's greatest living radio actress. She starred in the early 1950s crime show Defense Attorney, also known at The Defense Rests. McCambridge was so convincing that she receiving an honorary membership in the Los Angeles Women's Bar Association. McCambridge began her career as a radio actor during the 1930s while also performing on Broadway. She went on to appear in movies and numerous TV shows, winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her screen debut in All the King's Men in 1949. You will hear Defense Attorney from 1951, and The Defense Rests from 1952 with Mercedes McCambridge in the title character of Martha Ellis Bryant, a respected attorney who champions the underdog and the unjustly accused. Celebrate the birthday of actress Mercedes McCambridge with an hour of Defense Attorney.  The Oscar winner stars as crusading lawyer Martha Ellis Bryant, a legal eagle cut from the same cloth as Perry Mason, in "The Case of Joseph Moriano," the series' audition episode from April 1951; and "Client Jimmy Leonard," originally aired on ABC on September 14, 1951.

Our star this week was called "the world's greatest living radio actress" by Orson Welles.  She's Academy Award winner Mercedes McCambridge, and we'll hear her as Martha Ellis Bryant on Defense Attorney.  On the podcast this week, we'll hear her fight to clear her wrongfully accused clients in "Client Joshua Masters," first broadcast on ABC on April 10, 1952.

DEFENSE ATTORNEY - Playing radio's last lady crime fighter was a prominent actress, Mercedes McCambridge. The series began on NBC under the title "The Defense Rests" in the spring of 1951. NBC soon dropped it so ABC picked it up, kept the same cast, re-titled it :"Defense Attorney" and aired it from August 1951 to December 1952. McCambridge, portraying an attorney named Martha Ellis Bryant, spent virtually no time in the courtroom and instead was in the streets, solving crimes and mysteries. She was assisted by her boy friend, Jud Barnes, a reporter, played by Howard Culver (whose "Straight Arrow" series had just gone off the air.) Six episodes of the ABC series and one of the NBC version have survived and all attest to the excellent writing, good acting, and fast pace of a well-done adventure show. When Attorney Bryant solved her last case on 12-30-52, it brought down the curtain on OTR's lady crime fighters.
