Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this, our 204th episodes, our guest is Jessica Ordaz. Jessica Ordaz is an Assistant Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. She received her doctorate from the University of California Davis in American History. During the 2017-2018 academic year, Ordaz was the Andrew W. Mellon Sawyer Seminar postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington, which focused on comparative racial capitalism. Her first book, "The Shadow of El Centro: A History of Migrant Incarceration and Solidarity," was released in March 2021. Her second project will explore the multifaceted history of veganism and plant based foods throughout the Americas, focusing on colonization, food politics, and social justice. This research will illuminate the wider and transnational history of Latinx veganism and how communities of color have engaged with questions of animal, human, and plant relations for centuries. A quick programming note: Her essay, which we discuss during the first part of this episode, is titled “The Detention and Deportation Regime as a Conduit of Death: Memorializing and Mourning Migrant Loss” and is included in the book “A Field Guide to White Supremacy” edited by Kathleen Belew and Ramón A. Gutiérrez, which will be published Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021 by the University of California Press. Join The Rob Burgess Show mailing list! The Shadow starring William Johnstone, originally broadcast October 19, 1941, The Hoodoo Ship. The crew of a ship filled with slaves murders the Africans aboard "The Raven" in 1850. In "modern" times, "The Raven" seems to be jinxed, in a plot stolen shamelessly from "Treasure Island." When two murders take place on board "The Raven," keep your eye on the bo's'on with the wooden leg! Also Bob and Ray, originally broadcast October 19, 1959, Sports Time. Biff Burns reports "The Weekly Fights." A visit from John W. Wilcox, a actor on soap operas. An expose of long business lunches.

Lubomir's film, In Shadow here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j800SVeiS5I Watch it before listening to get the most from this talk and to witness what is a real masterpiece of mythic, artistic storytelling. Lubo is a illustrator and animator, as well as a director of films. His In Shadow has been viewed nearly 5 million times on Youtube, and for good reason. It is a relentless cultural observation into the darkness of our world, but it is also an incredibly powerful and encouraging reminder for the unity, ascension and evolution that is both happening and possible in humanity. I recommend watching it a few times, it is powerful and poetic and I got more from it each time I watched. PERSONAL UPDATE: Hey guys, we are sad to announce, the Belief Hole is currently one brother down. Chris has been hit with some back-related issues, and after a brief stint in the ER, he is out of commission. He's home now, and eager to get back to work, but that may take some time. We just wanted to let you amazing listeners know what's going on in case of delays with episode drops or what have you. We'll have to see how things progress with him to know how much it will affect our upcoming schedule, but we'll keep everyone posted with updates over at expansion.beliefhole.com. As always, thank you all so much for the support and understanding. Without further ado, onto the show... Since Thomas Edison recorded the first audible human words on tin foil, mankind has been documenting its every experience on the earth. But a small number of dedicated recordists have been listening... in between the sound; In the hum and hiss of the white noise. Listening for voices that may not want to be heard. Who belongs to these voices? What are they trying to tell us? Can we trust what they're saying? On this episode of Belief Hole, we search the sonic darkness to bring you voices from beyond the veil. So, sit back and dust off your tape recorder, as we discuss the secretive speakers and cryptic communications from the other side. Why do Southeast Asia specialists get tired of explaining that the politics of the region cannot be reduced to a zero-sum game of Chinese-US great power rivalries? How do relatively small Southeast Asian states negotiate their relations with these major powers in an increasingly antagonistic environment? And why has the idea of the Indo-Pacific become so popular in recent years, and where does that leave the region most of us still call ‘Asia'? Prominent Singaporean political scientist Joseph Liow Chin Yong discusses these and other questions in conversation with NIAS Director Duncan McCargo. Joseph Liow Chin Yong, is the Tan Kah Kee Chair in Comparative and International Politics at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, where he also serves as Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Joseph is well-known for his work on the politics and international relations of Southeast Asia. He is the author of several books, the most recent of which are Ambivalent Engagement: The United States and Regional Security in Southeast Asia after the Cold War (Brookings 2017) and Religion and Nationalism in Southeast Asia (Cambridge University Press 2016). The Nordic Asia Podcast is a collaboration sharing expertise on Asia across the Nordic region, brought to you by the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) based at the University of Copenhagen, along with our academic partners: the Centre for East Asian Studies at the University of Turku, Asianettverket at the University of Oslo, and the Stockholm Centre for Global Asia at Stockholm University.
