New research indicates that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding beyond established guidelines, with significant implications for IT leadership and security. A study from UpGuard reveals that over 80% of employees in sectors like finance and healthcare are utilizing unauthorized AI tools, often referred to as shadow AI. This trend raises security concerns, as nearly half of these employees report regular use of these unapproved tools, with one in four trusting AI more than their colleagues. The findings suggest that while AI is becoming integral to business operations, the lack of clear ownership and governance poses risks for organizations.The evolving role of IT leaders is highlighted by a report from Atera, which shows that 63% of IT leaders are experiencing changes in their responsibilities due to AI advancements. Notably, 49% of respondents emphasize the importance of guiding business value leadership, while 47% recognize the need for orchestrating human-AI collaboration. Despite these shifts, only 12% of IT leaders report that AI ownership is clearly defined within their organizations, indicating a gap in governance that could exacerbate the risks associated with shadow AI.In addition to these developments, the episode discusses the financial landscape for managed service providers (MSPs) as outlined in a report from TopDown Ventures. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Liz Sjaastad, author of the book You're Too Young to Understand. Believing that memoir offers both a pathway to understanding those different from us and to finding community, Liz shares her personal stories in writing and in speaking.   During her first act as an adult she balanced her way through a career in organization development, volunteering for mental health organizations, and having three babies. Her second act has been writing a book and raising teenagers with her husband. Her third act is still in its first draft.   You can find Liz in St. Paul, Minnesota, on a tennis court, pickleball court, or walking her dogs with her hubby. If not, she'll be in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area paddling and hiking about.   In my book review, I stated You're Too Young to Understand is a memoir by Liz Fiedorow Sjaastad. Her story outlines life with a schizophrenic mother and an alcoholic father from childhood and through the later years of her parents' lives. Because of her open nature, Liz gives readers a glimpse into a world of dysfunction and what it is like to live with those who suffer from mental illness and addiction.   What I loved most was that her stories, though often covering difficult topics, were funny, touching, and very real. Even with all that was going on, there was love, tenderness, happy times, and family togetherness. What could have been an indictment against her parents reads more like a story about family, what it means, and how to care for it even in the face of terrible odds.   I walked away understanding how difficult it can be to get someone the help they need, and how taboo mental illness and addiction still are in our society. He is the founding director of Kohelet, a conservative-libertarian think tank in Israel, and he advises members of the Knesset on legislative matters. Dr. Malka Simkovich is the director and editor-in-chief of the Jewish Publication Society and previously served as the Crown-Ryan Chair of Jewish Studies and Director of the Catholic-Jewish Studies program at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. She earned a doctoral degree in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism from Brandeis University and a Master's degree in Hebrew Bible from Harvard University. Tikvah Wiener is Founder and Co-Director of The Idea Institute, which, since 2014, has trained close to 2000  educators in project-based learning and innovative pedagogies. In the early hours of Thursday, February 21st, 2008, a six-year-old girl woke to a creaking noise down the hallway outside her bedroom door. It was a blustery night in rural Nevada, so she figured it was just the wind bending frozen tree branches in the yard. But then another creaking noise filled the house, this time even closer to her bedroom. She pulled her covers tight around her and stared out through the crack in the door. An uneasy feeling settled over her as the light in the hallway shifted. She could almost see the outline of a person standing outside her room. She squinted, trying to make out a face, wondering if it was one of her parents checking in on her.
