Are you on the vertical-video bandwagon? Or perhaps you’ll be more persuaded by another phenomenon, the C-drama, once you’ve heard @tritney’s take on the Chinese romance boom that has finally hit America. (Of course, she brings her starter-pack picks for anyone who wants to see some of the best eye-acting in action.) Then: Sanjana assigns Tyler Sherry Thomas's Private Arrangements, and Tyler becomes a full historical-romance advocate, one devastating "you breathe, and I'll know it's you" line at a time. The ReelShort phenomenon and Nick Skonberg, vertical-vid star. Plus: Publishers Weekly on Harlequin microdramas. @tritney’s C-drama romance starter recommendations, all on Netflix: Pursuit of Jade, Love in the Clouds, Hidden Love, The First Frost, and the BL (boys’ love) classic The Untamed. Tyler's homework assignment: Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 1977, NPR was on the brink of losing its audience and its funding. Then came an unlikely lifeline: Star Wars. In this episode of Father Son Galaxy, we sit down with Maria Jose Tenuto and John Tenuto, authors of The Star Wars Radio Dramas: Brian Daley and the Serialization That Saved NPR, to unpack how a scrappy radio adaptation, turned a galaxy far, far away into a ratings phenomenon and helped rescue public radio in America. We dig into the USC connection that started it all, George Lucas's surprisingly modest asking price, standout performances from the new cast (including Brock Peters), and the emotional, 13-year road to Return of the Jedi's radio premiere.

Eric is back, and this time the guys are not discussing Japanese films! Instead, they decided to explore a pair of films directed by Alan Rudolph, a filmmaker mentored by Robert Altman and who directed some fascinatinhly odd films over his long career. Eric and Jason decided to take a look at two Rudolph films which explore interesting historical figures: Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle and The Moderns. Though these films are similar, they take different paths to their ultimate conclusions and have overlapping but different feels to them. Rudolph was kind of a blind spot for Jason; does he earn a spot in Jason's pantheon next to Altman or does the work fall short of genius?

In the latest Electoral Road Show with Chris Steyn, Elections Analyst Wayne Sussman describes how Gayton MacKenzie's Patriotic Alliance (PA) is continuing to march onwards and upwards “weakening” both the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape. In the latest by-election, the PA won 53% of the vote in Malmesbury Wesbank. “This used to be the safest DA municipality in the country. And in 2024, the Patriotic Alliance burst through that wall by winning the seat off the DA.” Sussman also comments on GOOD and Rise Mzansi joining forces behind mayoral hopeful Brett Herron; the ANC's elevation of Dada Morero to intervention convener for Gauteng's troubled municipalities; the late President Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla eyeing a mayoral chain in the Eastern Cape; and Buffalo City Mayor Princess Faku coming under fire for taking officials on overseas trips to China and Germany while the municipality is struggling financially. “Next week we have two Buffalo City by-elections…It'll be interesting to see whether this issue, this debacle, hurts the ANC because both of the seats are ANC seats.”

Ian Von sits down with triple–threat talent Keith D. Robinson for a rich conversation that moves between two worlds: R&B and acting. Keith opens up about growing up in 90s R&B culture, getting his start in harmony groups, landing a short–lived Motown deal, and how a leap of faith to Los Angeles led to major film and TV roles. He breaks down the parallels between his own journey and his breakout role as CC in Dreamgirls, revisits performing “Patience” on the Oscars stage alongside Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson, and talks about what it meant to realize he actually belonged in rooms with icons like Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. On the music side, Keith dives into his new single “Different Languages” and the forthcoming album Love Episodic 2: The Algorithm—a deeply personal project shaped by COVID, the Hollywood strike, fatherhood, and divorce. He explains how songwriting forces him to become more self–aware and empathetic, and why relationships are really defined in the bad times, not the good ones. They also unpack his role as Dr. Ted Richardson on CBS's Beyond the Gates, why affluent Black family stories matter in this moment, what it's like juggling live performance with on–camera work, and they close with a fun R&B head–to–head: Tank vs. Tyrese in Verzuz.
My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/ For years, Hollywood writer Aaron Tracy built his career inside the traditional television system, writing for shows like Law & Order and navigating the endless cycle of pilots, canceled series, and development purgatory that defines much of the TV business. But over the last several years, Tracy has quietly carved out a very different kind of entertainment career: producing serialized audio dramas for platforms like Audible and iHeart. Along the way, he's worked with everyone from Aaron Paul to Lizzy Caplan to Glenn Powell, helping pioneer a form of storytelling that sits somewhere between television, audiobooks, and podcasting. In a recent interview, Tracy explained why audio dramas offer writers far more creative freedom than television, how he packages and sells narrative shows to platforms like Audible and iHeart, and the surprisingly lean production process behind large-scale audio series.

Tora still doesn't have a microphone yet, so his audio quality may not be great at times — thank you for your understanding.Tora, who has recently been really into Netflix, introduced some of his recommended dramas. Since there was a period when he couldn't watch Netflix, these aren't necessarily the latest shows, but many of them were very popular a little while ago. We're not sure whether they're available in your country, but if they are, definitely check them out! Also, here is the URL for the website called Kaiwa that we mentioned in the episode. Our podcast episodes haven't been turned into scenarios on the site yet, but they should be available soon. We'll keep updating things gradually, so please stay tuned!

Geelong's impressive win over Brisbane has them back in Premiership contention, and Damo fires back at Kane Cornes over allegations he paid for his exclusive interview with Michael Voss.
