Welcome to part 20 of our epic series on Dr. John G. Turner's landmark biography, “Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet.”Things are really heating up as we enter the mid-1830s in the life of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter-day Saint movement. This episode dives into one of the most controversial and debated episodes in early Mormon history –Joseph's relationship with Fanny Alger, a young woman employed in the Smith household in Kirtland, Ohio in 1836.Was it adultery? Was it an early form of plural marriage? Or was it something else entirely –a “scrape”?Join us for Part 1 of Chapter 18, where we unpack Turner's detailed treatment of this scandal, explore how it fractured relationships within the early church (especially between Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery), and trace how it shaped the theology of polygamy that would later emerge in Nauvoo. Please purchase the book here.To support this series please donate here. One half of all donations will go to Dr. Turner for as long as he is participating in the series.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1. Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology2. Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis3. Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions
This week, we're recording on Driftglass's birthday while he's still battling a cold and sounding disturbingly like RFK Jr. meets Broderick Crawford—so we're keeping it simple and direct. Why should Democrats stop accommodating Republican sociopaths who inflict pain on their own base as leverage? And what happens when Democrats finally say "let them burn" instead of rushing to pay the ransom? Why are there focus groups with Trump voters but never with the Democratic base? Why is it always the Democrats' job to accommodate the ego, bigotry, stupidity, and paranoia of fragile white men? Why are on-air consultants auditioning for paydays by insisting Democrats move to the "reasonable center"? And what polls amazingly well that none of these hired guns want to talk about? (Hint: getting money out of politics.)Happy Birthday, Driftglass. Get well soon. (And Happy Halloween, everyone!) Send us a textCory Marks has been carving his own path through the music industry as he drinks Jack Daniel's on Whiskey River and apologizes for absolutely nothing (seriously: he's made two whole albums about it). But, I got the chance to sit down with him and see what's behind the guitar and the lyrics while keeping the industry at the forefront, and people might not be ready for what he has to say. Plus, New Belgium's "Oakspire" has been in my crosshairs recently and I gotta know...is there anything better? Maybe we need to explore this question further! Caroline Barrow was raised in a typical Mormon household in Louisiana. While she was a faithful believer in the Church, she always had questions about certain teachings but was often encouraged to halt her critical thinking on these issues. She chose to attend BYU and serve a Mormon mission, but continued to be plagued by questions—particularly around polygamy and the treatment of women in the LDS faith. Caroline also found herself struggling with scrupulosity, perfectionism, and the many pressures placed on women in the Church.Listen as she shares her story of how she confronted these questions and learned to trust herself and her instincts as an analytical woman within the Mormon faith.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.

How Many Illegal CDL's. There are - Approximately 100,000 truck drivers in the United States are illegal immigrants. - This estimate is based on the proportion of undocumented workers in the transportation and warehousing sector, which is higher than the national average. - It's surprising that truck driving, requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), has a significant number of undocumented workers, given legal barriers. ### Background Truck drivers are vital to the U.S. economy, with around 3.5 million professionals ensuring goods are transported across the country. The transportation and warehousing sector, where most truck drivers work, employs about 5.6 million people and has a higher proportion of undocumented workers compared to other industries, at around 6.4% in recent years. ### Estimation Process The estimate of 100,000 undocumented truck drivers comes from analyzing the sector's workforce and the distribution of undocumented workers. Given the legal requirements for a CDL, such as proof of legal residency, it's notable that this number is significant, suggesting some undocumented workers may find ways to navigate these requirements, possibly through state-specific driver's license policies or other loopholes. This week, we're examining the legacy media's desperate attempt to plug a 20-foot hole in their Both Sides narrative—and why their favorite solution won't work. The New York Times Editorial Board insists that "moving to the center is the way to win," but the data show that this strategy is already exhausted. Talking of compromise with an enemy who wants no reconciliation is absolutely ridiculous.Links for this episode:On Data And Democracy Substack: "The New York Times Argues 'Moving to the Center Is the Way to Win.'
