Is there a faithful way of deconstruction that has nothing to do with Jesus? Micah J. Murray joins us to discuss in an honest and transparent way his journey of deconstruction and reconstruction aside from a faith system. CONNECT: @micahjmurray
This week we are talking post theism and 'blasphemous hallelujahs' with Micah J. Murray of Existentialist Happy Hour. We unpack what Micah means by 'profane praise,' telling all sorts of stories along the way while also delving deep into moving on from the God that is idol and damaging illusion to an understanding of life that is sacrilegious against a certain type of god and certain types of sacred things. This is a conversation you don't want to miss! micahjmurray.com instagram: @micahjmurray
It seems the Evangelical church is waking up to the Deconstruction movement and their response has been what it always is: to control the narrative. In this episode, Megan talks about the importance of defining deconstruction and reconstruction, why Christian Apologists are problematic and how to spot them, and how to protect yourself from Christians who want to control deconstruction. The church does not get to define deconstruction, and they certainly don't get to tell us how to go about it. There are no rules to deconstruction that say you must end up a Christian again, and anyone who tells you otherwise has no authority anyway. Let this episode validate your journey and help you spot potential sources of spiritual manipulation and control. Murray Micah is your typical somewhat disillusioned-but-tenaciously-hopeful post-evangelical millennial. He grew up in a weird home school cult, did a brief stint as a missionary in Africa, went to Christian college, got married, had two kids, got divorced, and now goes to therapy a lot and writes angsty stuff on the internet. People tell him all the time that he shouldn’t be a Christian anymore after all the shit he’s experienced in the name of that religion, but by some combination of stubbornness, laziness, and the grace of God, he still claims that faith (most days). Micah lives in Minneapolis with his family, where he makes websites for artists and authors and entrepreneurs and waits (impatiently) for spring. micahjmurray.com micahjmurray.com Cody Burton Operations and Programming Support Born and raised in North Florida, Cody is a passionate advocate for social justice and full inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community within the Church. In the 70s and 80s, a prominent and influential name among Fundamental / Evangelical Christians was Bill Gothard, and his Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts seminars. Thousands of people would fill auditoriums to hear his "Biblical Principles of Life." Blogger and speaker, Micah J. Murray, recounts what it was like growing up under the teachings of Gothard, being homeschooled using Gothard's controversial curriculum, and working in Gothard's authoritarian organization. We also talk to him about the scandal that essential destroyed the organization. Micah is blunt about the dangers of Gothard's teachings, why he walked away, and his work in educating others. In this episode, I compile the highlights of some this season's best guests (part 1). You'll hear the best of my conversation with WP Young (The Shack), Carlos Rodriguez (Happy Sonship) and Micah J Murray as we explore different ways of imagining God, Christianity and our faith as a whole. We discuss thoughts on hell, inclusion, the history of American Christianity, how we've misunderstood God, "judgement" and what Jesus was really all about. I talk with blogger, writer and former evangelical ministry leader Micah J. Murray about his journey of leaving the Christian norm. Micah candidly shares his story of being raised inside a conservative Christian cult and the heresy he witnessed during his evangelical career. He shares his deep longing to know that God was good and equally the fear and loneliness he faced once he stepped outside the box. His story is honest, brave and covered in marks of Divine love. If you’re up for a candid, unfiltered conversation offering different ideas and perspectives (and don’t mind a bit of swearing) you’ll love this conversation.
