The boil water notice affecting thousands of households in Christchurch's east has been lifted for all but about 20 properties. About 14,000 households feared they'd face at least another day without being able to drink from the tap after the water supply in the city's east was found to be contaminated. A public health alert was issued on Saturday afternoon for people in New Brighton, Burwood, Wainoni, Aranui and Southshore after routine testing discovered total coliforms in the Rawhiti water zone. As Tess Brunton reports, the contaminated water has prompted calls for councils to change the way notify vulnerable and immunocompromised communities.
Thousands of properties are without power throughout Manawatu and Whanganui, as people were evacuated and schools closed for the day. Some have been restored but authorities are warning more wild weather could cause new issues. The power outages are also likely to affect cell towers across the regions, as well as water treatment plants so people in some areas are also being asked to conserve water. Manawatu-Whanganui group controller and Horizons Regional Council chief executive Michael McCartney spoke to Lisa Owen.

You know what they say about records? They’re made to be broken. Well, off the coast of the Virginian Province in China, a new machine is spinning China three. Gorges and Goldwin have connected the world’s first 20 megawatt offshore wind turbine to the electrical grid. 20 megawatts from a single turbine. It’s blade stretched 147 meters long. That’s nearly 500 feet. The rotor sweeps an area equal to about 10 football fields. The hub sits 174 meters above the waves, a 58 story building floating its sea. This one wind [00:01:00] turbine will power 44,000 homes. And here’s what makes it interesting. This is the same wind farm where the world’s first 16 megawatt turbine went in. That record lasted barely two years. Meanwhile, Chinese turbine exports hit a record, 8 million kilowatts in 2025, a 50% from the year before. Chinese companies now operate in more than 60 countries. Uh. Across the Atlantic, a different kind of milestone. Nova Scotia has quietly become Canada’s leader in corporate clean energy deals while Alberta fumbled through policy moratoriums, the maritime province signed agreements that drew renewable investment northward The $60 billion Wind West project aims to unlock 62 gigawatts of offshore capacity. That’s a quarter of Canada’s total energy needs. Premier, Tim Houston traveled to New York this past month for the [00:02:00] International Partnering Forum. He signed a deal with Massachusetts to collaborate on offshore wind development . Lisa Engler from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center put it simply worked together lower costs, build the Atlantic Wind Industry. Nova Scotia’s first offshore lease auction comes later this year. And in Scotland, great British energy, announced its permanent headquarters. Location. Marshall Square. In Aberdeen, CEO, Dan McGrail called Aberdeen the perfect home for Britain’s publicly owned energy company. Thousands of engineers and technicians already call the city home Energy Minister Michael Shanks noted that Aberdeen has powered Britain for decades. First with oil and gas. Now with clean energy and on the American Prairie, South Dakota, regulators approved the state’s largest wind farm. Philip Wind Partners, a subsidiary of Chicago based Invenergy will build [00:03:00] 87 turbines across 110 square miles of private land north of Phillip. The price tag $750 million. The capacity. 333 megawatts enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes and in laboratories across Europe. Researchers announced a breakthrough that could solve when energy’s most stubborn problem. What happens when turbine blades were out The Oleum project has produced the first bal salt fiber reinforced vier composite laminate through a new infusion technique in plain English. Its recyclable blades made from volcanic rock fiber. The goal blades that last 20% longer repair 40% faster and costs 15% less over the lifetime. So there you have it from China’s colossal machines to Nova Scotia’s Bold Ambitions from [00:04:00] Aberdeen’s new energy company to South Dakota’s Prairie Wind Farm from European laboratories working on the recycling puzzle. The state is clawing back more than $3-million dollars from a nearly $5 million grant it awarded Cleveland for a program that would help rid old houses of lead. The Ohio Department of Development administered the grant as part of the Lead Safe Ohio Program. It would pay up to $15,000 to remove old windows and doors, a major source of lead paint that chips and flakes and exposes occupants to lead poisoning. Lead can cause permanent neurological damage in children, and Cleveland has been working for years to remove lead from its older housing stock and the city's health director says there is actually promising news: Testing has shown for the second straight year a reduction in lead levels for kids. The story begins our discussion of the week's top news on the Friday “Sound of Ideas Reporters Roundtable.” Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne wants to take control of finances for the county sheriff's department as overtime costs there soar. The sheriff has said he'll sue if that happens. Cuyahoga County prosecutors argued before the Ohio Supreme Court on Feb.11 that a murder conviction is appropriate for the man who struck and killed Cleveland Johnny Tetrick as the firefighter was responding to an accident on I-90. Leander Bissell was convicted of murder, but an appeals court reduced it to involuntary manslaughter. Bissell struck Tetrick as he drove around stopped traffic at an accident scene. A federal judge yesterday denied the Trump administration's request to pause a ruling that allows Haitians in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status to maintain that status. Thousands of Haitians with such protection live in Springfield. The administration's appeal continues. The Trump administration announced yesterday it was ending its immigration surge in Minneapolis. Border czar Tom Homan called Operation Metro Surge a success. Two U.S. citizens were killed, and widespread protests gripped the city. Homan credited coordination with local law enforcement as a factor in the operation's success. Protests continue across the country, including locally, where Thursday students at Cleveland Heights High School staged a long-planned walk out to show solidarity with immigrant families impacted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Many of those participating have direct ties to immigrant communities and want schools to be safe spaces. This week, Akron became the latest city to oppose proposed bills in the Ohio legislature that would require local police to help with federal immigration enforcement. The College of Wooster is cutting staff in response to shrinking enrollment. President Anne McCall announced that the school is laying off 22 non-faculty staff. It's almost time for public schools to submit their budget forecasts to the state for approval and the districts in Cleveland and Akron say they'll need to make significant cuts over the next several years, despite already going through consolidation and collecting more money from taxpayers with levies. More than half of the public school districts in Ohio, part of a coalition called Vouchers Hurt Ohio, are suing the state over how it funds schools, diverting money to vouchers for private schools. Lawmakers who approve of the vouchers say they allow families to have education choice. A new bill introduced in Columbus would allow the state to yank funding from districts that sue. In our area, anyone who is a biker heads off to the small town of Port Dover, Ontario. Thousands spend the day showing off their bikes, eating, and hanging out with people who have a shared interest in motorcycles. In the same small town is a wonderful ministry to young adults called the South Coast Beach Project, or SOCO for short. Young adults are welcomed into a home for the summer (May-August) where they share life together, grow in discipleship, and work and hang out in the community. A few years ago the young adults decided to set up a table on Friday the 13th when crowds of bikers came to town. They gave away freeze pops and made lots of connections. The SOCO director told me, "People couldn't believe we would give something away for free. It was fun to say, ‘We are just being neighborly.'” It was a moment of hospitality and generosity. It was an open door for conversation. I love how the SOCO group partnered with an event already happening in the community, and how they could share a “Jesus in the neighborhood” moment.
