The Department of Justice is in crisis. The bedrock principle of non-interference, once held sacrosanct by administrations of both parties, has been jettisoned. The Attorney General has directed the Department to represent the President and his agenda above all else. Thousands of attorneys and professionals have left or been forced out as leadership pursues personal and political grudges at the President's open direction. What reforms can be instituted to restore the department's independence? What can be done by Congress or outside organizations to bring oversight to the abuses taking place within the department? What can future administrations do to restore the Department's professionalism and reputation?Join the Progressive Legal Movement Today: ACSLaw.orgHost: Diane Furstenau, Director of Policy and Program, ACSGuest: Rachel Rossi, President, Alliance for Justice (and Panel Moderator)Guest: Rupa Bhattacharyya, Legal Director, Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection, Georgetown LawGuest: Stuart Delery, Partner, Gibson DunnGuest: Stacey Young, Founder & Executive Director, Justice ConnectionLink: Blanche won't pledge DOJ independence from Trump, by Andrew PantaziLink: How the Trump administration erased centuries of Justice Department experience, by Eric Tucker and Alanna Durkin RicherLink: How Trump is weaponizing the DoJ to ‘bully, prosecute, punish and silence' his foes, by Peter StoneVisit the Podcast Website: Broken Law PodcastEmail the Show: Podcast@ACSLaw.orgFollow ACS on Social Media: Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | LinkedIn | YouTube-----------------Broken Law: About the law, who it serves, and who it doesn't.-----------------Production House: Flint Stone MediaCopyright of American Constitution Society 2026.
The Fall of Baghdad In this solo episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we continue our exploration of Eugene Rogan's masterful The Fall of the Ottomans, examining the British campaign to capture Baghdad in 1917 – a victory that helped redeem the catastrophic humiliation of Kut.The surrender at Kut in April 1916 had been one of the worst disasters in British military history. Thousands of British and Indian soldiers, starved into submission, were marched into captivity and then worked to death building Ottoman railways. The British government was deeply wary of any further advances in Mesopotamia. But the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, smarting from the stigma of defeat, was determined to score a victory.Drawing on Rogan's narrative, we trace the campaign from the cautious advance on the Tigris to the fall of Baghdad. General Maud, a commander who had been wounded in France and was the last man off the beach at Gallipoli, was determined to break the Ottoman defences. Despite orders from London that barred an advance on the city, Maud pushed forward – driven in part by a superstitious belief that 13 was his lucky number. The Ottoman Sixth Army, worn down by illness, desertion, and casualties, was desperately understrength. Halil Pasha had been forced to redeploy forces to confront a Russian threat on the Persian frontier, leaving Baghdad dangerously exposed. When the British finally broke through at the Shumran Bend, the Ottoman retreat became a rout – pursued by British gunboats that wreaked havoc on exhausted and demoralised Turkish soldiers. The recapture of Kut was a symbolic victory. But the fall of Baghdad, which followed shortly after, was the first major British victory in the Middle East – a triumph that had eluded them since the beginning of the war.Topics covered:The disaster at Kut and its aftermathGeneral Maud's command and his superstitious beliefsThe Russian threat on the Persian frontierThe battle for Kut (December 1916 – February 1917)The breakthrough at Shumran BendThe Ottoman retreat and the naval pursuitThe symbolic recapture of KutBritish fears of Muslim insurrection in IndiaEugene Rogan's The Fall of the Ottomans is available from all good bookshops. Send us Fan MailIf you've spent thousands of dollars on SIBO testing, antibiotics, herbal antimicrobials, supplements, restrictive diets, and practitioner visits but still aren't getting lasting relief, the problem may not be that you haven't tried hard enough. After more than a decade working with difficult SIBO cases, I've seen how easily digestive care can become fragmented: one test, one protocol, one diet, one supplement, without a larger strategy connecting them. In this episode, we're looking at what can be missing when SIBO treatment provides only temporary improvement, why treatment sequencing matters, and why a positive SIBO test doesn't tell you everything you need to know about the next step. We'll explore:Why repeatedly adding treatments isn't necessarily the answer. How your SIBO type can influence the treatment approach. Why the timing and sequencing of treatment matter. What your previous treatment history can reveal about what may have been missed. Why addressing root contributors matters when you're trying to reduce recurrence. What needs to happen beyond simply clearing an overgrowth. Why rebuilding the gut and expanding your diet can be an important part of the bigger picture. What to ask before spending money on another SIBO test, supplement, or protocol. Resources mentioned:1. Jelly Roll went after Trump on Jimmy Kimmel Live and the backlash is exploding. What he said next is the real story, and it's why millions of country music fans say they're done with him for good. Then a former progressive activist comes forward with a warning that should scare everybody: the political violence in America isn't over, and she explains exactly why it's about to get worse. She reveals what happened to her inside the movement before she got out, and what she says about the Charlie Kirk rhetoric will stop you cold.Angie Nixon says she's not a socialist. So why did she join the Democratic Socialists of America, and what do the clips the DSA doesn't want you to see actually show? We play them side by side and you can decide for yourself.Meanwhile, the Los Angeles mayor race just hit rock bottom. Karen Bass and Nithya Raman tore into each other in a debate so brutal it left one question hanging over the entire city: what happens to LA if the wrong person wins?We also expose the fake polls scandal, a voter manipulation tactic so effective you've probably already fallen for it without knowing. There's a name for what they're doing, and once you hear it you'll spot it everywhere. Finally, the Spain migration crisis explodes. Thousands storm the streets of Ceuta near the Morocco Spain border, and how the locals answered has all of Europe holding its breath. Ireland went first, Spain is next, and nobody in Brussels wants to guess which country is after that.
Our playbook to $100,000 a month is free, and it's where the 90-day plan in this podcast comes from: ► The $100K Playbook: https://capitalism.com/100K Dr. Megan Jolley Milne is a pharmacist, and her company Nutranize does $20,000-$27,000 a month almost entirely off one YouTube channel. She's in a tiny space with a skeptical market and she can't run ads because of medical claims, so when she flew into our in-person mastermind I sat down with her and built a 90-day plan to double the business. I didn't give her a single new thing to do. I took things away. And you can run the same subtraction on yours. Resources mentioned in the podcast: ► The $100K Playbook: https://capitalism.com/100K ► Bootcamp waitlist: https://capitalism.com/bootcamp (0:00) A business that should be doing a million, stuck in the low six figures (1:15) Everything runs on one YouTube channel, and she's stuck on what comes next (2:14) What she sells: a supplement for the side effects of prednisone, $104.99 a month (3:03) The numbers: $20,000-$27,000 a month, and what made May different (4:01) What I caught at breakfast: the traffic goes everywhere (4:35) The inventory: Amazon, a sales page, a checklist, a taper chart, a quiz (5:16) Thousands of leads and zero buyers (6:03) The queen bee activity, and why it decides what you work on (7:08) Leakage, and why scattering a little energy waters nothing (9:27) Her magnum opus, and the phone calls it produced (11:01) Make the thing that already converts your only lead magnet (12:04) One promise up front, everything else stacked behind it (14:10) "That feels relieving. A catastrophic glacial collapse high on the Tibetan Plateau triggered a lethal deluge of mud, ice, and mountain debris through the river valleys bordering Tibet and Nepal. With over 800 confirmed deaths and thousands still missing across the transboundary region, search and rescue teams are battling deep silt, damaged infrastructure, and subterranean hazards to reach survivors. In this video, we break down the critical rescue operations—from trapped hydroelectric tunnel workers to emergency international aid—and examine how climate change is accelerating cryosphere destabilization worldwide. We also look at how shifting global weather patterns are driving extreme hydrological shocks across diverse ecosystems, including recent flash flooding and mudslides along Bright Angel Creek in the Grand Canyon. #Tibet #Nepal #GlacialCollapse #ClimateChange #FlashFloods #GrandCanyon #NaturalDisaster #Himalayas Independent media has never been more important. Key Takeaways: Scaling Logistics Innovation at Descartes Systems Group In "Scaling Logistics Innovation at Descartes Systems Group", Joe Lynch and Dan Cicerchi, the General Manager of Transportation Management Solutions at Descartes Systems Group, discuss the strategic integration of trustworthy AI to enhance existing core logistics technology and solve practical pain points across the global supply chain. Trust First: AI adoption in logistics must be built on governance and trust, using frameworks like NIST to ensure data security and accountability. AI Augments, Doesn't Replace: AI is a powerful enhancer for core systems (TMS, visibility), not a standalone replacement. Its primary role is to improve efficiency. Focus on Practical Pain Points: Start AI implementation by targeting tedious manual tasks (e.g., check calls, data entry, carrier onboarding) for rapid, measurable ROI. Stability Over Startups: Partnering with existing, integrated tech vendors (like Descartes) ensures greater stability, expertise, and roadmap alignment than relying on new AI-only startups. Audit Your Current Tech: Before investing in new AI, ensure you are fully utilizing the latest features and integrations of your current mission-critical systems. Build Trust with Staff: Overcome internal resistance by layering AI into current workflows and establishing clear performance baselines (ROI) before deployment. Enhance What Works: The path to resilience is through strategically integrating AI into proven, existing workflows step-by-step, not by chasing every new technology trend. Text the show! Oregon put a packaging fee on thousands of companies. There's just one problem: when you buy the product, you can't see what you're paying. And Oregon already knows how to do this differently.Buy a mattress and the recycling fee appears on your receipt. Buy paint and the fee is disclosed. Return a bottle and there's a dime attached to it — a dime that helped Oregon's bottle bill automatically correct itself when return rates fell. Then you get to groceries.Dozens of packaging rates. Thousands of participating producers. A nonprofit administering the system. Hundreds of millions of dollars eventually moving through the program. And no comparable number on your receipt. On this Taxation Tuesday Special, Chad Law follows the money through Extended Producer Responsibility and asks a much larger question: what happens when government stops calling a cost a tax, routes it through private institutions, and makes the final price nearly impossible for the public to see?The trail runs from Oregon to Colorado, Maine, California, overseas sellers, major corporations, nonprofits, and ultimately your grocery cart. And it ends with a simple Common Sense framework: THE DIME TEST.Where's the number?Whose receipt is it on?What happens if it doesn't work?Because the issue isn't whether recycling costs money.Of course it does. The issue is whether the people paying for government policy are allowed to know what it costs.

Correspondent Bill Whitaker reports from Germany's Baltic Coast on the bombing of the Cap Arcona, a little-known human tragedy in the closing days of World War II in Europe. Once a luxurious German ocean liner, the Cap Arcona was commandeered by the Nazis and, at war's end, turned into a floating concentration camp. Thousands of prisoners were killed in the aerial attack. Whitaker interviews historians and speaks with Holocaust survivors who witnessed the bombing to bring this largely overlooked chapter of history to light. This is a double-length segment. Marc Lieberman is the producer.Correspondent Jon Wertheim travels to Nottingham, England, to visit the Kanneh-Mason family—seven siblings, all celebrated classical musicians, whose talent is truly music to the ears. Supporting one another in harmony as they take to the world's stage, this extraordinary septet, as Wertheim discovers, is an orchestra greater than the sum of its parts. David M. Levine is the producer.
The 38 people charged in connection with an anti-ICE protest at a St. Paul church say they have been singled out for selective or vindictive prosecution. A motion to dismiss filed Monday in federal court says the defendants, including journalists who covered the protest, are being prosecuted for protected speech. The motion says protesters who disrupted a service at an LGBTQ-friendly church in Orlando, Florida, last year did not face charges. It alleges the Florida protesters were not prosecuted because their political views aligned with President Donald Trump and his administration. The Democratic candidate running against Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer says Congress has been weakened under President Donald Trump. Election policy expert Doug Chapin is running against Emmer in Minnesota's 6th Congressional District. Emmer is part of Republican House leadership and has won his six previous races easily. Chapin says Emmer has allowed executive power to grow on his watch, but says the changing district and an anti-incumbent mood could work in his favor.A months-long strike in Chisago County is officially over after the county board approved contract agreements for striking workers. About 125 county workers had been on strike since May. That was about a third of the county's staff, including health and human services workers and other government center employees. The union says the three-year deal includes pay raises and better health care plans.Thousands of dead fish have washed up on the shores of Lake Mille Lacs in recent weeks. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it is common for some fish to die every summer, but hotter-than-normal weather has increased lake temperatures. That can be hard on cold-water fish such as tullibee, also known as cisco. Cisco populations are under pressure in some Minnesota lakes that are warming due to climate change.
At the start of the pandemic, three St. Louis-area healthcare CEOs promised that they would reduce or freeze their seven-figure salaries. It came at a time when thousands of their employees were losing their jobs and benefits. As it turns out, those promises were never fulfilled. St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Jacob Barker evaluated tax filings from the three major hospital systems in the area — Mercy Health, BJC Health and SSM Health — and found their leaders were paid more in 2020 than they were in 2019. Barker takes us inside his reporting, the crises facing hospitals when they announced the pledge in May 2020, and what he's learned about how these leaders fared while their employees suffered.
Thousands of people online are accusing Patrick Clancy of murdering his own children. Surveillance footage places him outside the home. Lindsay admitted she did it. The defense's entire case depends on her having done it during a psychotic break.Criminal defense trial attorney Bob Motta was inside Plymouth Superior Court. He watched Patrick testify. He joins Tony Brueski to address the conspiracy directly, explain whether Patrick has legal recourse, and break down what happens to Lindsay regardless of the verdict.Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The Holy Spirit isn't an atmosphere, a feeling, or a powerful moment in a worship service. He's God — and He wants to lead every part of your life, not just visit it. Romans 8:14 draws a clear line between being led by the Spirit and simply being stirred by Him. Most of us welcome His comfort and His presence in worship. Far fewer welcome Him when He starts addressing pride, unforgiveness, spending habits, or the compromises no one else knows about.Pentecost wasn't just a powerful gathering — the real miracle was what came after. Peter, who denied Jesus three times, became a bold preacher. Thousands believed. People gave generously and lived visibly different lives. That's the fruit the Spirit produces, and fruit — not gifts, not moments — is the true measure of His work in a life.Because the Holy Spirit is a person, He can be resisted, grieved, or quenched. Each response carries real consequences — not just for you, but for the people around you. Full surrender isn't a one-time decision made at an altar. It's a daily invitation for Him to lead, correct, convict, and transform every part of your life.

Allen covers Clearway’s 800 MW wind farm in Maine, the state’s largest ever, along with Suzlon’s $1.2 billion project in India and Masdar’s growing battery pipeline in the UK. Then Mingyang lobbies the UK’s new Prime Minister to reverse its ban from British waters. The Uptime Wind Energy Podcast is brought to you by Weather Guard Lightning Tech, creators of the StrikeTape Ultra LPS retrofit. Subscribe to Uptime’s Substack newsletter. And check out Rosemary’s “Engineering with Rosie” Youtube channel. Have a question we can answer on the show? Email us! Up in Maine this week… they picked a spot for a wind farm. Eight hundred megawatts. The biggest the state has ever seen. Hold that thought. Halfway around the world… India broke ground on something even bigger. And in between… a Chinese company knocked on Britain’s door. Again. Start in Aroostook County, Maine. The woods up there grow timber… and wind. The Maine Public Utilities Commission chose Clearway Energy to build eight hundred megawatts of turbines on commercial timberland in the rural north. Avangrid will string the power line to connect those turbines to the New England grid. Commission Chair Phil Bartlett says the project will save Maine ratepayers at least three hundred and eighty-seven million dollars. Two-point-four billion in economic output. Thousands of construction jobs. Six hundred megawatts stay in Maine. The rest goes to Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont. Five states… one wind farm… one forest. Now fly east across the Atlantic. In Rochdale, England… Abu Dhabi’s Masdar just flipped the switch on its second battery storage plant in Britain. Thirty-five megawatts. Seventy megawatt-hours. Enough to power thirty-five thousand homes a day. And it responds to grid swings in milliseconds. This is part of Masdar’s one-billion-pound pipeline of battery projects across the UK. Three gigawatt-hours planned. One of the largest storage buildouts in the country. Wind needs a partner. Batteries are volunteering. Now south… to India. Suzlon just broke ground on thirteen hundred and twenty-five megawatts of wind in Ananthapuramu, Andhra Pradesh. The investment… about one-point-two billion dollars. Sixteen hundred new jobs. Suzlon already has a blade factory in the region. Capacity… twelve hundred and sixty megawatts a year. And the company is training twelve thousand young people, including three thousand women, in green energy skills. India’s wind sector just crossed fifty-eight gigawatts. It was twenty-one gigawatts in twenty fourteen. And staying in India… Saudi Arabia’s Alfanar Group just put one hundred million dollars into its Indian turbine subsidiary Senvion. Thirty-four million released this month. The rest in weeks. Senvion builds one-point-five gigawatts of turbines a year. Saudi money. Indian manufacturing. Global ambition. Now… one more item. And this one has an edge. Ming Yang… the Chinese turbine maker banned from British waters on national security grounds… wants back in. The company had plans for a one-point-five-billion-pound factory in Inverness, Scotland. Fifteen hundred direct jobs. Eight thousand in the supply chain. Labour ministers shut it down in March. The Ministry of Defence worried about spying. European rivals complained about Chinese state subsidies. Now Ming Yang is lobbying the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, to reverse the ban. The company says it can deliver “growth in every postcode.” That phrase… is Burnham’s own. A government spokesman says there are no plans to review the decision. So what does this week tell us? Supply chains are going local. Saudi capital into Indian turbine factories. Maine insisting on new transmission before new generation. Britain locking the door on Chinese hardware while Abu Dhabi builds its battery network. The message is clear. Countries want wind power. But they want to own the pieces. Watch for this. Permitting… not technology… is the bottleneck now. Maine’s project was authorized in twenty twenty-one. It is twenty twenty-six and they are still years from turning a blade. And storage is no longer a side conversation. Masdar’s billion-pound UK commitment says batteries are becoming infrastructure… not experiments. For professionals in this industry… the work ahead is not just building turbines. It is building trust with governments who are choosing energy security over speed. And that is the state of the wind industry for the 31st of August 2026. Join us for the Uptime Wind Energy podcast tomorrow.

Would you trust two brothers with zero aviation experience to run El Salvador's helicopter tours, plane charters, and Bitcoin travel experiences? Thousands of Bitcoiners already have. Today on Live From Bitcoin Beach, I sit down with Mauricio and Diego Villeda, founders of Bitcoin Life, the Bitcoin tourism and concierge service company that convinced El Salvador's Minister of Defense to lend them Air Force helicopters. I wanted the full story of how two guys orange-pilled by a $5K Bitcoin client built the most Bitcoin-native travel operation on the planet, and they didn't hold back.It all started with a free Notion page built to help Bitcoiners travel El Salvador, covering transportation, places to stay, and spots that accept Bitcoin over the Lightning Network. Three days after launch, Stacy Herbert retweeted it, and strangers at the Adopting Bitcoin conference were showing the brothers their own guide without knowing who made it. That one retweet turned a side project into a company, and it proved something maxis have said for years, that proof of work beats marketing budgets. These days the brothers run helicopter tours to places most tourists never see, including Lake Ilopango, a lake that had zero tourism when gangs controlled the area. They fly clients beyond El Zonte, land in soccer fields, and pay the local caretakers in sats to clear the space. For Bitcoiners flying in from abroad, they also run VIP airport pickups that take you from immigration straight to a helicopter, plane charters connecting El Salvador with Próspera in Honduras for around $3,000 per group, and real estate guidance for investors front-running the nation-state adoption wave. Every booking, vendor, and ticket runs on Bitcoin, feeding the Bitcoin circular economy that fiat skeptics love to claim doesn't exist.Their biggest project is still ahead, a Bitcoin Street in the Centro Histórico of San Salvador where every business accepts Bitcoin, complete with an academy, an art gallery, and rooftop coffee shops. The brothers are raising from investors before Bitcoin Histórico this November, and I love their case for it. A district that was too dangerous to visit a few years ago deserves a permanent Bitcoin landmark, and low time preference built this country's turnaround. If you've ever wanted to see El Salvador from a military helicopter while paying in sats, these are your guys. On this episode I sit down with legendary high school football coach Dwight Lundeen for an inspiring conversation about his remarkable 57-year career and the heart-driven leadership philosophy that built a powerhouse program in Becker, Minnesota. Coach Lundeen's story is one of humble beginnings—starting a football program from scratch, guiding it from just 17 players to over 500 boys involved. Through decades at the helm, he's not just amassed state championships and hundreds of wins, but left an imprint across three generations of student-athletes, families, and his community. In our conversation, Coach Lundeen reveals the secret behind his longevity and success: building an unshakable culture rooted in positivity, servant leadership, and above all, love. He shares practical wisdom for connecting with both players and parents, modeling gratitude and resilience, and fostering an environment where young men grow as teammates and people—win or lose. From "happy hour" practices, to intentional team-building traditions at his family cabin, to his steadfast standard of accountability, Coach Lundeen offers a blueprint for how connection yields commitment, and how love can transform lives and communities. About Dwight - For 57 years, Dwight Lundeen has done something almost unheard of in high school football: He has dedicated his entire head coaching career to one school, Becker High School in Becker, Minnesota. He is the only head coach in Becker School history and has led the program to more than 400 victories along with championships, awards, and countless memorable moments. But the numbers only tell part of the story. What makes Coach Lundeen remarkable is that after 57 years, his greatest measure of success isn't the wins, the championships or the records – it's the lives he has influenced. He has used football as a vehicle to teach young people about character, discipline, perseverance, relationships, leadership and what it means to live with purpose. Thousands of players have called him Coach Lundeen. But his greatest legacy may be found in the men they became long after they stopped playing for him. His story is a powerful reminder than success can be measured in wins, but impact is measured in lives. Thousands of languages are used around the world today, and this linguistic diversity is a precious part of our human heritage. But it's also more than that. Linguistic diversity provides clues—a vast crazy quilt of clues—about how language works, about how history has unfolded, about the dynamics of culture, and about the nature of the human mind. My guest today is Dr. Damián Blasi. Damián is an ICREA Research Professor based at the Center for Brain & Cognition at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. Over the last decade or so, Damián's emerged as one of the most innovative researchers in the study of language and linguistic diversity. He's been widely recognized for this work, and most recently was awarded the 2026 FABSS Early Career Impact Award from the Cognitive Science Society. In this conversation, Damián and talk about why scientists should care about linguistic diversity. We do a bit of linguistic diversity 101—how many languages there are, how we can enumerate them, how they vary from another. We discuss a recent paper in which Damian and his colleagues reconstructed the explosive rise and precipitous fall of human linguistic diversity over the last 12,000 years. We talk about the factors that drive language change. And we discuss how cognitive science relies too much on English and English speakers—and how this may be holding the field back. Along the way, Damián and I touch on the Tower of Babel, a golden age of linguistic diversity, the human bite configuration, scientific aesthetics, whether children shape language, polygenetic theories of language evolution, the pace of language change, schooling, linguistic inequality and behemoth languages, and why Damián thinks that possibility space of human language might be bigger and wilder than we currently imagine. This is a special episode of the Many Minds podcast. As I mentioned, Damián is this year's winner of an award from the Cognitive Science Society, in recognition of his outstanding early-year contributions to the field. He recently gave a keynote at the society's annual conference in Rio de Janeiro, and we've partnered with the Cognitive Science Society to feature this conversation about his work. I'll also mention that this wasn't my first time chatting with Damián—he's an alumnus of the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute (DISI), the sponsor & incubator of this podcast. We met there a couple years ago, and so it was all the more fun to reconnect with him here. Alright friends, without further ado, on to my conversation with Dr. Damián Blasi. Enjoy! For Palestinians in Gaza, the death toll tells only part of the story. Thousands more remain missing, buried beneath the rubble, among unidentified bodies, or potentially held in Israeli detention. For their families, the absence of an answer means being trapped in limbo: unable to confirm a death, unable to hold a funeral, and unable to stop searching. In this episode of This Is Palestine, journalist Mahmoud Mushtaha discusses his investigation into Gaza's missing people and the enormous challenges of finding them. He shares stories of families still searching for their loved ones, including 15-year-old Hassan Al-Qattah, an autistic boy who disappeared while searching for food in Gaza. This week, Jason is joined by Banfield Pet Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alea Harrison for a conversation about the real economics of pet ownership, why preventive care can be one of the smartest financial decisions pet owners make, and how planning ahead can help avoid thousands of dollars in unexpected veterinary expenses. Dr. Harrison shares her journey from leaving the country to attend veterinary school in St. Kitts to becoming a practicing veterinarian and eventually helping guide clinical strategy for roughly 3,600 veterinarians across more than 1,000 Banfield hospitals nationwide. Dr. Harrison breaks down what people should actually budget for when bringing home a pet, including veterinary care, nutrition, grooming, training, boarding, and daycare—and why many of the biggest expenses are the ones owners rarely think about beforehand. She explains why choosing the right food should be based on a pet's individual health, breed, and lifestyle rather than marketing or social media trends, and reveals why taking a proactive approach to veterinary care can dramatically change both a pet's long-term health and the owner's finances. Jason and Dr. Harrison also dive into Banfield's Optimum Wellness Plans, why they were designed to make preventive veterinary care more accessible and predictable, and how they differ from traditional pet insurance. Dr. Harrison explains how bundling preventive services can save clients more than 30% compared to paying for each service individually, while plans can include comprehensive exams, vaccinations, diagnostic testing, unlimited office visits, and 24/7 Pet Chat access. She also explains why pet insurance and wellness plans can work together, with insurance focused on unexpected illnesses, injuries, and surgeries while wellness plans focus on routine preventive care. Plus, Dr. Harrison reveals some of the numbers that show just how expensive waiting can become. Heartworm prevention can cost around $25 per month, while treating heartworm disease can range from roughly $1,200 to $6,000 depending on the pet. She also shares that Banfield data shows 80% of dogs and 75% of cats have signs of dental disease by just one year old, explains how certain breeds can be predisposed to costly health problems, and breaks down why spaying and neutering can help prevent serious conditions and certain cancers in addition to controlling the pet population. Dr. Harrison also gets candid about the challenges of becoming a veterinarian, from the competitiveness and financial burden of veterinary school to building a career that can extend far beyond treating individual patients. She explains how her own definition of impact evolved from caring for pets one-on-one to influencing thousands of veterinarians and ultimately helping improve care on a much larger scale. Dr. Harrison reveals why creating predictability, staying proactive instead of reactive, and preparing for expenses before they become emergencies can make all the difference for pet owners. She also leaves Jason with her ultimate trading secret, a mantra she applies to business, family, and veterinary medicine: “If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.” She reveals all this and so much more in another episode you can't afford to miss!
