The word “jellyfish” may bring up a memory of an unpleasant beach experience, or of nostalgic childhood days watching Spongebob Squarepants. Often jellyfish don't get the love that many other marine critters enjoy, but Spongebob certainly loved them, as fishing for jellyfish was his favorite pastime. Although jellyfish can be a nuisance and a hazard, they are an important component of marine ecosystems. Their lifecycle is fascinating, and their survival instinct is impressive. On this episode of Fish University, we'll dive deep into the world of cnidarians with someone almost as passionate as Spongebob about these brainless, boneless creatures. Ms. Diana Philips joins us from Reef Environmental Education Foundation to share with us her knowledge, passion, and a little humor about these misunderstood denizens of the deep. A Note from James:We kept recording because the conversation wasn't done. Part 1 was about writing and honesty. Part 2? It's about consequences—what happens when people believe their own hype, when we confuse being loud with being right, and when storytelling gets weaponized. Ryan Holiday has written about ego, stillness, and obstacles. But this part of the conversation gets at something deeper: what happens when power and narrative collide. And how do we live with integrity when the tools we use to create can just as easily be used to manipulate?Episode Description:In Part 2 of their conversation, James Altucher and Ryan Holiday explore the darker side of influence—how public figures lose their grounding, how movements become cults, and how audience validation can steer creators away from their original purpose. They discuss RFK Jr., Jordan Peterson, and Tucker Carlson—not as political figures, but as case studies in how public personas evolve under the pressure of attention. Along the way, they wrestle with their own roles as communicators: when to speak, when to hold back, and what it really means to be useful in a world full of noise. What You'll Learn:Why creators are vulnerable to audience captureThe line between healthy skepticism and conspiracy thinkingWhat separates honesty from manipulation in public discourseWhy power often comes at the expense of self-awarenessHow James and Ryan each wrestle with responsibility as public thinkersTimestamped Chapters:[00:00] Continuation from Part 1[01:00] How Personas Get Distorted Over Time[02:00] The RFK Jr. Conundrum[04:00] Audience Capture and Dopamine Loops[06:00] When Truth Becomes Optional[08:00] Jordan Peterson and the Burden of Symbolism[10:00] Platform Power vs. Message Integrity[11:00] What Happens When You Start Believing Your Own Brand[12:00] The "Edge" as a Career Strategy[13:00] The Slippery Slope from Insight to Grift[15:00] Building a Philosophy Business[16:00] How Stoicism Can Be Used or Abused[17:00] Tucker Carlson, Outrage, and Narrative Control[19:00] Being Useful vs. Being Loud[21:00] When You're More Known Than You Are Understood[23:00] The Fear of Changing Your Mind[24:00] When Silence is the Most Ethical Choice[25:00] Creating in Public Without Losing Yourself[27:00] The Most Powerful Words: “I Don't Know”Additional Resources:Ryan Holiday's website: ryanholiday.netEgo Is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday: AmazonJames Altucher on Twitter: @jaltucherThe Daily Stoic podcast: Daily StoicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The question the book asks is obviously transforming the system is not an individual task, it's a collective activity. But it still begs the question, if we're trying to contribute to that, what do we need to do? Not every four years when we vote, not every year when we go to a strategy workshop, but what do we do every day? And so the title is very straightforward: Everyday Habits for Transforming Systems. And that's the question the book is offering an answer to.My second conversation with writer, facilitator and consultant Adam Kahane (the first was episode e219) and with the audience at the Ottawa launch of Everyday Habits for Transforming Systems, the Catalytic Power of Radical Engagement at Perfect Books on July 2, 2025. This final regular episode of season 6 is part of my roundtable series, open-ended conversations about what a group of citizens are passionate about. And passionate they were! I started by asking Adam why he wrote the book and why does he think it's relevant today, in particular here in the nation's capital at a time when there are great tensions with our neighbours to the south and when Canadians are talking to each other more than ever about our shared values, and the challenges that we face such as the ecological crisis and climate emergency, which sadly seems to have temporarily fallen off our collective radar. Show notes generated by Whisper Transcribe AIAction pointsEmbrace radical engagement: Lean into understanding diverse perspectives and actively seek common ground.Recognize the power of everyday habits: Focus on daily actions to create lasting systemic change.Navigate complexity: Balance working towards a larger goal with acknowledging individual interests and power dynamics.Collaborate across differences: Seek opportunities to work with those who hold different views to achieve meaningful progress.Act responsibly: Consider the broader impact of your actions on all living beings.Story PreviewWhat if the key to changing the world lies not in grand gestures, but in the small, often overlooked habits of our daily lives? Adam Kahane shares his journey from facilitating transformative dialogues in South Africa to uncovering the power of radical engagement, inviting us to rethink how we contribute to a better future. Chapter Summary00:00 The Collective Task of Transformation01:19 Introducing Adam Kahane04:01 Setting the Stage for Discussion09:40 The Motivation Behind the Book15:42 Everyday Habits for Transformation22:39 Exploring the Seven Habits29:12 The Slippery Slope of Disagreement and The Challenge of Acting Responsibly35:20 Power Dynamics in Collaboration39:40 Trust and Collaboration44:00 Balancing Urgency and Everyday Habits54:25 Art, Culture, and Collaboration56:13 Radical Engagement in Action01:00:05 Navigating Power Dynamics and The Importance of Agency01:12:51 Redefining Power and Responsibility01:17:04 Risks and Realities of Engagement01:23:13 The Complexity of Multiple SystemsFeatured QuotesTransforming the system is not an individual task. It's a collective activity.Radical engagement is the opposite of standing back with your arms crossed saying, take it or leave it.Ring the bells you still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. (quoting Leonard Cohen)Behind the StoryAdam Kahane's latest book, ‘Everyday Habits for Transforming Systems,' stems from a moment of confusion during an interview with South African leader Trevor Manuel. This experience led Kahane to explore what it means to contribute to systemic change, focusing on the everyday actions that shape our world. This episode explores themes of power, collaboration, and social responsibility and how the arts weave their way through all of this. Credit: cover photo by Conyer Clayton *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). One of the big questions that's been coming up everywhere lately: how does the First Amendment actually work when it comes to online pornography? In this episode, I break down the recent Supreme Court case, Free Speech Coalition Inc. v. Paxton, which addresses whether states can require age verification pop-ups on adult websites and whether that crosses the line into unconstitutional territory.I'll walk you through the basics of how the courts view content-based regulation versus time, place, and manner restrictions, and why that distinction matters for everything from protests on the statehouse lawn to what you see on your favorite websites. We'll talk about why challenges to these regulations are so important, what makes something pass constitutional muster, and where things might be headed next in the ever-evolving world of free speech and online content. If you love digging into constitutional law, or if you simply want to understand how these headlines affect your rights, this episode is for you. Got a question? Head over to lawyertalkpodcast.com, send it my way, and let's keep the conversation going. 3 Key Takeaways:Content-Based vs. Time, Place, and Manner:Content-based regulations, where the government restricts speech based on its message, are almost always unconstitutional. By contrast, time, place, and manner restrictions (imposing rules about when, where, or how speech happens) are generally permissible if applied fairly and equally.Strict Scrutiny Applies:Content-based restrictions are subjected to the strictest legal scrutiny and rarely survive court challenges. Time, place, and manner restrictions, if neutral and reasonable, tend to fare better legally.Slippery Slope & Future Concerns:The age verification requirement for adult content raises important “what's next?” questions. Could similar regulations creep into academic, legal, or other sensitive content areas? How might new rules affect non-pornographic but still controversial discussions or resources online?Got a question you want answered on the podcast? Call 614-859-2119 and leave us a voicemail. (2:00) People want to indulge on their summer vacations, mostly at theme parks and on cruise ships. Vinnie had a lavish experience on a cruise once, but there was barely a gym! (11:00) He made do with what he had to work with. He also gets seriously seasick. The only thing to do on the cruise was gamble or overeat, neither of which he was interested in. Lately, many of Vinnie's consults have been centered around what a person, or family, eats on a cruise or at theme parks. (17:00) Make up your mind before you leave on how you are going to handle the event. (18:30) It's the key to avoiding a slippery slope! Anna gives a rundown of how you can approach the mindset. (20:00) Ask yourself beforehand about the emotional reasons, mindsets, and triggers you may have. Enjoy yourself, but be reasonable and plan. Anna reads a question from listener Bob Z. (35:00) Bob has a question about running with a weighted vest. It is not recommended to run with weighted vests. The long-term effect on hips and knees is not good. Rucking while walking is just fine, and it's best to have the waist strap that goes with it. Vinnie's new challenge for himself has been building a model train setup. (48:00) Anna's cheese bites are coming out, and Anna and Vinnie share ideas for some NSNG snacks. (55:00) More News If you are interested in the NSNG® VIP group, register here! Summer can feel like one long permission slip to indulge—looser routines, longer days, more social events, and vacation vibes that whisper “just this once.” In this episode, Molly unpacks why summer can be a particularly slippery slope for anyone working to change their drinking habits—and what you can do to stay mindful without sacrificing fun.Drawing from her own experience and behavioral science, Molly explores how deeply context-based cues shape our drinking habits and why “vacation mode” doesn't have to mean mindless drinking. You'll learn how to navigate barbecues, weddings, family reunions, and lazy summer nights with clarity and confidence. In this episode, you'll discover:Why summer rhythms can reignite old habit loopsThe difference between vacation mode and conscious modeHow context—not just craving—drives drinking desireWhy a “Doable Drink Plan” works (and how to create one that actually fits your life)The hidden cost of unplanned drinking days—even when you're doing alcohol-free days elsewhereMolly's message is clear: Summer isn't a break from your values. It's your opportunity to practice them in real life. You don't need to stop drinking entirely—you just need to stop drinking mindlessly.Mentioned in this episode:Join More Dry July inside the Alcohol Minimalist Facebook groupWeekly group coaching with Molly (free all July)Get started with the Sunnyside App (15-day free trial)Learn about Molly's coaching programs at www.mollywatts.comThis week's challenge: Create your Doable Drink Plan—one that meets you exactly where you are and feels 80–90% doable. Remember, progress doesn't come from perfection. It comes from intentional practice.Quote to remember: "Summer is not a pause on your progress. It's the season where you get to practice alignment."Until next time, stay curious, choose peace, and make a plan that supports the future you're creating.Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. ★ Support this podcast ★

What does God do with us sinners gathering at the foot of the cross? What does God do with us Davids who take and break and sin and suffer? My sin, oh the bliss, of this glorious thought, my sin not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more; praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! The cross is a sign of truth. It is a sign of our sin, our shortcomings, our situation. And the cross sets us free. But not before shaking us to the core, not before confronting us with the truth.

The duo delves into the increasing politicization of public symbols, the unintended consequences of representation politics, and the shifting cultural landscape over the past few decades. Dr. Drew offers his insight on mass formation and how societal shifts are often driven by reactionary forces. From no-cruising signs in Silver Lake to the ideological divide between past and present political movements, Adam and Drew break it all down.
