In this conversation, Daniel Rogers interviews William Paul Young, the author of The Shack. They discuss the imagery of God as Father and why some people struggle with this concept. Young explains that many people have difficulty with the Father imagery because of negative experiences with their own fathers. He emphasizes that God as Father is a metaphor and not a literal representation, and that the best traits of a father can be found in the character and nature of God. Young also discusses the importance of healing our theology and reexamining our understanding of the Old Testament scriptures. He suggests looking for Jesus in the story and reading the scriptures literarily instead of literally. Daniel Rogers and Paul Young discuss various theological topics, including the nature of God, the interpretation of Old Testament violence, and the concept of eternal conscious torment. They explore the idea that God is love and that everything about God should be understood through the lens of love. They also discuss the Trinity as the mutual interpenetration of the three persons without the loss of personhood. Paul Young shares insights from his book 'The Shack' and his upcoming sequel. Overall, the conversation challenges traditional theological beliefs and encourages a deeper understanding of God's love and grace. At age 50, William Paul Young wrote the New York Times best-selling novel “The Shack” as a gift to his kids—only printing copies for his family and friends. Today, it has sold 25 million copies and been turned into a major motion picture. 11 years prior to writing “The Shack,” Paul's wife discovered he was having an extra-marital affair. With nothing left to hide, he began a journey toward healing and wholeness: dealing with childhood abuse, religious trauma, a host of broken relationships, and a life of constant, exhausting image-management. Subsequently, he wrote “The Shack” in an attempt to express the nature of what he calls “Divine Love”. In this episode, Paul shares how love, grace, and healing only happen in the present moment, wisdom he gleaned from seeing his own life saved from the brink of falling apart. On this episode of Melody and Friends, Melody sits down with Best Selling author Paul Young to talk about his story of growing up in West Papua, New Guinea, his divorce and reconciliation with his wife, and how he was able to experience rebirth after decades of abuse and trauma.  Paul shares his story of abuse that he suffered while living in West Papua, New Guinea, experiencing sexual abuse at the age of 5. Between this and having an abusive father, Paul discusses how God is able to show us love and grace in these moments where all hope seems lost. He also explains that God NEVER violates human agency to accomplish His purpose and shows what that looks like from his perspective as an abuse victim. Paul then explains his journey of “starting over”, meeting his wife and then having an affair, and finally how he began breaking down the walls he had built up over decades of his life, and how he backed away from the abyss of taking his own life. In the end he says that it wasn't justified, but it was worth it. Who is Paul Young? William Paul Young was born in Canada and raised among a Stone Age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of former New Guinea. He suffered great loss as a child and young adult and now enjoys the “wastefulness of grace” with his family in the Pacific Northwest. He is the author of Lies We Believe About God and the New York Times bestsellers The Shack, Cross Roads, and Eve. Things We Talk About In This Episode: What is the power of a word like ambivalence and why is that so important for us to understand? How do you begin breaking down walls built up from abuse? How is lying often used more as a survival tool than one meant to deceive?  Where can we turn when it feels like the world is collapsing on us and we feel separated from God? Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Melody and Friends!

Talking about environmentalism extends far beyond the color of our skin. That was one of my big takeaways from this episode with Kim and Aliya in Part 2 of our conversation on environmental racism. While what's taking place on our planet does disproportionately affect communities of color, its has impacts on us all - especially on the generations that will come after us - and that's why it deserves all of our attention. Last week in Part 1, I introduced you to Kim and Aliya - two mamas on a mission to educate and uplift the Black community on bringing safer and more sustainable home and self care options into their homes. I love everything about what they're doing and am personally a huge fan of the products they sell! We're talking more about those today and how they pick out the brands and products they showcase on their marketplace. But we're also talking more about the WHY behind it all. Whether you're white or a person of color, whether you're a parent to littles or to fur babies, you need to hear what these two have to say.  Learning about environmental racism matters. There are marginalized communities receiving a lower quality of life by no fault of their own other than the color of the skin they were born with and the neighborhood they grew up in. That's unjust. But, I love it when conversations around niche topics like these evolve into greater ones on being a more conscious consumer, and, overall, a better human. Kim and Aliya and giving us plenty of methods and asking plenty of probing questions to get you to think about both of those things today.
