BREAK: Ingles Markets 10 STORY 1: Golfers tee off for a cause at 27th Alexis Grubbs Memorial Tournament This week, the 27th annual Alexis Grubbs Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament teed off at Brookstone Country Club, bringing together over 100 golfers, sponsors, and volunteers for a day of camaraderie and purpose. Players grabbed gift bags (thanks to A 2nd Chance Bail Bonds), fueled up on Chick-fil-A biscuits, and hit the course after opening remarks from Carlos Rodriguez, the tournament chair. By 10:30 a.m., the Shotgun Start was underway. The event honors Alexis Grubbs, a Marietta High senior tragically lost in 1998, and has since awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to students pursuing legal careers. Winners? Matthew Enslein, Aaron Tomlinson, David Lyles, and Scott Lawrence. STORY 2: Cobb OKs additional funding for South Cobb Library Expansion This week, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners greenlit $500,000 in extra funding to expand the South Cobb Regional Library by 5,000 square feet. Commissioner Monique Sheffield, who’s been pushing for this since 2021, said the project will be a game-changer for the community. The library, which opened in 2006, is one of the busiest in the county—especially for computer use. The expansion will add a new community space, a bigger teen area, and a computer lab, addressing a critical need for internet access in the area. Other board approvals? Speed signs, road projects, and grants for workforce programs. STORY 3: Cobb opts to settle with Purdue Pharma, Sacklers and other opioid manufacturers The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has signed off on three new opioid settlements, but not without some debate. The vote was 3-1, with Commissioner Keli Gambrill opposing and Erick Allen absent. The settlements include payouts from Purdue Pharma, the Sackler family, and eight other manufacturers, all tied to their role in fueling the opioid epidemic. Cobb could see nearly $1 million from Sandoz alone, with funds earmarked for addiction treatment, prevention, and education. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: COBB MAKE A WISH STORY 4: 'Our city is strong': Mableton holds inaugural State of the City address With dancers, a marching band, and a crowd of hundreds, Mayor Michael Owens delivered Mableton’s first-ever State of the City address, blending optimism with a dose of realism. “The state of our city is strong,” Owens declared, but he didn’t shy away from the challenges. Roads, bridges, infrastructure—there’s work to do. Still, he painted a vision of a diverse, united, and thriving Mableton, calling it “not just another Atlanta suburb” but a cultural destination. Owens highlighted the city’s $13 million budget—no property taxes yet—and plans for affordable housing, smart growth, and a pedestrian-friendly future. Carlos Rodriguez - @carlosrodriguez by Broken Drift
Sounds right-hander Carlos Rodriguez joins Jeff Hem on the pregame show to discuss his four-inning save the previous night, how he's felt about his two major league outings this year, including his first big league victory back in May, and how he tries to stay ready for the Brewers even when it means he may not pitch on a regular schedule.
In this bumper episode of The Cycling Podcast, Lionel Birnie, Graham Willgoss and Brian Nygaard ask where Ineos Grenadiers go from here? Thymen Arensman saved a disappointing Tour de France with two memorable stage wins in the mountains, but Carlos Rodriguez crashed out when his bid for a high finish looked like it had stalled on the cusp of the top ten. With Dave Brailsford returning to the Tour after a stint at Manchester United Football Club it became apparent just how far the team has drifted since the days when they dominated the race, winning seven editions in eight years between 2012 and 2019. Geraint Thomas is approaching retirement as a rider but could he be the man to galvanise the team off the bike? Or is it simply a case that Ineos have been overtaken by a handful of teams who have been quicker at identifying and recruiting new talent and more ruthless in calling time on riders who've gone over the summit in their careers? Before that, Lionel, Graham and Brian recap the week's racing as the cycling season splinters across Europe in this period between the Tour de France and Vuelta a España. And in the final part we hear from journalist Sophie Smith about her trip to the north of Norway to cover the Arctic Race. ✦ If you're looking for your next much-needed laugh, Atlanta comedian Joel Byars has plenty of them ready for you at his "Funny Fridays" comedy showcase. The next event in the series is scheduled for August 22 at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center and will feature performances by Lace Larrabee, Carlos Rodriguez, and Emily Holden. Byars recently joined WABE arts reporter Summer Evans to talk more about why he's committed to making our Fridays funny. ✦ Last May, when the pizzeria-arcade chain Chuck E. Cheese announced plans to retire its famous animatronic bands, the backlash was swift. After hearing this outcry, the company promised to keep a few of the bands across the nation. You may be surprised to hear that there was an outcry over Animatronics, but the art form, which brings mechanical and electronic figures to life, continues to hold the public's attention. In fact, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts offers a graduate concentration in Animatronics. It's true. If you're a fan of life-like, magical, moving figures with Dead Eyes (Jon's words, not mine), you don't have to travel far to get your fix. City Lights Collective member Wesley Boutilier brings us the story of a Six Flags Over Georgia ride that recently underwent a significant animatronic upgrade. ✦ Local artist Carl Janes knows that making art isn't a solo effort—it's as much about community as it is about creativity. Over the years, he has helped carve out spaces for Atlanta's local music and arts communities to gather, perform, and thrive—including his former East Atlanta home, The Secret Spot, and more recently, his location in Underground, called Inner Space. For his latest endeavor, he has teamed up with local brewery Halfway Crooks to curate a diverse Summer Sunday Concert series, which will run throughout August. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane recently sat down with Janes learn why he's bringing his Inner Space outdoors. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at Arts ATL looking for cultural events to share with readers, and he joins us weekly to share highlights. Today, his mix includes Black Writers Weekend 2025, and True Colors Theatre Company's adaptation of Jordan E. Cooper's Ain’t No Mo’. ✦ Artist and music enthusiast, Kosmo Vinyl. He spent several decades immersed in music and began his professional career at London's pioneering indie label, "Stiff Records." In 1979, Kosmo started working exclusively with "The Clash" and stayed by their side until the punk icons disbanded in 1986. Over the years, Kosmo's record collection became legendary. In 2014, he began posting about his favorite releases on social media as part of his series, "Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week," and he joins us weekly to share the stories behind the records he treasures. Today, Kosmo discusses the story behind Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” ✦ The game of Pinball has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last decade, and for those who love the game, August 1 is considered National Pinball Day. City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes brings us the story behind the celebration.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A near-total ban on consumable hemp-based THC products advanced in a key Texas Senate panel Tuesday, in apparent defiance of Gov. Greg Abbott who last month told lawmakers he wanted them to regulate the $8 billion industry, not outlaw it. Senate Bill 5, by Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, would criminalize gummies, vapes, drinks, snacks and smokable flowers containing any amount of the psychoactive compound THC, including marijuana and hemp. In other news, when Texas public school students return for classes this fall, their clubs and classrooms will be subject to a new DEI ban. Senate Bill 12 — signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott — prohibits diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in K-12 schools; the Professional Bull Riders association is objecting to the bankruptcy proceedings of Phil McGraw's Merit Street Media, as part of an effort to recover disputed claims it estimates at $181 million; and for more than two months, chef Carlos Rodriguez, the owner of Fuego Burger in Fort Worth, has been using a cane due to a fracture he suffered after being attacked at his restaurant. He said he had two fractures and a torn ligament in his knee. He started a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $50,000 to cover his surgery and other injury-related expenses. As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised $6,700. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Memorial Day is typically the time when you can throw out the "it's early" caveats, and thus far ... the Brewers don't look the part of a playoff team, even after a 4-3 week. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe examine whether or not the team's struggling bats turned a corner this week in Pittsburgh, but much of the discussion focuses on Pat Murphy's deployment of his bullpen arms and how that's holding back the team's ability to win games. Brandon Woodruff is still working through his rehab, Jacob Misiorowski is still in Nashville and was this a Caleb Durbin breakthrough? In Three Up, Three Down (43:40), they talk Brice Turang's defense, Rhys Hoskins' dance moves and huge performances from Logan Henderson and Carlos Rodriguez. Remember When (1:03:00) goes waaay back for a Milwaukee connection to Pete Rose's reinstatement. Curt Blanche (1:12:00) is ready for a tweak to roster rules. Then, JR sits down with Brewers utility man Isaac Collins (1:17:30) to discuss his Minnesota roots and his former high-school teammate, eventual Wisconsin Badgers basketball standout Brad Davison. Plus, how sweet was his first big-league hit against the team that drafted him? Music intro from bensound.com. Musical cues (in order): "I Got What You Want" (Extended Version) by Gloria Tells, "Arriving at Dusk" by American Legion and "Screaming Fool" by Andreas Dahlback, all from www.epidemicsound.com.
