Every once in a while, not often, but consistently, I come to a particular episode that I'm doing for myself. Today is one of those. I have told my children, and then everyone else who might listen to this old guy, that the best place to be is at the foot of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in communion with Him—Payer in a simpler term. No matter my circumstance, sad or joyful in my present, the best place for me is at the foot of our Creator, God, Redeemer, King, Rock, and Refuge. Because of His love and compassion, He is our peace, even in fear. Recently, I came across this quote "My sins prevail over me, and the terrors of their guiltiness. I am put often to ask, if Christ and I did ever shake hands together in earnest. I mean not that my feast-days are quite gone, but I am made of extremes." Samuel Rutherford We are children of God, and yet we are children of extremes. We have exquisite love for God in our inner man, and our souls exalt in His truths as we let them wash over us. At the same time we are brought to shame and wonder at the depths of our sins, and also know the cries of Paul: "Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?" Romans 7:24 A song we referenced before is "Hallelujah," by Leonard Cohen. Whatever way, he came to this genius song verse: "I did my best, it wasn't much. I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch. I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya. And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the Lord of song with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah." "There's a blaze of light in every word, it doesn't matter which you heard, the holy or the broken Hallelujah." We all come like Samual Rutherford and my hero/mentor David with great cheer and sorrow, but God accepts our holy and broken Hallelujahs. "I have become dumb, I do not open my mouth, Because it is Thou who hast done it. 10 "Remove Thy plague from me; Because of the opposition of Thy hand, I am perishing. 11 "With reproofs Thou dost chasten a man for iniquity; Thou dost consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is a mere breath. 12 "Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with Thee, A sojourner like all my fathers. 13 "Turn Thy gaze away from me, that I may smile again, Before I depart and am no more." Psalm 39:9-13 "My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises! 8 Awake, my glory; Awake, harp and lyre, I will awaken the dawn! 9 I will give thanks to Thee, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to Thee among the nations. 10 For Thy lovingkindness is great to the heavens, And Thy truth to the clouds. 11 Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Thy glory be above all the earth." Psalm 57:7-11 Our So what? That is my witness; that is what I have to give to thee. I know the depths of sorrow that says, turn away thy gaze from me. and I know his loving kindness is great to the heavens. One of the great ends while we are on this earth of our prayer lives is that we learn. That he accepts our holy and our broken, hallelujahs. Brethren, let's pray for one another. Today, again, we will spend time in worship. Simply focusing on God and His character. So, invite His Holy Spirit to pour over You with His presence. Listen intently as we experience His Word together. From Psalm 33 The Message Good people, cheer God! Right-living people sound best when praising. Use guitars to reinforce your Hallelujahs! Play his praise on a grand piano! Invent your own new song to him; give him a trumpet fanfare. For God's Word is solid to the core; everything he makes is sound inside and out. He loves it when everything fits, when his world is in plumb-line true. Earth is drenched in God's affectionate satisfaction. … bow before God; … down on your knees! Here's why: he spoke and there it was, in place the moment he said so. God takes the wind out of Babel pretense, he shoots down the world's power-schemes. God's plan for the world stands up, all his designs are made to last. Blessed is the country with God for God; blessed are the people he's put in his will. He has shaped each person in turn; now he watches everything we do. No king succeeds with a big army alone, no warrior wins by brute strength. Horsepower is not the answer; no one gets by on muscle alone. Watch this: God's eye is on those who respect him, the ones who are looking for his love. He's ready to come to their rescue in bad times; in lean times he keeps body and soul together. We're depending on God; he's everything we need. What's more, our hearts brim with joy since we've taken for our own his holy name. Love us, God, with all you've got—that's what we're depending on. Can you add your personal thoughts of worship to these words from david? What about God are you in awe of? How has God rescued you? Will you praise and worship him for the personal way He has shown up recently? Let's personalize the last lines of Psalm 33: I'm depending on You, God; You are everything I need. What's more, my heart brims with joy since I've taken for my own Your holy name. Love me, God, with all you've got—that's what I'm depending on. Pray with me: “Heavenly Father, Thank You that I don't have to worship, but I get to worship. You are a Gentleman who never forces His way, yet loves in such a powerful way that invites a response of gratitude. Thank You for loving me with all You've got. As above, so below.”

I first want to thank you for your prayers for us over this past weekend. I drove most of the night from New Life Baptist in White Marsh Maryland back to my home here in Sneads Ferry North Carolina. I arrived around 3:30am this morning and was of course quite tired, but I'm convinced that it was your prayers that kept us safe driving through the crazy traffic going around Baltimore and Washington DC on Interstate 95. Miraculously, I did not get sleepy or have a problem staying away the entire drive. Thank you, Thank you, Thank You!!!!! Psalm 149 brings us almost to the end of the Psalms, and still among the Hallelujahs. This is "a new song", evidently intended for the new creation, and the men who are of new heart. It is such a song as may be sung at the coming of the Lord, when the new dispensation shall bring overthrow to the wicked and honor to all the saints. The tone is exceedingly jubilant and exultant. It is obvious as you read this psalm that it looks forward to end of the Seven Year Tribulation period when the Lord Jesus Christ comes back with His saints on a white horse to execute judgment on the earth just before He sets up His one-thousand-year reign from the Throne of David (Revelation 19-20). Everything that God's people do in serving and glorifying the Lord must flow out of worship, for without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). The most important activity of the local church is the worship of God, for this is the activity we will continue in heaven for all eternity. This psalm is a primer on worship and gives us the basic instructions we need. In verses 1-2 we learn we must worship the Lord intelligently. Worship is something that we must learn to do, and we will be learning all of our lives. In times of corporate worship, the saints do minister to one another (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16), but the primary focus must be on the Lord, glorifying and extolling Him. Yes, we may worship the Lord in solitude, and we should (v. 5), but we must not forsake the assembly of the saints (Heb. 10:25). As members of the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-13, 27), we belong to each other, affect each other, and need each other. We need both the old songs and the new songs (see on 33:3), which suggests an intelligent balance in worship. The church family has young and old, new believers, and seasoned saints (1 Tim. 5:1-2; Titus 2:1-8; 1 John 2:12-14), and nobody should be ignored. The old songs bear witness to our steadfastness in keeping the faith, but the new songs give evidence that we are maturing in the faith as we grow in the knowledge of His Word and His grace (2 Peter 3:18). A maturing faith demands mature expressions of worship, just as a maturing marriage demands new expressions of devotion, but we do not abandon the old and major only on the new. "Let us press on to maturity" (Heb. 6:1). The old and the new must be integrated or we will not be balanced believers (Matt. 13:51-52). We must walk in the Spirit (Eph. 5:18-21) and grow in knowledge of the Word (Col. 3:16), learning new truths about the old truths and having new experiences of blessing from both. The church today can join with Israel in saying, "God is our Maker and our King" (Psalms 95:6; 100:3; 10:16; 24:7-10; Eph. 2:10; Rev. 15:3; 19:16). How He has made us is His gift to us, and what we do with it is our gift to Him. We must remind ourselves that we came from the dust, but because of God's grace, we are destined for glory! As the old song goes, "Soon and very soon, We're going to see the King." God bless!
This worship song reminds us that all our praise ultimately belongs to King Jesus. As we dive into the lyrics of this modern praise tune, we take a closer look at the creation declaring God's glory, the implications of God existing outside of time, and the eternity of praise Christians have to look forward to. "1,000 Hallelujahs and 1,000 more" equals 2,000, but how many points out of five will Colin and Tyler give this song? Tune in to find out. [Verse 1] Who else would rocks cry out to worship? Whose glory taught the stars to shine? Perhaps creation longs to have the words to sing But this joy is mine [Chorus] With a thousand hallelujahs We magnify Your name You alone deserve the glory The honor and the praise Lord Jesus This song is forever Yours A thousand hallelujahs And a thousand more [Verse 2] Who else would die for our redemption? Whose resurrection means I'll rise? There isn't time enough to sing of all You've done But I have eternity to try [Bridge] Praise to the Lord To the lamb To the King of Heaven Praise for He rose Now He reigns We will sing forever Praise to the Lord To the lamb To the King of Heaven Praise for He rose Now He reigns We will sing forever --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/worship-review/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/worship-review/support

In this episode, I sit with Beth Allen Slevcove, Author of Broken Hallelujahs: Learning to Grieve the Big and Small Losses of Life. Beth says, “We have this pressure to not give our grief the amount of time, attention, and space and help...that leads to moving through/metabolizing [grief]. That [the grief] will turn into something useful and helpful. More compassionate, more understanding. Give us a deeper ability to love and see the beauty in life. This is what can naturally happen if we give it space and help that it needs.” Episode resources (affiliate): Can You Just Sit With Me: Healthy Grieving for the Losses of Life by Natasha Smith Broken Hallelujahs: Learning to Grieve the Big and Small Losses of Life by Beth Allen Slevcove Find more resources for navigating loss and grief at Natasha's website: imnatashasmith.com
