I’m From Driftwood envisions a world where every lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer person feels understood and accepted, and every straight person is an ally. Nathan and I talk about how these stories allows us to be more connected that you think. Nathan Manske is the Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit organization I’m From Driftwood, an online archive of first-person LGBTQ stories, currently celebrating its 11-year anniversary. In 2011, Manske completed a 4-month, 50-state story collection tour, ensuring that IFD’s stories represent people from all across the country. The stories on IFD are used by family counselors as well as educators to aid them in their work. IFD’s newest program, “What Was It Like?”, documents stories from LGBTQ elders. Manske grew up in Driftwood, Texas, where one of his weekly chores was burning trash in a burn barrel. He now lives in Austin where he sorts and recycles. Storytelling can serve two purposes—to build empathy and let us know we are not alone—and it was exactly for these reasons why Nathan Manske founded his non-profit organization, I'm From Driftwood. Now, ten years later, Nathan guests on the Typed Out podcast to reflect on how far the video series has come, the lives and brains (!) it has changed, and what the next decade has in store.
We are all about stories, and our guest tonight, is one of the greatest presenters of LGBTQ stories. We are talking to Nathan Manske—director of the I'm From Driftwood. Through stories of various individuals, the program's mission : “To the LGBT teens struggling to come out and deal with their sexuality, who to this day still attempt suicide 4 times more than straight kids, it says “you are not alone.” Other people have dealt with similar situations, families, communities and churches, and have overcome and are now living happy lives. It can happen for you, too. It gets so much better, I promise. -- To the people who don't support equal rights, it says we're not all that different after all.
