2025 Mini-podcast: More on the Telepathy Tapes

Today, I am expanding on my blog post about The Telepathy Tapes. Please find the original blog post on my website: www.synergyautismcenter.com Ky Dickens actually seems in support of autistic spellers and keyboarders. The podcast, however, is about telepathy. It is not about whether or not autistics can use augmented means to communicate like using a keyboard or letter board. My concerns are squarely on the fact that autistics should not be used to prove telepathy when their communication using these augmented means is already under fire by so many. I worry (and it has been confirmed) that speech language pathologists and others who criticize the use of letter boards and/or keyboards to communicate now have additional fodder to weaken the legitimacy of autistics communicating in these ways. My concerns were recently confirmed when I joined a respected speech and language pathologist “watch party” where we all watched the actual videos of the autistics on the podcast communicating their telepathy. As the videos were played, the argument was NOT on whether they were telepathic but on whether or not they were even communicating. The majority of the participants were arguing that they were not actually communicating anything let alone telepathy. I very pointedly argued that the tapes were NOT to prove communication but to prove telepathy. Therefore, they should not be under fire for whether or not they were communicating. While they did shift their conversation and agreed with me, my point was made in that setting and not in so many more conversations. People across the world listening will now question the legitimacy of a vulnerable population communicating through means that are already questionable and in dire need of further research. Next, I spoke with a friend who is autistic and a magician. He turned my attention to James Randi, The Amazing Randi, who was a magician who turned his work to people using “magic” to trick people into believing they are telepathic, speaking to God, the deceased, etc. and getting money for it. He thought it was tragic and criminal, of course. My friend (Jonathan Chase, if you know him) helped me consider that one of the many ways to “trick” people is to use a vulnerable population in their providing “proof." Because then if you voice your doubt, you are speaking against a vulnerable population - which we just wouldn't think of doing, right!? ugh. I never intended to imply that Ky Dickens was against Autistic people using Spelling and Keyboards to communicate. In fact, she seems to be in support of it. The podcast's focus is on telepathy, not on whether Autistic people can use these tools to communicate.

You can hear the full episode by becoming a supporter at: www.patreon.com/indoctrination In this first episode of our new Patreon exclusive tribute series, we are covering the highly knowledgeable, and often hilarious James Randi. James Randi was a Canadian-American stage magician, author, and scientific skeptic who extensively challenged paranormal and pseudoscientific claims. He was the co-founder of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation. Randi began his career as a magician under the stage name The Amazing Randi and later chose to devote most of his time to investigating paranormal, occult, and supernatural claims, which he collectively called "woo-woo" He wrote about paranormal phenomena, skepticism, and the history of magic. He was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, famously exposing fraudulent faith healer Peter Popoff. Before Randi's retirement, his foundation sponsored the One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge, which offered a prize of one million US dollars to eligible applicants who could demonstrate evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event under test conditions agreed to by both parties. James was a kind and brilliant man, who sadly passed away in 2020 but his impact still looms large and we are excited to share some of our thoughts on him as well as some of his ideas in his own words in this episode. This is a special episode launching WTF Just Happened?!'s Million Dollar Consciousness Challenge of Gilead contest. This is a contest where WTF Just Happened?! will offer one million dollars to anyone who can prove, through a scientific, peer reviewed study that demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that consciousness is created in human beings at the moment of conception. Note this cannot be belief based, it must be scientifically valid.* Since, as this podcast discusses, consciousness including it's origin, start, end, source etc is one of the biggest life mysteries, I challenge anyone who has claimed to have such confidence in when consciousness begins that they are comfortable with laws being passed based on this claim, to actually back up this claim. This challenge is inspired by the Amazing Randi's one million dollar challenge, where stage magician James Randi, offered one million dollars to anyone who demonstrated they had psychic, mediumship or any other "paranormal" abilities. No one ever won, which does not mean that no one has these abilities. That is another topic, which has been discussed on this podcast in Episode 14 - The Blue Lady of The Moss Beach Distillery with Parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach and Episode 8 - The Evidence that Convinced Two Skeptics There is an Afterlife with Darren McEnaney of Seeking I. There was another high money challenge that recently was proposed by Robert Bigelow of The Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies, offering up to $500,000 for the essay that provided the best evidence of an afterlife. And there were winners. The top three prizes went to: First place $500,000 was awarded to Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove, 2nd Prize $300,000, Pim van Lommel M.D., 3rd Prize $150,000, Leo Ruickbie Ph.D. There were other awards given to those not in the top three, and their essays are worth reading. *This means that the scientific community would come to a consensus that yes, this has been proven. Apparently in the United States of America, laws are being passed that apply to women (only in certain states who are only in certain socio-economic income brackets, where they cannot afford to take a day or two off and fly to another state) imposing this what can only now be interpreted as a religious belief. I would be curious to see if there is actual valid evidence that could prove this astronomical claim. Terms and conditions: To be eligible for the one million dollars, the scientific community must be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt, as well as me that consciousness is created at conception. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wtfjusthappened/support

The conversation continues with Psychic Medium Rebecca Anne LoCicero. In this episode, that was originally streamed on IG live, Liz and Rebecca open by discussing what exactly is imagination and inspiration. Where does it come from? Does it ever come from "The Other Side." Liz and Rebecca continue their discussion on scientific testing of mediums, which the two have a different perspective on. Rebecca thinks that psychic medium readings are about love, which can be hard to measure. She also thinks that they are often subjective, what will resonate with a person. Liz thinks the love coming through in medium readings is not that important. To her it is more about data and accuracy, which provide evidence that we do survive bodily death. They also talk about "The Amazing Randi," the stage magician who posed the million dollar challenge to anyone who demonstrated evidence of psychic, mediumship, or any "paranormal" abilities. Liz explains why that challenge is not actually what it seems to be and why it really does not matter that no one has ever passed it. Rebecca shares some of her experiences with physical mediumship. That is when a medium actually becomes taken over and "possessed" by a deceased person. She has had some fascinating experiences while trying to perform physical mediumship, but has never actually been fully accomplished it. She has never seen anyone accomplish this full possession either. Liz shares that she has gone to seances to observe physical mediumship, but it was a complete fraud and carnival show. Rebecca and Liz both agree that if a medium could be completely taken over by someone who has passed away, that would be any grieving person's dream. Rebecca also gives some warnings and tips on how to avoid being conned and tricked by people who pretend to be mediums on social media. She shares that she has been impersonated a few times. But she does want to remind everyone there really are genuine and ethical mediums as well. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wtfjusthappened/support

Darren McEnaney is the host of Seeking i, a podcast that speaks with the top researchers of afterlife evidence, psi, and consciousness. Darren is a self described "lay researcher of consciousness focused on anomalous experience and life beyond physical death." Liz and Darren pick up where they left off last week. Liz continues talking about how she once bent a spoon, which Darren clarifies was with her energy, not strength. Liz also talks about how she could not do it again the next time she went to a spoon bending event, which actually ended up adding to the evidence that spoon bending is real. They both talk about major misconceptions of how mediums get their information and how that makes people think mediums are cheating when they aren't. Liz and Darren both share examples of this from medium readings they have had and they share the best medium reading they had and the worst. Darren explains that during his worst reading all he could conclude was that the medium did not demonstrate abilities at that moment, which does not prove fraud. Liz was pretty sure her worst reading was fraudulent. However these two skeptics have had readings that absolutely astounded them. They also talk about NDEs - Near Death Experiences and a remarkable phenomena that has occurred during them referred to as Peak in Darien. This is where someone who has an NDE encounters loved ones who have died, but this includes a loved one who has died suddenly and unexpectedly. The NDEr had no idea this person was dead when they encountered them during their NDE. These NDErs have also come back with information that verified their NDE was genuine, and not a dream or a hallucination. Darren explains he needs this empirical evidence to consider that there really is more than our material world. The two also discuss skeptics, and what can really be called pseudo-skeptics. These are a type of skeptic who do not try to examine the evince of psi, an afterlife, or the paranormal, but go in only to debunk. No amount of evidence can get them to even consider something inexplicable is going on. What is really surprising is some of them have seen remarkable occurrences themselves, which they later end up either denying or saying they must have misinterpreted. Liz and Darren both share examples of this. But this is not intentional on the part of this kind of skeptic as it seems to be how our brains work. We tend to be innately biased and our brains fill in what we expect to see and filter out what we don't. That is how stage magic works and both Liz and Darren share examples of this from their own lives. The late James Randi, whose stage name is The Amazing Randi, was a well-known skeptic who set out to catch mediums and other people claiming inexplicable abilities cheating. He set up a one million dollar challenge for anyone who showed abilities to come and try to win this money by demonstrating their abilities. No one ever won. Liz and Darren explain why that while Randi did do good work exposing fraud, this challenge isn't the valid test that it seemed to be. It is actually irrelevant no one has won. Liz asks Darren to share a time or personal experience he had which blew him away and demonstrated that there was most likely life after death. He shares an amazing and moving story about how after his two dogs passed away, they made sure to let him and his parents know they were still around. Darren's parents were as astounded as he was by these signs from his dogs on the other side. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wtfjusthappened/support

This is a podcast from a year ago - when we first started to do zoom sessions and put them on MartiniZone.com at the YouTube channel. Oldie but goodie while Jennifer is traipsing around the planet. I begin the segment with me on camera mentioning the two folks I invited to come to the session. Jennifer knew the face of Tom, one of them, didn't know the second one Randi at all.  However, we spoke to Tom before, and this conversation is in honor of his 70th birthday.  We talk about his birthday party on the flipside, and talk about music in general and a little bit of his bio. Then we shift to Regis Philbin, someone I knew, met through Charles Grodin (had dinner with outside of when he first met me and commented on the air about my mixed striped outfit) and he had a couple of things to say to his friend Chuck.   Then I interview "the Amazing Randi" - a terrific magician in his own right, who later became the preeminent debunker of all things paranormal.  As was our interview with atheist Harry Dean Stanton (and Carl Sagan) both in the "Backstage Pass to the Flipside" books, he had some amusing anecdotes to say, as well as messages to both Penn and Teller. Finally Paul Newman strolled by - and we got fifteen minutes with the icon who has a message for John Cusack of all people (someone I know).  We'll speak in more detail to Paul if he desires it - but it's another mind bending hour of your time.

This week, we have a conversation with Andy Blau, who performs at Renaissance Festivals as Zoltan the Adequate. He is a magician who has a lot of great stories to tell. We talk about how magic got him involved in the atheist community and how it eventually led to him spending a week as the Amazing Randi’s chauffeur. Also, he’s from Canada! Note: All of our podcasts are being recorded remotely and sometimes there are delays because the web is a scary and dangerous place. This week’s episode features a few more delays than some of the other episodes we’ve recorded this year.

The James Randi Foundation has today announced that "The Amazing Randi" had died at the age of 92, saying simply that its founder succumbed to “age-related causes” on Tuesday.  Randi joined us on this episode of the "Spirit of Magic" podcast before appearing as a featured performer at the 100th Anniversary Salute to Magic show in New York City. Randi began his career as a mentalist and magician before becoming known as a scientific sceptic challenging those who claim to have paranormal abilities. He gained fame in this field after an ongoing feud between himself and Uri Gellar in the mid to late 1970's. Randi himself rejected the title of "debunker" preferring instead to be seen as an investigator in the field of pseudo-science. He was also the author of many books on the subjects of the paranormal, skepticism and the history of conjuring. Randi talked with me about his career in these varied fields and about his motivation as a paranormal skeptic.
