I have been looking forward to this conversation for a while, and it did not disappoint.Michael Roderick is a return guest, who was on the show back in 2021 (episode 118), in my very first year. We lost touch for a while, and then something funny happened. His name kept coming up in rooms he was not in. A guest from New York turned out to be a friend of his. That friend introduced me to two people right here in Vancouver, and both of them knew Michael too. Before long, I had no choice but to reach out. Which, as Michael himself would say, is exactly how referability is supposed to work.Michael went from high school English teacher to Broadway producer in under two years, not because he had the right connections, but because he understood something most people miss. It is not about access. It is about interest. Today he runs Small Pond Enterprises, helping coaches, consultants, and subject matter experts build brands that are referable, messaging that is memorable, and ideas that are unforgettable. In this episode, we get into two things that I think are going to stay with you. The first is his AIM framework for referability, three principles that determine whether people talk about you when you are not in the room. The second is his brand-new Triple Threat framework, borrowed straight from the theater world, which helps experts understand how their natural thinking talents should shape the way they market themselves, build relationships, and get paid for their brains. And we close with something that felt timely and true, why this moment, with all its noise and uncertainty and AI overload, is actually the greatest opportunity for people who know how to have a real conversation.Key TakeawaysReferability comes down to three things: AIM. Accessibility, Influence, and Memory. If people cannot easily understand what you do, feel motivated to share it, and remember it well enough to talk about it later, you will stay invisible no matter how good you are.Stop leading with your solution. Most experts spend all their time talking about what they have solved. Michael makes the case that the real work is in articulating the problem so clearly that the person across the table says, that is exactly what I am going through. Trust follows from there.Know your thinking talent order. Whether you are a Scientist, Celebrity, or Magician, the order matters as much as the talent itself. Leaning into the wrong talent, because someone told you that is what marketing requires, is one of the most common reasons experts stay stuck.Magicians show, they do not tell. If innovation is your top talent, the best thing you can do is demonstrate your thinking in real time. Michael did exactly that in this conversation, breaking down my own triple threat live on air. That is the magic trick.Human connection has never been more valuable. In a world where people are spending more and more time talking to AI, a real conversation with a real person feels different. The connectors who lean into that right now are the ones who will stand out.I recommend you check out Michael and his work at: smallpondenterprises.comand if you are interested, sign up for his Daily email musings … you won't be disappointed.Or you can reach him directly at: michael@smallpondenterprises.comIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won't regret it.AND … Don't forget to connect with me on LinkedIn and be eligible for my complimentary LinkedIn profile audit – I do one each month for a lucky listener!Connect with me:http://JanicePorter.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/janiceporter/https://www.facebook.com/janiceporter1https://www.instagram.com/socjanice/Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! Ep 272 dives into the heated debate between magic and mentalism. The hosts discuss definitions, ethics, real-life examples (like Derren Brown and Uri Geller), audience perception, and whether the two arts should be mixed. They share practical advice for performers, listener questions about performing in public, bar-magic tips, and reflections on the difference between creating wonder and creating doubt. Crisis aid keeps the lights on this month. The THRIVE Project is built to make sure there isn't a next crisis. On this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sits down at the United Way office with longtime friend Andrea Cosans, Executive Director of Winchester CCAP, to talk about the most ambitious project of her CCAP tenure — a multi-agency, grant-funded initiative that will take up to 50 ALICE-population clients through a year of intensive support (case management, therapy, life coaching, financial literacy, job training) and follow them for a second year to see if it sticks. Andrea walks through the small-scale pilots that got her here — five clients, then ten, with results so strong they convinced funders to back a $112,000 expansion — and the partner agencies who said yes to building it together: Connected Communities, I'm Just ME, United Way Northern Shenandoah Valley, Horizon Goodwill, and Family Promise. Plus a much bigger argument about how nonprofits in this community actually do collaborate, and why "too many nonprofits, too much overlap" is the wrong story to tell about the people doing this work. Plus details on two upcoming CCAP fundraisers: An Evening of Enchantment (June 18th) and the 6th Annual Benefit Bike Ride (August 22nd). IN THIS EPISODE (00:00) Why this conversation is happening at the United Way office (it'll make sense in a minute) (00:30) CCAP's history — founded 1974 to help the population we now call ALICE (01:00) Why preventing homelessness is cheaper than fixing it (01:30) What CCAP's financial aid actually covers — rent, mortgage, utilities, heating, car repair (02:00) Why CCAP is, by design, a Band-Aid — and why a Band-Aid isn't enough (02:30) The origin story: a Legacy Wellness therapist, a life coach, a conference, and $1,000 (03:00) The first five clients — and what "wildly successful" really meant (03:30) The story of the man who came to CCAP every day, and now hasn't been seen in two years (03:30) The woman who won the Park Ranger Wheelbarrow Olympics at Great Meadows (04:30) Round two: 10 clients, 10 successes, and a $112,000 grant package (04:30) Why this can't be a one-agency program — and who said yes (05:30) Why the program follows clients for a second year (the real test) (06:30) The Valley Health Foundation and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints grants (07:00) What clients actually do — Get on Board job boot camp, financial literacy, mentoring (07:30) The forklift-certified couple, the substance-abuse and DV story, and the volunteers they became (08:30) The drug-court client who came back to teach CPR classes (09:00) Who the program is for — ALICE: asset-limited, income-constrained, employed (09:30) The Winchester paradox — beautiful downtown, 19% food insecurity, 50% on some benefit (10:30) Trauma-informed decisions and the myth that fast food is cheaper (11:30) The week-by-week structure — case manager, therapist, life coach, classes, all of it (12:30) "Room to dream" — the single father who didn't know how to go back to college (13:30) Why nobody taught most of us how to do a family budget (Janet included) (15:30) The first meeting — Andrea, the partners, and a ground rule for letting go (16:30) Logistics: release-of-information forms, intake, referrals, who does what (17:00) Kim Wilt's policy magic — and the dream of replicating THRIVE in other communities (18:00) "They're not my clients — they're citizens who need help" (19:30) The City of Winchester visit and what workforce partnerships could look like (20:30) The 6th Annual Benefit Bike Ride — August 22 at the Wellness Center (21:00) Why people fly in from Germany, England, Florida, and Ohio for it (21:30) An Evening of Enchantment — Thursday, June 18 with New Eve Maternity Home (22:00) Silent auction, live auction, Gore Cabin staycation, Vic the magician (22:30) The hot water heater story (and why it outsold the jewelry) (23:00) Why "too many nonprofits, no collaboration" is the wrong story (24:30) How CCAP's $200/household actually works in partnership with others (25:30) The food-pantry schedule across town — Mondays at CCAP, Tuesdays at Highland, Saturdays at the Merriman's Lane church (25:30) The $50,000 United Way grant that pushed 50,000 pounds of produce across the region (26:30) The Nonprofit Collaborative and the case for citizens, not clients (27:30) What happens when Church World Services loses funding — and why CCAP feels it indirectly ABOUT THE THRIVE PROJECT A new multi-agency program led by Winchester CCAP and backed by $112,000 in initial grant funding. Designed to take up to 50 ALICE-population clients through a structured year of services — case management, therapy, life coaching, financial literacy classes, Horizon Goodwill's "Get on Board" job boot camp — followed by a second year of check-ins to measure durable change. Built around the premise that crisis aid alone won't break the poverty cycle, and that no single agency can deliver everything one person needs. Eliminators (1986) Director: Peter Manoogast Cast: Andrew Prine, Denise Crosby, Patrick Reynolds, Roy DotriceRobots. Cavemen. A ninja who shows up two-thirds of the way through for absolutely no reason. A mandroid who can't stay on a boat. This is Eliminators, and it is exactly the fever dream you're hoping it is.This week, John and Sean dive headfirst into the 1986 Charles Band-produced sci-fi action romp that somehow got a PG rating despite side boob, constant explosions, and a villain who gets yeeted 100,000 years into the past by a random keyboard punch. It's stupid. It's charming. It almost works. We love it.In this episode, we discuss:"Bubblegum, Paperclips, and Tank Treads" — The plot holds together by vibes alone, and that's somehow fine. The mandroid falls off the back of a boat mid-river, John rewinds it twice, and we break down why this movie's relentless, logic-free momentum is actually its greatest asset."The Sandbox Theory of Screenwriting" — Robots, time travel, Neanderthals, a ninja who materializes from the woods two-thirds in — John's thesis is that this script was written by handing kids a box of action figures and transcribing the chaos. We make the case for why that works here when it absolutely shouldn't."The Mandroid Disguise Industrial Complex" — A fedora, a tarp-cape, and a giant red flashlight bolted to his head. Incognito. We also settle the tank tread debate: hyped in the trailer, used for five minutes, abandoned, brought back only to fall over. A true cinematic crime."PG? Are You Sure About That?" — Wet T-shirts, a bar brawl led by someone named Bayou Betty, laser violence, side boob. Apparently all fine in 1986. We dig into what the ratings board was and wasn't paying attention to, and what it says about this gloriously unhinged era of filmmaking. We Also Talked About:Mr. Inbetween (Hulu) — An FX series Sean fell hard for: 26 half-hour episodes about an Australian hitman balancing contract kills with single parenthood. Dark, funny, completely addictive. The Magician (2005) (Tubi) — The Scott Ryan mockumentary that originated the Ray Shoesmith character before Mr. Inbetween existed. Essential context.WWE Biographies: Legends (Amazon) – The Von Erichs — Three hours of documented tragedy covering the same ground as The Iron Claw but with more Kevin, more Sportatorium, and more time to sit in the sadness. Sean watched it. He reports back.Video Vixen (Bloodstream) — A shot-on-video indie slasher streaming on Bloodstream (free, but they want your email, which John resents) about a cam girl with a snuff fetish that eventually stops being a fetish and just becomes murder. The most interesting thing about it is the intentionally chaotic camera work — 1080p to vertical phone shot to Super 8 grain, switching based on which influencer is on screen. Cool concept, largely forgettable execution. John supports it on principle because indie filmmakers need somewhere to put their stuff, but he's not going to pretend it's good.King Kong (1976) (Pluto) — John revisited the Jeff Bridges-and-Jessica-Lange remake. Practical effects, a worthy successor to the original, and a soft spot for a giant ape that never fully goes away.SNL on Peacock — John went back to episode one and kept going. Don't be deceived by appearances. In a world where kindness and charm can sometimes cloak deception, it's vital to discern what is truly rooted in God's truth. In this powerful episode, we confront the reality of spiritual imposters—those who may seem good on the surface but are not aligned with the truth of the Lord.We reflect on the lasting value of the Golden Rule and the authority of the Ten Commandments, reminding us that God's standards are not outdated—they are essential. While the enemy's influence is real and powerful, we are called to a higher walk: a life of obedience, worship, and holiness. As believers, our calling is clear. We are set apart, bought with a price, and entrusted with the privilege of living wholly unto the Lord. A holy life is not optional—it is our witness. When we truly live for God, our lives shine light into darkness, making His presence visible to the world around us.The church today must reclaim its identity as a people marked by holiness. Just as the nations once stumbled when they could not see God reflected in His people, the world now is watching. Will they see Him in us?Join us as we explore what it means to live authentically, to acknowledge Him in all our ways, and to guard our hearts against anything that would pull us away from God's holiness. Don't let imposters lure you away—stand firm, stay set apart, and live a life that reveals the Holy God to a watching world. The Voice in the Wilderness does not endorse any link or other material found at buzzsprout.More at https://www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org/

In this solo episode, Jonah Babins reports back from the annual Mastermind Summit. Every year, Jonah takes the mastermind group to an epic, tropical destination to map out business growth, and this year they returned to a beautiful resort in Mexico. While the room tackled classic pillars like contracts, public shows, SEO, and cold email, one massive topic dominated the entire trip: Artificial Intelligence. Jonah issues a direct warning to performers: it is 2026, and running a business without looking at AI is simply irresponsible. This isn’t about shoving technology down anyone’s throat; it’s about recognizing a unique window of opportunity to out-innovate your competition before your booking systems feel completely ancient. What You'll Learn in This Episode The Rising Floor: Why “okay” websites and generic marketing won’t cut it anymore as new competitors launch with highly optimized, AI-driven setups. Lead Generation in Flux: How the foundational engines of magic bookings—including SEO, Google Ads, and cold email—are shifting under our feet. Automating the Stuff You Hate: Turning over tedious tasks like inbox management, contract writing, web scraping, and chasing payments to AI so you can focus on performing. The Speed of Creativity: Why business no longer moves at the speed of pure effort and hours, but rather at the speed of creative system design. The Mastermind Evolution: Why the Discourse in Magic Mastermind has officially transition into an AI-driven innovation company. Key Pillars of the Discussion Shifting From Effort to Creativity Once upon a time, the magic business favored whoever could put in the most raw hours—sending the most emails or writing the most blog posts. Today, the tools are equalized, meaning the most creative system wins. Jonah contrasts a basic user who merely transcribes a sales call with a creative producer who uses AI to instantly sync with a CRM, generate automated follow-up sequences, pull dynamic client testimonials, and build custom pitch decks instantly. Just like a deck of cards, the tool remains the same, but the output depends entirely on the creativity of the performer. Erasing the Admin Work The most easily replaced tasks are the repetitive admin jobs that most magicians procrastinate on anyway. AI excels at calendar management, draft sorting, data scraping, and contract refinement. By automating these friction points, you preserve your energy for the parts of the business that require true human relationship-building: the magic, the client interactions, and the live performances. Mentions & Links The Discourse in Magic Mastermind: The premier community helping magicians scale their businesses through modern tech and strategic innovation. Jonah’s Daily Companion: Claude—the specific AI platform Jonah and lead coach Kelvin use for 3 to 5 hours every single day to test new workflows. Don’t wait until it gets easier. Jonah’s ultimate challenge to the community is to spend at least one hour a week (ideally an hour a day) playing with these tools. The magicians who jump in now are the ones who will capture the market while everyone else waits on the sidelines.

One hundred years after the late Miles Davis was born, the revolutionary trumpet player remains one of the 20th century's most influential artists. We look back at the life and legacy of a complex, visionary figure with one of his collaborators, musician Jason Miles, who recorded the albums "Tutu", "Music for Siesta" and "Amandla" with Davis during his later years. This is Part 2 of my conversation with Heather Pollington — ex-Hollywood artist, iconographer, and illustrator for Symbolic World Press. If you haven't listened to Episode 75 yet, start there first. In this second half, Heather and I go deeper into her world as an icon painter — her illustration influences, the iconographic concept of simultaneous narrative, what it felt like to first encounter Orthodox art, and the bigger question of what a living iconographic tradition looks like for Western audiences today. We close with something I found genuinely moving: Heather's candid account of leaving Hollywood behind, and what she's learned about following work you can do with love.Illustration Influences: From the Palekh lacquer-box tradition of Russia to British illustrator Errol Le Cain and Scandinavian master Kay Nielsen — the visual DNA behind Heather's fairy tale work. The Memory Box: Why Heather's illustrations use framed vignettes instead of full-bleed spreads — and how her doll's-house fascination connects to a centuries-old iconographic principle called simultaneous narrative. The Primacy of Meaning: How iconography taught Heather to colour by emotion rather than observation — and why the best icons hold a permanent tension between the knowable and the unknowable. The Pivot Point: How researching medieval art for Maleficent 2 in 2017 became the unlikely doorway into both iconography and a return to meaning.Old World, New World: A rich exchange on the difference between encountering Christian art in historic England versus new and cosmopolitan Canada — and why North America's "blank slate" might actually be an advantage for building a new vernacular tradition.Reading the Room: Heather's approach to making iconography relevant for modern Western audiences — not by inventing, but by selecting from history what already resonates, the same way she once designed for "Michigan Joe" on a Hollywood set.Doing the Work with Love: Heather's honest account of leaving the film industry — not with a plan, but by moving toward the thing she loved. And finding that the world realigned around her when she did.Heather Pollington: Check out Heather's website and Instagram to see her illustration, iconography, and production design work.https://www.heatherpollington.com/https://www.instagram.com/heatherpollingtonSymbolic World Press: The fairy tale books Heather has illustrated for Jonathan Pageau, including The Tale of Snow White and the Widow Queen and The Tale of Rapunzel and the Evil Witch.https://www.symbolicworld.org/Errol Le Cain: British illustrator and one of Heather's key influences — look for his versions of Aladdin and The Magician's Daughter.Kay Nielsen: Scandinavian Golden Age illustrator; his book East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a must-see.Aidan Hart: Icon painter and Heather's teacher in the Orthodox iconographic tradition.https://www.aidanharticons.com/Creative Mornings Vancouver — June 5th: Tom will be speaking at Creative Mornings Vancouver around the theme of "Curate."https://creativemornings.com/talks/tom-froeseICON13 — Baltimore, July 16th Workshop: Tom's workshop at the illustration conference is now sold out, but come say hi if you're there.https://icon13.theillustrationconference.org/scheduleKnow Your Art — Cohort Class Mailing List: Interested in future offerings of Tom's six-week illustration course?
