In Part One, Brian walks us through the pivotal moments that shaped his path—from coming out as a college athlete to confronting power structures as a civil rights lawyer. He shares how being raised by military parents shaped his moral compass, how football taught him about leadership under pressure, and why he believes his queerness has made him a better, sharper advocate. This is the story of a public servant forged in fire—and not afraid to stay loud.Key Highlights of Our Interview:The Day Job and the Gay Job“There was work I did to earn a living. And work I did to sleep at night.”Brian's legal path wasn't linear—it was moral. Disability law by day, LGBTQ+ advocacy by choice. The real career came when he fused both.Feminist Lawyer at Age 12“I told people I wanted to be a feminist lawyer… before I even knew what that fully meant.”His mother's defiance of gender roles shaped more than his politics. It gave him a framework for justice—before he ever came out.Raised by a Combat Nurse with a Crew Cut“She probably got accused of being a lesbian once a week in the military. It didn't harden her—it strengthened her.”Growing up with two military parents meant discipline and love. But it was his mother's quiet power that taught him to be an upstander, not a bystander.Coming Out—and Coming Into Power“My teammates waited until they knew I'd be safe to ask me if I was gay.”Brian's coming out wasn't loud—it was supported. That emotional safety net shaped how he now builds space for others. From Closet to Capitol“Eight months before I took office, I knew I was the only out person in the room. But I also knew I wasn't the only one.”Brian didn't just fight for LGBTQ+ rights—he stood up for racial justice, reproductive rights, and equality as a full strategy. Being gay got him elected. Being an ally kept him effective._______________________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Brian Sims --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. In this raw and soul-stirring episode of The Healing Version, host Deborah creates space for the truth so many LGBTQ+ people carry in silence: the pain, courage, and complexity of coming out—especially to family. Coming out is often portrayed as a celebration, but for many, it's met with silence, shame, or outright rejection. In this episode, Deborah unpacks the emotional weight of telling the truth about who you are, what it costs when that truth isn't received with love, and how to begin healing when home no longer feels safe. With powerful reflections and real listener stories, Deborah reminds us that coming out isn't just about sexuality—it's about coming back to yourself. You'll hear affirmations for anyone who's ever had to hide, encouragement for those still finding their voice, and a message for families learning to love better. Because healing starts with truth. And on The Healing Version, we honor every version of who you are.

What does it take to walk away from the life you've known in order to live more authentically? In this episode of Awaken Your Wise Woman, host Elizabeth Cush (licensed therapist and soul support for highly sensitive women) talks with Suzette Mullen, author of The Only Way Through Is Out. After decades of marriage and raising two sons, Suzette came out in midlife—a shift sparked through the process of writing her memoir. Together, they explore what it means to find your voice, take agency over your life, and follow a path that aligns with your truth, even when it feels scary or uncertain. The conversation dives into themes of identity, courage, and the grief that can accompany deep personal change. Hey Straigtiolab Listeners, here's an episode of a new show, Silver Lining With The Old Gays, that we think you'll love. In today’s conversation, The Old Gays swing the closet door open on their coming out histories: from discovering their gay-hood and hard conversations with loved ones, to offering heartfelt advice for the next generation of LGBTQ+ folx. Whether inspired by underwear ads, Billy the Kid, or “sex with my psychologist,” their stories remind us that coming out isn’t defined by labeling your identity for others, but by the journey of personal discovery. New episodes drop every other Tuesday, listen and subscribe wherever you get podcasts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
My guest this week is the comedian Ricky Sim, who's currently touring with his show Coming Out to Dead People. As the name might suggest Ricky's coming-out process was a little bumpy. Starting with the time that he smuggled an adult VHS tape into the one place he felt safe watching it … a church basement. (Check out Ricky's upcoming shows in Chicago and New York at https://www.rickysim.com/#tour-dates .)We'll have that conversation in just a minute. First — if you're in Seattle, I hope you'll join me at my upcoming live show What's so Gay About Frasier. It's a deep-dive into the private life of Seattle's most eligible bachelor — and an investigation into why he keeps finding himself at the center of queer misunderstandings. It's on Tuesday, June 24 at Elliott Bay Books on Capitol Hill at 7pm. I have all the details in the shownotes and at mattbaume.com/events.Also, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. You may also enjoy my YouTube videos about the making of iconic movies and TV shows — I have a new video about the magic of Star Trek's Lwaxana Troi. And check out my weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my free email newsletter. There's links to all that in the episode shownotes, and at MattBaume.com.
Boldness looks different when you're a gay dad, a former Broadway dancer, and raising a toddler named Maverick in Florida. To kick off Pride Month, John Corella is joined by Bret and Stephen, Broadway performers, husbands, and proud dads, who offer an honest look at parenting, partnership, and identity. They talk about raising their son Maverick with intention, finding joy in everyday moments, and the kind of quiet courage it takes to show up as a two-dad family in spaces built for straight families. Where does boldness come from when the world keeps trying to put you in a box? What does it mean to raise a child who sees authenticity modeled at home? Through stories about sobriety, social media, and their dance competition backgrounds, Bret and Stephen reflect on what has shaped them and what they hope to pass on. This episode questions the norms that still dominate parenting culture and the dance world, and it offers a reminder that being seen can be a radical act of love. Depression silently shadows millions of lives, with over 21 million Americans experiencing major depression annually. Even more revealing is that approximately 7.6 million Christians battle this condition while often facing an additional burden of shame and spiritual confusion. These statistics aren't just numbers—they represent real people struggling to reconcile their faith with their mental health challenges.Depression stretches far beyond temporary sadness or spiritual weakness. It's a complex mood disorder that can drain motivation, steal joy from activities once loved, and even disrupt your sense of connection with God. For Christians, this often creates a painful cycle where feelings of spiritual inadequacy compound the depression itself. The good news? You don't have to suffer alone, and there are numerous practical strategies to manage depression while honoring your faith journey. Before reaching for medication (though it can be appropriate and lifesaving when needed), consider these faith-friendly approaches: morning walks that expose you to mood-enhancing sunlight, handwritten journaling that neurological research shows activates emotional processing in ways digital journaling cannot, challenging negative thinking patterns that distort God's truth, and setting small, achievable goals that rebuild confidence. Scripture repeatedly shows that even faithful servants experienced profound discouragement, yet they found hope through their darkest seasons.Faith offers unique resources during depression: hope when circumstances seem hopeless, strength during times of weakness, a perspective that challenges distorted thinking, and a community when isolation feels safest. As you journey toward healing, remember that self-compassion isn't selfishness—it aligns with Jesus' command to "love thy neighbor as thyself." Whether through the practical tools shared in this episode, the resources on my blog, or my book "Getting a Grip on Depression," know that you can find your way back to joy and purpose. Depression may be part of your story, but with faith and evidence-based strategies, it doesn't have to define your future.#Depressionbiblestudy, #christianbooksondepression, #depressionandfaith, # christiandeppresion,#christianmental health.Link to Coming out of the Shadows #3Link to Coming Out of the Shadows #2Link to Coming Out of the Shadows #1Let John know what you think!

Send us a textComing out as fat is harder than coming out as transgender, at least in our experience. When performer and cabaret artist Ross Anderson-Doherty refused to pursue weight loss as medical treatment, their healthcare became a weapon of punishment rather than care. In this raw conversation, we explore how medical fatphobia intersects with transphobia, classism, and ableism to create devastating trauma that nearly destroyed one person's will to live. Ross's journey from medical neglect to triumphant revenge reveals the urgent need to recognize healthcare discrimination as the trauma it truly is.
