From the back cover: The snake stuffed in attorney Paul Morantz s mailbox by acolytes of Synanon, a once-hailed drug rehabilitation center that had devolved into a paranoid, militaristic cult, was an early strike in what would become a 35-year war with nearly every major cult movement this country has ever known. Mr. Morantz has been involved under frequently bizarre circumstances--with such infamous sects as the Charles Manson family, Patty Hearst and the SLA, Jim Jones and the People s Temple, the Moonies and the strange world of Scientology. His efforts have helped many escape from lives of torment and contributed to a sea change in how courts deal with the little-understood issues of brainwashing and cults. Now, in this important and compelling book, Mr. Morantz offers a comprehensive account of the origins and activities of cults and how they prey on society s most vulnerable elements. It also recounts the very intimate tale of how these confrontations with threatening and often, violent forces cost him the woman he loved and nearly, life itself.

Author and attorney Paul Morantz (August 16, 1945 – October 23, 2022) discusses his book Escape: My Life Long War Against Cults. Paul Morantz was one of my first interviews. After I reached out to him, he invited me to his place in Los Angeles to both meet and so I could pick up a signed copy of his book Escape, discussed herein. He invited me into his home to get his book and sign it. I remember him as an easygoing, gracious person. He walked me out to his driveway and as I turned to leave, I instinctively reached out to shake his hand. Morantz responded and placed his snake-bitten, damaged right hand into mine. Surprised, I tried to keep a straight face as I walked to my car. Driving off, I upbraided myself for extending my right hand to him with out thinking; however, meeting Paul Morantz remains a memorable event. Rest in peace. No one joins a cult; everyone joins a good thing, but once you're in too deep, it can be impossible to tell the difference. In 1958, Charles E. Dietrich Sr set out to do a good thing: create a drug rehabilitation center that was more inclusive, unlike AA which he found to be limiting. What started out as a new-wave addiction treatment movement turned into a violent and dangerous cult that was existing in plain sight and operating very differently on the inside than was being shown to the outside world.Headed by a troubled dictator, Synanon eventually became known as "one of most dangerous and violent cults America had ever seen". Forced abortions and taking violent revenge on anyone who fought against them (especially lawyer Paul Morantz) are just some of the sinister details outlined in our discussion.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comCheck out our new website at crimefamilypodcast.caMusic (pre-theme) by LiteSaturation on Pixabay.EPISODE RESOURCES:"The Man who Fought Cults and Won" by Matt Novak.
